Shabu will be greatly missed. I always enjoyed you letting the dogs join in on the food at the end of the videos. What a brilliant video to have her last appreance in. She may no longer be by your side, but I am certain that she will forever be in your heart.
I was dreading the end of this video from the start, knowing I'd be seeing Shabu's last recorded midair bite. :( RIP good girl, I'm sure you gave her a good life Kenji! I know we all enjoyed her appearances.
Talk about a real-life video. First, the news of Shabu (I'm sorry for your family's loss), and then the two-day intermission. I love the authenticity, and I really appreciate all the "If you don't have ___, then you can use ____" comments. Much love, Kenji!
It’s incredible how chill he is when he has to leave home with his daughter in 15 mins! Like, I would never even think to start cooking, much more filming a video
My heart broke when I first learned that Shabu had passed. It absolutely shattered when I heard her whimper and watched her stagger through that baby gate. Thank you for providing such a good life for such a good girl, Kenji, and for sharing some of that journey with all of us.
My 5 year old wants to send you a photo of her dog teddy to make you and your family feel better. Trying to explain to her that sending a photo of a teddy to another country wasn’t very practical but that I would let you know that she’s thinking about you 😁
I never comment on these but im so sorry to hear of Shabu's passing, for the years ive been watching your videos, her guest appearances have been some of the best parts
I'm tearing up over Shabu... Sweet Abbey, my 20 year old cat, is the definition of a cat having many lives. But every time she bounces back, it's not quite back to where she was. I know the time is coming sooner than I wish. So glad to know you gave Shabu so much love, and I hope we get to keep seeing Jamon for many years to come ❤️
I just want to point out how happy and loving your dogs look towards you. You can tell you treat them well and are an amazing dog dad. Thank you for all the recipes Kenji!
RIP Shabu! Some of my favorite parts of these videos of yours, Kenji, were the end where Shabu and Jamon got a gift for being so good. Forever in our hearts, Shabu!
Your channel is the best food channel. Thank you for teaching us home cooks how to be much better cooks in a realistic way. Also, sincere condolences on the loss of your furry family member. As an elder pet owner that loss is immense.
I had heard of Shabu's passing a few days ago, I wasn't expecting to see her again so this was a surprising and tear-filled video to watch. She will be missed by everyone!
Thank you for letting us into your life. Whether it be talking about your grandmother’s cooking or rushing off to your kids events. Even the sad parts of your dog passing. You are a great mentor to us all.
I grew up in a home where we also let our dogs try little bites of our cooking, because we loved food, and each member of our family deserved to partake in a home cooked meal, even the furry ones. Watching you feed Shabu (and sometimes Jamón) always reminded me of all the wonderful childhood memories in the kitchen that I had with my family and pets. I would excitedly look for her and anticipate her little treat in each video. Thank you Kenji for sharing the joy of your pets with all your viewers, along with all your cooking knowledge. Your videos are my favorite to watch on UA-cam, and I wish the best for you and your family. My partner and I recently welcomed a new dog, Pepper, into our family (we loved your food related dog names so much that we pretty much only considered food related names) and I'll think of you and Shabu when she is my taste tester in the future.
I’m catching up on Kenji this New Year’s Day and am just seeing Shabu passed a few months ago.. I’m so sorry for your loss, he’s been a heartwarming addition to your journey that we have all had the privilege of enjoying..
Kenji, the niku udon looked very appealing. You are right about making dashi from scratch is about the easiest thing in the world to do in the kitchen. We are so sorry about the passing of Shabu, who has been a welcome feature of your videos lo these many years. I still have moments where I mourn the passing of my previous dogs even after 50 years
Kenji, my girlfriend purchased a signed copy of both your books for my birthday and you inadvertently drew a burger in one of them and that so happens to be one of my favorite foods. Thank you for being who you are and inspiring so many people to become better cooks.
So sorry about Shabu, that's always sad. I wanted to say thanks for cooking with your less-than-perfect onions in your video, it's great to see the real life moments - "this will be fine, got to wrap this up and get my kid to their thing" is the realness I'm here for.
As soon as I heard, then saw, Shabu in this video, I got emotional, and the immediately following message confirmed it. Losing a dog is one of the rare instances where almost everybody has experienced it, and yet nothing anybody can say will make you feel better about it. There are so few phenomena into which we willingly enter knowing the end result will unavoidably be immeasurable pain; bringing a dog into your life is one of them, and is unequivocally worth it. I offer only that I hope your family takes some measure of solace in the knowledge that whatever joy she brought into your life (and I have no doubt it was immense) was surpassed by the love she received and undoubtedly felt. I am sobbing as I write this, a message for a person I've never met, about a wonderful dog I'll never know. May you find peace in that which you gave to her. Words cannot adequately express how sorry I am for you, Kenji ❤
R.I.P. our favourite taste tester Shabu! Kenji always had a small panel of judges for each of his dishes. It's sad that one of the judges has past away due to cancer. :( It'll take some time to get used to not seeing little Shabu in the videos after this one. Hope you and your family are doing well after the loss Kenji, my condolences!
The thing I loved most about Shabu (and Jamon) is how polite he was. You could see how much he wanted any bit of food he could get but you could never hear him bark or any other way interrupt the cooking process. He would just patiently wait there to get noticed. He was a lovely little fellow.
can't even begin to tell you how much I admire that you don't show your kids on camera! it's very refreshing to see parents that respect their kids' privacy unlike certain other food youtubers
I don't watch too many cooking video producers to have observed this practice. It's certainly not a bad idea and is further evidence of Mr. Alt's consideration. I know an Adam R. who has featured his children in a couple of videos, it seems like that doesn't really happen anymore though now that they're a little older I suppose, but I haven't really watched anything of his either to be certain. I do think that it's not especially concerning during that period when children basically just blobs with no real conception of things, so if he's stopped I don't fault him too much.
Prayers and happy thoughts to you and the family. Thank you for sharing Shabu with us and letting us into your lives. I love the new cookbook, I have really really enjoyed it
I also have a rescued dog that was abandoned and has some trauma. The struggle makes me love him so much more. Love and respect to you all as you grieve! Also, this looks like great comfort food. My wife just lost her aunt and has a bit of a cold. I'll try to make some of this soon!
Oh Kenji, I'm so very sorry to hear about Shabu. The love you have for your family (including the furry ones) is so evident and you gave them a wonderful life - (not being weird) I'd gladly sit on your floor and receive scraps from your videos as Shabu did, they were a lucky pup!!! Thank you for this wonderful recipe - I've been looking to branch out from various store ramens etc and I like your broth / cooking liquid for this, sounds absolutely delicious.
I've had two dogs in my life pass away within the last few weeks so Im right there with you, Kenji. We truly don't deserve the love they give us but we can try our best to earn it. Rest in peace, Shabu.
Sorry to hear about Shabu. I hope you and your family (and especially Jamon) are all handling it okay. Dish looks fantastic. I don't think I knew about options for dashi beyond fully homemade or Hondashi. I'll have to keep an eye out for those.
So sorry to hear about Shabu, she will be missed. I loved her cameos in your videos, it reminds me of my own dog when I'm cooking. Thank you for the recipe!
And here I am with tears in my eyes again. I saw your post previously about Shabu but it's still sad. We will all miss her. Very sorry for your loss, sir.
I made thick udon noodles today and didn’t really know what to do. Thank you for taking time out of business to show us how! Love your channel the most and also bought a sick carbon steel wok on your suggestion.
I so loved Shabu and her spunky spirit! If Jamon missed a catch it never made it to the floor! Shabu caught it, lickedy split! I was very proud of her patiently waiting for her last mid-air snack, and as always her catching it with "nothing but net." My love to you, your family and Jamon.
Rest In Peace Shabu. I lost my dog yesterday and was excited to see a new video of yours, which I knew would comfort me. Thank you for always making amazing videos. We will never forget Shabu
Long time watcher, first time commenter. I feel for you and your family. We had 3 fur friends and our oldest took a turn for the worst this year. They are our best friends and Mud will be missed. Thank you for continuing your videos.
Shabu lived an awesome life full of great love and great food. That's all a dog asks for. You gave her a great life and she gave you love. Always remember that and be happy that you got to spend those years with her and know she was happy to spend them with you!
Ah, very sad about Shabu, I'll miss him in your videos. My dog has been sick the past few days (Golden Retriever, about 1 and a half years old) and while it's been quite expensive, it reminded me of how precious time can be sometimes as I look at him sleeping. Shabu definently mustve enjoyed the journey of tasting all the things you've made over the years. Much love and appreciate you sharing this.
❤❤ much love for Shabu. I lost my second dog over two years ago and still cry for her. I thought it would be easier the second time but it's even more difficult
Shabu feels like family, we've watched so many shabu bites over the years :( sending hugs. Also for people who dont eat fish, kombu and dried mushrooms soaked cold then heated to a simmer before removing your kombu and mushroom makes a great veggie dashi!
So sorry to hear that Shabu went to the big beach and forest resort in the sky. Had cats for decades and every one that passes is a big loss. Got our first dog since we had family dogs as kids - he's approaching 2 years old now (Yellow Lab) and he is a joy. Funny cat story.. I was making Dashi a few years ago (I for into making my own Miso soup) .. Kombu was in a pan of 'not boiling' water (instant read thermopen was in use) and I had carefully weighed out the very light but voluminous bowl of bonito flakes that I would use. I left the kitchen for a couple of minutes and came back to find Bertie (Burmese male) enjoying the best bar snacks he ever encountered... but it was a bit of a struggle - as you know those Bonito flakes have a life of their own
It''s so sweet that you're a Girl Dad with polished fingernails (I always notice and smile). Also, "Yay!" that she''s studying afterschoolish things like violin and gymnastics. Farewell, Shabu; may there be many rabbits for you to chase (happily) in your afterlife. You've been a sweetie.
Shabu was very fortunate to have such a loving home, and your home was fortunate to have such a lovely pet. May we all be so lucky, and eat so well. I’m gonna have a drink to this. Good dog. Such a good dog. Rest In Peace. 😢
This looks so simple and good! I cooked at a ramen & izakaya restaurant, want to try more Japanese dishes. Sending peace and love to Shabu, Kenji, and all
I'm sorry to hear about Shabu, Kenji. That dog was one of my favorite parts of every one of your videos. She obviously lived a good life and ate very well thanks to you. You're the man. Rest in peace Shabu
I’m very sorry for your loss and feel for you and your family. Our German shepherd who was with us for about 17 years passed away a couple weeks ago due to cancer. It’s very hard to witness our furry friends go. Sorry for your loss and thank you for another great recipe.
Shabu forever in our hearts. Goodest four-legged sidekick there ever was
Goodest girl of any food youtuber IMO. Ethan/Josh/Babish don't have featured pets. Sohla's are maybe 3rd & 4th best. Am I missing any?
:( :( :( :( :(
All they do is care, tirelessly. RIP shabu..
Oof, my heart

watching shabu's last recorded food catch made me really sad. she will be missed :(
@@MeInTheFuture8 shabu's last bite of home cooking :(
I was not expecting this beef noodle video to make me cry
For fucking real though
After that comment about Shabu passing, and having two dogs myself, I really couldn't focus on any of the video.
I never really cry over animals on the internet, what the hell...
@@G8tr1522 good for you I guess?

Shabu Shabu being mentioned in Shabu's last episode is poetic. The best and most gentle dog.

Sweet Shabu. Only saw that she passed now. Thank you for loving her and sharing your food with her and so many others. ❤
Mannnn, I couldn’t handle seeing Shabu after your previous post. Pets are too pure for this world. So sorry for your loss Kenji. ❤
I breaks my heart hearing Shabu whimpering in the background knowing she's no longer with us. I hope she went peacefully. R.I.P. sweet doggo
