I think Pakistani airforce dominated Indian air force in each war except for 1971. That too because west Pakistan was 2600+ km away from east Pakistan and Pakistan had to lose that war.
The distance between two wings wasn't the only reason. Western sanctions on Pakistan post 1965 war was another. Pakistan didn't use its air force in 1999 for the same reason.
Buying Western millitary equipment gives you a qualitative edge but it comes with an array of dos and don'ts.
As per Australian media in 1971, Pakistan air force lost 34 aircrafts, while Indian air force lost 102.

On Pakistan Air Force, it may be noted that not only did they have a good kill ratio on Indian Air Force in 1965 and 1971 despite being smaller but their pilots shot down Israeli Air Force fighters while being deputed to Jordan and Syrian Air forces. They also shot down several Soviet and Russian fighters during the Afghan War claiming only those that fell within Pakistani boundary. They also dominated IAF in post Balakot during what they called Operation Swift Retort!
On Chinse Air Force, the breakneck speed of their technological and now conceptual innovation is awe-inspiring! They are on a whole different level now with 250+ Fifth Gen J20s and upcoming carrier based J35 being readied. Breakthroughs in high powered engine and AESA radar technologies and a plethora of multi-domain weapons besides the dedicated EW platforms and multitudes of countless drones! Everyone including USAF was in awe of their PL15 long range air to air missile till a more potent humongous missile dubbed PL17 by some was recently shown in a J16! Its a peril to underestimate them!
China is stealing technology from other countries not developing it. They use spies to cop blueprints from other countries. Commercial and Military equipment both.
Offcourse Indian Airforce is nothing infront of Pakistan Airforce and Chinese Airforce until Retire all Jets am Get Rafale And F35 to counter them....Russian Jets are too Inferior

A recent Chinese report states that after making significant improvements to it's jet engine, they've begun production of the J20 fighter jet, capable of producing 200 J20 's per yr.
Who's gonna fly those 200 jets per year ? 😂 It takes time to train pilots .

The most dangerous situation for India is a war on 2 fronts but what’s worse would be the fact that PAF PLAF have synchronised their respective airforces, that’s never been done before.
ndian Govt is not at all worried about China and Pakistan. Pakistan has to beg India for water. We can get fighter planes and other military equipment if we pay money. But water will not get. If Pakistan is getting ready for war, India is ready to stop river water flowing towards Pakistan. These are all outdated issues for the present Govt.
Its funny he said that Indian lost more aircraft because they flew more planes to Pakistan . What is the point of sending more aircraft to your enemy and get them target practising. I think Pakistan dominance of the air was way more than just shooting down Indian planes. Pakistan also flew more planes to Indian territories and bomb them , left , right and centre . Few years back, the Indian plane was shot down and the wing commander pilot was captured. That all happened not too long ago.

To be frank the indian air forces or air power are still not up to standard as compare with Pakistan and China.
China had already reached world standard in airpower if not surpassing the US.
China produces her own aircrafts and as well purchased advanced Russian aircrafts.
Pakistan has manufactured J17 aircrafts under licence from China. They also have purchased some US fighter jets. So Pakistan is more superior to india in terms of aircrafts.

Pakistan on Feb 29 clearly demonstrated its capacity to respond with systemic strikes on targets of choice in india, it has small integrated groups with integration in comms and complimentary stand off weapons which will hurt india not to say india does not but it’s at par which means India cannot close an objective based mission in pakistan. Pakistans Chinese based systems are integrated across systems and comms and capability in the air. Now pakistan even dies not rely on IS based F16 aircraft and has no restrictions on limits of use and spare part issues to extend an air campaign. Pakistan has intelligence based mission capability it targeted the india air chiefs presence in Feb 29 and deliberately missed the chief as a show of deterence, simply brilliant limited demo.
Not that I'm complaining. Snehashish, when you sit with someone so senior make sure you do not cross the legs if the senior chooses not to. In case you have to make sure your legs face away

As a Pakistani, I have no shame in admitting India has the superior navy. However, Pakistan's Air Force is far superior and not only in terms of jet fighters(even though they play a bg role) but our AWACs and other supporting aircraft are far superior too. On Feb 27, we extensively made use of the electronic warfare.

We have a lot of things to learn from Pakistan in terms of managing its armed forces in small budget and effectively mitigating larger Indian capabilities by having small but efficient and tactically better systems , insted of large procurement cycles and slow upgrade program, . Whatever is top of the shelf , they took as much as their bdget can allow even in small numbers,
If India(Bharat) decides to. spend the same % of its budget on Defence as Pk, U and your high-priced dogs will be out on the streets claiming hunger/homelessaness was reasons to CUT BACK!
Nothing to learn here.. Both have different priorities.. Pakistan as a security state in their paranoia tries to match India in terms of military.. For this they import directly and military dictatorship make it plain and simple.
On the other hand India doesn't have such complex so India emphasize on Transfer of Technology and licensed production to boost our military industrial complex for future scope of Indigenization and self reliance. If u want to learn.. Learn from China how they started from unlicensed copy of Soviet equipment and today surpassing Russia in production of 5th gen jets.

Some of the most accomplished air force pilots in operational roles have been through the process of instructor training and instructor roles. It is one of the best ways of embedding flight principles into junior and mid-level pilots. So, it's no compliment to say that someone has only been in operational squadrons, especially when they are made up of c. 10 aircraft with 35 pilots in a squadron. Not much flying happening there. It's amusing that the Indian Air Force is about to adopt the same(ish) name as the Russian air and space force. Amusing because there's not much evidence that the naming has done Russia any good whatsoever. The most disappointing part of this illuminating discussion was the lack of any mention of combined arms operations - the cornerstone of any defence planning in the West.

I don’t think you have too much understanding of the performance of the Russian AF in the Ukraine war.
By all accounts, they have done quite well with moderate losses, despite the Ukrainians having an array of Western air defense systems as well as legacy Soviet S300s/S200s.

Air marshal explained many things, but there r so many other domains he didn't touch, for example artificial intelegence, data collection, smooth communications, jaming of radars, training/skills of pilots etc. the retailarion of balakote by PAF was really surprise to india, as their DG ISPR said one day before, we will surprise india. The real surprise was that we were red alret still they managed to breach our defence system and jam all our radar system, the bizarre was we shoot down our own MI17 CHOPPER, it was our luck only on machine was in air at that time other wise we would have shoot down all present in air. IAF Ahas to improve

I have witnessed only 1 encounter in which Abhinandan was caught by Pakistanis and our own Helicopter was hit by our own missile.
We should have a new force with more drones and laser power.

Sir, your forgot to mentioned "Second Taiwan Strait Crisis". Where The Chinese got a sidewinder missile and gave it to the Soviet which inreturn K-13.
The BrahMos missile - a nuclear-capable, Indian cruise missile was fired into Pakistan territory on March 9, 2022 prompting authorities to seek answers from New Delhi. Unfortunately India still not satisfied the International community۔ To avoid nuclear war these types of incidents will destroy PEACE.

The Air Marshall says that IAF had a qualitative edge in 1999 during Kargil. He also says that edge was lost during the next 20 years, culminating in the Abhinandan episode. Who is responsible for this? I know files in India move very slowly and our politicians make the final decision, but surely, the IAF has to accept some blame? I assume they were aware of the PAF catching up and slowly superseding them in certain critical capabilities. Why did not any Indian Air Force Chief during 1999 to 2019 take a stand, seek a meeting with the then PM and state what was happening? Why did not any Chief show moral courage and resign to shake the bureaucracy and the cabinet into action? What service did they render by keeping silent and saving their job while the western neighbor with a much lower budget overtook them?

Indian air force lost two planes during Kargil. One Pilot was captured.
In Balakot IAF not only lost a plane, a helicopter was fracticide. Air marshal avoided to address these facts.
Professionals don't gloss over failures. PAF, compared to IAF is a much smaller but a well balanced force.
In 1965, it whipped the IAF, matched it in 1971.
PAF will always retain the defenders advantage because Pakistan doesn't have any impeialist ambitions like India to project power.
42 sanctioned strength is just hollow argument, repeated by many. Add what we have in navy in terms of fighters, P8i there is a second capability that is ignored. Fighters of today are much better than the time when 42 squadrons were contemplated. Two squadrons of Rafale are not equal to two sqadrnas of MiG 21 or Jaguar or any other in the inventory. The unmanned assets that are being inducted, S400 air Defence and Akash systems are a qualitative step up. Tactical missiles like Akash add an edge. We are very good now on the missiles. Add attack helicopters too. The real issue is Indian Air Force is that it has antique museum. We need modern fighters and we have been callous about this for decades. 26 more Rafale for navy, a large batch of them in the stalled mother of orders procurement will make another qualitative step. After that our own success in the 5 th and 6th generation fighters is the only way to be free to take care of our national interest. Restructure through Theatre commands will be the next step in the right direction by uniting our resources. We are in the right direction, just need to gain speed. Even that is not easy!
Numbers still matter. It's always better to have large numbers.
Stupidest argument ever. Only those with zero understanding will give this. If one Rafale is better than one Mig21.. so is one J10 far better than an F7. PLAAF and PAF have expanded greatly and improved qualitatively. They aren't frozen in time. So 42 is the sanctioned strength. Needed is far greater. But instead we are chasing white elephants like aircraft carriers.
Instead of 126 rafales budgeted and provisioned for in 2013, we spent that Rs.55,000 crores for just 36...
And instead of HAL, in came Anil Ambani...hope he is doing a good job with the offsets😊

When you talk about China inexperience in warfare although with negative connotation, I take this as a positive unintended gesture from you that China was never in war with anybody and have not fired a single shot at foreign adversaries for the past 60 years. The learned Air Marshal's under assessment of PLAAF for lack of ops experience since Korean War and Vietnam Wars is a case of mistaken comfort! That experience was so large scale and intense especially during the Korean War that it exceeds the experience of iAF during all its conflicts by an order of magnitude, and they gave a good account of themselves against the best of US air Force! Chinese total war experience and performance against Japan, US and its Allies and also against India shows its determination and ability to absorb punishment an give back some even when it was inferior in technology and economy! Now its a different beast altogether and in a different league!

I agree. As someone said, quantity has its own quality. Chinese operational squadron outnumber Indian 2:1. In case of war with China, India also has to have operational squadron dedicated to Western front facing Pakistan while China is not facing any such requirement on its Eastern and Northern front. The Taiwanese will never initiate war. So, in case of real war China enjoy 2.5-3: 1 advantage. Then comes quality. Last time IAF enjoyed qualitative advantage over PLAAF was the mid-90's. PLAAF now enjoys both quantitative and qualitative advantage over IAF.
Secondly, PLAAF have more ammunition reserve than India including AAM and SAM and due to its bigger economy can replenish loses quicker.
As for fighter pilot skills, recently the USA have presented their own assessment of PLAAF pilots and operations, and they have said PLAAF is now conducting operations in a way that is structured and "admirable". Note that PLAAF have poached RAAF and RAF pilots as their instructors and now incorporating Western tactic in flying.
The PLAF have also taken steps to bridge the logistics gap since their airports are at higher elevation by ensuring they can fly often and have the numerical advantage to match or exceed whatever IAF brings to the battlefield.
As for battle experience, no one comes close to USAF. Between PLAAF and IAF, IAF have more recent battle experience in Kargil operation, but that was ground operations only without the threat of opposing air force. This experience or any bulk of experience cannot overcome the quantitative and qualitative advantage PLAAF have over IAF.
I think GOI will order some Tejas and Rafale before the General election. The Rafales should have been ordered 8 years back when just 36 were ordered. The Tejas in the form of MK1A have won the confidence of IAF to order in large numbers. Both these will help to replace the vintage Bisons and Jaguars, but the fact remains that in 10 years when these Rafales and Tejas are in service, the Mirages and Mig-29's will have to be retired. The 272 Su-30MKI badly need upgrade now. Things in IAF will get worse before it gets better.
Even our PM knows this reality. So, he does not even name China or make any offensive statement on China.
One more thing - forget PLAAF, even Pakistan leads India in drone warfare. This is concerning.

There is no easy recourse here. There is a steep learning curve for being self reliant and, good or bad, we have now taken this path. The amount of years we wasted since 1957 has come back to haunt us. Had we embarked on the journey of producing aircraft engines by our own selves, retiring the Orpheus ones in the 70s, we would have been significantly ahead by now. But time, money, and kickbacks perhaps thwarted our will. As did keeping HAL underfunded. Hopefully, we can manage our defenses well with what we have and continue moving the needle on developing a solid indegenous engine that meets our needs for a 4th gen aircraft and then learn to create one for stealth.

I was with a tour group en route to Islamabad just as the war broke out in 1972 between Pakistan & India , just as the tour bus was about 50 meters from the Ravi bridge the siren sounded _ everybody alighted the bus & laid low by the side of the bridge . Momentarily , the IAF jet flew across the Ravi bridge right in front of our eyes _ barely 150 metres away & 15 metres above the bridge ( we coulld see the pilot ) & in hot persuit by the PAF jet_ perhaps 5 seconds behind . As the PAF zoomed by , everyone stood up to watch. The IAF jet whose mission was to bomb the RAVI bridge & in order to successfully accomplish the mission the IAF pilot instead of STRAFING OVER the bridge & JUST UNLOAD the TNT even with his EYES CLOSED _ instead he was shot down _ moments later : It happened so swiftly . One could easily discern that the IAF was quite inept . So U are right that PAF is more invested in its Air Force . I witnessed it first hand . . I could still envisio in my mind SOOO VIVIDLY even till today ! !
I am a pakistani and i would feel very proud to take claim but the fact of the matter is that this is anecdotal evidence and it does not say anything. Indian air force is proffesional built upon years of experience and it must be respected.
What would strafing the bridge accomplish? It would still be operational. IAF jet was in enemy territory without backups, air or ground support. Ultimately the result of the war is for everyone to see. Not to mention PAF had latest American jets and had edge over IAF

PAF was handcuffed and ordered to stay down by Bill Clinton puppet Nawaz Shareef in 1999 and IAF enjoyed one sided air ops.

The Balakot incident showed the lack of preparedness of IAF, we need to be more critical of IAF, they are complacent.
IAF has historically never been able to match and always made excuses about equipment quality or lack of equipment. Mig21 was never a bad aircraft. IAF gave it a bad name tbh. IAF lost 105 of them in first 15 years of service where only 3 were lost in 65 war. Similar stats for Mirages, Jaguars, SU and Mig29 as well. IAF needs some overhaul from the grounds up.

Boramae for mainline multirole fighters.
Some F-35 for interim pure stealth fighters.
Some B737 AEW&C Wedgetail aircraft.
There are certainly other options and existing platforms to consider in real life but this is just a theoretical clean sheet force. It also isn’t a comprehensive list by any means. Trainers, fuelers, and many other aircraft would also be required.

Paf has huge dependance on f16's which without a doubt is one of the best fighters around but for how long can they sustain these fighters and keep them competitive at the same time??
Thats why they are trying to either upgrade them or to replace them with other fighter jets like J-10Cs or J-31 which is a possible future induction. PAF understands this that they cannot keep depending on U.S and western technology for too long so thats why they are slowly but gradually moving towards Chinese and Turk technologies. And one of the most important thing which people dont consider is that Pakistan is co-operating with Turk industries in drones and Jet fighter which gives them much very much experience and insight about their advancements.
