HOW I POWER A KAYAK WITH A BILGE PUMP !

  • Can Bilge Pump power a lifetime manta tandem fishing #kayak? No one can really give me the answer, so here we go. I saw a similar project here • DIY Jet Ski Powered by... , so I think it should work. I #3Dprint a bilge pump holder and a fishing rod holder. I used a 3700 GPH 12v Boat Marine Plumbing Electric Bilge Pumps with some PVC from Home Depot and of course a 12v batter mounted on the back of the kayak. The result was pretty satisfying. It was more like quiet bladeless trolling motor than a Jet engine.

You saved me a weekend of work with high chance of failure, thanks haha! Nice design though! I'll go to plan B which is RC motor and right angle gear box...the worlds smallest and ugliest outboard. Sometimes I just need a 1/16 HP helping hand in strong wind

This is exactly what I need...... Just something that'll let me slowly troll the banks when fishing..... Nice setup bud, thanks for sharing....

*I bought this model for my 14 ft Jon boat. **enjoyable.fishing** recommend love it!!! It pushes my boat with ease ( 2 men 220 each). I would highly recommend this to anyone.*

I bet installing a nozzle reducing the outlet size (similar to a jet ski nozzle) would greatly increase the thrust.

It was worth the try! I had been wondering about how well it would work. Thanks for sharing.

My sons and I just tried something similar today with an inflatable kayak and 2 bilge pumps, each rated at 1100gph. We barely moved. I'm going to play around with reducing the outlet size, or putting a propeller on it.

If you fabricate a scoop so that the bilge pump can suck water towards the bow i think it will help...

Instead, install the pump in the bow and just run a plastic line to the stern for the outlet.

Hey man clever idea with the pvc pipe. The small pump won’t get you moving very fast but it will work better if you have the out let out of the water a nozzle with a stator to straighten the water flow will also help. But if you want any real speed you need a bigger pump. I had a similar idea and bought a 24 volt 2000 gpm bilge pump to put on a paddle board but I got into jet drives and build boards with them instead but for your purposes a larger pump with the outlet above the water and a nozzle might work well enough. Don’t reduce the outlet size too much though as those pop ups are high flow low pressure and the pressure goes up as you restrict the outlet. The seals are set up for low pressure so too much pressure and you blow the seals and fry the motor so I’d try it with no restriction and maybe have a few nozzles that gradually narrow the outlet and try em till you get the one that gives the most thrust.
    Good luck

NICE feedback! Thanks! I am working on a 3D printed adaptor now that can hold TWO pumps. LOL, I will try that next spring. Will see what happen.

I want to [power an old wind surfer. Any ideas, I have been thinking about installing a trolling motor.

    • @DIYjetboards

@@jamesward7099 if you want to go fast put a jet pump on it if you just want to tootle about at 3/4 mph a trolling motor will work . Check out eBay for kits to convert a paddle board to electric power Bixby is one and sipa boards have an inflatable board that the power plant also pumps up the board. Several other brands but all are fairly slow if you want speed the price jumps to $6k/$7k/$8k and on up.
Remember if you’re gonna use a bilge pump get the biggest you can afford and put some kind of a nozzle on it to increase pressure. Also keep the outlet above the water. Jets are most efficient if they exit above the water. Someone mentioned a scoop to pull water in ..... not really necessary the pump has plenty of suction and anything in the water creates drag and would cancel out any gains you got by pushing more water through the pump.

Jamie, I have a fairly light weight 12v18Ah scooter battery to power the pump. The 3500 gph bilge pump draw around 12amp, it lasts me a little bit more than an hour if I use it all in one shot. I was fishing in a calm lake without crazy wind. It fished for 2-3 hours. Don't forget to bring your paddle! You always need a back up plan :)

Wondering if using two would increase speed (and probably decrease runtime). Along the same line - mount a second one pointing the other direction with a separate control and you've got reverse.

In Texas you would have to register it. I had a $60 dingy out on the lake testing an electric jet drive outboard I was working on and when I came in he said as soon as you put a motor on it it needs to be registered. Gave me a warning but the actual ticket is $500 so check your states boating rules or go commando.

@@DIYjetboards I know it's a late reply, but I really don't get the whole register and licence thing for vessels under 5-10 knots. I know of many large hobby, radio control boats that can hit 60 MPH or more and don't need to be registered.
