What are your thoughts on the A9III? Is it hype? Is it a revolutionary camera that's going to change the landscape of photography and cameras going forward? Let's hear your thoughts.

Also, the Canon C700FFPL that came out in 2016 had a Global Shutter. Sony's claim to be the "First" does have some caveats.

Features that end up in luxury products today end up in economy models later. I recall when only the tippy top cars had dynamic cruise control and airbags and mood lighting (jfc). Now the cheapest car in America has all three. In much the same way, this sensor will probably become economical and Sony's partners will want a slice of the wafer too.
Add to that, I feel like a marketing push will latch onto Global Shutter the same way it latched onto Mirrorless versus DSLR. Or Apple Silicon. Normies will now suddenly see rolling shutter everywhere and hate it because Japan told them to.

@@16Stopsthe C700 had 2 different models, the FF model had a rolling shutter and the GS PL model was a Super 35 Global Shutter Sensor. Sony had a global sensor in the F55 over 10 years ago. I believe the A9 iii is indeed the first to be both Full Frame and Global Shutter.

Great discussion fellas. I think the Sony A9iii is a great release. But I may be in the minority camp that doesn't thinks this camera is game changing. Mainly because of the price and the small niche that it is meant to serve. Which is crazy to me how Sony chooses to market their cameras. Because I've been hearing more about this camera from influencers than actual working Pro sports and wildlife shooters. I also don't see this tech trickling down anytime soon or the price coming down. This is flagship sports/wildlife tech and it will stay that way for a while.

You guys are awesome. I am an amature photographer on an a6600. There is a feature for increasing dynamic range by bracketing shots; you increase range by taking multiple shots with different exposure compensations...
I bet the A9III could use a similar type of thing to increase dynamic range in non-sport type shooting genres. Especially if you can get the entire bracket in less than 2 or 3 hundredth of a second.

The vast majority of users would never need a global shutter. If you are a working sports or event photographer, the A9iii is a dream machine. But for everyone else, it’s overkill. That $6k would be better spent on a few travel workshops or masterclasses.

49:00 Sony semiconducter is separate from their photography division. There is no reason Sony would not sell this sensor to other companies. Sony is literally in the business of selling sensors. If Sony didnt sell snesors to other companies then other companies would be forced to give business to someone else going forward.
This is common practice. For example LG/Samsung make OLED panels and they sell the latest and greatest OLED panels to Sony but all three companies make OLED TVs and compete with each other.

The A9iii reminds me of what the old Canon 1dmkii was to sports photography back at the time it was dominant. Still wrapping my head around the flash sync at at any shutter speed. But I don't think it will be the "free lunch" I initially thought. Some compromise will happen when shooting at 1/8000 f1.4 during peak daylight. For sure the flash duration at best will be less than 1/8000th, so at say at 1/16000 flash duration, well, that is the 7 stop reduction. Plus syncing electronically at that high shutter speed, the vast majority of the old school strobes will not be able to do.

Hey guys, loved the show once again!
Regarding the grip sharing the same batteries as the camera body, I think it's more versatile. It’s convenient because it doesn't force users to buy additional, different types of batteries, especially since many don't use the grip all the time.
As for the global shutter, I believe it's a great technological achievement. However, I wouldn't call it the next big thing in photography. It won't visibly change photography but will make some aspects easier.
When it comes to using strobes, this advancement doesn't offer anything new for studio work. It might make working on location a bit easier though, as you won’t need as powerful lamps to get strong enough light.
In my opinion, photography reached its last significant revolution with the mirrorless bodies of the 2020 era, which brought amazing AF capabilities and stack backlit sensor technologies that offered better high iSO and higher DR. Any new developments now are likely to make only small changes and won't significantly expand creative possibilities.
    Once again,great show!
    best duo on the youtube!

I ordered the 24-105 F2.8. Par Focal got me. Smokin!! I wonder if that app would work with the zoom on the 24-105? Prolly not but that would be unbelievable. What camera is Brandon shooting on with this talking head? I shoot something for Bas Rutten MMA legend. My focus was doing the same thing yours is. It was making me nuts. I switched my AF speed and Response back to zero. Bas is very animated. He moves around while talking a lot. The last show I just shot was the best (missing intro) with the focus. Thank GOD.

Interesting conversation. Regarding the Sony media cards, CFX-A cards in practice are REALLY fast, as anyone who has seen an A1 buffer clear can attest, I'm sure. Beyond that, as someone who has had pretty much every type of card out there, I can see why, even for NON-cost reasons the CFX-A is preferable to CFX-B. It's smaller, seems to be at least as robust, is fast enough, and importantly for these small cameras doesn't generate nearly as much heat. As Brandon pointed out, a deeper buffer is the better way to skin that cat anyway.

But it is also just a camera that is faster and better in every respect than the previous one. But 120 frames per second means that you invest a lot of time in post-production and you need a sensible work process. But I'm not a professional and it's difficult for me to assess the advantage. But this camera is very good to revive the competition.

How are you having a conversation about overheating when there's no cameras being used by the public? Interesting question, and I expect the posts re 1080p are true. I've not had an opportunity to do this with my ZV1 and RX100M7 yet, but I have done this with smaller Fuji bodies (X100 series, XE series) with a similar setup (ATEM Mini Pro ISO, ATEM Streaming Bridge, dummy batteries, no local record, external mics/mixer feeding ATEM so no on-cam mics). I recommend shading the cameras, as direct sunlight on black bodies will add heat. When I last did this with Fujis, my silver body was fine and the black body wasn't without shading and cool down periods where we intentionally shut it off and switched to the other camera on the ATEM so nobody was the wiser. That wasn't a hot day (upper 60s degF) but it was a clear, bright sunny day. Although the white body Sony cams aren't considered chic, they probably run much better in sunlight under load (am an engineer and white is the color we use for instrument enclosures in field data collection work b/c it doesn't heat up like dark colors). Something black in the sun, full of DSP, running in direct sun, or high temperatures, with plastic/metal, with no heat dissipation techniques gets hot. That is why Class A/AB power amps had heat sinks, larger surface area, fans, fuses, etc, etc, for the past 75+ years. That is why planes have blades kicking OUT heat from the engines, so yes , we 'assume' they will 'overheat' if they stop. That is why Canon cinema cameras have FANS , because without them, they might get hot. Panasonic has a recent ILC with great video specs and no overheating, and it has a fan...hmmmmmmmmmm

@@16Stops Oh and if 300 humans are running in the sun, doing a 5k, 10k, marathon, with no adequate heat dissipation, it's probably ok, to 'assume' there's at least 100 people who will have a heat emergency and not complete the race. That would be huge duhhhhh...

My camera gets very hot, is this normal?
Do not expose the camera to direct sunlight.
Do not put it near a heat source.
      Do not cover it.
Remove HDMI port cover while recording (Important!)

It is common for the camera to be warm to the touch. The camera’s body acts as a heat sink for the processor, allowing heat from the internal parts to escape from the camera.
When capturing video at high resolutions or high frame rates, the camera may become quite hot to the touch as it requires lots of processing power and large amounts of data being written to the SD card very quickly. You will also find that the SD card is hot too. Please remove the HDMI port cover while recoding in order to reduce the temperature inside the camera.
Your camera has been designed to identify conditions of overheating and shuts down when needed. It allows it to achieve high levels of performance, while maintaining good operating conditions for the internal components. Its operating temperature is in accordance with regulation IEC 60950-1 on the safety of information technology equipment.
If the camera gets too hot and needs to cool down, the camera emits a bip indicating that the camera is shutting down. Simply let it sit and cool before attempting to use it again.

These guys talk about a camera, but don't have a clue about it. Are not photographers, just bitching.

💡Idea: Encourage R5C owners to comment requests to have the upcoming Canon remote app also include the R5C! C’mon Canon, how can THE solo shooter cinema camera not have remote app control?! 🤦 Loving the podcast 🙌
