Let's Play Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, The Best CD-i Game That Wasn't On The CD-i

- If you have a love (or, dare I say it, a "love") of games like Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Link: The Faces of Evil then you really owe it to yourself to get a look at Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore. It manages to, at times, be a pitch-perfect homage to those games while also not being unplayable garbage the way those games were. Best of both worlds, really.

"It's sick. It's sick. You'd have to be sick in the goddamn head to make this." Another quote for the box!
"It's beautiful"

Put it on the box
Jeff Gerstmann is the only video game journalist with the bonafides and expertise on the CD-i to cover this game that appeals to the very tiny segment of gamers that have nostalgia for the CD-i and also those terrible Zelda CD-i games. I can see this game going on sale in the eShop very soon to try to recoup costs. Truly a labor of love, I suppose.
I don't have nostalgia for the CD-i cause I never had one but I definitely have nostalgia for the CD-i infomercial.
@@kenneld It was memorable to say the least.
Who else is left alive to tell us the tales of these CDI's
I remember seeing something on G4TV in the mid 2000s about "the worst games ever"' of course you had Atari's ET, Custard's Revenge, Superman, and that Zelda CDi game
I heard they got Zelda and Link's VA from the original CD-i games as characters in this game. CD-i Zelda is this game's narrator voice. CD-i Link is the tutorial voice.
Keep up what you do Jeff, the games community would never be the same in your absence.
I hope they made their money back. This is something I'd never buy and no one would ever cover. I'm so glad it exists, and I'm so glad Jeff is here for it.
john linneman from digital foundry was involved with this, he would be a perfect guest for the jeff gerstmann show
This would be cool. I've always thought Jeff would really bounce off well with the DF guys.
Need more pan flute solo on that title menu
"YOU. ARE. EL. DORADOOOO."
I'm here for the sickos. Excellent stuff.
YES! HA HA
HA... *_YES!_*
Even 30 years later, as an old man he's still teaching people how to do the duck walk. KEWL, huh!?
For some reason this game also gives me strong Shantae vibes
The composer of this game has a channel called Button Masher. He’s an amazing musician!
The level of cheese and accuracy to those old CDI games is perfect. This game is completely ridiculous in the best possible way.
Leading NES and CD-I correspondent, Jeff Gerstmann.
The game is really fun! Completed it in about 3 hours and was entertained the whole time. And I never even played the CD-i Zeldas, I only know them from other people’s videos. Do give it a try, it’s truly special. Ordered the physical edition right after finishing, too.
If this is the best CDi game not on CDi, Laser Lords is probably the best CDi game on CDi.
ahhh yes, a fellow esteemed laser lords aficionado. a pleasure
55:13 - Jeff stops to inspect his ruby
I think they've got something here. Games on compact discs might be the next big thing!
I knew if there was any place I was going to see this game, it would be here
Immediately brings me back to the Inca people stream
Wow, really incredible audio implementation on this. They nailed the sound and feel of the era.
Jeff is definitely right about the characters not undulating enough, I pulled up some Gamelon footage right when he said that, and he is 100% correct.
Talk about a pleasant surprise, dropping this video. Thanks Jeff!
This is like too competent? If that makes sense
I appreciate how often they'll have the princess have weird and ugly poses. A lesser game would've had the main character look cool while everyone else were disgusting weirdos. Also how the last frame of the animation hangs for a second while the music loads back in.
I almost didn't even see this one coming until I listened vics basement podcast. Some pretty cool stories on how it all started and the stories throughout.
This music reminds me a lot of the old weather channel
This soundtrack has to be from the same guys as Inca People.
This game would be a 9/10 if Cate Blanchett from Jeff’s fave films LOTR voiced the intro.
wow that soundtrack is fantastic
I think I just need this to have it. It looks like hot trash, in the best possible way. I can't believe how well they nailed the look and feel. Also agreed that the animations could be a bit more outlandish as well, however what's there is still pretty damn rad. I love the amount of insanity it takes to create something like this. It's what makes gaming so great.
I love these kind of side-scrolling adventure games. I’ve never played the CD-1, but this reminds me a bit of Popful Mail from the Sega CD. Brilliant. I’ll buy this.
The Characters look awesome, which is a bonus point in my book.
This is totally deranged and beutiful. Every frame of these animations belongs in a museum.
Awesome color pencil drawings in the intro
...it also needs more major sections of character's clothing shifting in color from frame to frame.
It's pretty tight when your 1990's 1000 dollar console held a quality somewhere between early runs of animated TMNT for it's media marvels, and Amiga run-off for it's gameplay software. I know this isn't the case, but if the CD-I had happened anywhere outside that weird bubble of just about everyone trying to get into a console market that was the early 90's, the discrepancy of what you were charging for and what you actually got would be cause for money-laundering investigations.
This whole video was a fever dream
Jeff youre my Jewel of Faramore
Jewel of Faramore is gonna be Jeff's 2024 game of the year, isn't it
When I saw this game on my Discovery Queue I couldn't believe it. It's brilliant!
As someone with no context besides memes ("Exxxcuse me Princess"), watching Jeff play this was a joy.
The backtracking kills any interest I have in playing this myself though. Maybe it is a pretty short game and this is how they pad it out?
I can't wait to play this high and relive my childhood.
The head guy who made this "remastered" Wand of Gamelon a few years back as a PC port, and I think Faces of Evil.
46:16 I like the mirage effect in the background
Dail is a hell of a Nascar driver though
The cutscenes with the 3D models were really offputting, but otherwise this looked fucked up in just the right ways
I started my career making CDi productions and triggers my traumas. It also reminds me painfully of the glut of budget releases after the major publishers abandoned the dying Amiga.
Oh *Seedy Eye*
I hate/love it
53:11 Neha from Disco Elysium?
30:20 I never played those games and didn’t know that mario reference, I think it’s clever what they did with this game, of course the art style and animation through me off but the challenging enemies and the lvl design is intriguing
This one was MADE for you Jeff.
I can't believe they made a game just for Jeff Gerstmann.
59:26 In the latter half of this cutscene, this fairy has what I would eighter call the Hazbin Hotel Eyes or the Ren and Stimpy Show Crazy Eyes. Why does the fairy look so gourgeous yet so unstelling at the first time? Is she a Yandere?
PLUS, the fairy sounds like FlutterShy from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
she looks unsettling because she's wall-eyed and has white pupils
It needs to freeze before and after the 'ting' for the tracks loading
Pan Flute solo
41:36 lol
Big Gilles Douieb vibes.
Labor of love and it oozes said love.
Jeff found the perfect Jeff game
This is truly the future of video games
I want a CD-i MiSTer core SOO bad!!
i think i have to buy this
Whoaaaaaaa I never meant to brag
But I've got him where I want him right now
i am here for this
What someone made a cd-I game in 2024 wow😊
my man is NOT going to the store
I wish the cutscene pacing was a lot faster, everything is far too comprehensible
Amazing
That entire generation of early CD based multimedia systems was fucking wild. Everything looked so ugly.
I would only ever trust a scientist’s opinion on this game
Now do Burn:Cycle
I genuinely don't know who this is for.
I'm old enough to get the joke, and I appreciate the joke, it's a funny joke! But I would never spend money on it.
People spent years of their lives making this.
it's a genuinely good game
This game is like 90% of the way to where it wants to go, but that one cutscene that was suddenly just 3D models moving like a student's first animation project, with a filter over the models to make it look closer to the regular art was just jarring and harms the visual identity they're trying to go for. I know games are hard to make and sometimes you have to make sacrifices but man, it's unfortunate.
you have a good point but I kind of thought it made it a little funnier in my opinion
i guess cuz they are talking about all this serious plot drama and at the same time they are just drawn in shitty 3d models XD
Better than Low G man: the low gravity man
*Promosm*
Oh wow is this an Inca-like?
So if you were still writing reviews, how could you even evaluate a game like this that's trying to be bad on purpose but not in a frustrating way??? It's wrong on so many levels!
Dail tries to make a good joke, but fails miserably at being funny 75% of the time. (He’s worse than CDi Link.)
