Tamiya Super Avante Chassis Build - Thanks to the RC ELF

  • First of all, a special thanks to the RC ELF for donating this kit to the channel!
In this video I go over the steps I took to build the chassis for the Tamiya Super Avante. The TD4 chassis does seem quite good and it was a great build. I did change a couple of things though, such as the servo location and changed the battery to a shorty pack which will run across the chassis instead of front to back. Enjoy!
    Thanks for watching.

Hey, Mick, that was a couple nice modifications! Yeah, I have been thinking why people wouldn't just use a smaller battery on this chassis rather than being dictated by Tamiya how to have the layout, and need to dismount those shocks each time. Your solution looks great! For Tamiya, the punishment's due, you know, the Megadeth reference, I had to put it in there somehow...

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  2 роки тому

G'day Mads, thanks mate! Yeah it really makes me wonder why they did that with the battery. I guess it pays homage to the original Avante with the battery running front to back up the chassis... and as it's battery was also a pain to change! 🤣

I've been trying very hard to not watch this Mick. They say it's a great buggy but nobody likes the body. Great tips on the build mate. Just got 2 TFL geared outboards for a big half cabin hull I'm building. Now 2 120 amp seakings and it's nearly a grand already. Dam rcs but should look and go great. I've had a huge interest in the super Avante but the body shell. Can't wait to see what you do , for sure it will look good as usual.

Wow that half cabin is gonna be a beast! I've not seen many RC outboards since the old Kyosho Johnson I had when I was a lad, they will look awesome. Still thinking of what to do with this body, got a few ideas but nothing really jumping out at me yet. We'll see what happens I guess. 👍

Was drunk last night and found an old Aquacraft super v27 and accidentally bought it. Another rc I didn't need but what the hell. Then I wake up and the wife makes a confession, she got the Losi mud slinger, uL19 and a recoil 2. So I accidentally bought a little recoil 17. All great ideas Mick. And yes ditch the wheels. Even when the body is unpainted, the wheels are like connective tissue to that rolling can of WD-40 livery Tamiya put on it. They really ruined the Advante forcing peoples hand to paint the body to the colour of the wheels. And the Advante body is really unique and interesting. I wouldn't cut into the canopy though. As for the wheels, not sure if Optima wheels would fit, and if the Tamiya tires would wrap around them. Maybe hit the body with some metallic red, pearl white, black or gun metal. Im sure youll figure it out though. Thanks for sharing the process.

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  2 роки тому

Thanks Jacen! Oh yeah, the wheels are going for sure. I don't plan on using any fluro colours on it, so unless I dye them black (unlikely) they're going. Great suggestions there mate. I had thought of candy red, maybe metallic too. I've had a bunch of different ideas along the way, no winners yet though. There is one idea I have but I'm really not sure, it's way out there! 😬
Yeah, I'll work something out. Hopefully it won't be too disgusting 😂

    Battery idea is nuts! 👊.
Sounds like the role cage idea is going look awesome Mick👌.
I never knew balls could be so small until you picked them up by your new screw shaft and showed them to us😳
I like your idea of putting a blob of grease on the table to stop your balls rolling all over the place, nothing much more annoying than the balls escaping especially if you have visitors or something, my Mrs goes off when that happens 😠, people scatter when they get away 🤣.
Check out the shocks!, even their box looks top class mate👌
No expense spared on this build mate, what a classy Super Avante build🥇.
Love the full custom steering and battery set-up! Definitely one of a kind.
Imagine that beast with a set of foamies and lowered on the bitumen or something, my brains going a gazillion mile and hour wondering what your going to do with it.

Thanks mate! I'm still not sure about the roll bar or cage. It's giving me a headache trying to figure out which direction I'll go with this one.
Oh yeah, those are some really small balls! 😂
Hahaha, well now you don't have to worry about your balls escaping. Although the grease might make them kind of uncomfortable! 🤣
Those shock do look pretty sweet. I think I got shafted on the shocks though. While the box looks nice, everything was just stuffed in there. Everyone else's Aeration shocks are nicely displayed in the window of the box. Shafted, I say! 😭😂
Thanks mate, I kinda had to do that with the steering and battery. No way was I gonna be pulling the front end up all the time, and the clips and screws. If I'd left it stock, the car would only be used as an ornament... well it prolly will be anyway, but more so! 😂
Hmm, set up for road use would look sick! 😍

I hope you go with the roll bar idea, it'd be something different all right, I think that kits got a tonne of potential in the right hands.
The greasy balls might be a bit uncomfortable but better that than getting In trouble with my better half everytime they escape 😂. Oh that's a bit rough mate!, Imagine if the nice shock bodies got scratched up!!, you'd be well and truly shafted. They look awesome on the buggy👌.
The steering and battery job is outstanding mate, typical of your builds👌, I bet we'll see others doing the same thing now, it's not surprising Tamiya didn't think of it.
Either way, on road or off road it's already a sensational build Mick, congrats on some nice engineering mate👌🦘🇦🇺

Luckily the shocks were all still good. Just didn't look to classy looking through the box window. They must have known I was buying that set. 😂
Thanks mate. I kinda think Tamiya had thought of these things but figured they'd leave it up to us to play with... OR, maybe I've totally ruined the weight distribution. We'll see I spoze! 😂

G'day mate. No worries at all! Yeah sorry for the lack of usual content. There a number of reasons (or excuses 🤣), I had a flu for a couple of weeks and started a new job. Then had a fall at that job and injured my coccyx bone, so I was in super slow motion for a while 😂. On the other hand, I've been in two minds as to continue with the channel or not as it's just not getting enough views. EG: This video is two weeks old and only 740 views, which is pretty bad for a 5 year old channel. So I figured the short videos may help bring traffic to the channel, and they're about all I could manage recently. I'm not sure what the future holds but I do know I need to get this Super Avante finished, so that video will be coming very soon at least! 🙂👍

Great video! Could you share a few more details about the servo move?
Was there a reason you didn't you use your alloy hop up servo mounts when you mounted the servo to the right side?
What drill bit did you use to make the counter sink divots on the under side?
    Thank you!

      Thanks mate, no probs!
I didn't use the Tamiya alloy servo mounts for a couple of reasons.
1: They're only mounted with one screw to the chassis and the chassis has a lot of flex. You might have seen in other peoples videos that the alloy servo mount doesn't actually stop the servo from moving back and forth when in operation, it's really more of an ornament than an upgrade! 😂. So for this reason I used different mounts so I can have four mounting screws and help prevent any movement.
2: these mounts have much less of a gap under the servo, the servo is essentially sitting right on the chassis, which also helps prevent movement.
3: I didn't want to use offset mounts as I wanted to keep the area beside the servo clear for electrics.
As for the countersinking, you're really better off to buy a counter sink. They way I did it is pretty rough. But anyway, I used (I think) a 10mm drill bit. Keep in mind you don't want to run the bit in your drill as it will likely just rip straight through the chassis. You're best to either just use the drill bit with your hands, or you can put in it the drill and just turn the drill chuck by hand.
      Hope this helps! 👍

@@RCHobbyShed Thank you for this helpful information! That makes sense to me as an alternative to the factory setup. I wonder why they didn’t use this layout instead of the cross over steering design.
Instead of countersinking could you use a washer on the underside and let the four screw heads of the screws going into the mounts bump out a little?

@@fantasticplasticadventures Haha I dunno why they didn't do this. Maybe Tamiya just wanted to be "different" lol.
I guess you could do it that way but the buggy won't be nice and smooth underneath anymore 🤔.
BTW, you just reminded me to buy some smaller countersinks. 😁

Hi again! How did you make your connecting rod from the steering servo? Was there a similar length rod from another kit?
      Thank you!

Literally wearing the same shirt! Yeah im not a fan of this kit really. Hoping Tamiya make some effort on the Black Egress - they need to up their game in regards to keeping the customer happy. In saying that - its nice to be gifted a kit from the Elf in anycase

Haha nice! 😁 Yeah this is one I really only got as kind of a challenge for myself. The original Avante really made me say "wow" but this one doesn't, more of a "meh". So I figured I'd get it and see if I can give it that wow factor. We shall see I guess! 😬
Oh yeah, it was awesome to get such a gift. The RC ELF is one awesome guy! 👍
