Does a JDM Subaru Impreza STi NEED tuning ?

  • Lots of discussions around whether your JDM import Subaru Impreza STi actually needs mapping for UK fuel. Lots of uninformed opinions really, so I shine a light on it with one freshly imported Impreza Hawkeye STi
    Japanese fuel is better quality than UK fuel and Imprezas need the best quality fuel.. So is the std map safe? Does it actually need to be mapped to run uk fuel safely?
    Enjoy ... Lots more videos coming.

    Absolutely no expert on Scoobs, but have been around a few for around getting on 15 years now and have never heard talk of greys 'maybe' 😉 needing remapping for UK fuel.

      This was full on JDM market car, not a grey import such as Cyprus or Malta. Very different ignition maps on the jdm because of the super quality of fuel there

    My '97 wrx has never been mapped for UK fuel.. the previous owner (only UK owner before me) managed about 120k on the standard engine before it eventually started knocking and needed a full rebuild... Still didn't get it mapped afterwards and then I've bought it... and 6 years later I've still not got it mapped either 😂🙈 but its not driven much, or hard, should really book it in as got a ESL previously mapped by yourself waiting to go on 🙈

      Some are lucky.. Some aren't but knowing and giving a chance to fix before problems is a good thing. The earlier cars are less on the edge than newage onwards tbh. Happy to help out and check it out with you and fit/map the Esl. Thanks for the comment 🙏

      @@racedynamix will definitely need to book it in with you but still trying to figure out a bit of a throttle issue. Feels like it's on a switch below 1000rpm so makes plodding along in traffic a bit jumpy. Tried cleaning and swapping idle control valve to no avail. Unless that won't make a difference to mapping but didn't want to risk booking in and you finding something stupid resulting in you not being able to work your magic.

    As someone who has a Hawkeye WRX STI coming on the boat from Japan as we speak, this is really useful.
    I'm having the importer take it to be mapped for UK fuel for peace of mind. What sort of power would you expect to see out of a 2006 JDM wrx sti with an STI panel filter, aftermarket backbox, and uprated fuel pump?
    At this stage is there any power benefit to throwing an uprated fuel pump on? Or will there be a bottleneck from the standard exhaust setup? Down the road i'd like to go turbo back exhaust and some other mods, so it's obviously going to be needed as a future supporting mod...but figure there's no harm in throwing these bits on for the initial UK fuel map and running the car like that whilst my wallet recovers.
    Great vid!

    • @racedynamix
      @racedynamix  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching.. And the comment/question.. It will probably make similar (maybe a tad more because of the back box) if optimised for UK fuel but most often the importer will have a mapper take some ignition timing out and call it mapped for UK fuel even without actually testing it.
      If it were my car I would replace the fuel pump, they are 16 yrs old now and very critical so the 70 pounds would be well spent.
      Who is the importer?

    • @racedynamix

      It may help hold onto a bit more boost at the top end which might gain a couple of bhp but wouldn't be needed for boost control, the std 2 port does a good job on the jdm

    If low octanefuel is used such as 95RON, would the knock sensor read the knock and make ecu to retard the ignition timing? In my country we do not have premium unleaded, but heaps of guys are getting jdm imports and running on local pump gas rated at 95RON. Haven't heard of any issues yet.

    • @racedynamix
      @racedynamix  11 місяців тому +1

      @@ponchcrew1076 the Bp5 has a very high compression compared to other subaru engines. Tuning for 95 Ron is tricky but not impossible.. The issue is that removing the ignition timing needed to make safe on 95 can make it a little hesitant. The best cure for that is some thicker head gaskets to lower the compression and retune to add some ignition timing back in 👍
