Thank you for this review. You saved me $30. I was expecting Sci-fi, and a continuous world. Not we wound up getting. Guess I'll be waiting for the next Open world Survival game. Such a great genre and very rarely gets done right.
It's a pretty fun game. I like it. I played rust and I wish rust was like this. It's not a perfect survivor game but I really enjoy the process of the mission. and the crafting and leveling up is fun to learn. I'm pretty picky about these sorts of things but for 30 bucks this game is worth it. They are also adding to it and expanding it. I payed for anthem and that was half of what this game was and I spent 60 bucks. Just saying.
DayZ is good and all but I wish there was more of an objective aspect. The weather, wildlife, firearms… it’s all decently good. I want a game very similar but without zombies and a story. A bit more wildlife wouldn’t hurt. This game seems like it has a lot of potential but I guess we’ll have to wait and see with updates and whatnot
In all fairness, they were pretty open about the fact that this wasn't a 'continuous' survival game. One of the core aspects of this game that makes it unique was always going to be the whole "nothing is permanent" mechanic. You build the bare minimum that you need for you to complete your mission and then leave. If you were expecting something else I don't think that's the developer's fault, in all honesty.
I appreciate the honesty. I've had the same thoughts about this game watching you and other content creators play it. It is interesting to watch but I also recognize that playing it would make me frustrated for the same reasons you've mentioned. That said, I'm a big Valheim lover. If you wanted to go back for the hearth and home update, I personally would love it. There are enough changes to the game to be worth exploring the world again. Anyway, love your videos. Keep it up Z.
I felt otherwise with valheim update. Did 300 some hours and everything in game basically. Then tried it again with hearth and home update.... Was not enough for me to replay it... Not even 20% more items to build. Still love it, but that big update was very lack luster to me especially for being delayed so long.
@@krich106 Sure, but 300 hours has to count for something. I haven't finished everything or put in 300 hours so the game still has that sparkle for me. It has been my favorite game for a whole year though.
I love valheim and I think for 20$ it has paid dividends over and over. As survival build games go im addicted to making awesome villages and houses. I keep looking for new games the like, but I haven't found something like it yet.
Sad thing is that the community talk to them on Discord and we complain about the building thing. They still don't want to do it. My point of view was if I'm returning to the same place and spot my building should be there. If I go to another planet obviously is not there. But if I return to a mission on the same planet I should have the same building even if I spawn at the other side of the map and travel just to find my old spot. But no. Everytime you leave the planet destroys your home. -___-
At least i’m not the only one thinking the same. Where’s the terraforming “disaster”? everything else is perfect, but no breathable air? luckily there’s magic oxygen producing rocks that leave you with a constant need to forage, that’s important to a game, right? my biggest gripe is honestly the oxygen dichotomy where you can’t breathe without your suit and a constant supply of oxygen, but the animals, trees, plants, etc are all fine. there’s nothing to explain that, which just feels like the spacesuit/oxide mechanic is added to force you to have what is essentially a second health bar.
Another thing is that if that mission timer runs out, it deletes your character. Like what happens when you have a life and need to take more than a 6-day break midmisson, well kiss goodbye to all of your progress. Not just fail the mission, lose your character completely possibly 100's of hours of XP, there is no reason at all for this to be a thing.
When they ran the Betas so close to the release, it was pretty obvious that it was done, and they weren't making any changes. They used the the Beta to soften the blow on release day.
The lore of the game is that this alien planet was tera formed and seeded with Earth critters. The tera forming went wrong because of a substance called "exotics". This poisoned the atmosphere, but flora and fauna was bio-engineered to adapt to it. This is why the player still has to wear an environmental suit (not a space suit). I think the player has to start fresh because the weather is so bad, I'm assuming my base has been wiped away while I was on the station (who knows if that's lore-accurate or not). I love the content, love your channel. I appreciate the honest review and that you provide constructive solutions that'd make the game better for your playstyle. Hopefully the devs hear your message and can incorporate at least some of your suggestions.
The Dev Q&A on their UA-cam page was really interesting. Sounds like vehicles are still coming. I do wish they had called this Early Access, in the Q&A they had philosophical reasons to go straight to 1.0 but I wish they had listened to the players closer in that regard.
Totally agree. I think it would be awesome if you went to a totally different map with the option of visiting your old base. But the same thing… 35 times…
I think part of the rhythm of the game is going to be figuring out the minimum you need to complete a specific mission, and how to get to that point as efficiently as possible. Maybe you don't need a full-size base. Maybe you don't need late-game crafting stations. Maybe you can get away with bringing key tools/weapons from the station (once you've unlocked them) and just making enough of a shelter to set spawn and hide from storms. I don't think you're going to need to fully climb the tech tree 35 times (unless you just enjoy doing that, of course). For instance, the second mission is doable with wood/bone items, you don't need to get to metal unless you just want to take the opportunity to grind levels in a relatively safe context.
While I understand what you are saying, the game that was advertised does not look like the game that was in the trailer. It looked like a 1st person Valheim on Alien worlds. Trying to figure out each missions “rhythm” does not sound fun to me. A continuous world does. It’s almost like FPS, like Anthem, that adds challenges into the main game because the game loop is so weak, they have to artificially extent it.
@@ewjiml I agree the trailer seems to have given a mistaken impression on a number of points... (still waiting for the cute alien cat-thing...), but the devs have been emphasizing "session-based" co-op since the beginning and described the wipe-and-restart mechanism as far back as the initial beta weekend, IIRC. So I don't think there has been any attempt to be misleading, just perhaps not putting enough emphasis on how they expected the game to play out....
Absolutely agree man. The whole game is a total contradiction of itself in terms of what is on offer and what they've done over the past few months to gimp the gameplay. Those animals, the supposed AI, it isn't gonna get any better. They feel fake. The animals are the bread and butter of this game and all they are is a detection radius and a fight or flight response. Non threatening creature- RUN AWAY. Predatory animal- ATTACK KILL AT ALL COSTS. Of course bears can climb sheer cliff faces faster than Stalone in Cliffhanger. I even saw one with a Sherpa guide. The whole thing feels cheap, like it was done on the cheap and with little ability to provide the goals of what they were selling as an end game.
Yeah the "restart from scratch each time" thing is problematic. I hadn't seen the original trailer and it is surprising to learn this was supposed to be a sci-fi title. Seems like your evaluation is very on point. I wouldn't mind seeing a video like this on any game you put significant time into regardless of how much you do or don't like it.
Would be even cooler if the animals transformed into a more alien appearance when they are about to attack you. Oh look an average bear... NOPE! Now it's Grizzly size and has 4 deadly arms!
I enjoy the non persistent world, keeps things feeling fresh for me. I usually get bored in other survival games once I’m done building a base I like. Def not for everyone, but I like it a lot
You earned a subscriber. You are very detailed, and the information you provide is excellent. This is the type of reviews and opinions I want to hear when I comes to these type of videos. Thank you for your hard work.
Agree with many points. But think many players go into this game with the wrong expectations. It is not meant to build a super large base on every mission. You go in, craft what is needed for the job and get it done. Most missions I craft enough to make a small 2x1 room, put crafting table in, get bow, get maybe tailor station to make leather armor and pack that up when done crafting. You can carry the stations and walls/floors with you so if needed slap it down, sleep, cook, pack up again. Sort of a nomadic playstyle. On the storms yes they are a nuisance sometimes but most of the time you don't need to seek shelter. On later missions they damage you and staying in a dens part of the forest gets really dangerous, but by that time they also add a lot of background storytelling. Storm is coming you can see that a red alert phase is close so either quickly put up shelter or try to hide in a cave. There is one mission with constant storms in part of the map where you have to carefully manage sheltering and making your way through calm parts of the storm which is quite an interesting mechanic. Just playing that creates its own adventurous tale.
Okay, I hear what you're saying, but I just have to ask this question... Why do they give you tiers higher than wood? Why do they give you anything more than primitive longbow and some fur armors and such that you get from killing predators? The game isn't set up the way you're claiming here, but your playstyle seems to be encouraged by the actual missions. This game seems like it is designed to draw in all kinds of people, and then only reward one type of game play style
@@Thoron_of_Neto you need higher tier stuff in later missions. The ice biome for example has storms that completely destroy wood constructions in seconds. So you need to build stone shelter to survive. Higher tier ores need better pickaxes to even mine them and you need the ores to build the top tier tech which then give you exotic ores that is a currency you use at the station to get better equipment that you can keep between missions. But yeah the game lacks a lot of balance and has a lot of bugs that need ironing out. So would not call that a full release yet. Also whish it was not completely roguelike, just using that playstyle cause game promotes it that way. But I would love to take stuff like crafting stations back to the space station to use it on the next mission. Think the devs overdid it with the roguelike aspect. But game is still fun to play if you accept the nomadic playstyle.
@@DennisRyu yeah, I feel like the devs made this game in such a way that it draws in people from all over the survival genre, and then pulls a swap, and makes it a roguelike speed runner, leaving those of us looking for a twist on the survival aspect feeling lost because the mechanics are contradictory... I'd prefer it if they'd set it up where you took a prospect, to mine, and any materials you harvest have a (probably tiny) value to other prospectors. I mean,, the term prospect implies there's going to be mining involved, but anything you mine, except exotics gets left behind. I'd like it if while you're on the planet, occasionally missions come in that you can complete for money, or you can spend all your time building in a base, and mining aluminum or titanium to sell back at the station. The concept that these things are so worthless that you can't even bring them back up from the planet to sell or craft more advanced gear before the drop is such a bizarre choice for me. The game has loads of potential, but it feels like it's designed for a different type of player than it's marketed toward lol.
@@Thoron_of_Neto Well I try to be positive about the game cause I see a lot of potential with it. The mechanics are interesting cause they make you think about what you do and present a challenge. Controls (apart from the clunky building) feel good and way better then plenty other games. And in the end being constructive is way better then all those people raging on the steam forum about every little thing they think is bad. So I try to play the game as it currently is intended to be played and actually have a blast doing that. Trying to figure out the right tools for the mission and optimizing time is a lot of fun. Weather and debuff mechanics give an interesting edge that you have to factor in. Yeah there are some issues like a polar bear spawning on your head but well it was just released and seen AAA titles that were a hundred times messier then this. Also the devs seem to be very active and responsive. They know and admitted that the release was not really smooth and are trying to do better. What people forget here is that game developing is still quite a lot of work. They were monitoring everything the whole weekend long and stepped in when for example the server crashed in a very short time. How many other developers have you seen that sacrifice their whole weekend? So yeah I have hopes that the game gets better. Until then having fun with it exploring what it has to offer.
@@DennisRyu oh, please don't take this as me just raging, I believe there is a PHENOMENAL game here, it has all the workings of something I can sink thousands of hours into! I just think there's a disconnect between the prospect timer, and the mission. Give me an onslaught of missions and 7 days to build myself up, and make me play until the very last minute of the drop timer, then pay me for the missions, and I'll happily restart! As the guy that gets pigeon holed into base building for my team though, they're out doing things and having fun, while all I'm good for, is building up the base, and their levels are so much higher than mine that they can utilize the workbenches so much better than I can, that I feel like a base building character is useless with the way the game is built right now, but the blueprint/talent points are doled out so sparingly, that my only option is to start another character for combat, and with my teammates being 20+ in level, already, my level 5 character still feels useless as well, and I'm the only one stuck swapping characters every time we do a drop, and we keep doing drops every few hours. I don't want this game to grind the fun out of me, and they're having a blast, but like I've said, I feel like this game is (in its current state) drawing in people from all over the survival genre, and only rewarding a few types of playstyle... I hope things change in the future though, but knowing my friends, by the time the game is fun for me, they'll be bored with it lol
Let me preface by saying, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Here are my thoughts; The main game loop, such that it is, is intended to re-create that feeling you have when you start a new survival game. So, instead of getting to end-game and going, "okay, I'm the god of this world now... guess I should start a new character at level 0", you get to have that "start fresh" feeling, but still be high enough level to craft better items and equipment immediately. The station items also make the starting over a little less grindy the further you progress, without breaking that "start fresh" game loop mechanic. I absolutely agree with the lack of aliens, the somewhat over-the-top punishment on debuffs (boy, they _really_ don't want us living in a cave!), and the lack of a "good" explanation for things like pneumonia. But we sort of hand-wave those bits for "reasons", because it gives us more of a challenge. The devs seem to be very involved with their community and listen carefully to reviews like this, so I expect this game to get "better" over time. Cheers!
I very much agreed with your assessment of this game. I'm really lokoking forward to the next 2 expansions in the game, I think its going to do a lot to add a more spacey vibe. Hopefully they will keep being on point with the updates and community contact and not do a runner. Cheers :)
So from what I understand, Icarus FIRST COHORT is chapter one and they are planning additional chapters which will have you going to more alien areas. The second chapter is set after an apocalyptic event, which sounds interesting
Thanks! Started playing it, realized that it was quite weird the "mission complete" thing on the left, now that I know it restarts every single mission, for me it's just a nah entirely.
AWESOME!!! I LOVE honesty... I was on the fence but after watching several game play videos - This game is totally a false advertised game!! And they will not get my money!!
Missed so much info, the tec tree is why you start over and over again. You lvl up and this gives you progression. It's a grind yes. Also there is a sandbox mode if you just want to build and play without missions and need tongo back to space station. Ya I agree why no alian stuff, or mounts but thes may be DLC.
I discovered this game in beta through this channel and I bought it on the strength of that beta. I do agree that it feels early access, and I think the developers made a big mistake calling it a 1.0 release. That said, I very much enjoy the game loop. I only build as much as I need to get a mission completed. Getting up to iron tools takes less than an hour realtime once you have the feats and blueprints, and at least at the difficulty the game has gotten to so far (I'm 5 or 6 missions in) I haven't needed to even bother smelting steel. I played Conan Exiles pretty obsessively, and this game avoids my one big gripe about that game - once I have a base and the tech tree completed I have no inclination to play; those first 10 hours when you're vulnerable and trying to get by are the funnest part of the game.
One thing that's different with each build of the base is you have more of the tech tree unlocked so you can build better bases. You can also do more faster because you have more already unlocked.
That’s what I was thinking. One of my bases burned down, but I didn’t have room for some things I unlocked, now I have a room just for crafting, and lightning rods. I only wish there was sustained electricity and the ability to have an atmospheric systems in your base so you aren’t wasting your precious O2 while crafting (like Stationeers)
I think its a new sub genre in the survival genre called expeditions. You should only be preparing as much as you really need to, and building a super small base 3x3 max. Get some food for healing and others for buffs (if needed), a bed and campfire and prefab wood walls if you want, experimenting with hedgehogs for fighting bears and polar bears. Ive done all of the forest missions and there we're ones that i under prepared for and ones that we over prepared for. All of them i did without iron weapons ( i had basic station tools with me)
To clear up the loadout/workshop portion. You can bring up to 10 items with you. The end line axes are about equal to platinum or titanium tools. The first tool you unlock is better than stone and bone, but not as good as steel. The good thing about the 300+ credit items is that the pickaxe would allow you to mine the higher tier items. Also, you wont be building a base on every mission. For example, the bio-sample mission can be done in 10 minutes if you know the location of each of the bio samples.
Just started playing this, accidently found speedrun for deep vein, so I am doing that one, unlocked the first pickaxe, takes me 12-15minutes to do it naked, and if polar bear spots me, I just unstuck away, never build any base ever, no point building if I lose it in 5minutes and have to do it all over again, don't need food/water/oxygen or anything if I finish mission under 15min
i played the first 2 missions (the first one being dropping in and then leaving again) and after watching your video i'M very sad. You basically confirmed a lot of what i was suspecting. A lot has to change in this game for it to be good, until then it's just something i'll play when i don'T have anything else i want to play
I think they plan to start with a familiar world, and slowly over time it will become more apparent that it is actually an alien world. I can't help but feel the future will make things more sci-fi
Yes the game still need some more work on it, when it comes to base building with having to rebuild all each missions does need a change to it they could add a cargo drop with a work bench and other work station or they could add damage bases in the world where you could find the work station, when it comes to the storms i do not hide from the storms myself as I use storm chaser stamina regeneration during a storm , I also think they should the solo talent points that are not part of the other talent points as the solo talent are locked in multiplayer, save having two different characters
My only exposure to this game initially is through your channel, so the game is exactly as I expect that it would be. I was also hoping that the outposts would be a chunk of terrain that would appear on every map, and perhaps be an inconvenient distance away from your goals for the mission, but would be there all the time. That way you still need to craft your temporary bases, but the steel manufacturing centre (for example) could be available if you wanted to hike all the way to it.
I get your point and totally agree with the alien aspect. There are really weird things like no oxygen but water, plants, animals... you put leather armor over your spacesuite and helm. You drop off from space not even with a tool... The game really need some tweak and polish done, that beeing saied, i have fun with it and i think it´s worth the 20 bucks for me. Right now i do the missions with the least amount of grinding and building, i hope there will be reasons to build better shelters than stone and better tools than iron. I have the recipes but never got that far, because i could do everything with stone/bone tools. I´m lvl 30 on the 6 mission so far.
Hear me out, you finish a mission to survey this planet, then you get back to the station, get rewards or level up etc. Then you have to go into cryo sleep for X amount of time, so when you go on the next mission, everything changes. Terrain, environment, weather. You could be there to monitor the “long term” environmental/evolutionary course of the planet, before humans colonize. So every mission could be different, yet your base could be persistent, just weathered over time.
I can agree it's still early access and needs a lot of work especially with preformance. also the game is based on risk and reward system which means it's up to you if you want to build a base 35+ times I have not had to as some missions Don't require a base. As for the wildlife ya we need more exotics while the narrator does explain the animals have been genetically modified it does a poor job stating what point of the planets evolution we are in because if it's early mid point that would explain the rarity of exotics and abundance of regulars like boars, buffalo, wolves, bears and why you don't see the other life forms as much like mammoth and tremors. For the livewire mission your going absolutely overkill on it realistically to complete it and have fun you just need a bow, arrows, spear, a pole(thatch or wood your choice) and that's literally it maybe a bed roll if you want to sleep the night.
I played a few beta weekends, and even the third drop was starting to get tedious, the game is a fun survival game but i think once everything is unlocked it would hit a massive "now what" wall. I got a refund and will keep an eye on it to see how they develop. I also bought it because you made it look fun, so keep up the good work with the videos.
100% honest review and agree in every aspect. The answer on the missing Sci Fi aspects was explained on their discord as they are planning expansions where other parts of the planet that are alien are accessible. I don't like the answer but it is what it is. Expansions which will be late 2022 / 2023 are actually shown on the supporter edition that is $100, which is too rich for a regular gamer like myself. Thanks Z1
One thing I am wondering is if they plan to make a "season" based content path for this game. possibly call them DLC, not sure. However this is called the first cohort. We are some of the first people to land on Icarus and to explore it. They could release propsects that lead into needing to conduct a "second Cohort" which would be a more polished and more expansive map that might be able to support vehicles and this new land may not have terraformed as well as this area. The lifeforms deviated in evolution from the Earth based genetic seeding. Things start getting wierd. Season 3 (third cohort) it gets even weirder and more alien. basically with every cohort they push more into Sci-fi and less earth like. There are hints from Sol (prospect manager) about how much of icarus is unknown and that exotics have a large impact on life on planet. Tool tips on some blueprints hint and the effect of exotics also even on micro-organisms. I just really hope the developers are in this for the long haul because what i've heard and seen im left to believe there is a lot to come on Icarus's surface as we gain access to new areas outside our current map.
Wipe is one of the most annoying and hated aspect of building/crafting games, and they thought it's a good idea to build a whole game on that as a feature :D
In defense of the mission system, I really wasnt sure I would like it at first. Turns out it's actually one of the things that makes me love this game. If it was a persistent world, the multiplayer wouldn't be the same at all, you would join a guy who already has a base and just equip yourself and run to the objectives. With how it is session based, if you want to play for a night you can find random people on the discord, and play a mission, build a base together each having their speciality, say one has stone buildings unlocked so he's the builder, another one has more yield from mining iron another one is hunting and making beds for everyone to spend the night. Also, the game balance seems to fit perfectly with this, it doesn't take a lot of tree cutting to make a small house. If it was persistent, they would probably make it much slower to build stuff and to make all the equipments. Right now you can drop and in like a minute make a pickaxe an axe a knife a bow and some arrows. Also, you can use rare ressources like iron to make arrows and disposable stuff if you have extra iron for example. while in a persistent world, you would save it for important stuff as it is not an infinite ressource. The mission themselves tho.. not very interesting.. usually just running to a place and fight some enemies. There are quite a lot of bugs with them too.. sometimes you will not even have to fight anything and sometimes it's way too hard.. like a wolf boss who calls wolves.. like 15 of them I kinda like the lore and the idea it's a terraformed planet but I also would like more aliens. I think they could just modify the animals slightly and say they were genetically modified to be able to breath the planet's atmosphere or something like that.. cause right now what is the bunny breathing that I can't ?
I agree with the lack of alien aspects and that it feels like an early access game. There's at least another map I can see based on the mission progression, so me and my friends are trying to rush that. So far, we're having fun with it, but the game bugs are more of the problem for us when it comes to ruining our fun. I did notice that some new animals started showing up the further in the mission list we went, so hopefully we'll be seeing those weird animals in the future. As for vehicles, I can't imagine it in the game's current state as you mentioned, but hopefull we'll be getting a sort of more open version of the current maps we're seeing. It's definitely a problematic start for a game, but I do hope we'll get those things we're promised by the devs in the upcoming dlc's they planned. I'm excited for Dangerous Horizons because it looks like it's going to be a sort of swamp biome with giant bugs.
currently you can take a total of 10 items plus your suit down to planet, and as long as they are in your inventory upon return you get to keep them, the slots in the drop pod on return are only for exotics currently.
Very honest review of the product. Appreciate the consumer friendly review bro. I was going to pick it up this weekend but now I will check back in a year to see if it improves. There are already plenty of survival games out there to scratch that itch so picking this up just for that is not worth it to me. Yea, I don’t like the build over and over stuff unless its done in a fun and compelling way. Thanks again for the review.
For me, one of the best parts of this game are the wide range of specialization/optimization you can do if you're playing as a team. My husband and I play together. He loves ranging and exploring, I'm more keen on building bases and seeing what I can do with the construction aspects. So we take the talents/tech that suits us, don't double up too much, and enjoy making things work. I also have a couple of outposts running so I can work on elaborate constructions, which is a good time for me and keeps my level up to his without a lot of extra grinding. I do wish there was more 'alien' on this alien world, though. I want to know what's attached to that eyeball in the loading screen, or where that giant flower that looks like it's in a lake of blood is. As always, found this video entertaining and informative. Thanks!
"Being constructive" doesnt matter when i as a potential buyer is wondering if i should buy this game. If i am looking to buy a house and the guy says "yeah, there IS mold everywhere, but it can be removed by [insert tones of time and money]" Im not gonna be like "wow that was a thoughtful and constructive criticism". im simply gonna go look at another house. When i saw it was on discount i got hyped, i love Sci-fi/space games and survival games. I am leaning towards not getting this game now.
You know who did base building correctly in a survival game? Subnautica. They never forced you to do something, but rather, the game pushes you to the right direction and then leaves you to figure things on your own. Like for instances, most players that plays subnautica will naturally build mini outposts throughout the game as they explore deeper - while many survival game is all about building that 1 mega base. I think if this game went towards the subnautica route, it will really have something going for it. I want to build houses and outposts for a reason and naturally, not because i am forced to start over after every mission.
You seem to have missed the core premise. The planet was terraformed as an earth like colony. That’s why the wildlife, and plants, are similar to earth. Different missions are to different colonies. Some environments evolved more, or less, than others. It’s also supposed to be a multiplayer cooperative. Like “No Man’s Sky”. It’s not quite there yet, but with enough people playing it, it SHOULD be much more immersive.
I agree with everything you said, but I'd also like to add what my partner said about this game. You are coming from a highly advanced society (Earth) And you land with absolutely nothing on you outside your suit. No tools, no weapons, no ability to store food, water and oxygen. In no real life scenario would you willingly do this. Even if the stuff you bring is basic, until you can lean to upgrade it from the resources you come across. In Ark Survival Evolved, this type of beginning makes sense, because your character is kidnapped. But in Icarus, you purposefully journey to this remote location with nothing but the clothes on your back? Really?
So to clear up some of your confusion. The reason why it's so life like is because Icarus was a failed teraforming attempt. That's why it's so Earth like. They supposedly have the Wulv in the game as it's in the skinning bench. But yes the trailer was very misleading and they have communicated the change to some extent. The vehicles will be added later they said and there is a bigger forest area up north on the other side of the Artic. Also the air is poisoned and the animals had been altered to survive there. Against explained by the narrator. Cooking makes the food safe to eat. They stated it's an "Initial Release" and want to treat it as a games as a service. But if it quacks like a duck.
Got attacked by a worm alien looking thing in the caves. It shot a glowing projectile at me. I think it was put there to deter building in the cave. It's on a respawn timer.
I’m actually glad you made this video. I was thinking about picking it up bc I love survival/base building type games but if I have to essentially start over after every single mission…that to me is a hard no
You go up after a mission..some time passes..and storms wipe everything.. Next drop all you have is your knowlage and maybe some tools you fab on the station. Thats the story. It fits...unless you want more. I get some do in fact want more. There is however an outpost. What i would consider a retirement area. Everything stays there..bit its small and boring. Perfect retirement area. Its a great game dispite it not being what was originally invisioned.
@@korvoth4269 I think I would be ok with that system if they had a way to maybe create blueprints of things you build or a packaging system to box up your build and bring with you.
Good rant. It was honest, and obviously not done for the sake of click bait. I recently returned to Dyson Sphere Program. I’m having fun collecting the Steam achievements. I’ll stick with that for now.
The weird thing is that their other "big" game, Stationeers, uses Unity 3D engine, not Unreal. And developers usually specialize themselves in one of these engines. It's strange to see a studio splitting their resources and knowledge into two different tech stacks, especially since both basically do the same. It's expensive to train existing developers to use a different stack, and one can expect that their productivity on the new stack will be pretty limited for 1-2 years. So I wonder if they hired a completely new team for this game, outsourced the development, or what. I also don't know how do they share parts of their code base between the different games to expedite development; I guess they can't do that when one game is written in C# and the other in C++.
- and it's not just 'build a base 35 times' it's 'buld the same base on the same map in the same place 35 times' If there was always a diffeent location I'd thin it would help. Thanks for the honest review, saved me a lot of time. Go play 7DTD instead then - rgr.
Everyone is going to play the first mission, build their first house, get lost in that fun, then actually complete the mission and realize that they will lose the home and items. What beginners in this game don't quite realize at first (myself included) is that the more tech and ability points you begin using, the quicker that getting started process is each for each mission. I also enjoy that re-do experience. Each time we went down, my brother and I tried to do something more aggressive each time like skip thatch altogether and go straight to wood. This experience is missing from your comments about the game. They made the harvesting experience really fun for trees and minerals in my opinion. You also work your way into better gear that allows you to take down a bear without it being a panic run away experience. (Which is a blast by the way) I think they play tested and realized that making the game a needful task to prepare for your mission is a way to appreciate the leveling system and a more raw experience. You should fear the elements in a survival game. The storms are easy if you carry the materials around to build a small structure. If you skipped straight to aliens and vehicles in the first 10 hours, you would completely miss the point of the game. I think they made the right choice by making the building and leveling fun. Exploring areas that may have baddies you can't contend with yet is tense because you have to sneak around and you aren't always successful. A clear strategy in the beta was to draw a bear into the water and have your mate shoot the heck out of him until dead. As I leveled up I learned to get accurate with my arrows, make sure you are hidden on the first shot, and land it in the head. Keep shooting as they charge you and don't panic. If you gave yourself enough distance, the bear is usually dead right about the time It gets close. Challenging task, but if your group wiped and learned to take down a bear, pretty rewarding. My beef with the game is the leveling penalty is a little odd. One tip I recommend is that if you think you might get killed, make sure you have just leveled up to avoid a whole level penalty. All in all, a really fun game. Play with friends for sure as you will find the getting started process a little easier that way. Spend your points sparingly and save some for just in case situations. Don't always spend your points on the same things if you can split skills between you and your friends.
I 100% Agree, with all your points. Not a 1.0, oxygen is stupid when everything else is able to breathe. Given 2-3 years this game will probably be amazing but its current state its a basic survival game that you have to redo every time you start a mission.
100% agree with what you said about the storms. Game mechanics which discourage you from actually playing the game aren't fun. Seems to me the only real purpose those storms serve is to put more pressure on the player to go complete the current objective, in which case they could accomplish the same goal by sending an emergency alert along the lines of "meteor approaching the planet, better wrap up and get out of there before it hits" and subtract 30 minutes from the mission timer.
Thank you for the honesty, Saved me some bread. I prefer sci-fi games, space, technology, etc etc, but there's only so many times I can play different versions of DayZ. They still have not learned how to make real survival games. Everyone uses the same format importunely. Thanks again.
You showed the loadout Z where you can hold the suit and 10 things. So you could hold the armor, the suit, and more. The beginning space station tools aren't the best, but they are there in case you want the extra convenience of not having to make them. I personally just make a tiny shelter to skip the nights, otherwise the storms never hinder my gameplay unless they are the flash storms which can make things electrifying. Also, on the game dev side, animations can be brought over and tweaked, if they wanted. The creatures could have been what the trailer had, but to be honest, they aren't finished with the game yet because they've even said so themselves. Also the trailer that shows when you load the game is full of basically showing human greed and such. Giant flower around a pool of blood? Basically showing that many prospectors die just so the corpos, sitting pretty in their space stations, get the exotics. Also if you really want to be surprised, you should look at the last tier of blueprint unlockables. Now while I do agree, on some points Z, aren't you only on the second mission of the game? I do enjoy your videos, but sometimes you give reviews/rants without fully experiencing things, like with Satisfactory, Farming Sim, and some others. Which then your review/rant can sometimes be answered by delving deeper into the game and it's mechanics.
If the game is not finished it should not be called full release, it is early access at best. You shouldn't have spend 100 plus hours in a game to finally get it to be fun, it should have consistency of fun, not fun at the start, brain draining middle of the game, finally fun again at the end.
Thanks for the heads up review. I was going to get this on the Steam Sale and I although I think Icarus might be an awesome game someday, that day is not today. This gamebreaker is a deal breaker for me until it gets ironed out. This is just awful to release a game in forget Beta, this really is almost Alpha form if that is something they CAN'T...sort out. I'm not puttin' up with that. Let 'em fix it, then I'll consider it again and I hear the maps are extremely monotonous also. No Man's Sky really has delivered on all the promises and much more since release. This Icarus looks a little like different parts of various Far Cry games from what little I've see at this point but maybe the next expansion will fix that bug and more because this can kill a game in it's tracks if not fixed before the hype-train goes full-blown, 'Mass Effect Andromeda' all over it. I have seen it happen.
It's the game where you can't breathe without mining rocks for oxygen, but everything everywhere always burns down the second you get a torch anywhere near it. For some reason. Without oxygen.
The charcoal's in game description says the atmosphere does have oxygen but it's low, not enough for humans to breath directly, and not enough for clean combustion, hence the charcoal. Somewhere else it's stated that the atmosphere is also poisonous (i think its the in game audio from the first mission). So a helmet makes sense. Still, a advanced suit should have some mechanism to get oxygen from the atmosphere even if the oxygen content it low, and filter out any poisons.
I knew I should of waited for reviews, one of my gaming buddies wouldn’t stop talking about this game so I got it before the sale ended, it is really annoying to me to have to restart every time, and the combat is so boring already at mission 3, didn’t even know vehicles aren’t here yet until now. Great review my dude!
The DLC Chapters will have 2 alien planets that will prob be more open. The game isn’t 100 % polished but they will update it constantly but it doesn’t sound like your a survival fan since you just want to have fun. Survival games are suppose to be challenging but in any I see your point of view.
You are so correct !!!!!!. I love survival games and I want to get this game and when I saw your video, I was so shocked at why the video that was released a year ago was not the same as the game that is V1.0. Makes no sense. I think that your views are totally sound. I really appreciate your feedback on this game.
Very on point 'review'. I'm enjoying the game - but only on mission 2. I can see the starting with nothing getting old very quickly. The only thing that lessens the pain is that you have unlocked more stuff. There are a few too many contrary aspects. We can't breath but animals can, spaceship drop but only have stone tools, normal crops in a oxygen light atmosphere, etc. I think it seems to be a game that had big ideas but ran out of time/money to be the game it wanted to be.
I agree with you, plus I have issues with why they dropped you with nothing. I'm sorry, if they can afford to drop you in a multi-million dollar rocket, they can afford to send you with a pocket knife or a bedroll. Or a means of breathing. Keep alive your investment
I agree on the more early-access like status currently. it's a pretty good early access state, but clearly not 1.0. But on the atmosphere somewhere early on in the story they did say that the atmosphere is poisonous for humans and they had to genetically modify the creatures to be able to breath it. So the helmet at least makes sense. But if they are terraforming then the atmosphere would contain significant amounts of oxygen (otherwise you wouldn't start seeding it with earth-like life), that a advanced spacesuit should be able to extract that oxygen, or otherwise filter out the poison, so that's still weird. Maybe they should have changed it to be a filter you had to replace constantly, that would have made more sense overall.
When it is stated that the terraforming when wrong I get the impression they are mostly talking about the ability for humans to live their (breathability of the air, the aggression of the animals towards you and not each other, sporadic out of nowhere thunderstorms, etc.). The devs have hinted at more alien life and vehicles in future content releases so I'm hoping they come through on that.
I think they are basically doing a version 1.0 the base game. They have cave worms, sand worms, mammoths and alpha wolves, that's hardly basic I think they have held back a whole lot more because UE 5 isn't ready. They probably had a deal with Epic Games meaning they cannot release a portion of their content until UE 5 is released in 5 months. So they most likely just wanted to prepare the base game with all the simple concepts then when UE 5 releases fully in the next quarter release the next probably 2.0 launch. Followed by the expansion pack 1 6m after that and the second 6 months later. Well that's how I would do it. Along with releasing between 3-10 missions per month BTW you don't actually always need bases.
Z you also forget that even though it was not mention anywhere but this game runs as a live service unlike ark or satisfactory type of games and sooner or later there is gonna be microtransactions in the game to make servers run. Another "fun" thing in game there is something called offline mode and originally they were saying that it will be the full online version game in offline mode you to play by yourself and only difference being you cant transfer characters between offline and online modes. reality is offline mode dont work if you are not connected to their servers so not only you need internet to play the "offline mode" you also need their servers to be operational. and in offline mode you dont have any access to the workshop and cant earn any meta currency to buy or upgrade your gear so just the inferior version of the game that you play solo while connected to their servers
I wasn't following the game, but I payed attention to the game play and heard what the game was supposed to be about. I think you hit the nail on the head Z1. Bugged the heck out of me seeing all the normal earth animals on a planet called icarus that were breathing alien air.
I have the same feeling from the game. I enjoyed building the base during the beta. but for the third time in full release, I didn't like it at all and I uninstalled the game.
I understand the aspect of restarting, in the idea of when they ship you to new areas. BUT when/if they return you to an area you already built that project should remain. Maybe a little bit damaged but your stuff and foundation should be there for a faster start. and you can fix up -> upgrade/update from there. Also the storms Aren't terrible it adds to the danger of the environment so you cant just ignore it but i wish the wind storms would effect the area around you more. the only storm so far that has had any real affect is the thunder storm. Rain and Wind storms you can for the most part ignore. Also something i think worth noting with the removal of aliens is there is nothing specifically "after" you per say. The predator animals only attack you out of instinct, I think it would deeply drive the survival aspect if you were being specifically hunted by the inhabitants of that planet.
@@shawns4354 not necessarily, the wooden base alone can last a few storms before sustaining critical damage. And then now that I'm at stone it's even longer.
@@jimbeam8338 Your character and orbital station progress. It's not a Suzie Home maker like Ark or Rust. It's more Akin to Tarkov with its session based approach. Either way they dropped the ball here.
Totally agree that it's not a 1.0 game. There's craftable items, like fishing pole or fish traps, that have a 'coming soon' tag. The backpack and watermelon buff didn't even have icons until it was just recently patched in. Very strange indeed. As for not being alien enough, I figure it's enough that they terraformed the planet to be, well, earth-like. The 'company line' that 'something went wrong', I'm not buying. The idea that the planet is suddenly incompatible with human life the very moment they discover the most valuable material ever... seems suspicious and is a purely capitalistic move by the corporations.
I completely agree with you regarding the animals in the game. Maybe they bought the ready-made and animated 3d models, for lack of time, or even for a change of prospects... But, please right... I sometimes "make"( really bad) and have some fun at programming silly games, and I always make the models in Blender already with the animations... No matter how bad was the 3d model, it's my creation! Lol... I've seen people commenting that it would make sense for animals to be the same as those on Earth because we humans terraformed the planet... I dont know man. Yes, I guess... for the logical perspective... but for the Sci-Fi aspect... :( The rest of the game, with the exception of the vehicles, which I also think will be difficult to implement with this stage of the game, doesn't bother me. I actually liked it a lot. Thanks for the video!
Great information, thank you. Lets hope they continue development. My only thought is landing a space ship in a biodome will subject that evironment to potential impurities that would make it fail before the engines cooled. Then, after centuries of sceince, we are using rocks and bows...again. Then, we hunt and kill wildlife, strip the land of trees, fauna, and ore to complete a mission. The problem with terraforming has always been the humans. When I first land, I cannot help but notice a near perfect environment...wait...what am I supposed to do?
My theory regarding why your character needs a so-called spacesuit: In the thousands of years to terraform Icarus into Earth mk2, humans, having spent generations in orbiting space stations, must now require a pure oxygen environment to survive. Icarus's atmosphere is only 20% oxygen so without a breathing apparatus, breathing on Icarus is like breathing on Mount Everest. The suit provides the extra oxygen to survive but doesn't filter particulates (hence susceptibility to pneumonia). It's not really the terraforming that's screwed, it's the humans.
Well, in pure oxygen atmosphere you'd spontaneously combust. Along with most of your stuff, including normally non-combustible things like metals. Even if it goes up to 50-60% any kind of fire would be virtually unstoppable.
A friend of mine tried to sell me this game since he loves it but the need to constantly rebuild sounded pretty bad. However, it seems like a minute issue compared to this asset flipping. You hit the nail on the head: they did this because they could just buy the assets. They probably realized the sales weren't going to be enough to make the game they showed in the trailer so they decided to just take a massive shortcut: remove aliens, stick to stuff there's cheap assets for, work on the code instead. THAT is why it came out of early access, because they probably ran out of funds and it meant they could call this completed. There are a gazillion survival games already which are very similar but many of those have a much better setting & include stuff like zombies and other proper threats. Environmental threats are about the lamest & cheapest threats you can have since it's basically count downs. Very lame.
I've been playing nonstop since release and i agree with everything you said. I hate the weather system that makes you stop playing. I hate running so far everywhere for each task and starting all over 35 times. I think i will stop playing and wait til they add and take away certain mechanics.
Your reasoning is completely valid. Gamers were ooooo'd and ahhhh'd with the idea of an alien planet, alien plants and animals and a cool looking vehicle. When the final product arrives and has zero of that, there is a legitimate reason to feel ripped off. Game devs are just like politicians these days. They promise a lot of things and talk a good talk, but they don't follow through with half of it and are never within the timeline they promised. It also doesn't make sense that you can be ok in a wood building or cave during a storm, but when you're under water you're still at risk. Overall, this game is a big disappointment. The bugs, the crashes, the game deleting you're entire prospect for no reason after a crash, the inconsistencies, the fact that they pushed back their release date 3-4 times, the lack of sci-fi, logic, vehicles, no open world, 7 day cap on missions, constantly having to start over....meh. I wanted to really like this game. It's a bust.
Only played a few hours, but one of my first thoughts was “why do all survival games have bears and wolves?”. I think you’ve hit on the issues with the game exactly. It’s not a bad game, in fact it’s fairly good and could be great by tweaking the mechanics to remove some of the repetitiveness. But it’s not what we expected or what was advertised and that is a bit disappointing. I feel like they’ve created the lore of terraforming to fit the assets/animals they’ve used.
the tools are sort of worth it, they have good durability and bonuses, and it repairs automatically every time u launch a new prospect, you can lose these items. except the suit.
Honestly, if they were planning to make the planet so much earth like. It would have been a far better concept to make us play as an intelligent alien who lands on earth before humans came into existence with few new creatures designed for the game that are supposed to go extinct. Having a different planet that is exactly like earth just doesn't sound right. I don't see how anyone would prefer this over 'No Man's Sky' or any of the popular classic survival games.
@@Arez455 let’s be honest, we ALL know what Rust is and was made to be. Face punch designed things in Rust for PVP.
Yea cuzz Dean hall sucks.... Look at this one though has my eye currently "Derelicts"
Hearth and home is great but not really enough content to start a new world for.
If you know you are going away and can't play just leave the mission before? Most missions can be done within an evening or two
When they ran the Betas so close to the release, it was pretty obvious that it was done, and they weren't making any changes. They used the the Beta to soften the blow on release day.
Yeah, the "late beta" is bullshit.
If a beta is within 6 months of release you know its not really a beta and more of a marketing stunt.
"The game we were shown wasn't the one we got"
Cyberpunk 2077 players: first time?
Thank you for an accurate review. Too many people gushing about nothing.
2:00
*I've never heard someone's voice "drop frames"* 🤣
I feel the exact same.
"feeling fresh" Losing all of your progress and having to do all of the exact same things over again is the exact opposite of "fresh" lol
You earned a subscriber. You are very detailed, and the information you provide is excellent. This is the type of reviews and opinions I want to hear when I comes to these type of videos. Thank you for your hard work.
Glad it was helpful!
Oddly enough I was just looking for a video like this.. ideal timing!
@@gaerdvickery7642 I think lights are in tech tree 3 along with a biofuel generator.
@@tr4l1975 oh yeah, I know. I’m just not there yet. I am about to unlock tier 3
I was looking for Sci-Fi and Building. But both of those have been shown not to truly exist. Thank you for such an awesome and honest review.
i played the first 2 missions (the first one being dropping in and then leaving again) and after watching your video i'M very sad.
Thanks Z1
Ty, "Move along not the game we are looking for!!"
Can some one say "Christmas sale", that's the reason for 1.0
100% agree with this... i actually feel cheated through false advertising
1:21 "as you can see we are on a planet" cheers mate nearly forgot
Read the description for the upcoming DLCs. What you said is exactly what is going to happen.
@@e1lg537 Oh! Wow I was just theorizing haha. Good to know there was a roadmap that I missed that confirmed my theory. Thanks I look into it
Wipe is one of the most annoying and hated aspect of building/crafting games, and they thought it's a good idea to build a whole game on that as a feature :D
In defense of the mission system,
I really wasnt sure I would like it at first.
There are quite a lot of bugs with them too.. sometimes you will not even have to fight anything and sometimes it's way too hard.. like a wolf boss who calls wolves.. like 15 of them
I kinda like the lore and the idea it's a terraformed planet but I also would like more aliens. I think they could just modify the animals slightly and say they were genetically modified to be able to breath the planet's atmosphere or something like that.. cause right now what is the bunny breathing that I can't ?
I agree with everything you said.
The game is an early access game without the label.
There is literally still unfinished stuff in the "released" game in the UI.
Can’t you report the game for false advert cause they really did false advertising
Are new sci-fi animals in the endgame?
@@janpala5922 sadly, i'm not in the endgame yet. there are definitely more animals though.
currently you can take a total of 10 items plus your suit down to planet, and as long as they are in your inventory upon return you get to keep them, the slots in the drop pod on return are only for exotics currently.
If i am looking to buy a house and the guy says "yeah, there IS mold everywhere, but it can be removed by [insert tones of time and money]"
Im not gonna be like "wow that was a thoughtful and constructive criticism". im simply gonna go look at another house.
When i saw it was on discount i got hyped, i love Sci-fi/space games and survival games. I am leaning towards not getting this game now.
I thought you were able to build an "outpost" base that stays put and you don't have to rebuild everytime.
The thing that gets me is all these earth animals that are there can breath but "the air is poisonous"
My initial thoughts were “this is just an ark/the forest wannabe” however….I now know I’m only partially right
All of the alien stuff is meant to be coming in future biomes. The vehicles and such as well.
Maybe they bought an unfinished game from another studio?
Seems to me the only real purpose those storms serve is to put more pressure on the player to go complete the current objective, in which case they could accomplish the same goal by sending an emergency alert along the lines of "meteor approaching the planet, better wrap up and get out of there before it hits" and subtract 30 minutes from the mission timer.
kinda breaks my heart i had watched the initial trailer and then saw nothing else until this. thank you for saving me the cash.
The air is toxic. The narrator tells you this in the early missions. In fact he clears up most of the concerns.
@@shawns4354 not denying that but why are animals that look normal not affected?
I agree with you, plus I have issues with why they dropped you with nothing. I'm sorry, if they can afford to drop you in a multi-million dollar rocket, they can afford to send you with a pocket knife or a bedroll. Or a means of breathing. Keep alive your investment

you are the Alien on earth not an Earthling on an Alien Planet :)
LOL "WHAT IS THAT! THAT AINT A RABIT" LOOOL THE WHAT IS THAT got me
I agree on the more early-access like status currently. it's a pretty good early access state, but clearly not 1.0.
They have cave worms, sand worms, mammoths and alpha wolves, that's hardly basic
I think they have held back a whole lot more because UE 5 isn't ready. Along with releasing between 3-10 missions per month
BTW you don't actually always need bases.
In the desert there are different creatures and you need to try it out and the different missions also. But you don't have patience ! Good luck!
The storms destroy eeverything. That's why their is no persistance.
@@shawns4354 not necessarily, the wooden base alone can last a few storms before sustaining critical damage. And then now that I'm at stone it's even longer.
Only the storms that come thru on the approved drops. Look up their Fatal Sky trailer. It's apart of the lore if you take a look.
@@shawns4354 What a terrible mechanic. There's no point in playing it if none of your progress means anything. Total waste
The rest of the game, with the exception of the vehicles, which I also think will be difficult to implement with this stage of the game, doesn't bother me. I actually liked it a lot.
Thanks for the video!
Spot on what I thought about the game and I didn't even played it.
I'll wait a year or two see where this is going.
I literally do not see what the game adds, that every other survival style game doesn't already add.
It's good you do this. I hate it when people sugar coat games
My theory regarding why your character needs a so-called spacesuit:
In the thousands of years to terraform Icarus into Earth mk2, humans, having spent generations in orbiting space stations, must now require a pure oxygen environment to survive.
But all the trailer interviews are taken on earth? There isn't a single thing that doesn't contradict it's self
Well, in pure oxygen atmosphere you'd spontaneously combust. Along with most of your stuff, including normally non-combustible things like metals. Even if it goes up to 50-60% any kind of fire would be virtually unstoppable.
I dont really understand what madman of an engineer though its a good idea to keep generations of ppl in a pure oxygen enviroment. Thats nuts.
I don't see how anyone would prefer this over 'No Man's Sky' or any of the popular classic survival games.
thankyou for your honesty we need this sort of thing.
