Dude, Black Flag ranking! Funny how I haven’t seen any of their discography ranked at all. My War would have to be my fav based on Side B alone. Reason being is because Side B and the mixing of The Melvins is what became Sludge Metal. Doom/Stoner/Sludge is one of my top 3 fav genres, after hearing so much about My War and the 2nd side was needed to be heard. Instantly fell in love. Great job on this man 🤘🏻
Hi Chris"" cool list anf looking forward to see your other rankings too..... I know almost nothing about the band and their discography, so thanks for doing this!!! cheers and be well
Killer ranking Chris!! Wow I always thought Damaged was lower on your list and In My Head was higher! My favorite is Slip It In , with My War being my number 2 ! Great job brother 👍🤘🤘
The Rollins years are my era. Saw them on the Slip It In tour, then twice on the Loose Nut tour. One of those nights included the band and crew crashing at our house after a June '85 show (Columbia, SC). I was too into the music at the time to realize how much of a babe Kira was.
@@ChrisPropfeMusicallyObsessed We met Rollins that afternoon at a meet-n-greet at the Record Exchange. That night as Flag ended its set, Henry put out a request to the crowd for a place to crash (crew, support bands, and all). We offered our house, to which they accepted. We helped them break down and load up their gear. As my friends and I waited in their famous van, we watched in amazement as Henry spraypainted an anarchy A on the storefront window of a hardware establishment next door to the club. Henry claimed the store owner refused to let them offload in the store's loading zone earlier that day. We ate with Henry and Kira at an all-night greasy spoon, where our waitress kindly asked Henry to watch his language. Surprisingly, he conceded. We all went back to the house and partied well into the wee morning hours. Best part is, my friends and I had just graduated high school two weeks prior, so this more than made up for all the graduation parties we WEREN'T invited to.
You wild dirty pompous poseurs! I was listening to Black Flag back in the 70's before skateboards were invented - Greg Ginn was just a lanky pale weirdo in his garage playing on his cheap acoustic guitar, figuring out the chuck berry chords to Depression and Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie...It was horrible (he was playing as bad as his guitar playing is NOW when you watch the New Black Flag chasing jellybeans and pennies with little sad tours... so old man, stiff finger, turkey neck Ginn won't be homeless) All in all, I must say that Ginn is a legend and all his albums are brilliant in a Antonin Salieri type way - If Salieri was the Patron Saint of Mediocrity, then GINN is the Patron Saint of shi*t!
I saw them live way back in 85 I think it was .. I'm pretty sure it was the slip it in tour. First time we saw Henry Rollins with hair to his shoulders, I can remember him coming out on stage what's a herd of his shoulders and he had gotten a bunch of new tattoos. The crowd kept yelling daddy turned into Ozzy... LoL
Probably seeing the current BF lineup in two days. They’re doing ‘My War’ in its entirety, plus a second set of “hits.” Never saw them back then, but saw Rollins Band 2 or 3 times in the 90s. I would have passed on seeing BF now since it’s Ginn and some other guys. But a few years ago, I saw Gang Of Four with only one original member- Andy Gill - and I really liked it. Fingers crossed 🤞 on Black Flag doing the same thing.
love black flag. its always hard to say which version of the flag is the best, this also accounts for keith/dez/reyes era before rollins. but i love all the albums equally. Gregg Ginn although a bit eccentric but is a awesome guitarist. I think I'll miss "what the..." for the obvious reasons, but the other albums are stone cold classics. I've grown to love their instrumental outputs immersing myself more deeply into their music these days.
SST Rules !! Finally got that Minutemen record.. We know the one ! "My War" No. 1 and "In My Head" 3 "Damaged" 5 "Slip It In #2. "Loose Nut" No. 4 . Good breakdown Chris ! 💥
@@ChrisPropfeMusicallyObsessed I bought the bundle with a 10" and a T Shirt ! At the time, it was the only way for me to get the record.. now I have a 2nd SST repress as well ! ( Different seller ).
I don't think I've seen anyone show What The... before. That artwork really stands out from the Pettibon covers. Great list. I haven't listened to all of them, but I really like Loose Nut, slip it In and Damaged.
The What The... reboot album is particularly interesting for those who had a fondness for the Ron Reyes / Jealous Again lineup of the band, and wondered what they would have sounded like if they had stuck to the hardcore-punk sound. As for the cover art with generic font, do you ever get the feeling that Ginn designed it that way in order to send a message to estranged brother/artist Raymond Pettibon and fans alike?... Family Man sounded really new and different by virtue of its tapping into elements from the more experimental late-’60s / early-to-mid-’70s era. Similar to the Process Of Weeding Out album, it has more in common with The Doors, King Crimson and Frank Zappa than anything that was going on in early-to-mid-’80s rock music.... Loose Nut is their most accessible of the long-plays. It’s a good introduction to the band for those who grew up on mainstream rock and all that so-called ‘metal’ junk of the 1980s.... If you listen carefully, you can hear bits and pieces of early Iron Maiden on certain tracks from Slip It In.... The first four tracks on In My Head sound different (i.e, low, compromised vocals) because they date from a much earlier recording session, back into ’84.... With hindsight, when people talk about (as opposed to ), I think it’s Damaged and side one of My War that they’re subconsciously talking about. I think Black Flag were accidentally inventing a new style of loud and aggressive rock at that time, hence the appropriateness of the shortened ‘hardcore’.... The doomy, classic heavy-metal sound of My War’s flipside was inspired by Saint Vitus, whom the Flag were touring with, and who had already recorded their debut on SST in ’82-which, like My War and so many other releases on the label, got held back until ’84 owing to all the legal difficulties.... The ’82 Demos bootleg probably deserves some attention and consideration, too....
Black Flag was my favorite band growing up as a teenager. I stopped listening to them but I feel so nostalgic about Black Flag. Now that I have a turntable, I think I’ll go collect them because My War sounded so awful on Apple Music 😅
@Chris Propfe Musically Obsessed I'm more familiar with Rollins as an actor than a vocalist. This is my first introduction to black flag. Better late than never is the saying, I believe.
I don’t like the last album at all. When I heard Ron was singing I got excited. My friend got it when it first came out. I didn’t like one song. It’s such a shame lol
So glad you talked about I Love You, that’s one of my favorites too and it’s so underrated!
Great song!
Saw them on the Loose Nut tour. That will always be my favorite Black Flag album. Damaged a close 2nd. Great video Chris!
Thanks for watching! Loose Nut rules!
Everything Went Black & The First Four Years are my favorites. I know they’re compilations but I love them
They are killer compilations!
For me damaged is my favorite Black flag.. fantastic video Chris
Thanks, Rod! The albums are so hard to rank. I love them all!
One thing that dig about your posts, Chris. Gets me to pull some cds out that haven't listened to in a grip of time. Thanks bud.
Thanks, Brian! I hope you enjoy spinning some BF!
Thanks for the ranking! I don't own any Black Flag yet. Now I have a guide what to look for first. 👍
Yessss!!!! Any of these albums are killer!!!
Glad you did this. I know nothing about them. Now I know where to go first ha. Thanks!
Thanks, Jason! Enjoy exploring!!!

I need to listen to more of The Melvins. Have you ever listened to Saint Vitus???

Yesss!!! My ranking of the EPs will be coming in the next couple of weeks at some point!!!
Killer ranking Chris!! Wow I always thought Damaged was lower on your list and In My Head was higher! My favorite is Slip It In , with My War being my number 2 ! Great job brother 👍🤘🤘
Thank you, Aaron. My list changes from time to time. I can’t deny the importance of Damaged and In My Head is definitely one of my favorites!!!
Cool man. I was wondering if you would include the EP’s
Figured I’d do a separate video!

Awesome ranking Chris! I thought Loose Nut might be higher but it’s a great list!
So hard to rank!!!! Loose Nut rules!!!
In My Head is my favorite Black Flag album, a great mix of jazz and hardcore...really all over the place in the best way. Their best songwriting
It’s such a great album. I agree with all your points!

Aweome listing of th albums, of this beaten dog of a a Band!
I would do ... In my Head, My War, Slip it in and then Your way!
I love the diversity of music on In My Head!
Awesome man.

One of my favorite bands! Greg and the label were so innovative for the Punk genre!
I need more black flag
Yes you do!!!
Fantastic Chris, Black Flag is also one my favourite bands ever, I would only switch Damaged with My War
Both killer records!!!!!
The best one is Loose Nut. They went metal 🤘🏼 but still kept a very original sound and approach
Love that album!

I wish Greg would have used different artwork for What The because the music isn’t too bad…just bloated!

I love reading your thoughts on these albums. So true! I agree…Black Flag was developing their own style of music around this time.
Black Flag was my favorite band growing up as a teenager.

I’m so happy to have the BF albums on vinyl!
I bought Waisted Again for 3 bucks at a thrift store. Where does that sit in your list?
It’s a great album…but it’s a compilation 🤟🏻🤟🏻

I did a video like this. People responded in a very funny way.
Cool!!!!! I’ll check it out!!!!

#1 has to be the Dez version of Damaged, sorry Henry #notmysinger.
Dez rules!
