  • A feature on the restoration of my Rover 800 Vitesse, which was accident damaged in 2019 and needed lots more work than originally planned!
    I’ve loved the 800 since my Dad had one back in 1992, so it was great to buy, repair and restore this metallic Oxford Blue Rover 800 Vitesse Sport Fastback. In this video I share the highs and lows of rescuing this 90’s executive hatchback, which is now a long-term member of my collection.

    I absolutely loved my 97 vitesse fastback. 4 years of trouble free motoring. I up graded the brakes to EBC green and groved and drilled disc. In 4 years all I every had to pay was a new exhaust and air con regas. Best car I ever owned. Brought it when it was 2 years old of a company director for 4k. Wolf in sheep's clothes. Twice I had 150mph out of it. Should never had sold it. R.I.P P25LJW. Loved the colour. Zircon blue, almost looked silver from a distance.

      @@cornishcarcollectors A gentleman from my town,Veroia ( Greece) , had a Rover 800 Ti , 2.0 Litres.- gasoline engine. I saw it in my friend's workshop. It was in excellent condition ! Without dents or scratches.. The paintwork was your famous British Racing Green ! Those cars were at least a decade ahead of their era !

      Thanks for the comment, it’s great to know you think the 800 turned out well. I will take a small bit of credit for ‘project management’, plus doing the electrics and interior, but the big “pat on the back” goes to MK Bodyshop, TorpointMOT and Andy Hocking Mechanic.

    My friend Gary had 820 Vitesse, we used to take it to the British Grand Prix and sleep in it on the night between qualifying and race day. It was a lovely car. At the time l had a MG Montego Turbo which had been modified, and would piss on 2.8i capris and give a standard cossie a good run for its money. Love the vid.

    Seeing those spare parts collection photos reminded me of my own Rover - I had an 820 Vitesse Fastback, reg. R887MOJ (MOJ I believe was a Rover-owned & registered vehicle) - it survived but unfortunately was written off a few years ago. Mine had the all-leather interior, no Recaros unfortunately, but was super comfy and was impressively quick with that T-Series T16i turbo engine.

      Thanks for the comment and glad it brought back some memories. I believe the 800 Vitesse with the full leather was called the Lux... I could be wrong. Nice specification, but as you say there's something about those Recaro seats! I enjoy hearing from people who have owned these cars in the past and their experiences. Thanks for watching.

    I had a Rover 820 SI F plate as my second car. Then a Rover 820 SLI on a P plate. Then I had a the Rover Vitesse on a T plate. First Rover was scrapped when the gearbox went. Second one, sold it before it was going to fail a MOT. Third one was scrapped when the head gasket failed. Great cars but had issues on each one due to gearbox’s failing.

    Thanks for your Wonderful review of your Beautiful Rover 800 Vitesse , I have owned 3 Rover 800's here in New Zealand all Japanese imports they are a very Special and under rated car . I currently own a one owner 1999 Rover 623 SLi New Zealand New model which is also a wonderful car but sometimes I dream about the big brother Rover 800. Brings back memories.... Mine best one was a 95 Nordic Blue saloon. Tuned to around 240-250 bhp it would regularly hold its own with my friends 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth.
    They jacked up the suspension at factory to make the headlights meet standards in other countries. I dropped mine nearly 2 inch on bikstein coilovers and had it 4 wheel aligned.... It was a different car, looked 10x better, handled 3x better yet was just as comfy! Had it for 5years and did 70k in it.
    When it got terminal I bought a Nissan 200sx S14a to replace it.

      What was the upgrades to achieve that power

    • @johnshaw8013
      @johnshaw8013 2 місяці тому

      @GrahamPreston-jw9df intercooler, induction, exhaust, de-cat, injectors, fuel pump, and a homemade ball relief valve for the waste gate to adjust boost. From memory ot ran about 17psi.
      I've still got the stainless Janspeed (from demon tweeks) exhaust and de-cat that I made.
      It also had an MG mesh front end conversion bigger brakes and was on lowered koni shocks and springs.
      Also still got two sets of wheels, 16s & 17s in mint condition but needing tyres. Also got heads and Turbos spare.
      Mine was nordic blue.
      Got pics somewhere.

    • @johnshaw8013
      @johnshaw8013 2 місяці тому

      @GrahamPreston-jw9df it was fast, Keeping my mates Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 honest, but it would eat diff bearings for fun.
      Because they fitted shitty bearings from factory. Deep Grove balls instead of tapper rollers that would take the thrust load. From memory they were skf6008, and they couldn't take the thrust load developed on the helical gears with the increased torque.
      A car that could have been so much more with an extra 10% spent on it in production.
      It's decendant, the Rover 75 V8 was just the same, hampered by the same accountants!

    I know exactly what you mean about 'my seat in the back' - exactly the same with myself and my brother although i always sat behind the driver! My dad owned a 820 SLi Saloon in Tahiti Blue, and swapped it for a Vitesse Saloon in Flame Red. I grew up saying i would own one - alas in June this year it came true, obtaining a Flame Red Vitesse Fastback! Exactly the same feedback, "Dont see many of these on the road now!", "i remember when my dad used to have one of these" etc at the car shows! Great watching these videos on the cars, thank you for the great content!

    Still love the look of these. I had one about 23 years ago. Loved the way it drove and, of course, the looks. But boy was it a terrible car. Sticking valves, gearbox rebuild, CV joint failures, power steering fluid leaks. I always carried two sticks. One to keep it from jumping out of 5th gear and one to prop up the boot lid after the struts failed. Even the exterior door handles fell off. Eventually I just had enough and vowed to buy Japanese from then on. Got a Galant which never skipped a beat. Such a shame. It really should have been a good car, and they did wonders with the facelift, but I guess that's Rover for you!

    Highly appreciate the great amount of love and care you put into this masterpiece of an automobile. OMG, how precious, elegant and special this car was when launched. It was one of my dream cars. The great attention to details that was characterized by the exquisite use of wood and leather as well as the way they configured them splendidly was a great sign of how luxurious interior this car had. However, I missed the wood panel on the upper left side of the dashboard which in your case is covered by leather instead. The ergonomic L shaped design for the interior door handles was and still my personal preference for how interior door handles should be. Conservative yet elegant appearance of the exterior reveals unique presence that was marked by the heritage of the English recipe for luxurious automobile design. I was expecting a prosperous future for this brand but unfortunately everything went utterly wrong. Thank you so much and keep up the great dedication.

    Great videos. Always look forward to them. We share one common trait; a long commute to work. Mine... 71 miles each way, most all interstate from 3850ft elevation to 800ft elevation (mountains of West Virginia, USA). Unfortunately, the cars I really admire like this Rover, many MG's, Citroen's, etc are unobtainable here. My current "Modern Classic" commuter is a 2004 W211 Mercedes E320 estate.... The current vehicle environment in the US is SUV and pickup trucks.. ugh. Not at all for me.
