  • 20 years worth of footage of the Southern Resident Orcas of Puget Sound. This is all taken from Lime Kiln Point, San Juan Islands Washington. These Orcas (and many other marine animals) face problems in the wild including pollution and diminishing food sources. You're right! I am very glad you pointed out their freedom, one of my goals with the series of Orca films I have produced is to encourage people to see the Orcas in the wild. One of my favorite things I hear when working on this video is when people (mostly kids) say, "This is SOOOO much better than Sea World!!!" it truly warms my hear Thanks for watching!

    Lovely. Finally saw 'Blackfish' today and my heart is just crying for the orcas in captivity. I so need to go whale watching since I'm here in Seattle; I've been here for years and STILL never been! Anyway...beautiful.

    Got to see their relatives and friends in 1978 in The Sound. Probably 20 adults with three calves on the way to Vancouver. Amazing.

    Summer is the best time to see the Orcas. I definitely recommend making a trip up to the Islands or booking a Whale Watching Cruise.

    I love orcas!! I really would like to open a sanctuary in that area and maybe relocate and rehabilitate Tokitae, and eventually/hopefully reunite her with Ocean Sun and the rest of her pod.

    Have they had any problem with Orcas attacking people in the sound?

    • @tsksnowboarder
      @tsksnowboarder  10 років тому +3

      Hi Neil, this is an interesting question. There have been no documented wild orca attacks on humans in the Sound or anywhere else in the world. The only recorded attacks are those in captivity (which I think says something about their state of mind in those living conditions). In Puget Sound, we primarily have Resident Orcas, whose diet consist of salmon. We do get Transients that come through, those are the mammal eating orcas, they mostly go after seals and porpoises in this area.

      Thanks Tamara. So basically, if they approach a kayak, there just being nosey or playfull and if something bad happens it's probably accidental or someone being stupid...like the rest of nature. lol

      ***** All of the footage in this video is surprisingly taken from land! Lime Kiln State Park is one of the only places in the world (excluding captivity) that you can be on land and this close to orcas. That is thanks to the unique geographical landscape and the way the islands were formed. This park sits on a deep strait, so once you are at the edge of the rocks, it plummets downwards to 30+ meters I believe. There are actually a lot of kelp beds in this spot and the orcas love to play in it from time to time. It's a real treat to be on the rocks when that happens.
