- Danielle Spencer, pastry chef of Brooklyn’s Win Son Bakery, believes that a 13-inch metal mixing bowl can seriously improve your baking workflow. Danielle extols numerous benefits of this bowl, like its affordable price, its convenient size, and its helpful features like the flat bottom and large surface area. All of these factors (plus more) make Danielle’s case that this bowl helps you work smarter, not harder, in the kitchen.

Easy with the irony here. It's a vid for those who can't afford a stand mixer but only ever see the ytber they watch use a stand mixer. Not everybody has the chance to have learnt cooking when young, and it doesn't come easy to everybody. The vid is simple, educational and it doesn't need to be more, it's here to show ppl you don't need the fancy stuff to start baking.
I'm lucky ppl in my fam cooked and showed me how to. But I used to live to live in 9m² with a common kitchen, I know how to improvise, do with very little ustensils and space, others in my situation didn't or didn't bothered and only ate prepped meals or very simple dishes (rarely healthy ones), I'm glad vids like these are being made, and I only wish more are released in the future.
I know right. No one's saying mixers are useless, people missed the point. I'm sure all the ironic edge lords will jerk off to their own comments tonight.
@@12345678abracadabra I worked in a bunch of kitchens and never saw a Kitchenaid mixer. We had a Hobart, a Robotcoupe and mixing bowls along with the standard SS steamer insert/prep pans. For a YT video, a Kitchenaid is just more interesting to watch. No YTer wants to film themselves cramping up whipping egg whites.
That said, a smaller kitchen doing their own desserts and pastries might invest in a couple Kitchenaids. One for main use and the other when the main one burns out.
Lol, then make a video about how you don't need a stand mixer, not 'this specific bowl is the only bowl you'll ever need.'
First, you aren't using "irony" correctly.
Second, my problem with this video is that it half of it is disingenuous. It pretends like the reason people buy stand mixers is because mixing together dough is too hard a task, when in reality stand mixers are there to save effort and allow you to work on other tasks while it does its job. The video also pretends like a stack of nesting bowls (bowls of various sizes that typically are bundled together) also don't have any place in baking, when in reality this couldn't be further from the truth. Depending on what you are making, they can be quite useful. If you need to mix together a small portion of something, a smaller bowl will be a lot easier to handle and manipulate then a 13 inch wide bowl. Also, you'll sometimes want to have a bowl with higher edges so ingredients don't spill out as you mix them together. Lastly, if you need to chill a dough in the refrigerator, a smaller and not as wide bowl is much better as it takes up less space than a bowl that could take up an entire shelf on its own.
P.S. I just saw that the description says that she believes that this mixing bowl can (and I quote) "improve your baking workflow". Yeah no, this isn't going to help your workflow i.e. increase the amount of doughs you can put out in a given amount is time. I highly doubt Danielle over here can outpace a machine designed specifically for it.
@@jinxed7915 Relax, I think you're taking this video too literally. The audience for this video is lazy youtube viewers. People like me who tried baking but got discouraged because I didn't want to invest in a stand mixer and didn't know proper efficient technique. Also, possibly for those in a kitchen environment where the stand mixer went down or there isn't one available. Obviously it's not to convince those who already own a stand mixer, and definitely not advice for those running bakeries lol...
This lady is so freaking good at explaining her actions. Like I think I could understand what she’s doing just based on her instructions without actually watching the video
I agree this title is overstating the content, but as someone who bakes almost every week and is still saving up for a stand mixer, these are solid tips that I greatly appreciate!!
This is actually very helpful for beginners like me. I don’t understand the hate. This bowl is fr more ergonomic than the narrow ones. And it’s easier to knead them there too without having to transfer them onto a counter. (Saves u time cleaning. Lol) I’ve tried using both, although not metal since I just use whatever I have in the kitchen, and have used those techniques naturally (u just start noticing the convenience of a wider bowl without rly thinking abt it). And based on experience & AFAIK, she’s speaking the truth. All she’s doing is showing us to work efficiently IF we’re too broke to buy the expensive stuff and IF we want to. What’s with the hate? 🤔
me neither! thought it was super practical
Disagreeing with someone is not hate.
Most restaurants have limited space in the kitchen. At the place I worked, we had the small Hobart mixer on the floor perched on a small stand and everything else was done by hand. If you needed a large quantity of anything, you used the mixer. If you were making a batch of mayonnaise (about 1 qt or litre), you did it by hand because the cleaning and down time for the mixer wasn't worth it. For a home cook/baker, processing and clean up time is kinda unlimited.
And you learned to get fast at things like mixing batter and whipping cream. And cleaning a SS bowl took no time at all and is lighter than a pyrex bowl. I think YT and TV cooking shows mainly use pyrex because it looks better on camera. I think we had about a dozen Vollrath metal bowls in S/M/L that got used multiple times a day.
That is literally how every household makes dough in india😂
I use these bowls all the time because I don’t have a stand mixer
I've watched about three dozen videos in prep to help me before my first bread ever. There was something very gentle and straightforward about this, and gives me the courage to finally make my first loaf.THANK YOU!
Take a damp towel, twist it and make it into a circle. Place bowl inside and it won’t spin ;)
First thought at the beginning was "ok sure for bread it's actually enjoyable to get hands on with the dough, but there is no way in hell I'm gonna hand cream butter/sugar ever again" ... then she does it quite well in 4 minutes utilizing the shape of the bowl and good technique. Wish I had this knowledge when I initially got into baking and gave up pretty quickly because it took too much time by hand. Now I got a stand mixer on the way....
Oh no not the horrors of owning a stand mixer. Anti stand mixer people are morons.
Ive been a baker by trade for 17 years. Bowls are great, but nothing beats a working mixer and a spacious bakers bench.
Of course, if you're a baker! But if you're a douchebag who wants to invest 600$ in a stand mixer saying you'll ultimatley save money by baking your own bread only to get lazy after two weeks and end up using your freakishly expensive stand mixer only twice a year, maybe you should go for the bowl...
@@keras_ I think he's speaking from experience lol.
Or maybe im just not that angry...
@@OlivierBL you can buy a blender with a dough hook/bowl attachment... they are like 220 bucks it's more practical to use that than a traditional stand mixer unless you use them all the time.
A lot of people can’t afford it though
Her: making unbelievable professional recipes by hand with the bowl.
Me: grabbing another handful of popcorn from the bowl.
Amazing! Really informative on how to think about my tools for baking. This is the kind of basics you’d only get working at a bakery.
Mixing bowls are pretty versatile and cheap! Thanks for reminding us ☺️
Yeah, I wonder about bakers/cooks that think, "If only I had that expensive piece of kit, then I could make something delicious. That is what's stopping me."
I used to pick up the bread order for my work on my way in. They had a sheeter and specialty machines for shaping specific buns and rolls. But they did a lot of volume for a small family owned bakery. Unless you are willing to place your stand mixer on the counter and use it all of the time, I don't see the need. If it is mostly in a cupboard, having to drag it out for the times you use it is a pain and will probably convince you that going out and buying decent bread is easier.
She should be the marketing director for this bowl's manufacturer lol
Thank you for the inspiration for baking with minimal equiment
yeah im down to using the sun now for my baking
Have you heard the good news about *bowls!?*
You really want to keep them *a-round!*
Dad, is that you?
😂
If you don't cook often. The bowl is enough.
If you cook a lot, a bowl like this, and some in other sizes, are great. This is probably an 8 quart bowl, but they can be had in variety of sizes, at least from 1 o1.5 quarts, all the way up to 30 quarts. The more shallow design, a bit reminiscent of a wok shape, is great for tossing and mixing efficiently and effectively. Working with a big, wide, and spacious bowl feels great, in the same way that using a large cutting board can be so much more pleasant than a tiny one. But this doesn’t mean that a stand mixer its useless, only that they both have their place.
A baker's savior is a stand mixer... way easier and more time efficient. No chance one bowl can replace a stand mixer or a set of multiple bowls. Maybe if you want to work five times as hard and take five times the time...
Agreed
But it's not "artisanal" or "authentic" duh XD
I think the idea is that you don't need expensive equipment to bake, make dough, etc
@@henrik640 Ya I get you technically don't need that other stuff to make dough but if you are doing it often enough it makes it a lot better and also what if you are making a recipe that requires more than one bowl? She herself used a second bowl in the beginning of the video to add dry ingredients.
I'm a baker with no room for a stand mixer 😭
It takes a lot of elbow grease but this is also how I do it... you get to work with your senses and the batter /dough more attentively.
I receive one of these as a gift, I love my giant Bowl. I also have a standing mixer. I rarely use it now. The bowl is my buddy!
Also for baking newbies. Get a scale. I put it off for a long time and was kicking myself when I saw how easy it made my life. Bye measuring cups
Thanks so much for this great tip. Saturday, I dragged out my stand mixer from a closet, what a pain! Made pizza dough, cookies & pound cake. Now, I'll buy some bowls. It's good to get your hands in the dough. 💯
This is a good video. I don't understand why it's getting so much hate.
I have a stand mixer, hand mixer and huge bowls (metal and glass). If you don't have an extra bowl for your stand mixer and you need two separate whipped things the large metal bowl will surely save you.
What is the brand for that mixing bowl? I am unable to find it online. Thank you
straight to amazon for the bowl
I really love this video! My stand mixer broke and until watching this, I was avoiding "real" baking. Thank you for sharing.
people always expect some extraordinary and mind-blowing tips that like you almost can't make simple video anymore
I mean come on, the only tip she gave was rotating the bowl. It's the only thing that you may not think about on your own working with this type of bowl. I was expecting 2 or 3 tips to make the video worth a watch. How about "They are made to be stackable on top of one another" or "put it on a wet towel to avoid it moving around; some of them have a built-in silicon bottom for that same purpose" or a discussion on different bowl materials like "glass nice for presentation and scratch resistance, metal is nice for lightweigtht and price, ceramic is nice for presentation and oven baking". I don't know it took me 10s to think of the plan for an interesting video with some content beyond "it's a bowl you can use it to mix ingredients. You wouldn't be able to do that directly on a table".
@@lwouisYT fair point. i think that's where the substance of the title getting 'stretched'
This comment section... smh, haha. The title is a bit much, but this is actually really solid advice for a beginner or someone who might be interested in baking something, but doesn't want to over-commit by buying expensive tools. Thanks.
But if you are cooking/baking a lot, a kitchen helper is a real saviour.
I'm working full time, have a kid and still need the time to cook from scratch as I hate to buy processed food.
The video would be better without the stupid click bait title
@@SongJiangShiJin Agreed, these kinds of bowls should be in any serious cooks inventory, as they really are great, but it isn’t an either or situation. They are also great for tossing stuff, salads wings, whatever. Few things are as annoying as having to carefully insert mixing utensils (be they salad forks, spatulas, or your own hands) between the edge of a tiny bowl filled to the brim, and its contents, in order mix them up, and still having shit spill over the edge. A good bowl for tossing and mixing by hand should fit all the contents in its center, with plenty of space left up the sides to move things around.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO. She is exactly right, if you bake a lot these big bowls will save yout life and they are actually very easy to clean
These bowls are crazy versatile. My family uses them all the time for washing veggies, making kimchi, marinating etc
I own such a bowl & it's really & absolutely useful.
When I made my first whole wheat bread, I used a bowl since I didn't have a big enough space to knead a dough. 😂
Scene: You only need one bowl, not a nesting set
Next scene: *uses three nesting set bowls*
Only batter what I do with my hands is the Pinello´s pizza batter, what I learned from this channel.

Man, I have one of these bowls under my sink. I don't have a stand-mixer, and I hand-mix dough often enough that I'm gonna have to break this one out next time.
Grandma's bowl! Master baker! This is so good💓
I have three stainless steel bowls of different sizes. I use them everyday, I bought them all at goodwill. 👍👍
Need a Costco membership if you’re spending $600 on a stand mixer...
Nothing beats a mixer
It’s not intimidating, my carpel tunnel keeps me from solely using a bowl and whisk. A stand mixer is a necessity for me if I want to enjoy baking.
Thanks, this is beautiful and helpful for those who are beginners, please post bread recipes. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for this!

Excellent bowl review
Lmfao. Yea alright. My life wasn't changed for the better as soon as I brought my kitchen stand mixer. Please
This lady should sell this bowl. Lol
Thank you!
Love this! Thanks!
I love my stainless bowls and I love my obnoxious big ass stand mixer as well. Both serve their purpose in my kitchen and both are used like an over worked horse.
I know a few people who purchase a stand mixer and who only use it during the holiday's and then the 10 months it is just a display on this kitchen counter or thrown into closet. These people I don't understand, but it's their money and they are doing themselves a disservice by not using this wonderful equipment to it's full potential.
If it makes them happy to spend their money on something pretty for their kitchen then why shouldn't they?
Wish we could have seen the finished loaf!
Does anyone have a link to a great example of this 13-inch bowl (maybe Amazon)?

So I love the video and the presenter, but I can’t find a 13” bowl on the internet anywhere, even Amazon. 13 quart yes. 13” no. Send a link! Where can I get it!
You have to look at the features or specifications not that it's a 13 qt bowl.

Gotta defend all the hundreds of dollars they wasted I guess lul
How do you deal with the horrible work environment? What do chefs do when pans are thrown at their heads?
Just be holding the biggest knife
You should probably duck bro, I don't think you want to get hit with a pan to the head. After that get a job in a less toxic environment.
where can i get one for $4? they don't seem to be that cheap

She looks like she fronts a hardcore band
But... You used a nested set in the video! The medium bowl held your proofing dough and the small bowl held your initial butter/sugar mix while you whipped the egg whites...
HOLY SHIT WHAT AN INVENTION 🤯🤯🤯
That was one of the more helpful hints. Excellent!
No link for the bowl? Lol
its a bowl.
A big ole bowl- yup, highly underrated!
I can salt my cabbage for kimchi in these- or use to mix up my dressing for thanksgiving or to load up my veggies and fruits after shopping to give them a bath.
Good suggestion.
I dunno.. it looks like standard stainless bowl I have at home...😂 i think this is a tutorial how to whisk and fold the mixture
There was definitely a bit to much hype about this replacing a stand mixer, and not enough emphasis on the specific shape of this bowl vs. many other superficially similar mixing bowls. Most mixing bowls you see are too deep and narrow. She should have skipped the hyperbole about stand mixers and just shown a side by side shutoff this bowl shape next one hat you want to avoid. The advantage of this lies in how expansive it is, and how roomy it feels.
Stand mixers do save a bunch of time and energy. But hey, if you want to do it all by hand, that's great too. Just think you could be using your time for something else.
Stand mixers also cost $400 a pop. This bowl is probably like $10 lol
