Silverchair (Innocent Criminals) - Tomorrow, Early Demo, 1993

  • From "A New Tomorrow - The Silverchair Story," by Jeff Apter:
"Terry Farrelly, who ran Platinum Studios... contacted the band and offered them some studio time... They'd recorded originals 'How Do You Know?'... and "I Felt Like It"... Including a six-and-a-half-minute long version of 'Tomorrow,' which became their first single and the hit that launched the Silverchair juggernaut."
Obviously, I don't own the rights to this, but at this point, does it matter?

its similar to their final version because it was edited by the radio thingy they won with this song, they shortened it then gave them it to finish properly

@@interstellarbeatteller9306 Whatever the inspiration is doesn’t matter when it comes to the end result. It is the creativity and the artistic side that uses that as a muse or a inspiration or whatever to create something that’s your own. I could play Randy Rhoads’ solos at 15 but couldn’t compose something that magical. I only speak from a musician’s point of view. Daniel Johns is special in the same way Kurt Cobain was, no way technically proficient on the guitar but their songwriting skills at the age the started is what made them special

I grew up during the grunge era, and it felt like everyone and their brother was in a band in high school or even middle school. And they were almost always terrible. But you often heard of some single band of young guys, maybe in your town or possibly one town over who were actually making some good original music. The difference? The lone good band actually practiced, learned about music and took what they were doing seriously. Even in this early demo you can tell that these kids were very knowledgeable about music and were figuring out some novel sounds.

I have their very first demo tape that was sent to 2NUR at Newcastle Uni, who were putting together a compilation CD of local bands at the time. It's accompanied by a signed handwritten letter by Ben's mum (dated 8th Feb 1994), their 'resume' which includes their achievements and live performances to date. Did anybody know that they were 'Finalists in KFC Student of the Year Awards (Entertainer)' 93'? There's a handwritten note at the bottom of the resume that states "please note the boys are all only 14 years old and many live gigs offered have had to be turned down because of licencing laws. We are currently trying to address this problem." The two songs on the demo are "I Felt Like It" and "Won't You Be Mine". Tobin Finnane appears in two photocopied photos and is named as Rhythm Guitarist. I also have a copy of the 2NUR compilation CD which resulted - unfortunately The Innocent Criminals didn't make the final cut. I've got no idea what it's worth these days. I bought it 12 years ago for 500 Australian dollars from the guy who was putting the compilation CD together to whom it was originally addressed. I approached the band's management shortly afterwards and dealt with Caroline (?) who was very protective of it and asked that I not share the songs with anyone else. I asked if they wanted to buy it off me and was told John Watson would call me back. When there was no call, I figured that I was free to sell it, which I still haven't got around to! Does anyone know how many of these demo tapes were made?

This is a really fascinating document, it’s pretty much the genesis of their whole career. Tomorrow’s not even my favorite song, it’s Diorama, then Neon Ballroom as my favorite two albums. And I’m glad they arrived at their later material after the industry pushed them for a certain sound that they were at the time happy to serve up, being young and vulnerable. It chewed through Daniel. Here, though, just dreams and ambitions from children.

Me too. I thought I was the only one affected by it. But, for some reason seeing/hearing Silverchair in their youth makes me incredibly sad. I was a year or two younger than them and had a rough childhood. Early 90's rock (grunge, alternative, insert your preferred colloquialism) was integral to getting me through it. The fact that they were of similar age to myself makes the nostalgia that is already present ever the more identifiable and a feeling of lost youth (innocence?). It's difficult to articulate because on the one hand it reminds me of an age when I was a kid and didnt have adult worries and responsibilities. At the same time, I had a different set of challenges and my childhood was far from charmed, so it is odd that the nostalgia I feel still makes me pine for the time.

I always thought this song needed more lyrics... I love the final cut, but today I find this and there's more lyrics which makes it even more awesome... so my question is, why did they cut so many lyrics from this song?

its the big single i guess they cut it to make it radio friendly

Connor Marshall obviously the known version is an edited for radio. Not too many "6+" minute songs get airplay. The only couple I can think of is Queens "bohemian rhapsody" and the live version of "Free Bird" by lynnard skynnard.

This is an early version of the song. A producer stepped in and “cut the fat” off of it into a more succinct version that would be more listenable to a general audience. Most people don’t have a 6 minute attention span, plus honestly this version needed a lot of editing in terms of structure.
