I'm no guitarist but have always loved this song, just one of the gems from "How will the Wolf Survive". That album is a testament to T-Bone Burnett's production skills, especially his feel for getting the best sounds from electric guitars. Thanks for posting this tutorial.
Fantastic job. I too think this is the best guitar break I have ever heard. I have played the song hundreds of times. It's not really a break because it continues through the entire song. After searching UA-cam I find that no one else covers this song. You can't cover it if you can't play the guitar part. Great song. Great video. Thanks!!!
Lol. I did the exact same thing!!! I was banging my head against the wall trying to get those licks down while playing some rhythm. Finally watched a video and as soon as I saw him playing I knew it was in open tuning 😂 Cheers for this video! You did an amazing job on it. Thanks for breaking it down.
What a magnificent demo/ lesson. You deserve an award for doing this for all us guitar players all over the world. You are an absolute star! Thank you so very much 🌌💕🌠👌
@@DDubGuitar Thanks for being the only guy to help us all world wide to finally be able to learn this beautiful piece. Best wishes from Northern Ireland. 🌠💕🌌🙋♂️
Very very nice. Finally I nail this song because of you! Thank you sir. To play it at full speed is stll a challenge but finally I'll get there. I knew that there was a trick behind it but I couldn't figure it out myself. This song is and "All I wanted to do was dance" /Shakin shaking shakes are my Los Lobos favorites. There aren't many tutorials on UA-cam for Los Lobos songs except La Bamba so if you wanna teach us more....be my guest 🙂
The first time I heard this song, was on My Name is Earl. Fell in love with it then. Tried to learn it over 20 years ago, but gave up. Instinctively I felt it was in open tuning. Your video is a jewel. Thank you for this, gonna give it another go. Thanks man!!!
Hey DDub, thanks so much for this! You have no idea how long I’ve tried to play this song. I’ve been playing for 40 years and this was still top of the list of songs I wanted to but never got right. Like you I started in standard, got close until the solo, then discovered a while ago open D is the trick. Still never put it all together. Then read David Hidalgo said he recorded it in open D but got tired of retuning for this song “just kinda worked it out” in standard tuning and I’ve mostly seen him play it that way recently. I figured I’d just try to kinda work it out myself, but I’m well aware I’m no David Hidalgo, no one is. This is fantastic, now that you’ve got it right, I just need to get fluid with it and practice. It’s a sign. I met David and had him sign one of my guitars at a show a few weeks ago, just yesterday bought my second Tele (yes it was necessary to have another), came home last night and saw your video. Time to play. Well done and keep it up, thanks so much again. You made at least one persons day!
Thanks Troy. If you read some of the comments, you'll see that you're not alone. Took me a while but it was worth it. Such a great guitar part (and great MUSIC)...DW
Man. I’m so jealous. I’ve been playing it my way for years. It’s sounded decent but I knew that I hadn’t cracked it or so to speak. Good work. Thank u. I did that expect same thing on The A chord.
Thank you for this MAGNIFICENT decoding. Sounds perfect....that open, cascading, jangling almost steel sound that I have been trying to get for over ten years. I too watched a lot of Los Lobos You Tube live versions, as you said, where Hidalgo payed in drop D. That was Ok for the verses and chorus, but just could not get that intro and lead sound. The few other You Tube postings didn’t get the sound at all. I reread the old Guitar Player magazine where David indeed said the record was in open D but that he relearned it in drop D for playing live; but even with the mini lesson he gave I couldn’t get it to sound real. I’ve been playing since since 1967 and think am pretty decent but I just couldn’t nail this one til now. You got it right.
Nailed it. Been BS-ing this song for years and finally got tired of missing that beautiful open 5-4 change. You fully enabled my lazier inclinations to leave my ear training on the shelf, DdubGuitar - thanks a ton! I'd rather spend those hours paying proper respect to playing the song. Rock on, brother.

Great job! I was listening to this just yesterday .. I'd gotten as far as thinking the low E was dropped, but having the whole thing be in Open D is a revelation for me. I've been messing around in Open D for some time but this opens a whole new realm. Thanks for your efforts, with a huge nod to David Hidalgo, such a great guitarist.
It's texmex chickenpickin' in open D bsically.... amazing. Ty for taking the time man!!! Great job! Subscribed and learning this masterpiece!! Open D is my fav!!!
David was emulating Cajun steel guitar. Spoke about in an interview. wonderful solo, thanks for breaking it down. Subscribed ( By the way I play electric guitar in a Louisiana rocking roots combo)
Hey Blake, thanks for subscribing. Can you give me a couple of examples of Cajun steel? I'd love to check some out. I've listened to plenty of Gatemouth and Clifton Chenier (I know Clifton didn't play guitar) but I don't think that's what you're referring to.
There is one live version I found here on YT (under the title "Los Lobos 'One Time, One Night' 1992 +") that has an extended middle guitar soio which I have never heard David play in other versions. Also, in this version the gorgeous vocal harmonies are present like in the original. In many live versions David sings much of his vocals without those harmonies for some reason. I have always thought this live version is the best version ever captured of the song.
If I could learn one lick before I die this is it. I've been trying ever since they first played it on Austin city limits. Maybe I can get it right now. Thank you. Great lesson dude. You're a genius

Actually, now I am wondering how this would sound on my classical guitar? I know that seems nuts, but I've found that a lot of stuff that you would assume only works on an electric can be interesting on a classical especially if you need ringing resonance. I don't have a Ramirez or anything close to one, but with Savarez strings, my guitar has the best tone and sustain of any guitar I've ever played ("ever" meaning longer than most of you guys have been alive). I'll give it a try. Thanks again.
