Battery Swap Technology in Taiwan

  • You hear about battery swap technology, it sounds great on paper but actually using it in a real world situation is just amazing. In Taiwan, they have battery swap tech deployed and widely used in their electric scooters already. The battery stations are all over the place and rental of the scooters are cheap. Gogoro line of scooters are everywhere and it really does seem to help reduce city pollution. I'm excited to share with you this tech and hopefully, we will get something similar soon in the states. Although, scooters are not really feasible in the states due to things being very far apart distance wise. Enjoy this video!

This would've worked in America in the 50s or 60s. Hear me out, I think the main difference is diversity in USA today. Taiwan and Japan are 97% Chinese and 97.8% Japanese respectively. Crime is practically non-existent in both countries compared to America. If you can think of a better correlation-causation to explain this difference let me know.

@BeatTheBush actually yea race/ethnicity is one of the issues. When you have a country so diverse with new immigrants coming in all the time, it's hard to instill or cultivate a "common culture" where everyone treats each other respectfully and looks out for one another (since every race/ethnic group is going to have their own set of customs and traditions). Another big issue is obviously education

I hope that this kind of feature and mode transportation cam be introduced here in the philippines, the only downside in our country is that there too many thieves here that is why I think that the company would never launch this in our country. this would be really helpful any terms of money saving for commuters. It really is a shame that we cannot try this. I hope this will come true in the future and all thieves can just stop stealing for the better of the country. we have electric bikes here but it is still not enough for this kind of advance feature.

it's quite pricy though :O if you would use it for everyday commute the price is too high in my opinion. If it can be cheaper than public transport it would make sense. Only advantage I see is that you can kind of drive whenever u want instead of waiting for bus/tram/train for like 5-6 mins. Huge disadvantage is that one needs ot be focussed during the drive while on public transport one can do some reading, active listening etc.

Pricy? You can make a quick 10 minute ride for $1-2 usd. Do that 4 times a day and you wont break $150 a month. Pretty reasonable to me as its much cheaper than owning a car or a scooter yourself.

We also have electric bikes, scooters but they never made financial sense for me (unless ur company subsidizes the bikes to be more fit)
Would be interesting to compare the public transport cost (often there is 50-60% discount for frequent users) to those scooters in the location you showed. For sure it depends on how extended the public transport network ist. But I also remember in Shanghai I travelled much cheaper by taking metro and bus than taking scooters or bikes.

a lot of tech items don't make sense for the US, simply because we are way too large geographically with very low population density. in the case of this electric scooter, the range is too low for how far away everything is in the US, we don't have enough population density to make it profitable, and also we have much higher crime than the nation of taiwan, so those scooters will get stolen or vandalized immediately.
