    The theft of used cooking oil was more common about 10 years ago when DIY biodiesel was a hot fad, but it's still definitely a thing. It can be used in diesel engines with minimal processing. Given the cost of fuel these days, I am surprised this isn't more widespread.

    17:00 Galadriel actually does have a character arc, her whole story has been her inner battle between her ambition to be an elven queen with a kingdom of her own; vs her wisdom. She continues to struggle with these two sides of herself until finally she rejects the ring & returns West (before due to her ambition & arrogance got her banished from Valanor--even when all elves were welcomes & the Noldor forgiven for the kin slaying)

      Thank you for saying this. Amazon and the showrunners have decided to erase the already existing characters and completely rehash them to suit their own fanfic cravings. Then have the gull to preach every given moment how they are "referencing the text" and "going back to the source material", while *everything* we have seen so far from the show has been the literal and seemingly intentional exact opposite of all that.

      That culminates in the LotR trilogy though, so I guess the question is more related to specifically within RoP. I can't think of many "impactful" decisions that Galadriel specifically made in the period of time that the series seems to span... Maybe one of the closing points for the arc could be the foundation of Lothlorien? Though I honestly can't even remember when that takes place in time.

    A cameo of Ian McKellen as Gandalf would be cool, but if they are staying true to the Tolkien world, we won't see him as if I remember correctly, the Istari (or wizards as we know them) were only sent to middle earth in the 3rd age. Obviously they already existed in some other form as they are part of the Maiar who actually shaped the world, but the "old men" weren't around in the 2nd age.

    • @hkpew
      @hkpew 2 роки тому +6

      Exactly. There's no evidence that Gandalf was seen in Middle Earth in any form before the 3rd age. I suppose it might not be impossible to concoct an acceptable story line which would bring Gandalf into the story, at least in a cameo. And it would allow them to use a different actor in place of Ian McKellan, since there's no reason to believe he would take the form of an old man in that time. But he also wouldn't be going by the name Gandalf so it would be hard for the audience to even know that it wasn't just a new, previously unheard of character.

    • @CharlieQuartz
      @CharlieQuartz 2 роки тому +9

      While the Istari we know the most were sent to Middle-earth in the Third Age, the Blue Wizards Alatar and Pallando arrived in the Year of Dread (when the One Ring was forged in the Second Age) to quell Sauron's influence east of Mordor. The old man who seems to emerge from the meteorite impact could be one of them.
      That said, I think they're going to alter the lore and Meteor Man will be revealed as Olórin, known to the Men of Arnor as Gandalf. In the trailers he meets Hobbits and is guided by them, which would thematically fit with his fondness for them in the later story.

    Even without them keeping track of the news and such, Brandon and Dan are saying the EXACT same points Tolkien fans have been (concernly) saying for months if not years:
    1) Why didn't Amazon buy and adapt the Sil? Why spend so much money for just the Appendices?
    2) every season should time jump so we can have a different story or plot every season yet still keep our elven characters witnessing it all.
    3) after watching all the trailers "but what is the story?" I've been saying this since February, but even more so since the comic con trailer dropped.

    • @iThinkergoiMac
      @iThinkergoiMac 2 роки тому +5

      1 - You can't buy something someone isn't willing to sell. The Tolkien Estate hasn't signaled (that I'm aware of) that the rights to The Silmarillion are something they want to sell
      2 - This would be great for use diehard fans, but a big turnoff for anyone casually interested who wants to watch the show, plus a logistical nightmare for Amazon. As a fan, I don't like the time compression, but as a person I get it. Giving persistent, relatable (therefore Human and not Elf) characters throughout the seasons is going to be key for widespread success, and it needs to be widespread success in order for Amazon to profit off it. They're making this show for the masses, not for us. It looks like they're going to try to give some satisfaction for the diehard fans too, but it won't be made *for* us.
      3 - Isn't that the point of trailers? Show how great it looks, but not give away the story? It looks like a lot of it will focus on Galadriel and someone from Numenor, with a smattering of Harfoots (proto-hobbits) thrown in for good measure. Oh, and the guy from the meteor. Who knows?=

    • @demoui7
      @demoui7 2 роки тому +7

      @@iThinkergoiMac 1 - Then they should've adapted what they actually owned. But they were terrified of remaking LOTR (and rightly so).
      2 - This is an excuse for not trying. Game of Thrones was watched by millions of people who never read the books, more people watched GOT that hadn't read ASOIAF than people who did. They could've very easily done what HOTD is currently doing with time jumps and they would have had a major advantage over that show, seeing as most of the protagonists in S.A. were Elves. So not a lot of recastings. But since Amazon basically wanted Game of Thrones, they thought that the majority of watchers would be people who didn't read Tolkien. How wrong they were!
      3 - No, the purpose of a trailer is to provide a preview of the show's/film's story/plot without revealing spoilers. Nobody gives a shit if someting 'looks' great if the story is not interesting or, in ROP's teasers case, non-existent.

    The problem with adding the wizards (Istari) is that they did not arrive until the 3rd age. They were in Valinor prior to that but not known under the same name. Gandalf was in Valinor and was called Olorin. Him being in Middle Earth in the 2nd Age wouldn't work.

    • @bluemoondm8629
      @bluemoondm8629 2 роки тому

      This may be mostly true, but the two Blue Wizards arrived in something like SA 1600, the year that Sauron created the One Ring. So blue Wizards would be lore friendly to some degree.. though they are screwing up the timeline so much to fit into a few years that they likely have thrown out most of lore friendly time keeping anyways.

    Dan is wrong about saying Saruman wasn't a villian yet. Saruman was always a villian since we first saw him, its just no one knew it, except maybe Galadriel. Gandalf trusted him completely but he was still a villian. He delayed the council as much as he could from going after the Necromancer so he could secretly search for the ring. His treachery goes back centuries.
    That said, his players have no reason to not trust Saruman.

      I was reading up on the rights purchasing and it sounds like they used the option to consult with the Tolkien estate. Perhaps the appendices from LotR have enough links to the second age that it makes sense to draw the same through-lines as the Akallabeth? 🙃🤷🏻‍♂️

    My concern with RoP is that the actors and directors have consistently said that they are trying to bring Tolkien's world up to speed with modern times. I'm concerned that this show will not have a good story and everything will be about THE MESSAGE. I'm predicting that Galadriel will be another Rey. She'll automatically be good at everything, have no arc, and have no character development. I want Galadriel to be a fair and wondrous lady, not a macho warrior. I find the very image of Galadriel wearing armor to be very disrespectful to the elegant character Tolkien created. Tolkien's work is very traditional, but Amazon is making it progressive and that is not faithful to his world.

    The second age can be resume in 4 mayor events, the rise of numenor, the forge of the rings(sauron deception), the fall of numenor and the war of the last alliance, but like Brandon fear they made changes to appeal the broader audience, thats why they compressed the timelines to not have big timejumps and fit everything in one single timeline, also thats the reason galadriel is the lead, because people recognize her not because she was that involved during that age, the best think to do as a fan of the books is to see the show with low expectations and just expect a decent show. By the way i think most people will like at least at the beginning with visual aspect of the show.

    So, for the Gandalf and Wizards discussion, here's a small deep dive:
    The Istari (Wizards) for the most part didn't show up until the Third Age (TA). The Blue Wizards did come in the second age, but they pretty quickly disappear to the far east (Harad and possibly beyond). So, for that reason alone, I will be very annoyed if Gandalf shows up. He doesn't come to Middle Earth until about TA 1000 and is the last wizard to show up, so for him to show up roughly 1000 years too early really breaks things. They also arrive as old men, though they do age, albeit very slowly. LotR mentions this a couple times, specifically when Gandalf comes back to The Shire almost 17 years after the events of the first chapter. Frodo notices he's looking older.
    So, no Gandalf. I don't think they'd even be allowed to, as part of Amazon's agreement is they can't contradict anything written. However, I could see them giving a small nod to the diehard fans if you meet a Maia named Olorin, as that's the Maia incarnated as Gandalf. We see the Trees and stuff in the trailers, and those existed before the First Age, so it's possible we could see Olorin in passing.
    Numenor falls near the end of the Second Age, but there's still a good bit before Sauron is overthrown (for the first time), which is the transition to the Third Age.

    Thank you for admitting you aren’t the biggest fan of Tolkien’s writing (I’m really surprised since you and Tolkien are in the same tier of Epic storytellers of humanity in my book) I would like to make a suggestion: I think you should read the Unfinished Tales and the Silmarillion before talking more about the the 1st and 2nd age of middle Earth and I think a lot of your questions will be answered without having to speculate much. Loved your commentary on the show just thought I’d offer advice on reading up on the Lore a bit.

    Your works are currently the art that most moves me. And it is likely to stay that way. It has entertained me. Inspired me. Made me stronger, wiser, and more empathetic. And it is a significant part of what has allowed me to finally do something that I have wanted to do for decades.
    For the last 20 years, I have written roughly 1 million words for friends and family, with the simple purpose of earning adequate skill at storytelling. I honed my writing, and even ultimately benefited from deep, painful personal struggles, so that I could finally tell a specific short story. It complements and builds up one of your favorite films. And, incidentally, it also showcases many examples of genuine, loving masculinity displayed in a variety of ways.
    Further, I feel it sets a very high bar for what respectful, quality “fanfiction” should strive to be. Upholding a beloved work. Understanding it, valuing it, and forgiving any supposed flaws. Contributing a modest addition to someone else’s great legacy. Underscoring and deepening the arc of an already beloved character. Teaching the same positive lessons with the same noble themes, in a slightly different way. Honoring the work, the creator of that work, and all those who have come to love it for what it is.
    Your work proves you don't shy away from facing darkness and tragedy. You have shown us your deep insights into the pain and struggles of so many, including people suffering from terrible mental health issues. You even explored Dissociative Disorder in a way that I know, from the personal experience of a true friend, to be quite believable and accurate. Seeing how deeply you care, I know that my little story will be somewhat painful for you. But you will come away proud for having forged through to the end. And perhaps, you might come away even stronger than you have already, correctly, seen yourself to be.
    I strove to keep the story focused, purposeful, limiting it to just 22,000 words. It may not be perfect, but it certainly tries to be. I hope you will consider giving it a read. Based on what you’ve shown everyone of your true self (behind your hilarious outward persona), I believe you will approve of these efforts. You may be uplifted and proud for having put forth the time to read it. And you will then enjoy going back to watch one of your favorite trilogies yet again, perhaps getting even more out of the experience.
    The tale is humbly posted, amidst countless others, on fanfiction.net, under the title “The Children of Rohan,” by WillDreamer.

    Honestly I've just got no hope for rings of power, they clearly don't care about Tolkien's works and are just using the name. It's just so full of lorebreaking stuff that I don't see any value in watching the show as a fan of Tolkien's works.
    Even outside of that the writing seems pretty bad, like if that's the kind if dialogue they want to display in the trailers then I don't even want to know how bad the actual series will be. Like remember that "you haven't seen what I've seen" "I've seen my fair share" "you haven't seen what I've seen" argument between Galadriel and Elrond? Yeah they thought that was so good it had to be in the trailer.
    If the trailers, interviews and everything are just a massive misdirection and the actual show is awesome then great, I'll happily say I was wrong, but I don't think that's the case.

    Love listening to both you guys! I mostly agree with everything Dan said about the possibilities for the show... However, I am really worried about a young Gandalf cameo. 2 reasons: according to Tolkien lore, the Wizards were only sent to Middle-earth in the Third Age, and secondly Gandalf would have too much influence on the plot, I feel. There are signs and hints that Gandalf might appear in the show, so... The showrunners have said that they have truncated thousands of years of Tolkien's history of the Second Age into say a matter of 50-100 years, because then the human characters can star in every season.

    Hi, I completely agree with the takes about the original LoTR movies and TWOT show.
    About Glorfindel and Tom Bombadil i understood that their role doesn't align with the story at all, they are some uber powerful beings that for some reason don't fight with the good guys... In the books i took them as a part of this mystic world of Tolkien but with such a short time in the movies i saw no point in showing such beings if you are not going to explain or use them properly to advance the plot.
    What i am worried with the Rings of Power is that from what i've seen they are trying to "modernize" Tolkien (even said by the same actors/producers if i'm not mistaken) and this is a very bad sign for me because i always considered works like Tolkien's as ageless, i don't want s.XXI ideologies or activism in a fantasy show about medieval fantasy. And also, in relation to this, that they may surrender the plot or the story to these alien themes. IMHO TWOT show did this, and i didn't like it one bit, specially how underdeveloped Rand, Perrin and Matt are, while wasting 1,5 chapters worth of time in a random warder none cares about.
    About Galadriel i fear they will get too focused in the warrior-princess trope and lose the wisdom and intelligence that the character had in Tolkien's works. Hardfoots are just there to be a fanservice for the people who recognise LoTR because of the hobbits (the other races are more standard ones) i can understand it but i don't like it, second age isn't about hobbits there's plenty of things to tell to waste time on fanservice of the people who barely watched the films.
    I'm not specially excited and i'm not liking the promotion interviews where the actors act like they're being brave or gound-breaking and also for how Amazon is "gifting" all possible reviewers and influencers with exclusive content because imo it severely affects to the impartiality of the later reviews.

      Ya i don't understand trying to make it modern either. Like, what the heck. It's a different world. Thousands of years before the movies, so why try to make it match with our world's current views/movie stereotypes by putting in more people of color and women and getting rid of white men.

      There's reasons for why Glorfindel and Tom don't 'fight' for a side (and yes, their characters would really have just confused the wider audience).
      Tom is. . .essentially a leftover god? Demi-god? That. . .isn't allowed to get involved if I remember? And is, kinda choosing to die with the world he knows as the age passes onto the next one? Sure, he could keep the ring and never be tempted by it, but he chose to live in his creation and therefore can't/isn't allowed to meddle in the wider creation because of it?
      Glorfindel does. . .a lot of behind the scenes work, and seems to be more watching and waiting for where he can be most effective. If I remember he was given sort of a glimspe of precognition and there's probably some sort of balancing act and making sure things go like they need to. . .he's also just. . . very powerful in his own right.
      Either on screen would have, sadly, been confusing for the wider audience.

    If it sucks, I can ignore it, which is fair. If it's great, well hurrah, a great Tolkien adapation. It's really a ignore-or-win scenario. But yeah the wizards appeared in Middle-earth old in 2000 T.A., and before that they were more youthful when they were living in the Undying Lands as demi-gods, or Maia (same origin as Balrogs actually, hence bigger impact of the fight in Moria), and even went by different names. If they were present during the Second Age, they'd have been able to prevent the fall of Numenor. Their purpose was to oppose Sauron in the Third Age. Gollum already had the One Ring by the time they were wizards/Istari.

      Fairy tales, folklore, and Narnia are all connected to the real world. Tolkien famously detested allegory and created his own world, self-contained, with no connection to the real world.
