I love his spoken word. It's so intense but because it's not Damaged or My War, people are quick to dismiss it. If anything, Rollins and Ginn's interest in exploring different aspects of confrontational art completely made sense with the ethos of Black Flag. They were just as much an art band as they were a hardcore band. Also, on a lighter note, I've always imagined what it'd be like if Rollins recited his poetry during story time with kids at a pre-school.
In case any of you haven't read his classic journal-based book, 'Get in the Van,' the titular antagonist in this piece was a real person Henry lived near back during his formative years with Black Flag. At one point in the book, he talks about how they had this ongoing 'cold war' of sorts and how he had spit on the back window of Family Man's new station wagon quite regularly (LMAO). Of couse, Henry also went on to profess his strong disliking of such other 1980s Americana stuff as Bruce Springsteen and even 7-11 (LMFAO). You have to remember, though, that Henry was in his early to mid 20s when he wrote that book, as he's actually mellowed out a little bit since then. All in all, highly recommended summer reading material. I finished it within 3 days of a 9-day cruise to New England and Maritime Canada a little over 2 weeks ago...
It's done artistically but Henry is ramping up his 'Charles Manson' glare and bitter ironic tone a bit too much, but I guess that was part of his style at the time.
When you are poor as hell, living in a shed, sweating and bleeding for people while you shed yourself travelling most of the year to play to dumb punk kids on top of the weight lifting (which this was near his peak form) I absolutlely get the intensity
the B-side sounded awful to me until the first time I listened to it stoned. made perfect sense from that point on. I've been sober for a few years now but thankfully I still love it.
As a side-related note, the creator of Ren and Stimpy hated his own father, so when you see those patriarchal protective types in certain episodes, yep, his own hatred projected....
I remember in high school drama class we'd do more SNL style skits and loathed monologues. Just felt awkward as hell and I didn't know any decent ones that weren't over the top Shakespearean or melodramatic so I just did family man .
Those were some heavy words until the lights turned up and couldn't stop cracking up of that face or be freaked out with him looking psychotic on the verge of nervous breakdown becoming a serial killer
yes families are smug, i laugh when i hear about daddy losing it and wiping his family out no more callous than the ice cold stares a single person gets from these creatures ha ha ha
He does have dad issues. But I interpreted it as he is resentful towards the atypical "family man" and how these men have to sacrifice certain aspects of their masculinity for the sake of their families and lifestyles... he's essentially calling family men traitors of real men. Imo.
+thramagen yeah.... u do have a point.... he was such an arrogant dik during the My War days.... punks didn't like the slow heavy stuff at first and would ask lIlI about "selling out".... he was naturally ticked off.... he does some great interviews with nardwuar
This is kind of like a wrestling promo from the 80's.
+Greedyselfish97 he even looks like an 80s wrestler, it's great lol
Rollins' Flock. That would be great.
Steve williams or Terry Gordy woulda killed him
Ha!! Big words at the weigh-in
@@boscopit The Miracle Violence Connection kills everybody to be fair
I liked the part where he said Family Man
I'm so fucking dead at this comment
I missed that part.
Classic! Henry looks fucking psychotic in this video.
People think this is cringe, but it's better than 99% of so-called "poetry"

Henry be looking like a muscular Charles Manson
How does Henry even keep from crackin up after "You're such a MAN puttin up ur Christmas lights"...idk, gets ME every time
Hes on acid
It's done artistically but Henry is ramping up his 'Charles Manson' glare and bitter ironic tone a bit too much, but I guess that was part of his style at the time.

I judged this album to quick. But then I gave it a listen and its actually incredible
the B-side sounded awful to me until the first time I listened to it stoned. made perfect sense from that point on. I've been sober for a few years now but thankfully I still love it.
this is a big No if your tripping watching this
I wonder how much coffee he had to drink to be able to go 90+ seconds without blinking
Back in the 80s, as a teenager, I thought this was soo damn cutting edge and subversive. Jeezus, were we innocent back then...
Not embarrassing at all. Shit is great. I loved this when I was a teen.
Charles Manson + Jim Morrison
Art in its best form always is emotionally expressive and tears down the existing social order. Henry is brilliant here!
This is classic. I'd bet he's embarrassed by this by now, what, nearly thirty fucking years later
Henry used to look like a cross between Charles Manson and Dave Mustaine.
Henry Rollins looks like Jim Morrison on Steroids.
man henry's hair is super jim morrison in this video
Kurdt Nbk yup, it's so HOT😘
"SAY FAMILY MAN ONE MORE TIME MUTHAFUCKER!!"-
Samuel L.Jackson
Nothin like some good ol patricide before bed.
this is fucking awesome, and you know, still relevant!
I absolutely agree. Black Flag is the perfect voice to the dysfunction that is western society
Stunning poetic expression of anger and hate. It would be a mistake to censor or project one's own issues onto this beautiful work of art.
I listen to this while putting up Christmas lights in November
Same
This was the first introduction to Black Flag/Henry Rollins for me a LONG time ago.
This is how I feel about all my friends who nailed themselves into the all American coffin by getting married, working 9-5s, and having kids

Art intersecting with psychology, Freud would have jizzed his pants for this!
He had a lot of balls ridiculing other punk and hair metal bands at the time for being corny and doing this, I gotta say.
This is hilarious!
Henry really hated his dad.
so it was his dad?
Both of them hated him sadly.
As a side-related note, the creator of Ren and Stimpy hated his own father, so when you see those patriarchal protective types in certain episodes, yep, his own hatred projected....

“First on the block” lol
By "family man" I think he means "family guy." Maybe the future of tv came to him in a dream.
I'm guessing this is why they called him Hank the Crank in high school
This is actually beautiful spoken word
All we need is a WWF logo on the down left haha.
this is hilarious
Those were some heavy words until the lights turned up and couldn't stop cracking up of that face or be freaked out with him looking psychotic on the verge of nervous breakdown becoming a serial killer
This is pretty damn funny. Poor Rollins, he probably cringes every time he watches this.
He's a poet. His spoken words are harsh and true. I don't really find any of it funny. I find it quite serious and rather deep.
we live in a society
Fuck, he looks like that rollerblade-guy from the Warriors with that hair
Take a shot everytime he says family man
Out of all the poems I’ve heard, this is by far the most recent.
Henry is so fucking intense! I love this, it's kind of naive because of his young age but his poetry is still very deep and clever.
He probably laughed at it then too, his delivery in this video seems exaggerated for satire
Rollins with hair is awesome. It has been so long I forgot.
Manson family man
It's cool that the Night Stalker was also the lead singer for black flag
Henry with hair.. Thats trippy.
Brilliant!
hes not blinking!!!!!!!
Nice video
Audition for the villain in COBRA with Sly Stallone.
I'm dead XDDD
Happy Time with Henry
Lighten up, Francis
Henry is amazing. Everything he does is amazing. Henry.
Ya know, unrefined & angry & long-haired Rollins is probably the best kind of Rollins...
Man of family
i thought it was a joke at first but then i saw the look in his eyes - completely serious!
he doesnt blink for almost the entire thing
Family man
Notice he doesn’t blink once during the entire video.
He'd probably laugh at this now.
Looks insane with that long hair.
Really insane!
You ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.
This is Satan's anger towards God's family life. Satan wants to destroy any kind of family life and love.
awesome hair
damn, gotye has gone a dark path
Family MAN!
Intense
OH GOD, DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE HE DIDN'T BLINK AT ALL.
Still silly though.
How does he go damn near 2 minutes without blinking?
DAAAMN SON.
sounds like Swinging Man...
I wanted the swingin man :(
I wanna say how funny this is, but I'm scared Henry would find me and beat the shit out of me.
Damn! dat Rollins or Danzig!?
blink henry!
Now we're talking
I'm sorry, this is hilarious.
he looks like a tougher and scarier Richard Ramirez..
Wow
I used to love this as a teen. Now at 50 I realize how ridiculous it is. He's just trying way to hard to be mean and cool
HO KOGAN!
Best Black Flag album don’t @ me

Isnt Rollin's kind of a family man now?
gogogadgetboomstick nope, no wife, no kids. By choice...
Haha he looks so young
CandyCockroach he was 24 here
Laughing my fuckin' ass off, he looks like Michael Jackson - during the "Bad" era, lol.
more like Morrison on some bad acid. When I was a kid I had this album and a couple circle jerks albums that I played until they broke.
dad issues ?

is this shit for real?
Nice try lol. The real Henry Rollins doesn't have long hair! Better luck next time.
