Can't wait for this. I'm an ex Rover mechanic. I've owned 220 turbos 420 820 turbos and up until a few years ago had a maestro turbo. The FDH is a fantastic story!!! A Normal 220 coupe turbo fit a full leather interior Aircon and try to sell in Japan. Sadly it was a flop and they ended up sitting around before rover sold them off cheap. These are very underestimated cars!! The T series engine is fast and easy to work on. Mix that with coupe looks and a targa roof its a perfect recipe 👌
My Dad was a team leader at powertrain in Longbridge. He managed to get me work experience in the quality control department where we would test the torque applied to bolts on the engine and gearbox. They had a jag engine there in an enclosure and they were stress testing. It had been running for 3 days and parts of it were glowing red.
Just run it in. Not been on dyno. Guessing figures. If it wasn't cutting boost up top is where it pulls 😅 he doesn't know that cos he's just run it in 😂😂😂😂
I had a black one back in ‘97 and kept it until ‘01 having had it lowered, blacked the chrome grill and added a Motobuild roof spoiler. It was such a reliable car but the speedo was somewhat optimistic often going off the clock.
a friend had one back in 2003 when i had a 206 dturbo , he was quicker but never had the handling the 206 had or the brakes so he could never really lose me was fun back in the days lol
One of the cheapest quickest cars I ever owned . Bought way back 08 . 1995 220 turbo coupe in nightfire red . Sold it months later as oil seals where going on the turbo . Only paid £800 😂
@@MotorAddicts Not true. The FDH plated cars (the FDH was not a 'model' as many like to profess) were a tiny number of the overall run of 220 Turbo Coupes. You could get a 220 Coupe Turbo on K, L and M plates with no FDH suffix. Only the late registered N plated cars had the FDH plates.
@@MotorAddictsfdh were the jap exports. ( nobody knows if they got there) Even has the jap 3rd tail light. Would have had a flair too and a jap style rear number plate holder along with kmph clocks and Japanese writing on the sun visor etc
I had a green one, i melted the valves, due to over adjustment on a valve between the inlet and brake servo 😂 Nice cars. I got a stage 2 golf r with 410bhp and it drowns terrible, im 43 and i love it, just aswel i only drive 10 miles a day 😂
What happend whit the white vauxhall nova whit 2.0 c20xe I'm interested from the car ,you have video whit official gassed and there you say its for sale
It's a Honda concerto underneath, shares loads of honda parts. They even come with a d series. The rover 600 come with a 3 honda engines. Basically an accord.
I had one for years it was ok standard but when I modded it . The ecu didn’t like it needed on omex ecu boost cut at 14.4 Blew it up top end a rod through the block
I have a better condition example with the boost cut removed, short ratio 620ti gears, type b diff, lightweight flywheel 1 bar of boost, so if you want to do a video and really get a feel for this car let me know, iv owned the car 13 years and only driven it hard and it's never let me down.
Had a 220 gti then a 216gti honda twin cam, due to me havin a crx without power steering, and the rover did. That 216 twin can was a gorg motor due to the honda engind. What an engine? U could hear how well made it was when u got on the loud pedal.. god she went v well and loved 7,200 rpm change ups!! I ended up part exing for an even rared fiat bravo HGT 2 litre twin can inline 5 cylinder 20 valve with 154bhp..%what an engine❤❤
It's definitely not 300bhp, might make 200 at the wheels on a good day, assuming it has a T28 pulsar turbo and 12psi, the inlet manifold is just standard off an N/A M series, the "Built" gearbox with torsen diff came standard, best PG1 box for these was from a 620ti with shorter ratios.
A lad I used to knock about with (late 90’s) had one of these. Not sure if it was an FDH, we just knew it as a coupe turbo. The thing was rapid. Like you, I’ve not seen one of these on the road in years and years. Great video 👌🏼 Ps….. Keep hold of it and get a Nova. Sorted 👍🏼😂
? Its a Honda underneath.. has a Honda platform and looks close to an accord/ civic coupe. The 4 doors were a Honda concerto.. Hence you could get these with a Honda d series. This era of rover was Honda owned, hence this model was destined for Japan ( fdh) the 600 had 3 Honda engine options including a h23 Bmw wanted rover, as they stole the mini and said it was there design. Mini r50/3 was 100% rovers design. Looks nothing like an e36. Looks like a 90s Honda.
You’re right about the Honda underpinnings of a lot of nineties Rovers. It was a joint venture that started in the eighties, rather than Honda owning Rover though. BMW definitely saw Rover as up and coming competitors and wanted to eliminate them. I actually own an R53 Mini and it’s a great car.
They weren't rubbish, the t series were mega reliable. And the platform is Honda. They got a bad name due to being a grandad car, wood dash etc. And the k series destroyed there name badly.
@@craigconey9971 The Calibra and Cavaliers were underrated and ignored cars but they could hammer most Cosworths and for far less pricing. I loved my silver DTM kitted Calibra, I'd have another tomorrow if I could.
Think there is some confusion around the engine in the vid - the 220 didn’t have a K-series it was T-series which was basically a blown M16 engine in which the bottom end was based on the O-series - it’s actually a very strong motor….aside from the oil leaks…

Cool story bro

The MG Maestro turbo was absolutely bonkers 😂😂😂
it was my favourite car back in 95, it spanked everything on the road, accel😊eration was brilliant
I had n149 fdh
The guy in the m140i didn't no it was a race 😂
Pulls really well, he's hitting boost cut at about 4k 😂, that engines getting ready to go bang 😂
Just run it in. Not been on dyno. Guessing figures. If it wasn't cutting boost up top is where it pulls 😅 he doesn't know that cos he's just run it in 😂😂😂😂
I wanted one of them as a kid. Even after all these years the styling stands out. Great video stu
I put a 320bhp tomcat engine in my 214si called it Jaky. Loved that car !!
Lovely seeing an old tomcat don't see many about. Needs to turn the boost down though
As other's have said get a proper ecu on it before the bleed valve helps it blow it self up.
Tomcat. Fastest production car of it's time
I had 9 220 coupe turbos over the years. Loved them. Sadly the last one I owned was a series 1 in black with cream interior, got smashed by a Skoda.
I had a black one back in ‘97 and kept it until ‘01 having had it lowered, blacked the chrome grill and added a Motobuild roof spoiler. It was such a reliable car but the speedo was somewhat optimistic often going off the clock.
Do love a 220 shame how rare they are now because there are really nice cars.. top vid from stu 👍
Thanks 👍
I really liked these back in the day

I had a 220 Turbo 12 years ago.. was quite modded, and an absolute beast. Sounded just like this one, I miss that car 🥲🥲
Nice classic Rover
always liked these, get a decent modern standalone ecu and a good mapping session and it would be a completely different animal.
One of the cheapest quickest cars I ever owned . Bought way back 08 . 1995 220 turbo coupe in nightfire red . Sold it months later as oil seals where going on the turbo . Only paid £800 😂
Now they r worth thousands lol
Slow car but nostalgic none the less
Was working at Rover on this production line always wanted one of these new them at the Tomcat on the production line.
My brother used to have one of those 220 turbos, The number plate was N223FDH, Happy days.
They all came with FDH plates

I had a tomcat version of this DONT know what it meant but it was so fun
thanks for another great vid,,, a friend had one of these and i remember it was quick back then with the turbo
more icon is please 🙏
My mate had a Tomcat and it was quick as , seen 150 down M42

Rover 800 Schnell? In England they call it 'fastback'.
British Architect
😂
Used 2 love this advert.
Long live Rover
😂 Love these cars... I also used to work with this guy years back! What a blast from the past 😂👌🏻
Love these old school videos, I had a gold one of these back in mid nighties, wish I had it now, keep the old school coming guys 😊
Still a great looking car, really like it.
It really is!
I miss these

Wat a weapon ❤
Rover 220 turbocoupéは日本では見た事がないですよ、
外観はHONDAのインテグラレイに似ていますね?
運転が楽しそうな車に感じました😊素晴らしい動画を見られて嬉しいですね

Only good for 12psi standard
Legend!!!!
Had 1 of these in the same colour 😍

Liked these back in the day but sorry, that isn't worrying even a stock m140i
Is that the Thanet highway?
I had a 216 GTI back in the day but dreamt of owning a bright green 220 Tomcat Turbo
Hey, my dad had a 216 Gti. Way quicker than anyone expected, they were 130bhp vs 112bhp for the XR3i of the day if I remember right.

Very enjoyable as always 👍
the novas gotta have a redtop in it come on 😂
Rover could produce decent motors when they wanted to.
💯
I used to call em rover tomcats
So did Rover - think it was the project name when developing it
Not seen one for years
Turn it down to 12psi, no boost cut and you won't blow the engine
Lovely car but that's not pushing out anywhere near 250bhp! More like 180?
What are you basing that on? They produced 200 as stock standard
Looks very e36 bmw
That’s why BMW bought Rover. To remove them.
Looks nothing like e36

No way has he beat a m140i
I don’t think he knows what he’s on about
Sorry for the jokes lol. But hes lying lol. Lovley cars great video everyone liked them back in the day
He seems a bit dense do you really want to sell it to him?
M140 i 😂😂😂😂😂😂
That’s not 300bhp😂
Not even 200bhp that 😂
Clown
I know there rubbish but still like them

I hated these things, I thought they were pug ugly and I bought the superior Vauxhall Calibra 4x4 turbo
Good cars my brother has a cav turbo in dark blue and a cav gsi 2000

He’s done a lot in the car since it’s only just run in. Needs a stand alone ecu on it
My mate had the 216 eas quick ment to have a muegan head on it not surd thats true or spelt right
misfiring bad
It's just boost cut. The guy is trying to run more than 1 bar on a standard ECU.
