Great video! I'm in the market for a new roof. Cant wait for the full test video of all the main good shingles. This will help me pick the right shingle for my roof. Please do a test on underlayment too. They have to many out there and I'm not sure which one is good to buy very confusing. Keep up the great work and thank you for educating us.
I looked at a Malarkey and said- it’s junk, I looked at IKO and Atlas and I said “ cheap crap” My Father-in-Law did GAF and had a hard time getting the Manufacture to warranty. A track builder around here did Certainteed Horizon. They all peeled up. I’m an OC guy! But... watching this has humbled me. I think your the only one with a channel like this. I’m sending your video’s to all my colleagues. Great job!!!
GAF is typically the best when it comes to that in my experience. Was it installed using their method? Storm guard along the eaves, rakes, in valleys? Open valley with valley metal? Etc etc. All of that matters. You need to install x of x of their products to get the best results. I work for a contractor that's old school. We hand drive nails. I haven't nailed OC or Certainteed. In my experience 95%GAF and a random IKO or Tamko
Here in Alberta we were using OC Duration and now we can’t get them anymore. So now we have no choice but to shop local and are now using IKO Dynasty. They are both awesome for wind resistance. Both have there advantages when it comes to installing. IKO are easier to peel apart. The OC have the strip on the front which I prefer for blow through. The OC bundles are smaller and easier to handle. OC has less granular loss. IKO Dynasty colours are really nice.
I tried out IKO and the dynasty.... the granule loss affected our ability to walk 8/12 so bad that we had to use cushions on the entire roof. If they fixed that issue, it would be a different story. I do not care how good their nail strip is if the granule loss continues to affect the installation like that.
But Mike Holmes says that they are over-pressed for extra quality!! When you cut a bundle open and all the stones hitting the gutter sound like a Florida rain storm...
I installed an IKO roof this year. I got on the roof to inspect the work and busted my ass walking the valley. It was so unexpected. What I was told is that they put extra granules in the package called “hitchhikers” to level out the bundles so the shingles don’t get misshaped while they are stacked on the pallet. Either way I’m not really a fan.
I quit installing Iko roofs when I slipped on a 7:12 do to access granules I had a pipe flashing in my hand fell on the pipe flashing and cut my thumb tendon in two I'm surprised they haven't fix this problem
I appreciate your efforts in making these tests but this whole test is predicated on sealant failure happening first. It is also highly variable when you guys have to yank on the shingle as well as the entire nail pulling out with the pull tests. I will also say, in all of my roof inspections I've never seen a nail come out with a blow off if the decking is in good condition.
This is a good comment. We are a roofing company, and we have observed the same thing. First, the sealant needs to fail, and some shingles have better sealant than others. For example, in the past, we have used some GAF shingles and their sealant was extremely good. Second, it also depends on where you put the nails. High nails will decrease the wind-resistance significantly, period. We have used GAF, IKO, Malarkey, BP and CertainTeed shingles in the past six years and 0 wind blow-offs. Some of the shingles have a large nailing zone and others don't, but the end result is the same (for us). This is mostly to do with two things: accurate nailing and we pay attention to the weather. No winter re-roofing, partially because the sealant won't seal properly.
Safe Roofing we’re GAF master elite and have 6 nailed shingles (in the line) since inception. None of my roofs have had blow offs and any failures of architectural shingles I’ve seen is from improper nailing.. Not structural failure from guys ripping shingles off.
Just playing devil’s advocate here. Wouldn’t the sealant failure be more likely to happen when sticking to large granulars, or micro vs sealing on a smooth cloth strip? Isn’t that painting 101
So this test is basically seeing what it takes to blow a shingle off after the sealant fails? Also the nails pulled out of the sheathing not through the shingle?
Is there a way to do these tests once the tar strip has bonded? This is valuable to know for winter installs and for after a tar strip has failed but more important than this test would be to compare how these three products do once the tar strips has bonded. And 80mph gusts come through.
As a former OC employee, product presenter, and the co-creator of this Force Gauge test-I can confirm that this setup/execution is not how the test was intended. After performing this demo (along with 10+ others) in front of 100s of contractors during my tenure, I can already tell you why the numbers are what they are in this video. Additionally, the story and explanation of the test, the true benefits of Duration, and what this test actually illustrates is absent. The important factor to capture is when the INTEGRITY of the nailzone is compromised--this estimates the failure point of the Shingle. The dynasty may be harder to rip off of this board-due to the strip on the back-but I bet you the asphalt nail zone fails under less pressure. The point missing from all of this, is also the most prevalent-OC Duration is the Shingle that was manufactured with a nailgun TRULY in mind. The same cannot be said about the others. While everyone is slowly inching towards this idea--I am still baffled by it. Hit me up on LinkedIn, Dmitry. Great content, as always.
Roofing Insights - a lot can change in short time. In the 3 months since posting that original comment til now (when you replied), look at how much has changed in the world. I am sure a lot has changed since I have parted ways with OC, so I am not going to speak for them. You caught them underprepared and executing a remix of what is a valid test (normally using machines in a laboratory/controlled environment). None of these trade show demos are accurate representations of what a life-cycle of a roof entails--they are parlor tricks--good news: there are a lot of houses that need roofs.....companies should accurately present the company/product/facts and let the homeowners decide.
Hi Dmitry, I just had IKO Dynasty shingles put on my home(20 sq. hip roof). However, they put the Marathon Plus AR 3 tab on hip & ridge. The roofer said for $400 he will change it to the Ultra HP high profile cap. Which he says is less than his cost. I'm mainly worried about wind resistance(live in South Louisiana). Do you think it's worth upgrading? Thanks bud!

they are both Great!!! O.C has nicer colour selection tho. BUT!!! Iko Cambridge shingles are just as good, it depends on who's installing them etc... I live in SK Canada. we have 70KM winds and +35 su shine and we get below 30 weather aswell. and I have zero problems. :) Cheers like I said it depends on who's installing them etc.
Only complaint I have installing dynasty is you have to avoid any cuts that go to the gable side because the mesh often makes a messy look of the gable.
My only question is: will either OC or IKO honor their warranty if the shingle seals are broken but the shingles dont blow off? If yes, then that's awesome but if no then the customer would have a roof warranty void with shingles considered wind damaged on their roof...?
Christian Sanchez owens will. I know of around 10 roofs during Hurricane Harvey where winds were over 110mph and seals broke, the homeowners had OC and they paid 100% . That’s why I stopped using multiple brands
@@texasroofer2204 oc has a technical bulletin saying shingles that have had their seals broken will not re-adhere and are considered wind damaged....good to know you've had success with it though..
Christian Sanchez because shingles won’t. Try insurance or a warranty claim. I’ve roofed all around the southern US and they are consistent. If insurance won’t pay they will.
I have been nailing on shingles since before roof guns were used. The only blow-offs I ever experienced were on a golf course in windy location near the ocean using Elk shingles ( not my choice!) We use CertainTeed shingles and the only issue we've ever had is color related. It happened more than I would like but the rep response immediately and has paid us to remove and replace entire roofs completely, including labor and waste. They make a good product with a good warranty and I have never heard of premature aging, at least not from any of my previous customers. Problem I see with the pull test they are using is how can the force be consistent when it is a human body pulling on that piece of equipment? when did make sense to have a machine that is set to a certain force and then the results would be accurate
Hey Christian - IKO reviews all claims individually based on the information provided to determine proximate cause and that coverage is provided under the terms of the warranty where applicable.
O.K. So, These guys are yanking the shit out of the scale at about a 115 degree angle and the nails are pulling out of the holes on some of the tests. It's like torqueing a bolt. You have to pull nice and steady to get a good reading, and these guys can't do that. Of course the nail will pull through, and yeah, the nail will pull out of the piece of whatever that sheathing is when there's 20 nail holes around the one that you just sank. If you pull 90 degrees to the sheathing surface with a nice graduated pull, and use a fastener that won't pull out of a worn-out piece of plywood, then I think you will be able to get some consistent results. I'm sure O.C.'s quality control doesn't test their shingles like they did at the booth! Thanks a lot for the video, and keep trying to keep everyone honest!

Can you put Peel & Stick over a synthetic felt due to impossible removal of peel & stick on the next 15 year re roof? Concerned about future re roofing.
I certainly Believe they both are The best Shingles. A)It’s true IKO Thicker And The uplift force is strongest But Sucks on Granules Loss. The Strip for Iko is Made of Nylon I have my suspicions that Nylon will decay Faster than the Sinthetic of Owens Corning B)Owens Corning Has better Granule Loss Resistance and The Glue will adhere better to the synthetic Fabric than the Nylon from IKO . The Test Performed was unfair for both good Shingles since they both have Pros And Cons
I was at a trade show last week and the IKO guy was setting up this demo. I asked him why he was practicing tearing off the shingles and he said it only works sometimes so he had to test the batch lol. True Story
Any test involving human interaction can't be trusted. If they want a meaningful test they need to get a machine to do it. Project Farm would come up with a better testing methodology than a person pulling shingles at random angles with a gauge.
Now talk about OC blistering and IKO curling. Both of these brands just playing catch up to GAF sales, the #1 manufacturer of asphalt roofing products.
@@RoofingInsights3.0 Lawyers always go after the big dog. All manufacturers have a lawsuit against them 24/7. That's what lawyers do. GAF has factory system warranties that they honor in full. All other manufacturers copied these system warranties and claim cosmetic damage crap.
@@RoofingInsights3.0 Owens Corning is the Preferred Storm Chasers shingle in Georgia. The taillight warranty is also the preferred warranty among OC installers.
@@RoofingInsights3.0 All others are always playing catch up. GAF was the first to implement "system roofing", with a warranty covering all the parts of the roofing system. The other players poorly followed their example. GAF is the only manufacturer that manufactures every part of their shingle. Atlas, OC, and even IKO purchase parts from others. GAF is not perfect, no asphalt shingle is, but they are good enough to be stocked in every Home Depot and Lowe's in the USA, after OC and CertainTeed failed at both locations.
This is why I ask everyone if they have used the dynasty line when they say iko sucks. I guess GAF isn’t even a competitor and that’s why they won’t enter any of these challenges! 😂
What about push test-- wind, seeing how the nail area is so thin- it is the weak point by design, in error, where the common bond does not extend under the nail zone quite far enough for added strength. I don't want to believe GAF is far into planned obsolescence. The Nail did its job but the shingle ripped as easy as it does. Come on, GAF, Yall can do better. That said... It's amazing what they do, meeting the need, in a complex world of balance.
GAF is garbage there finally improving there nailing area and properly going to charge way over prize. There finally catching up and are going to actually have to warrant there shingles instead of getting away with low nail and high nail.
Yeah but max payout on a IKO warranty is $40sq. That won’t cover dump and tear off. At least OC pays for 100% shingles, accessories, and top dollar for labor.
Hey Texas Roofer - After consultation with our roofing community and to better reflect IKO’s commitment to our homeowners, we have recently updated our Limited Warranty. Some time the installer , does not set air pressure , try different air Pressures, some fracture the shingle , with to much air pressure , some dont drive the nail in deep enought , Tom
Very impressed with the IKO, but not enough to abandon OC. The cement of the higher course bonding to the sure nail strip on the lower course makes it hard to separate among other qualities of the Duration line. Yes, I personally had a lot of issues with shingle not sealing. Another roofer in my area got hosed by them big time, they refused to stand behind the product, the color was a mess and the glue strips were a complete failure.
As someone who used to inspect roofs and eventually went into contracting I can tell you IKO and BP are some of the worst shingles you can buy if you want longevity. I have not seen one single roof come close to their promised warranty claim. It's too bad because IKO is made 2 hours from where I live, I'd like to support them but I cant.
As I said in another response, Massachusetts the CertainTeed rep Don C response to our concerns immediately and has paid for us to replace entire roofs due to color inconsistencies. Regarding IKO, my experience (40 years) is that they are prematurely and have a bad reputation. Regarding second chances, why risk it. What if your customer does their own research and sees the history? I know certain teed in GAF and all the big shots have had issues so maybe that defeats my point. Most customers are busy and don't want to spend their spare time researching and if you have a good reputation they trust your opinion.
This is flawed. How many nails have been pounded into that board throughout the day(s)? A spectator tries to point this out during the video but is cut off. Perhaps a new board was used, but I'm assuming not. Exclude GAF from the title since they were not part of the test.
U can have iko nothing but problems over my experience of 30 years I used gaf on my house and in 5 years not one problem guy next door iko all they do is blow off and hit my house want to know what iko does on Warranty nothing at all it always the roofs fault and that western ny real weather movements not some warm states
It’s kinda funny how the IKO booth doesn’t have the Duration and the OC booth doesn’t have the Dynasty. There too smart for that. Fools the average guy but not the roofers.
Installed iko on my house in 2004 but always had patch and renail till 2015 i finally replaced them with a reputable brand because they were shot, iko is not worth the money but to us roofers they certainly job security , cant believe they sell enough of these trash shingles to stay in business
Don’t waste your money on IKO shingles…they don’t stand behind their product. I hade a roof installed in 2005 and the shingles were falling off the house in 2020. They were just falling apart. Lasted less than 15 years. They are a joke
Malarkey Roofing Products all the way! Only manufacturer to NEVER have been sued and pioneers of modified asphalt and the 3m smog reducing technology. I do like IKO shingles, but OC makes one of the worst shingles on the market.
Barry you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to OC. I've put lots of shingles down in my days and OC is amazing. They adhere to each other almost instantly. They are the best I've ever nailed down and and I've done lots. And I noticed a distinct smell to them. They smell like pitch when handling them which explains a lot why they seal together as quick and well as they do. What is pitch you ask? Pitch is a coal based tar while regular tar which most shingles if not all other shingles are is a oil based tar. I can say this because as a commercial/industrial flat top roofer of 25 years I fixed and tore off a lot of pitch tar roofs and pitch tar is a smell you never forget. Some of these roofs have been on a building for 50 years. Flat top Pitch tar roofs will get a split in them as a normal tar roof will as well over time but the difference is a pitch roof will seal itself when the sun hits it on many occasions where as a normal tar roof will not. The point that I'm making here is if the tar in OC shingles has pitch in not only the seal line that bonds the shingles together but the entire shingle itself then this will make OC one of the best shingles on the market period. With that being said IKO are one of the worst shingles on the market. Quit trying to be an expert buddy! I've probably forgotten more about roofing than most people in the roofing industry know!
Anyone who think owens corning is a top quality shingle is flat wrong. You must not have done enough roofs MALARKEY is king its not about that dumb ass nail strip. OC tons of granular loss and they do not have enough of a lament over bottom mat
making the shingle out last the competition is where our money should go...... in 37 years I've never had a shingle blow off my roof. but two have failed in the longevity department..... If your not ripping the shingle your test is the fail... just saying
They copyed OC design . Come up with your own technology. OKC is acting as if they invented something newl. OKC was hidding when all of their shingles were falling of the roof in the midwesr every time the winds picked up at 45-50 miles per hour.

A)It’s true IKO Thicker And The uplift force is strongest But Sucks on Granules Loss. The Strip for Iko is Made of Nylon I have my suspicions that Nylon will decay Faster than the Sinthetic of Owens Corning
B)Owens Corning Has better Granule Loss Resistance and The Glue will adhere better to the synthetic Fabric than the Nylon from IKO .
The Test Performed was unfair for both good Shingles since they both have Pros And Cons
Blurred out is GAF eh ?
Does this change your mind in best and worst shingles previously mentioned in another video of yours?
Not at all. This is small part of it. We will test all shingles in pull test and 9 other tests and will post full comparison video soon
Roofing Insights Now that will be awesome!
Can’t wait!
The taillight warranty is also the preferred warranty
among OC installers.
@@RoofingInsights3.0 You are truly a russian if you believe oc has even made one good shingle.
you really think so ha? Ask GAF to do head to head comparison with other two. Other two agreed, GAF not .
Which one seals better and has more shingle lap let's see that in your videos your missing huge shingle features
Let’s review them together
This is why I ask everyone if they have used the dynasty line when they say iko sucks. I guess GAF isn’t even a competitor and that’s why they won’t enter any of these challenges! 😂
GAF is competitor but wouldn't compete...
GAF sucks. a long with their money grab Golden pledge haha
GAF......IS A JOKE. DYNASTY AND OC ALL THE WAY 4 ME
IKO sheds granules like crazy. And scuffs in the heat too easily. And it's too expensive.
True on granules but not on price, usually cheaper
Iko puts extra granules in the bundle called hitchhikers that aid in transporting bundles on pallets .that's what I read iko claims
Damn Dmitry, I’ve got the exact same CompanyCam shirt (nearly 3 year user)
love company cam shirts
GAF is garbage there finally improving there nailing area and properly going to charge way over prize. There finally catching up and are going to actually have to warrant there shingles instead of getting away with low nail and high nail.
What do you think about their latest wind warranty?
IKO Dynasty is legit!!
they improved over the years. If they can fix granule loss it would be great
Yeah but max payout on a IKO warranty is $40sq. That won’t cover dump and tear off. At least OC pays for 100% shingles, accessories, and top dollar for labor.
Not anymore
The website said it yesterday

Texas Roofer that warranty is the old warranty. Look at their current warranty.
Hey Texas Roofer - After consultation with our roofing community and to better reflect IKO’s commitment to our homeowners, we have recently updated our Limited Warranty.
You can find more information on these changes at the following link: www.iko.com/na/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/MR1L032_IKOIndustries_Inc_US-1.pdf
Shout out to JR getting a pic with Dmitry👍
Pink Panther all the way!
ProBuilt Construction B/CS TX
Thanks Mattew, how you doing in pandemic? Dmitry
too bad IKO does not stand behind their product
What make you say that? Did you have warranty issues with IKO?
Yes, I personally had a lot of issues with shingle not sealing. Another roofer in my area got hosed by them big time, they refused to stand behind the product, the color was a mess and the glue strips were a complete failure.
As someone who used to inspect roofs and eventually went into contracting I can tell you IKO and BP are some of the worst shingles you can buy if you want longevity. I have not seen one single roof come close to their promised warranty claim. It's too bad because IKO is made 2 hours from where I live, I'd like to support them but I cant.
IKO granules fall off the most of any brand
I certainly would not consider IKO though.
everyone deserve second chance. I wouldn't drive Kia 10 years ago. Products improves and market will adjust
Read the warranty. It’s not worth the paper it’s printed on.
Texas Roofer what shingle warranty is worth the paper it’s written on?
As I said in another response,
Massachusetts the CertainTeed rep Don C response to our concerns immediately and has paid for us to replace entire roofs due to color inconsistencies. Regarding IKO, my experience (40 years) is that they are prematurely and have a bad reputation. Regarding second chances, why risk it. What if your customer does their own research and sees the history? I know certain teed in GAF and all the big shots have had issues so maybe that defeats my point. Most customers are busy and don't want to spend their spare time researching and if you have a good reputation
they trust your opinion.
This is flawed. How many nails have been pounded into that board throughout the day(s)? A spectator tries to point this out during the video but is cut off. Perhaps a new board was used, but I'm assuming not. Exclude GAF from the title since they were not part of the test.
U can have iko nothing but problems over my experience of 30 years I used gaf on my house and in 5 years not one problem guy next door iko all they do is blow off and hit my house want to know what iko does on Warranty nothing at all it always the roofs fault and that western ny real weather movements not some warm states
what city/state are you in?
Sounds like bad install. There’s no way Gaf is better then IKO. And I’m an OC guy.
I would take oc durations over iko dynasty
OC duration is amazing roofing shingle, Surenail strip is still impressive
It’s kinda funny how the IKO booth doesn’t have the Duration and the OC booth doesn’t have the Dynasty. There too smart for that. Fools the average guy but not the roofers.
Installed iko on my house in 2004 but always had patch and renail till 2015 i finally replaced them with a reputable brand because they were shot, iko is not worth the money but to us roofers they certainly job security , cant believe they sell enough of these trash shingles to stay in business
Iko desgranules fast . cannot compare oc is best
Don’t waste your money on IKO shingles…they don’t stand behind their product. I hade a roof installed in 2005 and the shingles were falling off the house in 2020. They were just falling apart. Lasted less than 15 years. They are a joke
you most likely had IKO Cambridge. not Iko Dynasty
Malarkey Roofing Products all the way! Only manufacturer to NEVER have been sued and pioneers of modified asphalt and the 3m smog reducing technology. I do like IKO shingles, but OC makes one of the worst shingles on the market.
What makes OC the worst shingle in your opinion?
To bad they don't seal!
Which shingles dont seal?
@@RoofingInsights3.0 iko
Anyone who think owens corning is a top quality shingle is flat wrong. You must not have done enough roofs MALARKEY is king its not about that dumb ass nail strip. OC tons of granular loss and they do not have enough of a lament over bottom mat
You are talking about 4.7 and 4.6 stars difference. Yes Malarkey is 4.7
making the shingle out last the competition is where our money should go...... in 37 years I've never had a shingle blow off my roof. but two have failed in the longevity department..... If your not ripping the shingle your test is the fail... just saying
But who tf are all these guys ??? Fuck are they gonna be knowing about nail placement. I bet not one of them has nailed a shingle in their life
IKO dynasty is trash., Owens Corning duration rules!
Duh....This is a test for the nail bite strength.
Iko is junk, wouldn't put on my dog house.
Cliche, have anything smart to say?
Dr Alaho Olu cured me from HPV
IKO disintegrates on the roof
They copyed OC design .
Come up with your own technology. OKC is acting as if they invented something newl. OKC was hidding when all of their shingles were falling of the roof in the midwesr every time the winds picked up at 45-50 miles per hour.
They didnt copy OC, not sure if you noticed but its on the back of the shingle....
OC copied Malarkey with the strip and everyone is copying gaf with the dimensional shingle
thats mean! lol
mean? It was the rudest thing we have ever done
