They complain about their victims having long memories because they want to neatly shove their crimes under the carpet and bore / lecture the world about their greatness and virtue despite a lot of it being a charade . They persisted and continued to do so right up to the 1980s on calling the jurisdiction, (which at all time made up over 80 % per cent of the land mass AND around 80 % of the total population of the island ) Southern Ireland (a title that was out of existence in 1922 ) , Eire and Éire (only to be used when speaking the Irish language , a language that the British suppressed for centuries ) when it fact it was called Ireland. Obviously much of the British population never did and don’t flying a flying fuck about Ireland and were and are quite happy to see it do its own thing. But there lies part of the problem. Many of the same people, will run their mouth off swallowing all the lies that they were told by their betters (twats like the guy on the right hand side ) , all because they know nothing about what they are talking about . They the make incredible stupid decisions and sinister remarks and then wonder why they are disliked or why their city is being bombed . Look at Toff on the right, he knows that he’s wrong and talking bollox, and then starts smirking, knowing full well that he’s hated and that if he was not in a safe room, he’d have his throat ripped out from him. But he’s in a safe zone so tries to act the bollox. The recent Tory governments , ( funny enough not as bad while Cameron was leader ) were full of thieve tossers eg Reece Moggs , Bojo himself etc . They got rings ran around them in a debates and they’d just smile and make some disingenuous quip about how rude or angry that other person is as if it remotely undermines their point - some retards will and did actually fall for it and agree You see the typical mob of Britons when they go travelling in packs for football games or holidays. The English in particular just act with sheer aggression - you’d almost feel sorry for the Welsh and the Scots, they go abroad and the locals take an instant dislike to them until the locals realise that they are Scots and Welsh and not English , then all is well with the world It took some restraint for the African chap in the middle to not clip the clown waffling about how come of the smaller nations would have been better off if they didn’t get independence . But then , such a natural reaction to such an insult (even if there is some truth to it see Zimbabwe , South Africa , Congo , Uganda ) would only play into what that twat was getting at

Frankly, the whole thing is embarrassing to a nuanced mind. I’m Irish, and I’ve always found Behan to be little more than a blistering drunk. Alongside him some random colonial Englishman plucked straight out of the Big Book Of Random Toffs. Then a shouting American and God-only-knows-who from Africa chain-smoking his Lucky Strikes. This isn’t an intelligent debate; it’s a string of poor metaphors and mediocre debate. Deeply disappointing. Hmm, American back then kinda was a force for the good. Least till the mid 1960s Look what they did which the Marshal Plan in Europe. West Germany and West Berlin were more or less up and running by the 1960s after a decade where everything had been bombed to shit . Americans played a big role in that. The Englishman forgets that the people the Romans conquered became Roman subjects and were granted the same rights, which is why the Visigoths fought to remain a part of the empire. You can't compare the power structures and racial legacy left behind by modern day imperialism to the institutions and unique cultures that followed the Romans.
In Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the people I met hate the legacy of the Portuguese and the Dutch but value that of the English who left far more...the Dutch the second most, the Portuguese nothing much at all because they were purely exploitative. The colonialism of the European powers wasn't the same (nor BTW, should it be equated with 'Imperialism' which has far wider implications). Capitalism treated it's "own" (Europeans) people very badly, but it developed the European nations as part of its search for profit...to the point where the legacy of this development could be partly appropriated by the common people, often after political/trade union, struggle. So it's the same all round - the fruits of development are later appropriated by those once exploited.

Britain wouldn’t just walk away , they often insisted on having military bases in the area and the continued access to the markets that was advantageous to the British and maybe not so advantageous to the natives . The British spent their time in those nations promoting minority groups loyal to them over the majority.
