Please Read! If you are going to get a kakariki please do focus on the heart disease section. This is very true. My kakariki was a present. I hadn't researched for it. I researched for a budgie. My kakariki then didn't get the right treatment because there isn't much information online. This is a great video! And helped me understand about my old bird a lot! Thank you so much for clearing this up! It has made me settle from his death! Your amazing love of pets!
ive recently gotten one as i woke up one morning and it was just in my house, as i live in south africa i knew it was a pet, i did all i could to try find the original owner and nothing, so i decided i was going to keep it and this will help a lot to keep charlie happy for as long as possible, thank you
I absolutely love these videos you do about these smaller, lesser known birds!! You've really piqued my curiosity as to what kinds of birds would be most ideal for my future aviary. Thank you so much for these videos!!
Everything you said is 100% true!! We love our guy, but he is a super messy eater and BUSY! He's out of his cage whenever we're home because he needs to roam around and yes, get into everything! Eats the edge of books and magazines, chews on the edge of wood cabinets or window sills, so we need to give a lot of soft wood or yucca chew toys. He is on a constant lookout for a girlfriend and regurgitates on anything shiny. He gets really possessive over certain objects and tries to bite our feet all the time :D
My kakariki is around 3 years old, and he is so smart, he talks all the time, but its very nice. I’m working on developing a better connection with him. We rescued buggies and he really loves listening to them talk alllll day
I’m so glad this video exists. I was thinking of getting a kakariki but I could never find any actual information on them, anything I did find was so vague. Thank you for making this, now I’m definitely going to get one!
Still my favorite bird so far. They're so weird, but I can't get over their adorable noises they make. I finally managed to find someone who has hand fed cream and blue kakarikis, so now I'm getting two more to add to my flock soon ❤️
I miss my little blue kakariki so much. Sammy was a beautiful little girl who we only had for a year or so. She laid a couple of eggs but it was just too much for her. The third egg got stuck, we found her very unwell one morning but it was too late. The next morning we got the call from our vet to say they'd done everything they could but that was it, she was gone. Kakarikis are stunning and such gentle birds.
I was gifted a couple of 1-year-olds a few days ago. I immediately had their nails done but the female (a lutino like yours!) Did NOT handle it well and I thought she'd been squeezed too tight or even broke her leg or something... I was so worried she wasn't going to make the night but thankfully she pulled through ❤
💛🌟 🐥🐣 Hello, thank you for this very informative video. Gorgeous sweet birds!!♥️🦜♥️🙂 What lucky birds to have you!! Very nice set up! Thank you for sharing!!🎉
Ive had mine for probably a year and half now. He is such a blessing. At times i think he has said words. Just not clear. But he is lucky he is alive. The part about the getting into everything. Well one of those was a door that shut behind me. Lost his bottom beak. Oh my was i beside myself. Lost the whole bottom beak. The vet was not hopeful. All he could suggest was to feed him wet food. He is such a smart bird. Was not keen on that so he started to eat from the spoon. Instead of me trying to syringe it in. Was not keen on that because i felt his top beak was getting undermined. So yea i make sure he has coffee ground seeds. But honestly i only do it just in case. Because he eats nearly everything like normal. Has a very strong tongue. I just have to make sure i cut his top beak back with a bit of a point. Been like that for 8mths probably. Never grew back. On the funny side though he has a romantic thing going with my little Turquoise. She is still with him.... Tobias the budgie is her side piece ;). But she has refused sexual activity with my Kakariki Since he cant do the throw up thing. haha. But recently she has started to let him. Its absolutely ridiculous as he is 3 times her size. Sorry this is long. Anyway not only is this Turk letting him, the budgie she has been trying to lure my female conure in on her debauched ways haha. No eggs yet so not even sure the Turk is a female.
I love kakarikis! The sounds they make are so distinct and honestly I'm not sure I would be okay with hearing that all the time. I'm sure their activity level might be a little much for me, too. I actually have 4 bourkes and your videos really helped me a lot with figuring out what birds were right for me. I started off with just 2 but quickly realized I'd made the right choice, so about a year later I added 2 more to the flock! Now I have 3 lovely extroverted boys and 1 adorable introverted girl. :) I always enjoy your videos and admire how you manage to keep so many pets happy and healthy! I feel like 4 birds is a lot for me! :D
I have 2 :) they Are super curious!!! But they get bored quickly and you have to give them A LOT of freeflight. But since they can get tame and are interested in everyting, even our trash, its fun to watch them. With kakaraki it never gets Boring lemme tell you. But they dont get like 100% tame.. i know a lot of ppl who have them
I love this bird. They are so cute and playful - with a charming laugh. Also, being a ground parrot from New Zealand (a cold climate with few predators) they are not very heat tolerate, love investigating, and are very trusting.
Awe I’m sorry about sizzle :( I recently lost my lovebird wasabi he was a Dutch blue and was only a couple months old. He also had passed away because of a heart condition. Btw l love your birds and your videos always make my day!!
Out of all your flock, I’m obsessed with Summer! I’m so glad you highlighted this species. Love how she scratches her food like a chicken. Adorable chubby lil doll. Also, I love watching Monty trying to boss the whole flock.. even from across the room. hahahaha
Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot when I was deciding on which bird to get! But, I gotta clarify one thing: nope, the female isn't loud at all. Sometimes, she would be loud very briefly, but usually she's doing cute little sounds. The male though... he IS loud. And he DOES continuous sounds all over again. In Germany, they're called "goat parakeets" because their sound kind of resembles the sound a goat makes. I call him my little goat machine gun LOL
Thanks for a lovely video. We have ordered a big cage for our pair of kakarikis. Now, the bar spacing is 1,6cm which is about 5/8 inches. Read that should be fine. After listening to you I get in doubt. Is 5/8 a hard no, or do you think it's doable?
I have a smol cute yellow green red Kakeriki and she is the cutest thing and she follows y’a around like a little doge and she’s only 3 months old SUCH A CUTE BIRB
Sorry another question, do they get alot with cockatiels,? my female cockatiel is very jealous, shes sad when she sees the kakariki on me....what can i do?Thanks
I loved this video! Summer is adorable and reminds me of my Kakariki Ricky so much! They are like twins! I was wondering if Summer frequently does this bowing gesture in one spot for 30 seconds-1 minute when Kakariki’s “present” to their mates although there is no male kakariki around. I noticed my Kakariki does this often and at first I thought it might’ve been tail bobbing but after lots of tests and taking her to the vet she’s perfectly healthy. FYI - My Kakariki is 3 years old.
I love your hanging play area with the spiral rope perch and others stuff! I saw it in the beginning of the video. I want to do something like that when we get a new house with a bird room!

Makes me sad to think he could have lived his life with no toys :(
hi there, i’m thinking about getting a kakariki on the weekend, any tips for first time owners and do you recommend these beautiful birds for inexperienced owners?
I loved watching your Kakarikis. That was sooo sweet watching your little girl eat with her foot , just as my Timneh does.I had 2 Kakarikis a while ago for a few months. They were babies. One of my friends went on vacation and askes me to take care of them for a few months. I spoon fed them both . They had yellow heads with an all green body, I believe. They were awfuly cute. I just thoroughly enjoyed watching your Kakariki .It reminded me of the 2 little cuties i had. They seemed like they would be very easy to tame and bond.I love to hear you talk and watch all of your birdies, its alway very informative and i always learn something.Thank you soo much for sharing .Take care bye for now , be safe.
Glad my video was helpful. Yes you can feed your Kakariki veggies and fruit. Offer sprouted seeds, grains and legumes. They love it and it's very healthy
Thank you for the video! I was wondering if you could give me advice: I had a celestial parrotlet he was perfect breed not to loud and always just sat nearby me. I see there is a rescue Kakariki that I can adopt. But I dont want to be silly and jump into a new species of bird without understanding them properly hence me finding you amazing Chanel. Do you think if I was a good celestial parent that I would be able to also be a good Kakariki parent?
I would never house different kinds of parrot or other bird in the same cage...that will end in disaster. If you have a large aviary you can mix budgies, zebra Finches or cockatiels with kakariki.
The Best Birds! I had a Male Kakariki, and he was so well bonded with my Family! It was literally as if he was a Human a because he understood me and he understood my family. He knew he was a part of the family, and he knew his name very well (Kaka). Sadly his lifespan was short he was 4 years of age and he passed away in an accident. I miss him very much... The most Curious, Mischievous Birds: Kakariki!
Your information is wonderful and your bird room is amazing. I would love to see a tour of your bird room along with the links of the ropes and things you have on your wall. Also how do you keep everything clean? What products do you use for cleaning?
Hi, I do have some your videos. Here is a link to perches and more that I use in my birdroom Bird Room Ideas www.amazon.com/shop/loveofpets?listId=2UIQ5JLHZZBKE&ref=idea_share_inf Here is my birdroom playlist Welcome to my Bird Room | Birdroom Tours: ua-cam.com/play/PL6uTBIckTWD5XDkb8EVXsxolU7N0gFx3o.html
I have a really important question! My kakariki had a tail feather pulled out by my Conure, after that he seemed fine, but today i went to pick my kakariki up as he cant fly and he lost 4 tail feathers as he slid out my hand His name is red, hes not yet tame either but this concerned me greatly ♡
Hi, the feathers will grow back unless he has a disease like beak and feathers disease etc. Sometimes with stress and handling the bird the feathers will fall out as a defense mechanism. Let him sit on your hand and avoid holding him in your hand as they don't like it and you could damage the feathers.
Love your videos! :) I have a video request; What type of bird(s) would you recommend for apartment living, with neighbors (sound-levels) in mind? Also, I'd love to see a video of just different meals/snacks/food bowls you prepare for your birds. :) Thank you! Happy Easter to you and your birds! ❤️
A little hello from France ! I love your videos, I'd love to have a bird and looking at all your videos is helping make my choice, thought not for now since I live in a little flat but my dream would be to have a room like yours ! Seems like paradise for me ahah. I would probably go for Lennies or Kakarikis I was wondering how long do you spend with them everyday ? Do you like just sit in your bird room ?
Im willing to buy a pair of kakarikes but im so nervous to buy a two females or males so can you explain more about how should i know the gender please and thank you so much for this wonderful video ❤️
Hello! I also have a yellow kakariki, she looks so similar to yours! Her name is "little lemon", in Dutch: Citroentje :) she is about 8 to 9 months old and since june, she has laid 16 eggs! I've been sooo worried about it because she does not have a mate (due to little space to hold 2 of them). She gets a lot of free play and flight time around the house and started laying eggs in the laundry bin. I already contacted the vet and she said that if she doesn't show different behavior or sickness symptoms, she should be fine. But I'm still worried since she keeps on laying eggs... She is still very active, bubbly, shows absolute no signs of sickness at all. But still, I would love to hear your opinion. I don't let her enter the laundry bin anymore so now she just lays the eggs in her cage. She has no nesting material at all. I really hope you can help me to stop panicking! 🙏🏽❤️
That's alot of eggs especially for a young bird. I suggest to let her lay on the eggs until she is no longer interested otherwise she will keep laying. Provide calcium like a cuttlebone, foods higher in calcium or liquid or powdered calcium for birds. Be careful as they can overdose on calcium. Take everything away that looks like a nest. Put her to bed earlier to shorten daylight hours. If she doesn't stop laying eggs ask the vet about lupron injections.
@@Loveofpets thank you so much for your reply! I've already tried to leave some eggs so she could lay on them but she shows absolutely no interest in them... So the vet said I should continue taking them away. I will put her to sleep earlier, hopefully that will help. Should I throw a towel over the cage? Because now, she sleeps without it. She has 2 cuttlebones in her cage and I provide pellet alimentation and fruits and veggies aside that. Sunflower seeds as a treat, maybe 2 or 3 a day. It's very peculiar right? She is sooo fit and active and still lays so many eggs, I really hope she will stop laying them soon 🙏🏽 thank you!
Is she eating the cuttlebone? Offer Kale, Swiss chard or broccoli as they are higher in calcium then other greens. Is your vet an avian vet? If it's light in your house then cover her. Or put her cage in a dark quiet room for sleep or use a sleep cage.
@@Loveofpets yes she eats plenty of the cuttlebone so that's why I try not to worry too much about her. My vet is an avian vet. I will try to put a blanket over her cage so she sleeps enough. How many hours should I provide darkness for her? Thank you so much for your help! ❤️
Wow , your video was so informative, thank you so much. I have been wanting to buy a Kaikriki for some time now. But have not found a breeder with the yellow ones. The pet shop had I almost got that pair. But was hesitated, didn’t know in witch cage thy will be best in. Now with all your info I want to make a decision, I don’t let my birds out the cages. Maybe one day. I have a room for them but I use that room also for my sowing. Decisions....🧐🤦🏼♀️......❤️🌹❤️🌹
Can I use a ceramic heat emitter bulb in my lovebird cage? I pair has layed eggs so I was wondering if this is important to keep them cozy. I have purchased a 50watt. My home is heating floor nice and cozy but just worried at times if the temperature is just right for my birds speicially since they have layed eggs. Appreciate your kind advice
I just received a turquoise kakariki for my birthday. We’ve always had birds growing up and it’s a passion of mine now in adulthood. I have two Indian ringnecks as well. One I personally raised from 3 weeks old. They are kept in a separate rooms though so no worries. I have the opportunity to have a mate for my kakariki but I really enjoy pet birds. I’m told it’s better for them to have a mate. If that is the case I would do it for him, happily. Does anyone have an opinion to share on whether they are better off paired, or would be just as happy single as a pet?
Hi, I was wondering if there's a bird (preferably medium sized) that can adjust to hot weather more easily? I live in the valley so during the summer, it can get really hot ( around the 90s or 100s range).
No bird can tolerate too much heat. It's best to have an indoor space that they can get away from the heat. A misting system can help. Kakarikis have thick feathers that are meant for the cold so too much heat is not ideal. Some birds are more sensitive to heat then others but any bird can suffer from that amount of heat and die from heat stroke.
Me again lol... So i just want to say i buy new canary 6 months old. His name is Mio. His name is Mio because i remember your bird Rio. Rest in peace, Rio! 😉
u said that they don't make a lot of noise, in my experience my kakariki has pick up word that i use when handling him and he usually talks and sings a lot if they know how to talk or whistle or sing, however its very rewording when u take ur bird out the cage and he says "love you." or "Hello" or what ever they pick up or are tort. If u dont like a lot of noise then i would not recommend to teach ur bird to sing s it often come out as screechy tune, but i would definitely teach them to talk. Also thank u for this video really helped as i was debating whether to clip or not clip my kakarikis wing as we live on a big far with lots of trees and hes dark green so he could easily be mistaken for a clump of leaves except from his red cap and there are 4 children who aren always aware if hes out or not, i have put it of for the winter as we dont spend as much time outside and there aren't any doors constantly open, but i have decided to not clip them based on what u said. he know re call so if he dose get out some time i can call him down, and when ever i walk into anther room he follows me and sits on my shoulder. thanks
Hey. with the colder days of winter approaching, what would be the lowest temperature they can be safely held in? my birds are allowed to fly in the living room and ive had a open window until now

i’m thinking about getting a kakariki on the weekend, any tips for first time owners and do you recommend these beautiful birds for inexperienced owners?
My Kakariki clicks his tongue a lot to objects and me😂 and bobs his head when he does that
this video was very helpfull but i wanted to ask you if i can feed my 3 month old kakariki fruits and vegs ?
Glad my video was helpful. Yes you can feed your Kakariki veggies and fruit. Offer sprouted seeds, grains and legumes. They love it and it's very healthy
@@Loveofpets thank you sm!!
Love your bird
Thank you very much for this great information. You did a very good job again on this.
Want truely have a beautiful bird.
It was very helpful. Thank you!
Summer is so cute. I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving
Where can I find a reputable breeder in the USA- preferably in the Midwest? Thank you
Do you have any information about keeping kakarikis with other birds, if they can and what other parrots can be housed in the same cage with one
I would never house different kinds of parrot or other bird in the same cage...that will end in disaster. If you have a large aviary you can mix budgies, zebra Finches or cockatiels with kakariki.
Hi. Can you tell me is the blue spangled kakarikis have heat problems
Do they get along with budgies? Thanks

Interesting
Your information is wonderful and your bird room is amazing. I would love to see a tour of your bird room along with the links of the ropes and things you have on your wall. Also how do you keep everything clean? What products do you use for cleaning?
Hi, I do have some your videos.

Haha they scratch like chickens. :) sweeties
i hav a pair of these green though funny birds so cute.
Wait so Kakarikis can chill with Cockatiels? They're not aggressive at all?
I have a really important question! My kakariki had a tail feather pulled out by my Conure, after that he seemed fine, but today i went to pick my kakariki up as he cant fly and he lost 4 tail feathers as he slid out my hand
His name is red, hes not yet tame either but this concerned me greatly ♡
I will do my best to make those videos. Thanks for asking
A little hello from France ! I love your videos, I'd love to have a bird and looking at all your videos is helping make my choice, thought not for now since I live in a little flat but my dream would be to have a room like yours ! Seems like paradise for me ahah. I would probably go for Lennies or Kakarikis
I was wondering how long do you spend with them everyday ?
Glad you enjoyed the video. You can get the Double Flight Cage for them and they will have plenty of room to fly back and forth and play.
My kakiriki constantly says what you doing, peekaboo, who’s a pretty boy and pepper (my dog)
Thankyou🙏🏽❤️
You’re welcome 😊
Can I use a ceramic heat emitter bulb in my lovebird cage? I pair has layed eggs so I was wondering if this is important to keep them cozy. I have purchased a 50watt. My home is heating floor nice and cozy but just worried at times if the temperature is just right for my birds speicially since they have layed eggs. Appreciate your kind advice
Hi, if your house is warm there is no need for extra heat. The mother will keep the eggs warm.
@@Loveofpets Thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate 🙏
Kindly may I know the easy best recipe to make egg food for lovebirds. My pair has layed eggs. To my understanding egg and millet steamed and cooked?
Alright, ill keep that in mind. Thank you !
Me again lol... So i just want to say i buy new canary 6 months old. His name is Mio. His name is Mio because i remember your bird Rio. Rest in peace, Rio! 😉
Notice how she said "some" seed (when telling about what they eat). Their diets should includes lots of (bird-safe) veggies and some fruit!
I Have the canary bird but he is scared. I Will not give up. I will do everything to give him the trust.❤️
Hi😉
u said that they don't make a lot of noise, in my experience my kakariki has pick up word that i use when handling him and he usually talks and sings a lot if they know how to talk or whistle or sing, however its very rewording when u take ur bird out the cage and he says "love you." or "Hello" or what ever they pick up or are tort. If u dont like a lot of noise then i would not recommend to teach ur bird to sing s it often come out as screechy tune, but i would definitely teach them to talk. Also thank u for this video really helped as i was debating whether to clip or not clip my kakarikis wing as we live on a big far with lots of trees and hes dark green so he could easily be mistaken for a clump of leaves except from his red cap and there are 4 children who aren always aware if hes out or not, i have put it of for the winter as we dont spend as much time outside and there aren't any doors constantly open, but i have decided to not clip them based on what u said. he know re call so if he dose get out some time i can call him down, and when ever i walk into anther room he follows me and sits on my shoulder. thanks
Cute. Happy holidays from our channel: Australian Parakeets Stars
Hey. with the colder days of winter approaching, what would be the lowest temperature they can be safely held in? my birds are allowed to fly in the living room and ive had a open window until now
The lowest that I put my tempature at is 19°c.
Thanks!
