as a hyper feminine nonbinary person, i relate so hard to the statement 'im a pink princess but i dont think im girlie." lmaooo

  • @danesook

For me, growing up there was a tendency to view typically feminine things as trivial, shallow, etc. And so, many girls would have a sense of pride in not liking those things and being "one of the guys". This seems to be the result of sexism, and I think we're moving beyond that now and letting people like what they like, regardless of gender. Recently, I've definitely been embracing my more feminine side (I'm a girl btw). I wouldn't consider myself "girly" either, but I enjoy some things that are generally associated with women, and I'm not ashamed of that!

danesook I completely agree. As a girl,I loved wearing skirts and dresses but was never interested in wearing other things typically seen as girly, like makeup or nail polish,so I just stopped wearing skirts and dresses on the basis that they were too ‘girly’ for me.

Came into the comments to make a similar comment...I agree that a dislike or a distaste for stereotypically ‘girly’ things stems from sexism, both from men and women and hoping that we’re moving past that

Exactly! The whole "not like other girls" garbage...which implies there's something wrong with most girls/women!

This actually makes a lot of sense, I also dress in a ‘girly’ way but am not really interested in ‘girly’ topics, but I think the world is slowly (but surely 😊) getting better at realising that colours, jobs, activities etc actually have nothing to do with a person’s gender! ❤️💙💜

You dress like that and carry yourself in that way, you are a girly girl. You really shouldn't try to justify how you aren't. There is nothing wrong with being girly. There is no such thing as "girly topics". It really is mostly about how you dress and your makeup, all of which blazingly point you as being a girly girl.

    • @GeorginasJourney
      @GeorginasJourney 3 роки тому +2

@@HistorysHodgepodge I can’t remember this video & what topics Jessica said were girly- but I do know that all I said was that I wasn’t into those ‘girly’ topics, to use Jessica’s wording. I definitely am a girly girl & wasn’t trying to say otherwise. Just that I’m not into whatever topics Jessica called girly

I totally agree with you on the clothing stuff. What really annoys me about gendered clothing is that my own mother constantly tries to talk me into wearing certain clothes because she wants me to dress more "feminine". But for me femininity is not about a certain type of clothes, it's about what you feel like and I do feel feminine, I just really love trousers, shirts and my short hair. I don't feel obliged to wear certain things just because people perceive them as being less feminine.
I also want to add that I only recently found your channel and have quickly become addictet to it because I find you to be really authentic, entertaining and educating (Claudia too by the way). In this short amount of time (like a week or so) you have already helped me broaden my horizon concerning disabilities and life in general. Since I am gay, your lgbt+ videos have been an added bonus. So thank you very much for sharing your experiences and opinions with us, you do a very good and very important job!
(Btw I'm sorry for any mistakes I made since I am not a native english speaker)

Hello Jessica ... I’m relatively new to your channel but have become a real fan. I have auto-immune issues as well (but not comparable to yours) and, even though I’m in Canada and am old enough to be your mother, I’ve learned a lot from you about attitudes towards disability and about coping with grace and humour. You’re beautiful and funny and it’s amazing of you to be sharing your life this way.
There you go, that’s the end of my gush ...

What impresses me is that you manage to find pinks that really go well with your skin and hair! My Mom (a self-proclaimed ginger) could _never_ find a pink that worked with her hair and skin!! I'm also a MEGA huge fan of Veggie Stix, - an American brand of the ones your friend referred to as "eating air". I love eating fluffy food like that so I get the flavor and texture, without feeling sick like I do with a lot of processed snacks.

I'm super into makeup, hair, fashion etc but personality wise I am really tom-boyish! I actually dress more on the minimal, gothy side. I detest that certain hobbies are attached to genders, it's silly. I might love wearing outrageous makeup, but I also enjoy swordfighting. Neither cancels out the other!

I also like "girly" things, but I've been told that I don't behave "girly" because I am rather blunt. I have such a diverse amount of interests, so I completely understand people assuming that people don't expect you to like certain things based on your appearance.

I used to only wear the 24 hour Super Stay lipstick and was also having trouble with how shiny it is. So I tried the Super Stay Matte Ink and finds it works really well, but the trick is to wait a few seconds and slick Vaseline on your lips. It makes it shiny for a minute, but quickly settles into the Matte and is nearly impossible to get off. There aren't as many colours as the 24 hour shiny version and I've found some colours work better than others, but it's an amazing alternative to the original!

  • @oldasyouromens

There's a difference between being "hyperfeminine" and being "girly", and I wouldn't really consider myself "girly" either, not really. But it really, truly varies, and being gay does have a lot to do with the way I perceive performative femininity. I hate pants and love red lipstick and that weird shade of beigey-pink that appears to be EVERYWHERE now. I aspire to look like Audrey Hepburn every. goddamn. day. Talk yoga and Janelle Monáe's new album with me over hot pink Strawberry Açaí Refreshers. Ask me about my lipstick shade and the historical implications of the Cult of Domesticity. But if you bring up the latest celebrity makeup line or hair removal trend, I'm done with the conversation. Having a deep attraction to and affection for femininity in all its forms has made it easier to pick and choose what aspects of it I want to perform and not see it as shameful. And being "girly" is a word with so much shame attached to it, something boys hurl at you when they want to make you feel small. I almost feel like I should reclaim it, but right now I have the best of both worlds, and it's really freeing. I don't have the words to explain why, it just is, and I'm just me.

I agree! I love traditionally “feminine” clothing, makeup, etc. But I also have a degree in modern European history and love making things with my hands. I once played a game “Battle of the Sexes” (problematic, I know), and all of the questions “I wasn’t supposed to know as a woman” were about military history. So I mopped the floor with everyone. 😉 I don’t like limiting people.

My favorite thing right this second is the fact that you have tiny stubby fingernails just like me! I've never seen anyone with such tiny nailbeds as I have and I always felt kind of self-concious about it and reluctant to polish my nails because that would draw attention to them. But you have them too and you are so awesome and I'm absurdly exited about it. If it wasn't so late, I'd polish them right now. But I just don't have the spoons right now.

I am a girl and I only shave my legs, do makeup, or wear dresses unless it's for a special occasion. I'm not interested in talking about "girly" things. I love my long wavy hair, but I usually wear it up because it's more convenient. I tend to wear leggings, t-shirts, and sweatshirts in dark colors (navy, black, red). I am not interested in sports at all and I LOVE theater.
Despite all of these things, I am a fierce queen.

In the past few weeks, I absolutely fell in love with dresses. It is the ideal type of clothing for this hot weather, which I also really like because if it is warm, I don't have to put on all the socks and coats and this makes the getting-ready-process a lot quicker. That's good. And I also don't have to change my shoes when I come to school, so it is easier for me to come to class on time. (I'm actually not into the hot weather itself, it is quite tiring, but, I must admit, it has its advantages. )

I think I can recognise this, but perhaps from the other way around. Me and my two sisters are... Not your classic girly girls. No... My mother would always say that there is a little bit of gasoline and gunpowder in our blood, which I can agree with. I myself have had a huge interest in literature, history, video games, medieval reenactment (omfg medieval reenactment is the best), and in general, I have never really had a lot of female friends.
Which meant that, for a very long time, I felt like I couldn't be feminine, because I didn't care a lot for feminine things, like they were a source of shame.
It is only very, very recently, that I have been able to admit to myself that I do like the idea of wearing some vintage styles, I think they look wonderful. I would love to get a dress that doesn't have to hide my figure, where I can feel comfortable and feminine.
Even if I would put a black petticoat underneath all of my dresses.

    Same sometimes.
    But all girl things.
I just bought new nail polish and a new top coat since i am growing my nails. Finally is working with nail polish (i tried in the past. Didnt work. Now it is.)
My nails accidentally turned into proper princess nails (just a bit short) cause the pink was a bit too light. And glittery. Yeah really princessy.)
OK. I talked about nail polish yesterday. With a male friend. It was more about nail biting and that he should try it. (I sugessted a matt top coat so youll stilk get the not nice mouth feel of nail polish. But will keep your nails matt, like they naturally are.) And the day before while showing off an irredescent top coat. Someone made a comment.
And i am obsessed with having soft hair to the point i will not even dye it.
I only have 6 dresses in total. 3 of which i actually wear in summer.
Lot of white printed shirts, skinny jeans. Some pink shirts.
No full face of make up though. I am incredibly lazy.
I am obsessed with glitter though. On everything. And shiny stuff. Just not as much on me. But i literally have a full box of glitters.

Claudia said "This tastes a lot like I just ate a bowl of penne pasta". Jessica however said "some people thought it tasted like pizza" so I think there was a slight misunderstanding 😆 Either way the discussion about girliness in relation to gender roles is a good one to have, and I appreciate the points you took up, Jessica!

I'm sorry you can't actually hear your voice very well but I like it a lot and I just put it on and listen to it while doing ordinary stuff around the house. Your voice and pronunciation (i know you worked hard on that part and I admire you for it) are marvelous so even though you can't hear it, it's still a gift to others

I loved the lake district video! now I really want to visit this magical place (too bad I don't live in the UK... or Europe...)
and I love wearing dresses and heels, but I also work as a photographer and love comic books. girly doesn't mean anything today!

You’ve put into words how I feel: I love dresses but I don’t care about hair or nail stuff, lol. I don’t see myself as necessarily “girly”. I don’t want to discuss that stuff either, ha. I just want to dye my hair and wear dresses and talk Star Wars!

Hello, Jessica! You look lovely in that dress, but you look very good in dark colors as well. You have a very nice dress that is dark with bright flowers that I love. Thanks for the new lipstick tip. As for the crisps, I wonder if we can get them in America? Plantangenet is such a lovely word. I also prefer history to nail polish. :). You can learn more history in three books or five tv shows than in all of school.

I would like to recommend the Kat von D Liquid Lipsticks to you. They are staying on SO GOOD and are super matte! Best formula of liquid lipsticks in my opinion (and I basically tried them all xD)

I feel like I’m split down the middle, I like pastels and girly things and will take your ear off about hair and clothes and nails heck yeah. But I’m also a massive masculine nerd eating Cheetos and playing Warcraft, (though I hate sports) I talk loads about male centralised topics as well.

I love skirts, dresses, lace and flowers buuuuuut it's all black so I'm a dark souled feminine girl! I don't like doing much with my hair cuz I'm lazy, don't like doing my makeup cuz Im again lazy but I love doing nails and can discuss nail polish and nail art for days. I love making jewelry too. So I'm a conflicted, dark, sometimes girly girl.

My May favorites include: my adorable, very fluffy, and very fat cat named Chloe, my shiny new B.A. in gender studies and religion, and lastly pomegranate seeds! Also Jessica I loved your 'My Wife Does My Makeup' video and your 'Have You Been Misled' video! Obviously each of your videos is truly wonderful, but those were my favorite this month!

Could you do a favorites video for fun things to do when you're stuck inside? Most videos are for people who are able to be active and it's hard to relate to "run in the sprinklers!" When that's not inside nor easy to do with a low start on spoons. I love your videos 💕💕

My favorite thing this month is epsom salt baths! I’ve been using Dr Teals pink Himalayan and essentials oils bath salts. Lovely scent and relaxing for my tense muscles.
My favorite video was your video explaining PACE, as I didn’t know much about it. I also love that you’ll make videos from the floor when you need to, because you’re comfortable enough with us.

If you want liquid lipstick that'll actually stay in place for a proper snog, even if you're both wearing different colors, Beauty Bakerie is pretty great, and then Lipsense is even better, but it's pricey and a whole process, plus impossible to get off, so I go for the Beauty Bakerie.

OMG, Sinutab! Apparently they have stopped selling Sinutab in the States. My pharmacist actually told me there was nothing that could be done about it - but it helps so much with my brain fog and head pressure. I have a few samples from my doctors office that I have stashed away like gold. Another day in the life of a spoonie.

I'm kind of the opposite on the crisps! I love the Hummus ones (my fave flavour is sour cream and chive - I've not been able to have anything that flavour for years because it's usually dairy). But I don't like the lentil ones and no-one else in my family will eat them either, haha, so I've got stuck with a bunch of them! They also do Quinoa ones, I'm a bit mixed on those.
