I have an adult with Down syndrome love your songs
This makes me think of my mom and dad. Mom had a long battle with ovarian cancer when I was a kid, but she never lost her faith in God. I'm sure Dad spent many day with Mom in the hospital.

But why should I thank Jesus for cancer??!
I hope the writers of the song can answer you but my point of view of the song is more thanking Jesus not only the peace that can be felt through the battle as we pray and lean on Him, but also Thanking Him that after the battle is over on this side, that because of Jesus's death on the Cross that we can spend Eternity with Him and do so cancer free with no pain no illness no sadness. That's my take.
