    sonically, this has to be their best sounding live performances. ive never really found a live performance of theirs that sounded as solid as this one. sometimes ruban will be going a little too crazy on his guitar effects but here everything is so perfectly balance

      Indeed. Its very Black Napkins-ish. I'm happy to see someone taking a page from Zappa that isn't simply arrangement/composition-based. Not that writing an arrangement like Zappa is simple, mind you, it's just that except for his humor, he's not generally known for much else, despite being a fantastically innovative and legendary guitar player in his own right.

      My guy, do you have any idea what scales he's using for the solo, and in what key the song is?

    • @massparody
      @massparody 3 роки тому

      @@ShrimpLord666 I have no clue man I think it's in b minor add9 but half step tuning. Ruban loves using add9's in a majority of his songs. A lot of finger picking too. Some of his chord progressions and shapes I can't even find online tbh. I've even tried looking at his fingers on the fretboard and I've come close to replicating it. I can play this song but nothing ridiculous like jello and juggernauts.

      @@massparody thanks man, been learning music theory but most of the scales like the minor pentatonic just make sound like a classic blues player

      @@ShrimpLord666 the best advice I can give you is too learn a lot of stuff like this by ear and to analyze it a bit (but don't get lost in theoretical stuff). in this case the bass holds one note throughout the solo, which leaves a lot of freedom for ruban, he can choose a lot of different "colours". At least in the beginning you could say that he plays in the lydian mode if you regard the B - bassnote as the root (You could also see the B as the IV-chord of F#-major).
      The way I look at different tonalities is that the major or minor pentatonic makes up the skeleton and the other two notes are the "colour notes" that can be filled in accordingly. In this case you could say he plays the major pentatonic including the sharp 4th and the major 7th, though later in the solo he gets a bit crazier.
      All the the theory aside, try to use your ears to determine what sounds good, maybe sing the melodies before playing them (or at the same time).
