In Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the people I met hate the legacy of the Portuguese and the Dutch but value that of the English who left far more...the Dutch the second most, the Portuguese nothing much at all because they were purely exploitative. Capitalism treated it's "own" (Europeans) people very badly, but it developed the European nations as part of its search for profit...to the point where the legacy of this development could be partly appropriated by the common people, often after political/trade union, struggle. So it's the same all round - the fruits of development are later appropriated by those once exploited.
