Others to check out are: Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, Learning to Fly, Don't Come Around Here No More, American Girl, Refugee, You Got Lucky, Breakdown, The Waiting, Don't Do Me Like That, Mary Jane's Last Dance, You Don't Know How it Feels.
This whole album is fire! I remember when it came out. To BJ’s point about how when a man finds “his” woman you can’t tell him anything…he is 100% right. Perfect song to describe that is “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge. Percy sings that with such emotion it’s unreal.
Yet another nice reaction from you two! Tom Petty has mega hits. If you get a chance, try "Woman In Love" or a duet he sang with Stevie Nicks "Stop Draggin My Heart Around."
I have always categorized Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as “Chill Rock”. Definitely had a distinctive voice that really separated him from the pack. Keep going with TP&H it’s totally worth it. I may have already said this, but man the smiles that break out on your faces when Petty gets going after his spoken word into “here comes my girl” is priceless. Billion dollar smiles of sheer love.
When this came out, I was 11 years old. My Dad bought the 8 track tape and I remember us driving around listening to it and asking him to play this song over and over. Man, I miss those days and miss my Dad. One of my most treasured gifts from him is my love of music. R.I.P. Dad, I am still listening.

My morning walk/jog circuit, takes me by Tom Petty’s birthplace -where he lived here in Gainesville, Fla - tomorrow, I’ll be humming this song as I go by his old house…
TP and The Heartbreakers have an organ/piano dominated sound, much like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and The Band. In this case, the great Benmont Tench plays both organ and piano. I'm a huge fan of this sound, which is why I love these artists.
It reminds me a bit of the uniqueness of The Doobie Brothers Black Water. Very few artists have the courage to step out, like was demanded on a composition like this. I remember at the time it came out it seemed so staccato, he was yelling, the lyrical timing seemed random, and yet each bar somehow tumbled into place rather neatly anyway. The fact that all the parts fit and worked is one piece of genius. But the fact that, as a human being, he was willing to risk trying something that sounded so different from the things around it, was a big part of what makes this great, and what makes other great people great: courage.
Tom was a victim of the Oxycodone pain killer. He had an injured hip that needed surgery but, until then he was in great pain. Tom just wanted to finish his tour before the surgery so, he took ever increasing dosages of the dangerous drug., If you were to see his very last performance you would see him limping off stage. Tom was soon dead from the Oxycodone. This was before all the real dangers of it was widely known.
He actually had Avascular Necrosis in both hips and knees. He'd been living with it a very long time. It's extremely painful as there is no blood/oxygen getting to the affected joints. He masked the pain with medication and allowed him to keep performing. It is a very debilitating condition. It is sad that he had to use a lot of painkillers to keep moving
the danger of oxycodone has been a known thing for a long time. the crisis isn't lack of knowledge. The crisis is the lack of of hesitation so many doctors had in continuing to prescribe it. About 5 years ago, the DEA really started to crack down on these primary doctors prescribing it.
@@Frostrazor Some people actually need it for pain and don't abuse it, or take it to get high, but because people use it for their party lifestyle they can't get it. This is refer madness level stuff to blame the drug for people like Tom Petty abusing it.
I think my favorite TP&THB songs are A Woman in Love and Something Big from Hard Promises. There is a great video from the band for A Woman in Love. My sister absolutely loved Tom and because of her I know their first five albums really well.

So in the summer of 1980 I met a girl at Garner State Park in Texas. We were 14 and had an innocent week of holding hands, walking through the park and floating in the Frio River... This song would be playing on the radio... And a line in it he says, "shout it", sounds like he said "Shelley". This song holds a special place in my heart for young love... Tragically she was abducted and murdered about 7 years after that after she did a late shift at her work. 🥲

"It seems I remember the good times were just a little bit more in focus." That's such an incredibly concise description for the way I feel when I think back to the better times. People say it was because it was a simpler time when you were younger, lacking the same variety and degree of stresses and perspectives as you evolve through life, but more in focus captures it better for me. More present. More in whatever I was doing for however long I was doing it. That's where I was, not part there and part somewhere else all the time.
