This is the second video where I can see you need a special plastic tool to open the laptop. I've spent almost 30 mins trying to open it and achieving nothing but broken nails. What were they thinking when they designed it?
I'm not sure I'd really call it a 'special tool' - a plastic spudger, or pry tool, is pretty standard for working on disassembling any modern electronics. You could use a small, flathead, screwdriver, but any metal tools will mark and indent the plastic.
@@BrueComputing *"pretty standard for working on disassembling any modern electronics"* Which is precisely why I call it a special tool. The average person doesn't disassemble electronics. :) Anyway, I succeeded by using a dinner knife. About an hour's work with only minor marks.

Awesome just what I need to upgrade my wifes laptop, I was wondering if I could fit an 8 gig stick of ram rather than the 4 gig or even a 16 gig stick she does play some games so more ram will be of benefit to her. I would probably put a 1 TB or a 500 gig m.2 in as well as there is no other way of adding storage other than an external drive which is also an alternative. I have fitted the hdd enclosure in place of the dvd drive but these don't have a dvd drive so that rules out that lol.

@@Jordi_SP SSD stands for Solid State Drive. The M.2 drive is an SSD using the NVMe interface. I think you're asking about adding a 2.5" SATA drive, which can be either a HDD or SSD.
@@BrueComputing yes, I already knew that you meant solid state drive when you said m2... but today at this point nobody calls the new M2 nvme modules ssd anymore. I don't know if I explain myself. saying ssd today is used to name the old 2.5" ssd disks. of course each one can refer as they want, but everyone I know no longer uses the acronym ssd to refer to m2, so we understand each other better for when we refer to module M2 and when to ssd of 2.5. It is a very good way to differentiate between my clients, so there is no room for doubt. since a 2.5" ssd is much slower and older than any M2 nvme
Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but can you do this to any ideapad 3? Just asking as there seem to be different models. And because I am pretty clueless.
No. No modern laptop (besides some gaming ones using desktop parts) have an upgradeable CPU. The GPU on these is either integrated into the CPU, or soldered to the mainboard, so the only way to upgrade them would be to swap in a higher spec mainboard, which is unlikely to be economical vs. just selling it and buying a higher spec laptop.
How is thermal heatsink? It's have copper metal when changing thermal paste? I want to change it to liquid metal but I don't know if is possible or not.
If it is the same as mine then 4GB will be soldered down and cannot be upgraded, and the other 4GB is socketed and can be. So you could install an 8GB module and go to 12GB, or a 16GB to go to 20GB.
@@johnsburgers7784 It has a bit of a performance hit in gaming with integrated graphics, but for general use shouldn't give any issues so long as the memory speed and timings match.
@Brue Computing , Thanks for the Video, it was indeed helpful, I do have one question, I recently bought the same lenovo model, and I was wondering, once you install the nvme ssd, would it be possible to remove the hdd ? I say this in the hope of speeding up what has turned out to be a really slow laptop and I want to do this also because it would leave space for a possible installation of a bigger battery, if this is at all possible, I was hoping you might have any suggestion as to which is the biggest battery model I could fit in, for the longest possible battery duration, any info will greatly help, thanks in advance for any help!
Thanks for the comments! Yes, if you install an NVMe SSD you can remove the HDD - you'll obviously need to either clean install or clone across your Windows install to the SSD. Not sure if Lenovo do a larger battery to fit the extra space, but they might. If you find out let me know.
They do make aftermarket batteries with higher claimed capacity but in the same space. There is not an option to fill the HDD bay with a battery. But you will see longer battery life with just the M.2 since the spinning disc takes about 12 times more power to run.

Is that the ACH6 model? If so then it can support them, but don't know if it includes the SATA cable and mount if a drive isn't installed, so you may have to source those separately.
Just realised you said a 3.5" drive in the original question - obviously that won't fit. If it has the cables/brackets in place it'll support a 2.5" SATA HDD, although given the low cost difference I'd fit something like a 1TB SATA SSD: amzn.to/3N2FudT

No buddy, the slot is there for different configurations of the same case. If you have no sata connectors in the bay itself, you can't add a 2.5 ssd. There are no sata headers on that board. Just one m2 ssd available. Also, when buying memory, do you see dual channel? As using different manufacturers, speeds, voltages etc will not enable dual channel. Is the max RAM 12GB? 4 hard wired & 8 in the slot? A neighbor tossed out a 3, like yours, not sure of the full model #. Also is the power button a fingerprint scanner? Thank you for a great tutorial! Oh! Can you reset windows (10 home I think) using the Shift + Restart method? 🤔
Hi, thanks for the info! One question: Is it possible to use both, an SSD + HDD on this laptop?
If you can get hold of the cables and mounting bits it should be possible, but it isn't supplied with them.
I have the same computer (in a different color) but it doesnt come with the hex riser and doesn’t have an ssd. Where can I get the hex riser? I already have the ssd

Should be similar.
@@BrueComputing *"pretty standard for working on disassembling any modern electronics"*
Which is precisely why I call it a special tool. The average person doesn't disassemble electronics. :)
Anyway, I succeeded by using a dinner knife. About an hour's work with only minor marks.
@@crypticdelights6924 You should be able to open this laptop without using any tool at all. All you need to do is to open the lid half way and keep the screen side flat on your lap so that the base of the laptop is against your chest. At the right corner you will be able to feel a grip and just try pushing outwards. The back cover will separate from the base at the corner. Then with your fingers you can slowly pry open the entire cover. This process works for most Dell/HP/Lenovo laptops.
@@crypticdelights6924 i just opened mine with a thin guitar pick. Works like a charm
I just bought this laptop 2 months ago and I'm experiencing usb port problems. Sometimes, plugged in mouse, keyboard, ethernet adapter, etc., gets disconnected. After it gets disconnected, it takes time for the laptop to read the plugged in devices again. Sometimes, the laptop doesn't even read it and takes time before it does. Someone help please!
You should be contacting Lenovo for support.
Thanks!
Hi I did the same thing except when I turn on the laptop the screen flickers and it doesn’t start, any idea how to fix this?
The same thing happens to me..hopefully there is an answer here...
James Ray maybe the new ram isn’t registered in the bios or something...idk.
Thanks Brue! i was wondering to upgrade the memory is it possible for me to just do steps 6:03-6:45? I'm kind of nervous of doing the parts that you showed in the beginning of the video. Thanks!
Not sure how you expect to do that? You have to remove the base before you can install the memory....
You don't HAVE to disconnect the battery, but I'd strongly recommend it.
Nice. Also can I install 2.5inch sata HDD / SSD for same ideapad 3 series. Pls tell me and guide how to purchase good one pls.
can you share the parts number for the SATA cable

hi i have IdeaPad 3-15IGL05 Laptop - Type 81WQ, when looking inside to upgrade the memory there isnt a carrier to insert a new card, it just has a sticker saying 4mb and not where to put an additional or replacement card where you show on your main pcb
Some sources incorrectly state that only 8GB of ram can be added. They are wrong. A 16GB DDR4-2666 works fine.
Спасибо тебе за видео!
Sorry for this basic question, but how many slots for the ram does it have? I got two similar ones and one is totally broken, so I'm thinking if I can add the ram of one to the other? Can you let me know? Thank you in advance!
It has 1 slot. The rest of the RAM is soldered to the mainboard.
@@BrueComputing thank you very much. So, just to clarify, in addition to the ram that it came with (soldered), you can add an external one, like you showed in your video?
Helpful
Glad you think so!
why would you reinsert the cover you're supposed to remove it when you insert a ram..
And where is the upgrade of SSD? only the M2 can upgrade but I think that is not possible put a ssd :/
The M.2 drive is the SSD.
@@BrueComputing M2 is nvme drive, not ssd .. regards
And because I am pretty clueless.
can you upgrade the cpu and the gpu also?
U can upgrade gpu to 2 gb in bios
How is thermal heatsink? It's have copper metal when changing thermal paste? I want to change it to liquid metal but I don't know if is possible or not.
Sorry, I don't understand the question.
which exact m2 ssd brand & model is build in originally ?
i want to compare speed to a ssd model i already own.
thank you
I can't remember I'm afraid - it was a customer system so can't check it.
Hi. I have the same model of the laptop but it came with two 4gb ram 2667MHz, could this be upraded to 16gb ram?
If it is the same as mine then 4GB will be soldered down and cannot be upgraded, and the other 4GB is socketed and can be. So you could install an 8GB module and go to 12GB, or a 16GB to go to 20GB.
Thanks so much, this helps out alot
@@BrueComputing Thank you. So its not an issue to not have symmetrical sized ram cards?
@@johnsburgers7784 It has a bit of a performance hit in gaming with integrated graphics, but for general use shouldn't give any issues so long as the memory speed and timings match.

Nice video !!😍😍How to replace LCD for Lenovo slim 3?☺️
@@BrueComputing Thank you for your help!
They do make aftermarket batteries with higher claimed capacity but in the same space. There is not an option to fill the HDD bay with a battery. But you will see longer battery life with just the M.2 since the spinning disc takes about 12 times more power to run.
@@zedorda1337 thank you for your input, will make that change soon!!
What screwdriver did you use for Lenovo m.2?
can i remove my hard drive? because I do not use it anyway and I think it just drains the battery. Windows is installed on my ssd anyway. So is it okay if I will remove it?
Yes, you can remove it so long as it doesn't have the boot loader on it. Could also replace it with an 2.5" SATA SSD.

Hey James, I'm upgrading the same laptop SSD right now, and I'm using a Team Group 512gb m.2 2280 gen3x4 SSD.. I cant get it to boot to the ssd though, it keeps saying there is no bootable media? I have a USB flash drive plugged in with windows 10 loaded onto it (I've used it many times to install windows) but it doesn't seem to recognize the usb or the new ssd. Any ideas?
How did you create the USB stick? Is it set up for Legacy CSM or UEFI booting?
Have External Bootable devices been disabled in the BIOS?
What options do you get if you load up the Boot menu?

Do my Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 Ryzen 5 5600h wi support 3.5inch Desktop 1Tb Seagate HDD
Is that the ACH6 model? If so then it can support them, but don't know if it includes the SATA cable and mount if a drive isn't installed, so you may have to source those separately.

Does a Samsung 980 pro with heatsink fits in this Idea Pad 3? Or it needs to be without heatsink?

i contact to the support customer and they said that this type of this cant upgrade the RAM. What a disappointing!
If you have this model then it can be done, but customer support will say no as its not considered User Serviceable.
I recently got this laptop and added 8GB of ram, giving me a total of 12GB which is great (2GB used by the Radeon GPU). I see a caddy for a 2.5 inch drive, but don't have a sata cable. Presumably there is a slot for a sata cable, given that there's a caddy for the 2.5 inch drive?
No buddy, the slot is there for different configurations of the same case. If you have no sata connectors in the bay itself, you can't add a 2.5 ssd. There are no sata headers on that board. Just one m2 ssd available. Also, when buying memory, do you see dual channel? As using different manufacturers, speeds, voltages etc will not enable dual channel. Wondering what ram I need to get to achieve dual channel. This video doesn't state which is pre soldiered, which is important info to know trying to dual them uo.
Does anything have to be changed in the bios when upgrading to a 2280 from a 2242?
Nope.
@@BrueComputing so i installed a brand new 2280 team group ssd from a guy on ebay that had pre installed windows 10 on it and for some reason the laptop would not load windows. it just simply said ("default boot device missing or failed. insert recovery media and hit any key then select "boot manager" to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media")
I tried to see if there was any settings in bios to change for bootup and there was not. The seller and i agreed to send it back to him and he plugged it into his laptop and it loaded windows no problem. I have bought sata ssd from for a old acer laptop and that worked just fine.
Could it be because i have to load windows into it after installing the new ssd and it for some reason cannot have windows preloaded from another pc?
I have the 2021 lenovo ideapad 3 that i was trying to upgrade.
Anything thoughts? thanks.
Does upgrading the RAM only affect the laptop data, meaning do i have to clean install windows again or no need.
Yes, upgrading the RAM won't affect this.
Do you know what are the screw/standoff measurements? Mine didn't come with them so i don't know how im supposed to install it
Hey, so this has a 2.5inch Bay for ssd or laptop Hdd, but there are no connectors or leads, Any chance you know of a way to connect it even with 3rd party cables?
Can I do this upgrade on the 81WB (IdeaPad 3 15) model? I don't know if this is enough information, and I'm super new to the hardware stuff so checking what the actual motherboard is would take a bit. Also I'm looking to add an 8gb DDR4 3200 to it.

...where would you put it?
hello can you upgrade mine to a gaming one please.
Do you know what size spaces it uses? Mine didn’t come with one and I ordered a 2.5 with 2.5 height but it’s too small it won’t screw it just keeps turning
please, hep me to substitute the external part... i realized i prefer the silver version...
You can swap the shell, but its probably not cost effective (the plastic parts tend to be expensive) and I think the screen is probably stuck in, so be careful not to damage it.
Disappointing that the machine doesn't have a couple of small covers to access the ram and storage.
Very few do these days.
