I want you to know that you're my absolute favorite fountain pen reviewer and that I never doubted that you're unbiased and you're fair to all of the pens. I'm happy to listen to your new review and I always appreciate the new videos. So, thank you very much for reviewing all of these fountain pens for us and I can't wait to watch more of them!

You Sire have redefined the entire epitome fountain pen reviews. The sheer honesty which we get to see in your videos, is splendid. I sincerely hope that may be someday we all can be just as honest as you are for something you like and stand for. In this video of yours, I learned more about being unbiased, passionate and honest for the truth than understanding the pen under discussion. Fantastic video Doc. Enjoyed it.

I have this pen currently, and I am having some issues with the feeding mechanism. I have tried cleaning it, as some residual cutting oils might throw it off, but it still is quite spotty in when it wants to write. I find my vintage Parker Vacumatic works more reliably. Thanks for your information about tuning it, I shall try that and hope something changes.

I'm between the Creaper, the Konrad, and the Ahab for a "starter" flex nib. I've got small hands, but I don't want to have to use huge amounts of pressure to flex the nib. What do you think would work the best?
    Thanks!

  • @The1scienceguy

Any reference photo showing the proper alignment would be helpful.
I also have the same issue you have with your pen - the cap more than touches the nib when fully screwed down.
I had such high hopes for this FP and am so let down. :-(

Nice writing sample; good flex demonstrated, nice wide line and gone is the 'feed drag' when writing, even with such a slight angle. Great to see you have tamed the Konrad!

I always appreciate your reviews and the time and passion that you commit to them. Like other commenters, I am sorry that someone my have complained or given you a hard time about earlier videos. Your time and commitment help all of us who are fond of fountain pens and I never doubt your honest and positive intentions. Just bought a Konrad yesterday and inked it up with Noodler's black. It railroads like crazy. Based on the inexpensive price, I am willing to fiddle with the pen.

Scratchy Nibs: I have five of these pens I use mainly on Stillman & Brin Alpha paper for architecture sketches. The nibs were a bit scratchy right out of the box but after spending about ten minutes on each with some 12,000 Micro Mesh, they work fine. I use several colors of Noodler's ink and there were a few problems before I did the surgery, but none now.
I enjoy your videos as they are quite entertaining but extremely informative, which is a nice combination. Thanks for the education!

I rarely comment on other folks videos. I felt it important to say, (particularly on this video) that I find an honesty in your reviews that is very refreshing. I have also found Noodlers to be nice pens. Inexpensive, easy to take apart, put back together, and, dare I say, customize. They have their down sides, but they have plenty of good things going for it as well. Nice job on this video and all your videos.

As a side note, Conway stewart, at my request, swapped the hormonal medium italic for a regular medium. It writes wet and smooth now with the only oddity being the tipping rubs and clicks a

I'll add my voice to those who bought a Konrad after watching this revised review of the pen. I have an Ahab in stinky green transparent "celluloid derivative" that never worked to my satisfaction until I learned from your efforts, and is now an excellent and reliable writer. I chose a clear demonstrator for the Konrad (also stinky - rather like baby powder, but tangier), reset the feed as you suggested, loaded it with Sailr Jentle Epinard, and it's also a good writer so far.
    Many thanks!

Thank you for your videos--this weekend, I finally bought my first pen in over a decade, along with my first bottle of ink. It is a Noodler's Creeper flex nib and a bottle of Dark Matter. Your pen care videos convinced me that I can handle the upkeep on a fountain pen. Now I'm afraid for my wallet....

I have been writing a great amount with it, and is doing it a little better, I change the ink and is worked a little better too, so it's kinda decent now, it was so cheap i am satisficed-like now, there are some problems but i'm gonna used as much as I can.

Holy Smoke! Quel kerfuffle! As others said, I've always found your reviews to be fair and honest, which is one reason I like them so much. (Flying Ballpoints & Funny Hats being other reasons. ;) And I thought the original Konrad vid was great because, if someone had that same experience while writing in the middle of the night (like I do!)--how nice to have some support & advice! Hope all's well now.

Great to see your videos, I do not know other fountain pen lover, so it's like hearing a friend or something to watch yur videos. that skiping happened to my Watrman Hemmisphere :(
BTW, I just got a new fountain pen today, i got a Pentel Excalibur rollerball (really good) and i ran into a Sabonis full metal fountain pen with a really big nib, when I saw it near it was an Iridium Point Germany, so I get it immediatly, I haven't try it yet, it is so simple and preety!

  • @diomede14
    @diomede14 12 років тому

I know, I know, you like the Ahab...I got a new Konrad today, btw (not from Peyton), but from a store in NYC. It writes so smooth one will want to sing peans to it. But after the third line, it releases huge blobs of ink shamelessly on the paper! Exact opposite problem to my first one. So, you know what, you don't have to be nice to them, they do have quality control issues. You're quite right about that! Abt costly pens, I don't know why I like cheap smelly fountain pens with a vintage look!

    Dear Mr Brown, great reviews.
I am looking to buy a Noodler's pen as I have found a source in the UK :).......but which one?
I will be drawing with it as the flexi nib will give me great line variation, I need a big ink reservoir and it needs to be easily cleaned as I may use different coloured inks. I can afford the 'Konrad', the 'Nib Creaper', or the 'Ahab' but I really am unsure of which one to go for. In your valued opinion which one would suit my needs best? Kind regards, Jim.

X-Feather's label to die for, but it takes forever to dry, which would be prone to smearing. Never tried Lamy inks.
Google has interesting hits on "left handed fountain pen", it seems the key is for the ink to dry fast, so inks designed for that and smaller nibs should help.
The Goulet Pen Company has ink samples at 1.25$ for 2ml -- more than most pens will hold. Is there any way you could borrow a nice pen from a friend or family and find the right ink for you?

Hi Stephen, I just received an Ahab and a Konrad. In both videos about the Konrad I think you were too hard on yourself thinking you were the problem. My Ahab works perfectly, the Konrad is a problem. I have all the problems that you had except you had more flow. I am new in this but the Konrad will be my first attempt to improve on a nib. And I rather like the smell.

I see you ended up fixing your flex nib. I have tried everything for 2 days I about went thru one part of my micro mesh and still was scratchy. I would adjust the tines not even 2 sentences later they were right back to being out of alignment. I think I might just get another flex nib or maybe an Edison broad for that one. Thanks for the videos they really helped on the 2 other nibs I smoothed out and made wetter.

Is there an equivalent pen you can suggest...looks like Ahab has the same nib, so I am not interested in the Ahab I guess. I do art occasionally, so it's good to have a flex pen, plus I am on this whole vintage trip, so love the look of Konrad (Ahab, not so much, though demonstrator is nice, esp when you hold it up). Is Konrad good for regular writing (which is what I 90% would use the pen for), or are you telling us through your video - "No my friend, it will keep skipping on you".

    Hi,
And just a silly remark to add to the more serious stuff.
There was a time I think in the UK car industry where everyone would relax towards the end of Friday afternoon ready for the break the had at the weekend. Not sure if I chose the right industry but in an industry in England UK this happened and it was known that cars were not as well finished as at the start of the week. It became known as "A Friday Afternoon One," or something like that.
So maybe Noodlers had a person who knew they were leaving and wanted to sabotage the pens, or as above it was one run of pens that the cap was actually threaded too deep in an already tight fitting cap it would not need much and could easily be missed on a quick cjeck until a load of complaints came back to the company about a specific pen and not many would have thought to even take note of the depth of the cap because they maybe had pens before where there was easily enough space, so it was note a ritual they used when considering buying a pen, or in other words, these pens were "Friday Afternoon ones!" ;-)

There's a discussion on Fountain Pen network on which pen Anne Frank had. One person visited the museum (in a different forum) to find out and the other wrote to Mont Blanc...search proved inconclusive. If you're keen, try "Anne Frank fountain pen" in Google. If I put the link here, it's not posting it...

I can really understand all of the angst and controversy around to Konrad. I've had two, and when they work well, they work really really well, but it seems to take quite a bit of fiddling to get them there.
I use one as my primary writer, but it took the parts from two different Konrads to get there. At this point, it would take an order of magnitude more expensive pen to be better than mine is now, but neither worked right out of the box, at all.

100% sure, sir. The story goes...she was presented it by her grandmother in germany. In Netherlands, she was not allowed to use it in school. Later, I think, she says, with special permission she was allowed it. When she went into hiding, she primarily wrote with it. She has an entry in her diary called "Ode to my Fountain Pen", where she narrates all this and also, how she accidentally threw the pen in the fire with some "bad beans" and it burnt it up (esp since it was celluloid).

  • @Metalkatt

  • @diomede14
    @diomede14 12 років тому

Thanks for replying. Sent it back, but I am negotiating wether to get a refund or replacement. Seller suddenly changed mind from replacing the entire pen to just replacing the nib...hence my negotiation :) You say you worked on the nib, i.e., smoothing etc. From your video I thought you smoothened it coz nob may have misaligned while closing. Did you smoothen the nib to fix the skipping or smooth out the misalignment? When you say "you like" it, has the skipping stopped completely? Btw you rock!

Brown, please, please respond to my question, which is the following:
I tweaked my konrad like nobody's biz...but it skipped & skipped...forget flexing...I was normally writing. Despite the tweaks, it wrote better on paper that lets the ink blot rather than on stiff paper...on stiff paper it skips! So after my teeth gritting, I sent the pen back to PeytonStreetpens. They are going to send me a new one. Your revisited video is still not convincing enough :( My question is should I buy this pen?

Sounds like you were hit with a bit of cognitive dissonance. Sometimes it is difficult to separate the noise from the music with Noodler's. I love my Ahab, and the Noodler's inks. If I based my purchasing choices on personalities or politic messaging, which I confess I sometimes do, then I would probably avoid them. Overall the products are a well made and a great value.

Is there a gap between the feed and the inside of the section. In mine there is and air can flow right over the top of the nib into the reservoir. Fiddling with it I got the gap small enough it doesn't drip, but the ink flow isn't even unless I put a bit of rubber band or something to block the gap. It's a pretty cheap pen, but still not happy to have gotten useless junk for the price.

Worst 50$ I had spent. I have 12 pens, 10 of them are cheaper than Konrad, none of them has as horrible nib as this: it skips, scratches, stops providing ink for up to 15 seconds and is just not much flexible (I don't know how much pressure must I put to get as wide lines as yours), I can get better results with Lamy stubs. The clip is a bit curved and pen looks asimmetric. Horrible. Definitely not worth to be "made in USA". Jinhao has better quality control in China than this! And for this price I can get 1.5 TWSBI Eco, that is made much better.
