Crash Course on Wardlow

  • In this descent I'm on a crash course down Wardlow, falling not just once but twice in the hardest and steepest parts of the trail. Wardlow is a rad single track in the northern most portion of the Santa Ana's. It drops down east into Corona from near the top of Sierra Peak. In good condition its a pretty hairy descent: loose, rutted and steep. In its current condition its all that times two. The recent winter rains have left it even more exposed, raw and with more pronounced ruts. While I successfully descended the day prior, I think what went wrong today was not proceeding with enough caution. On the first crash I didn't look at the hardest part of the descent and failed to stay far right. I got sucked into the rut on the left. I was going too fast to control that critical line correction. On the second fall, my left foot became unclipped. There is sweeping right turn that I failed to make which I attribute to being out of balance. Maybe if I were going slower I would have held it together, foot clipped in or not. The bottom lower part of Wardlow is also shown in this video: a flowy grassy singletrack next to a creek.

Oh man! Of all the places to fall, those rocky sections, glad you were ok aside from the road rash, the ruts are the Santa Ana’s trademark I think, keep those videos coming😃

Yeah I got pretty lucky! My mistake was being overconfident since I did it the day prior and so I did not walk the hardest section to get a reminder of how narrow and how far right I needed to be… the second fall was just silly, left foot unclipped so I was all out of balance etc. crash course down wardlow!! Glad I was okay too :-)

Are you made out of plastic? Great job taking those falls!

Just the plastic parts. I was lucky I didn’t really hurt myself, those spots are steep, rutted and rocky!
