Hi Dave, just discovered your channel and I liked the way you tell things to the watchers - very simple and clear. I have a IH 654s my-self and this year I am planning to change piston rings and head gasket due to high amount of oil discharging from the discharge channel and I also experince noticable power lose on the engine. Can you tell me possible reasons for oil discharge?
I don't know what you mean by the "discharge channel". Burning oil is generally caused by weak or broken piston rings or worn valve guides. Oil coming from the crankcase vent would be caused by weak rings allowing excessive pressure coming past the rings and pushing oil out the vent. Thanks for watching!
@@CanadianRedneck15 I bought this tractor it was in peices your video was great and it runs awesome just need to figure out those lines. Thanks for replying
I've got a 1962 B275 Diesel, really like it and works great. I've owned it now for 1-1/2 years and when I first bought it I noticed that the temperature gauge wasn't working so I just kept a close eye on the coolant level until I had time to look at it. I finally replaced the temp. gauge with a new one(Sparex) and still the needle doesn't move. I now decided to test and see if the new gauge is good which I should of done with the old one. I took the sensor out of the top of the engine and put it in boiling water and the needle went up telling me that the gauge is good. I'm now thinking thermostat. Should I just leave it and not change or check the thermostat. If there's isn't a thermostat in place should I put one in or just leave it, the tractor is running well but I don't know how important that the temp. comes up a little higher so that it reads on the gauge. Even when I was using it this summer to spread some sand and gravel, the temp. gauge never moved and I worked it pretty good not crazy but steady. Thanks from Kazabazua, QC!
It would be a good idea to check the thermostat, it is better for the engine if it gets up to operating temperature. Running cold can lead to sludge build-up and it won't burn as clean. Thanks for watching!
Hi Dave. Great videos and knowledge of the inta's. We've just had a 685 (d239) done up. recon head, pistons liners, bearings, injectors, fuel pump etc. Trouble is it don't run very nice!! Starts much better, but seems low on power and lots of blue smoke that doesn't clear even after plenty of work. The smoke stinks too! Has probably done over 50 hrs work now. I think it hunts too after a period of work. Could the timing be off? It is not using oil. Any pointers would be great. Thanks
Check out this video, ua-cam.com/video/LGVjRAaec7U/v-deo.html at around 9:36 I explain the timing marks. For the actual pump timing I got a neighborhood expert to set that for me as I wasn't quite sure on that. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed watching this series. Can the valve stem seals be replaced by bringing the pistons to tdc and resting the valve on the piston or does the head have to come off.
I am not sure but I expect the head would have to come off, you could try and worst case you would have to take the head off. :) As a general rule these engines don't use valve seals, they rely on tight clearances in the valve guide to keep oil from leaking by. Thanks for watching!
Very good videos! I would like to know if the adjustments and tolerances also apply to the D246 (784) engine; since I'm repairing mine. Thank you very much, greetings from Uruguay.

Hi Dave and happy new year, Very interesting content and a good channel! I.ve got a question for you if i can. Is there a particular break in procedure that usually follows the rebuild of an engine? i would like to know what you usually do in this cases!
Great video. I need to rebuild an IH D239 engine this winter and I'll be using this video for guidance. One quick question - I'm thinking of fitting the bigger bore pistons (100mm vs 98.4mm) and liners from the larger D246 engine. Stroke length is the same. Can you think of any problems I might face with the slightly larger pistons?
Hi there Dave. Many thanks once again for those great videos on the IH engine rebuild. I will soon have to do this on my 585xl’s D-206 engine and after watching you I will take it on without hesitation ;) I have two questions if I may: 1, do you think it is possible that my 1963 B 275d could have developed an over pressure in the engine oil system? Slight engine oil leak is becoming apparent through the fuel lift up pum joint on the right side of the engine as well as the front right hand corner of the block/cylinder head joint. The engine oil gauge shows full deflection. 2, Would it be possible to order some parts for the B-275 from your store and have them shipped to Iceland? Many thanks for your efforts, Benny.
I am glad you found the video helpful, not a bad job to do at all. With your 275 it would be very unusual to have an increase in oil pressure but I don't suppose impossible. The fuel lift pump is in an unpressurised area lubricated by splash so the leak there is likely caused by a loose joint (lever pivot worn). The leak at the cylinder head is more of a concern, worth checking out. I would try another oil pressure gauge to see if indeed there is higher pressure or a bad gauge. You are welcome to contact me, I am willing to send parts to Iceland. Thanks for watching!
