The recent passing of Akira Toriyama has brought forth in my mind something I've been saying for a while. We need more like this gold collection that Digital Eclipse has been doing for Atari, Karateka, and now Llamasoft. These creators are not getting any younger and window to make something like this for the archives is quickly running out. Shigeru Miyamoto's 71. We've already missed our chances to get Gunpei Yokoi or Satrou Iwata. Yoshio Sakamoto is 65. Yuji Naka is 58. Keiji Inafune's 58. Hideo Kojima is 60. Roberta Williams is 71 and Ken Williams is 69. It takes time to make something like this and you never know what it will be a treasure like Toriyama's time when he passed at 68.

The concept of a "Dog Tolerance" meter is so incredibly conceptually advanced.

I'm so happy that this exists. Jeff Minter deserves it, and it gives me a measure of joy that I can't explain without basically writing a whole damn article about it to see Llamatron preserved in a modern release.

something i think both jeff (gerstmann) and these digital eclipse collections are good at is situating these games in their contexts, and explaining what makes them cool compared to other games of their era. some of these games came out 15 years before i was born so it's cool to have this perspective! thanks jeff

I met Minter one time in the UK, he just wanted to talk about his sheep and he smelled lovely.

I went to retro gaming convention in the north of England and Jeff was there (in hindsight, of course he was there) but I was too starstruck and didn't want to pester the guy, so I didn't say anything to him.

For as much Jeff has talked about Jeff Minter over the years, I'm kind of surprised he's not in the documentary. This collection does look like a banger though!

Looking forward to playing this. Last interview I saw with him was on the Retro hour podcast. Always fascinating to listen to.

Jeff Minter's name has always been a barometer for me to know just how deep a person's gaming knowledge is. It's easy to namedrop Cliffy B, Will Wright, or Shigeru Miyamoto, but you say Jeff Minter and i know you're the real deal.

Thanks for the stream on one of my favourite devs ❤. We used to get his games with the disk on the front of magazines in the uk and they were always fun to play and figure out. It’s the only time I’ve ever asked myself if picking up the smoking power-up for my sheep currently riding on the back of a camel good or not???
Polynius in vr is an amazing experience. There’s really nothing quite like it.

The name "Hover Bovver" comes from an old TV advert for the Qualcast Concorde lawnmower, which advertised itself as "a lot less bovver than a hover". The "hover" in question being the new style of "hover mowers" like the Flymo that were becoming popular but didn't have grass boxes, making them somehow bothersome for the people who tend lawns. This concludes your lawnmower minute.

I will pick this up at some point. I am fascinated by Minter but never actually got into any of his games. I didn't grow up with them (just too young for bedroom coder era) and found it very difficult to engage with his games in the early 2000s. I may not have the right eyes and brain to actually be able to play his games but I'm grateful for everything he is and has done

Radar Rat Race might be my earliest gaming memory. I wish I did more with my Vic-20 other than destroy it. This collection's been really interesting just to go back to that kind of hardware.
And in the home computing scene, it seemed relatively common to put your name on a game. I remember Codemasters doing it with the Darling brothers and the Oliver twins. Kevin Toms has his name and face out there on Football Manager cassette cases. Matthew Smith had his name on his stuff, etc.

How did he get the VIC Gridrunner to run so fast?
I hope they get the video hitchiness, as well as the de-syncing of audio and video, fixed quickly.

The side ship in Gridrunner doesn't actually hurt you! It just intersects with the laser at the bottom to create an extra mine.

Sadly Brian Herbert seems to have absolutely no interest in preserving the Dune game franchise, but it could be a fascinating subject for one of these documentary game collections. Dune II is one of the most important games of all time, but the stories around Cryo's weirder Dune games also seems worth to be told in this style, and there would of course be the FMV craziness of the Sega CD version and the two Westwood/Intelligent Games releases Dune 2000 and Emperor Battle for Dune. Would also love to hear Frank Klepacki and Stephane Picq talk about their very different approaches to writing soundtracks for those games.

Flymo is a brand of lawn mower that was popular in the UK in the 80s that kind of glides around rather than having any wheels. Almost like a giant 'weed whacker' which we call strimmer in the UK

Hover and bother do rhyme in a lot of UK accents. The song that plays during the game is well known in the UK, called English Country Garden about how nice and serene and well mannered it is there. So it's a funny and clever choice
