1:31:06 "listen to the fidelity of that door being opened" -- at the time, Philips' certification process INSISTED that all sound effects had to be recorded in a studio at 44khz. Like, if you had a click sound in your game, they wanted you to record that professionally. I'm sure a bunch of games didn't actually do that, but audio was SUPER IMPORTANT to Philips to the point of overkill. That kind of fidelity just gobbles up memory.
The CD-i is just an amazing piece of technology. Imagine spending enough money to buy two super nintendos just to come home with The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe
And then years later, do some reading about Robert Maplethorpe and quickly realize that photographing flowers was just about the least interesting thing in his otherwise fascinating career.
Oh btw soldering is easy, you wouldn't have any problem. Getting an ideal solder joint isn't as easy but that's not particularly important. Think of it like glue that you can easily melt again if you need to
Growing up in the benelux in the 90's meant seeing way more CD-i's than anyone can stomach. I grew up with the CD-i as my first console and Hotel Mario is the first game I ever played. I have a soft spot for the apprentice, it's definitely the best game on the console even though it's very middling, the studio responsible also made a lucky luke game based on the belgian comics and it's also very mediocre if not just bad(been ages since I played it). The team that made those games is dutch and a few of them ended up in some big studios later(kojima, sony santa monica) and a handful ended up at Guerilla games including the sound designer for the game ending up composing the music for the Killzone games and at the least the first Horizon. so that's a handfull of usseless info about a game only I care about and I don't even care that much. Anyway, love your stuff Jeff, keep it up man!! (also go listen to the soundtracks for those games, they're bangers!!)
The CD-i's games may all be pretty terrible but all the educational/instructional content will never not be fascinating to me; the age of the Interactive Multimedia Encyclopedia is fun to look back on
That same song was also on the Wii TrackMania game they released around the same time, and it slaps just as hard too; that Wii one has so many good tracks.
i remember seeing someone investigating interest for a cdi ode not that long ago and more recently a multi system ode that also supported cd-i when an extra solder board was used...so there's definitely options for real hardware becoming more viable at least
I think that Jeff's CD-I content is great... but it is weird to think that this dumb console has had a sort of resurgence in the UA-cam era. It most certiainly given more hours of enjoyment as a joke than the actual console at its time of release.
Trackmania is one of my all time favorite series. Never got to play the first one, I started with boxed version of Sunrise Extreme on the PC. That game even had it's own trackmania dedicated youtube-like website at one point. Never played it on console and don't want to lol as keyboard is the only way to play this racing game. Saw a review on xplay of all places lol. The one game specifically Xplay led me too lol
Why does Mario need to close the doors? He is searching for the princess, wouldn't it make more sense to have to open all doors to see what is behind them?
So, Trackmania question... Is there a "good" (for a given definition of good, obviously) Trackmania server up? I'm not going to bother figuring out the monetization racket they've got going if there isn't a pile of unnecessary interface overlays and a dubstep version of the X-Files theme at the end of that particular rainbow. It doesn't have to be this Trackmania, either. I'll hunt down Canyon or whatever if that's where things are "good".
With your trackmania addiction, for some reason it seems like you would be into rocket league. That's the one and only online multiplayer games I've put a ton of time into. I've put a couple thousand hours into it, since it launched on PS4 8 years ago or whatever.
Doesn't UA-cam have a policy against mentioning Fieldy's Dreams within the first three minutes of a video?
STILL a threat
@@poposterous236 absolutely
Deeply upsetting

the sense of speed in trackmania is something else
The fact that Jeff doesn't have a drawer full of knives is proof that we can all be better
Fatherhood changes a motherfucker
I feel like this is an artifact of grown up jeff. Young jeff would have switchblades and butterfly knives
Trackmania and questionable old games. What more do you want from a Jeff Gerstmann stream? What more do you want??
Even more Trackmania !

@Jaspertine I think he was Patti Smith's husband right?
CD-i still don’t know about these games, man.

jeff gerstmann playing trackmania in the new year... an auspicious sign!
I played the hell of out of trackmania ds. Amazing music too.
The best part of CD-I are the FMV cutscenes 🤣

First console ever! That’s an experience, good for you for hanging in there.
Trackmania taught me to believe in life after love
Holy shit, you're the 4th Paul Harvey reference I ran into TODAY. And now you know the rest of the story!
The CD-i's games may all be pretty terrible but all the educational/instructional content will never not be fascinating to me; the age of the Interactive Multimedia Encyclopedia is fun to look back on
But is it as good as Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus?
Trackmania DS is okay, but it's no Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus
But is it better than Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man?
massive track from Trackmania DS !!! 53:40
Daft Punk would be proud
Music at 53:40 slaps. Also Jeff I just mailed you some Dragon Ball Z energy drinks, you’re welcome

"Wooddoor Hysteria Hotel" is a surprisingly good name, good job Hotel Mario
"And of course let's not forget BART!!"

I turned this on and my girlfriend beckoned from the other room - "what is he drinking THIS time?"
Daft Crunk 1:07:16

A++++++ Great Communication
God damn it; that Trackmania song slaps.
The CDi makes me irrationally angry.
Trackmania DS do got some hot beats though
A touch of trackmania you say... (*takes clothes off*)
Good job Doo!
Please, Mr. Do was my father. Call me Doo.
custom music is goated 25:00
Still a threat.
Fanny packs?! Excuse me!? These are Team Yamaha RACING Pouch Waist Bags!
I love TM, but fell off from the current game around the 2nd year. I'll have to check it out again, you got me jonesing!

That helmet sequence is basically one of these stupid AI generated image videos with a title like "Cyborg Helmet Digital Technology Possibilities"

"Jeff?"
Jeff?
Go ahead and spin.
play Burn:Cycle!
A Classic Jeff Gerstmann Video right here
The lady in the makeup game towards the end is trying so hard to keep an american accent. she keeps slipping into a british one.
