  • On April 17, 2007, a group of some of the world’s most renowned musicians and entertainers got together to pay tribute to, and celebrate the life of, their friend, mentor and music industry giant, Ahmet Ertegun. The event took pace at the Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York. Bette Midler served as the hostess that evening. Participants included Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Genesis, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Wynton Marsalis, Ben E. King, David Geffen, Helen Mirren, Kid Rock, Manhattan Transfer, Solomon Burke and Oscar de la Renta, among others.
Ahmet Ertegun was the co-founder and president of Atlantic Records. He discovered and championed many leading rhythm and blues and rock musicians. Ertegun also wrote classic blues and pop songs. Ertegun has been described as "one of the most significant figures in the modern recording industry.”
Phil Collins has spoken about Ahmet many times, citing him as a dear friend and champion of his solo career.
I recently promised a few of our page supporters I’d share Phil’s performance at this event. He does one song by himself (Daryl Stuermer on guitar) and one with Genesis, offering some extremely heartfelt remarks in between. Those remarks you may have seen earlier this week in a video I shared.
I hope you enjoy these two beautiful performances in tribute to someone Phil loved. XO, --Traci
