G scale (garden scale) is designed to be run outdoors. There's a video here on UA-cam somewhere of a fella who landscaped his entire backyard to accommodate his railroad. It's definitely worth looking for.
An incredibly well thought out and executed track plan. Best G gauge track plan I've ever seen. It incorporates all of the best aspects of G gauge railroading. The gauntlet track leading outside was extremely impressive.
Phenomenal amount of woodworking and precision craft, but the outdoor layout is my favorite, because I know how much goes into it every year and sometimes every week or every day, with the frost heave and debris to be cleared and track relaid, and the G (garden) scale vibe is really spirited in this video.
Papa Dale was an outstanding figure throughout my life growing up, however we are not blood relatives. I considered him a third grandpa when I was a young one. Sorry for any confusion :). My dad helped build the G-scale layout. Everyone had a good time enjoying it after its completion and I’m glad to see they still are. My grandpa also built a garden railway and I plan to record his Layout this summer in a similar style!
I watched the whole film, was mesmerized by the helix that must have taken some planning but the then loco went outodors into that magnificent scenery and my jaw dropped. I have G scale too, I love it.
The double track between outside and inside reminds me so much of the double track section through the tunnel at the Ber Heights Light Railway in Seaton Deven at the Peco Modelrama grounds. G-scale has become so much fun with the advent of Go-Pro and other small video cameras. Thanks for sharing and all the best.
We were poor but dad had H-O scale train room in the basement, he passed about the same time this was recorded, 6 years ago. Thank you, he would have enjoyed this I know I did.
Well, I have to say. I'm not into trains what so ever, but that was amazing to watch. Thanks for posting this video. You can see how much hard work that went into laying down the track and making it all work.
Check out my Gabis videos! That layout is much larger and is now operated by Purdue northwest. I have a sponsorship to bring trains to run there and I plan to continue making videos featuring Gabis sometime this summer!
I like to clarify on comments like these that Dale was technically not related family, but such a close friend to my family that when I was a Child I called him papa dale because he represented a third grandfather to me. I’m currently working on a video for my blood related grandfather’s layout!
Seems to be how it works. Years ago, nearby local HO layout had to move because someone else bought the place. It was never the same again no matter where it was next set up. And when participants start passing away or people lose interest, doesn't help matters any. Liked what was here.
Just WOW...!!! Love It..!! YES, make more videos...waaaaay more interesting than stationary cameras!! The GoPro thing is COOL..!! Lew (Grandpa from Oregon)
love the set going through hole house and outside. Have a video kendra trains 81 of that same hand cart on my indoor g gauge set under the 027 vintage train above. Heave a outdoor set also kendra trains 74 looking down from above. Your trains hanging from the ceiling is something I have thought about.
Wow! I really enjoyed this video. The double track that leads outside was jast as cool as the helix. I may have to try and make a set up like that. If Mr Olson has any tips on making a track solution like this, It would be great to to get some info back on this unique track exchange.
Hello M.C., my father was a large part in the construction of this layout (not funding). What you are looking at is a custom built track to lead outdoor. I’m not sure if my dad was involved in the making of that specific piece to the layout. However he was majorly involved with the helix and “skyway”. I can ask him more specifics about the (I want to call it Ganter) track soon.
Beautiful frame work . Was a great layout for sure , but am not a fan of onboard cameras . Really didn't show the layout or trains , along with the speed it was a bit to much to watch . Thank you for sharing , it definitely inspired me to pay close attention to workmanship , the helix is absolutely beautiful in simplicity and craftsmanship
Thank you for the compliments and feedback! I would’ve loved to re-record a video on Dale’s layout but unfortunately that opportunity is lost. I’ve been working on switching between on board and “third person” in my new videos that I’ve been editing. I am still working off of prerecorded videos from years ago and I am limited by what I recorded at the time. I still have 3 or 4 videos that have been recorded without intent for UA-cam years ago but will be posted soon.
Wow that was fun! I just love how those multilevel shelves each feed into that amazing double track helix. Why was this dismantled? What happened to this magnificent piece of work?
After years of retirement in the home the Olson’s decided that it would be good to sell their house as they aged. The helix was bought by a shoe store from my knowledge and now displays shoes in a storefront. Favorite trains were kept and others sold.
Typically the biggest worry is deer stepping on the track. Many tracks do have to be leveled each spring but a well build foundation won’t have that problem. One solution is screwing your tracks to a board or a very well built roadbed.
It no longer exists? I can only imagine how heart-rending it must have been to dismantle such an amazing layout.
not if you got to keep all that track!
In theory this should be a dull and boring video, but it isnt, it's mesmerising and inspiring. Utterly utterly brilliant. Thank you.
Just when I was amazed at the size of this track... the train went outside! 😀

I love onboard cameras gives the feel of what it would be like driving the trains trough the layout! Thank you for sharing!!
I am lost for words. Amazing layout!
Subscribe for more insane layouts!
Well that stopped me in my TRACKS from eating my tea , simply amazing.
Great layout and tribute to your Grandfathers work. Such vision and skill. Thank you for sharing.
This is not my grandfathers layout. My dad took a part in helping building it, thank you though.

Only one word comes to mind....OUTSTANDING! OooRahh
Pretty Dog Gone Cool. love the guy on the hand cart. Thanks for doing this for Dale your Grandpa.

Growing up I always wished I had model trains to play with. This looks like the life!
I watched the whole film, was mesmerized by the helix that must have taken some planning but the then loco went outodors into that magnificent scenery and my jaw dropped. I have G scale too, I love it.
Thanks for the ride around this beautiful layout. Amazing is all I can say. 👍👍

This is my second time watching this video and enjoyed it just as much as the first. Sad to hear it no longer exists.
We were poor but dad had H-O scale train room in the basement, he passed about the same time this was recorded, 6 years ago. Thank you, he would have enjoyed this I know I did.
Thank you for sharing this train layout. This is amazing, thank you Dale Olson for the lay-out.

Very nicely done, I bet Dale enjoys watching
I really did enjoy the ride, what a fantastic layout you have. Thanks for sharing your very amazing work!
Whoa!
A totally amazing amount of work has gone into this vast layout.
The biggest I've seen to date.
That is nothing less than awesome! 😊👍
Check out my Gabis videos! That layout is much larger and is now operated by Purdue northwest. I have a sponsorship to bring trains to run there and I plan to continue making videos featuring Gabis sometime this summer!
Wow simply Wow in a private home no less😳can't imagine how long it took to accomplish this layout. Thanks for the great on board views🚂👀
Great tribute. Best regards to you all from New Zealand.
Wow, thanks Pappa
Wow. I mean, I've loved model trains growing up and I love this video.
Just as others have said, mesmerizing and inspiring. Thanks!
That was one strong little dude!
Fantastic work by your Grandfather. Your Grandma must also be the best to support his passion. Smiled for eight and a half minutes.

That's how I do it, too. Forget the scenery, just run the trains!!! NICE!!!
What an amazing layout and collection! 👍
Just when you thought it was over…. Then it goes outside 😂
Serious level of time, cash and craftsmanship! Thanks for sharing!!
Absolutely amazing. I collect G scale. I love the live steam Gs. Do sad it was taken down
Live steam is really cool, I’d love to get into it someday. The Prox G trains 😉 run off of battery.
Wow! Very Nice! thank you for the ride.
Thoroughly captivating, thank you for sharing ❤
That was beautiful.
Eso fue hermoso.
Gracias por compartir un pedacito de la felicidad que Dale dio al mundo, a su familia, a ti al parecer.
Saludos.
Thanks for showing. Great.
Nice Layout, it never ended,
Seems to be how it works. Years ago, nearby local HO layout had to move because someone else bought the place. It was never the same again no matter where it was next set up. And when participants start passing away or people lose interest, doesn't help matters any. Liked what was here.
what an awesome layout
Beautiful! This is my dad's dream layout. Nice work! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome!!! This video was better than watching real trains. Your Grandfather was GREAT!!! Unbelievable layout I watched a couple of times!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! I would like to clarify however that Dale was not my grandfather but just a really great and close family friend.
Excelente trabajo. Felicitaciones
I don't know what to say. Thank you.
And I think my Christmas Tree train is cool!
Amazeballs!!! Great jobbie
My mom is really good friends with dale. I used to do this train thing all the time as a kid and now it’s gone. 😢
A bunch of that layout is leaning against the wall at RealWood
Extremely Impressive!!
Thank you so much for posting! I loved it! Great job!!!
I'm thinking picking up 6 go pros for 5 of my G scale trains. but I do like the layout and great tribute to your grandfathers work.
That was an awesome track! Thanks for sharing.
Magnifique, bravo, j'adore...

At 00:13 it has inspired me on how to store and display my trains one day
that was an awesome layout
Just WOW...!!! Love It..!!

3:10 omg. Giant people !!!!!
Wow!!
Amazing.
Thank You for making.
Thanks for the ride, it was most enjoyable. Some of blue lettering was hard to make out.
I’m still figuring out which colors are best to use, I decided to go with a Conrail theme 😂. I’ll have to consider changing that.
Fantastic!
Awesome set up & Great channel I admire you're family passion for trains. Keep up the fun and wonderful memories 😎👍
I subscribed
Thank you for your support, The videos should not stop soon! I just don’t have a regular schedule it’s just whenever I get them edited. Lol
Amazing…. Thank you
This is some layout!

That handcar operators wife is one lucky lady when he’s got moves like that!
Amazing layout! 🔥

You have to take 2 pieces of track and build one inside the other. You use switch frogs for the end of the track to split apart.
I was able to stop the video and figure out how it was done. I really appreciate the reply
This is great, thank you 🙏🏻
The cost is monumental on its own.$$$$$$$
Excellent !!!! 👏🏻👍🏻
😁 love it, thank you.
Wow that’s cool
Amazing
Very cool
This is pretty awesome my dude. I would have loved to see it in person but, I'd understand...

Magnificent
Thank you.
That was amazing!
Wish I has the skillset to build a big helix like this.
Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vincia, and Ben Franklin would have been amazed at the art and technology.
all that aristocraft track!!!
What a great tribute. The track layout was awesome! However, I don't think the trees are to scale... =)
Especially not the red wood!!!

A "vertical yard"...
@@daleolson6633 lol. Yes! Well put.
how does one maintain the track outside. arent people worried about weather wrecking the tracks?

Subscribe to see more train videos and what layout we show next!
I'm writing from Italy to congratulate you and to ask you how long the railway line is.
To my knowledge it was just under 1400 feet on the mainline!
Красивая пара.
👍
👍👍👍
The guy on the hand car is fit.
Imagine if you'd had Z scale in that space!!!!
I'm always so sad to hear that such à nice layout needed to be dismount for any reason.....
