An absolutely beautiful Soo Line Engine & Caboose you're lucky to see that on the move. I also enjoyed seeing the Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Great Western equipment, not to mention the DM&IR = Duluth Messabe & Iron Range RR.
I went up there a few years ago and it was hard to believe how g those are!!! Got to see a loco and 2 cars on to and they looked tiny. Thanks for showing us around!! JT from Cedar Rapids.
If you know where to go up the hill and down you'll find Duluth a fantastic little city. Search Skyline Parkway and drive it from the west from Becks to Seven Bridges Road. Don't loose track as you go past a busy route going up and down the hill. Stop and get out of your vehicle there is a lot to see, don't forget to read the many markers. Climb Enger Tower and at the east end take a jump into The Deeps, ok at least walk around at The Deeps. There are a couple abandoned train tunnels so have a peak.
Nice! Born and raised in Duluth, neat to see areas so familiar from above. When I was a kid we never walked much past those baseball fields (Wheeler Field) on the tracks cause we were scared of getting in trouble!
They are reopening passenger service between Duluth and Minneapolis next year I believe. I currently live in Minneapolis but have considered moving up to Duluth, or just outside the city. It is a beautiful area.
Nice footage. At 8:47, there actually is a boat being loaded. You can see the white colored unloading boom swung out on the south side of the dock. It gives a good idea of how large the dock is if a 700' freighter can hide behind it.
“It’s Bell Time”. I’m thinking 🤔 the Wasps are either Deaf and/or Dead by now. 😬👍 Always Fun to Travel and See something New. Thanks for Sharing, Red. 👍🙏
Hi. Red I like the new intro. The only thing I think it is 2 Bells to long. 😮. I'm going to go back and count the bell rings. I like that showtime. Keith
That's amazing how many ore cars are on that train. It would scare the daylights out of me to pull a train onto that dock. Steel girders can only hold so much weight after an extended time. 😮😮😮
Duluth is really cool. I have video on my channel of that ore dock in operation. I didn't know they still used the gravity only portion of that dock. I also have a video posted of that type of dock in operation in Marquette MI. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing views of the ore docks! I also loved seeing the big machine in operation at the Two Harbors taconite pile. I guess the NSSR is a 2-train operation since there's a long stretch between 2 trains? Sorry you didn't get to see any ore trains on the move but at least you got a reminder of home with all those ex-CNW dash 8's
Thanks fallingup90! That machine a t Two Harbors was cool. Didn't notice it at first while shooting the video. Glad you pointed out the fact on the ex CNW power👍
I’ve seen those hopper coal trains in Duluth,we even drove past some on the way to our hotel there, saw a picture of steam being the team hauling some of the cars. I also went on a train ride on the SOO engine past the depot and I explored as saw some engines in the depot too I believe. I was also on the dome passenger car. It was fun there at Duluth.
Oh my GOD I want that bell! You need a train horn! Awesome shots of the harbour. Those are huge taconite pits, massive! The drone shots are just fantastic buddy, don't worry about it being the weekend. The birds eye view is perfect. I hope you had a great vacation. Love the video looking out from the back of the NSSR. Great cameo at the beginning of this video as well. Pretty cool shots of all the engines at the museum. All in all a great video Sir! Cheers from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks Phantom! I think I'm pushing it enough with the neighbors on the bell. A horn may be a bit too much. The NSSR is well worth the money for a tour. Have a good one👍
This is a splendid video of the Canadian National's (former Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad) taconite ore docks in Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota, Red! The drone footage of both locations was wonderful. Too bad you were not able to see that taconite boat being loaded at the Two Harbors. I have seen several videos of Great Lakes ore boats being loaded at the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad's ore loading dock in Marquette, Michigan. I have not been in the Duluth, Minnesota/Superior, Wisconsin area in close to 46 years. In 1977 my wife and I took a vacation to the Upper Peninsula with our three-year-old and one-year-old sons. We also stopped in Marquette, Michigan. I was also in Marquette, Michigan on a tour with the Chicago & North Western Historical Society. That tour to Marquette was a bus trip step up by the CNWHS for members.
Thanks Thomas! That's a very interesting place around Duluth. 3M products originated in Duluth. To see the ore docks up close is jaw dropping, there massive. Getting the drone up over the open pit mine in action would have been nice too. Maybe next time!
Red, so awesome!!! Next time, you have to go to Proctor on top of the hill. At one time, it was the largest sorting yard in the world (war time). They used up all the rich raw ore and now only taconite pellets are left to make steel (along with the limestone). At one time, there were six ore docks extending into the lake...which, is really the St. Louis River at that point.
Hope you get to ride the scenic railway, and maybe you can get a cab ride in the SOO LINE GP30❗, and theres a D M&IR 2-8-8-4 on display somewhere, i saw it waaay back in the 1950s❗
The yellow cars were side-discharged Diffco Dumpers for ballast, rock, limestone. The entire side of that car tips up via hydraulic arms…impressive in action.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 well.....thats the one i saw!, it was in Duluth, i had no idea there was another one at Two Harbors. I had to be about 5 or 6 years old when we went to Duluth as a side trip on a family vacation waaaaay back in the 1950s.
Quite a tour! Did you get to ride on the upper level in the Zephyr Dome Car? I believe they were originally created for the California Zephyr; so luxurious to be a train passenger in those days. I couldn’t figure out how the loading of the taconite ore would work. Looks very complex. Did you hear where the steel mills are that all that ore goes to? How great to see the bright colors of the SOO locomotive and caboose. I often see old SOO hoppers on Virtual Rail Fan videos. All faded and worn but still working, not totally obliterated by graffiti vandals. VRF Grab Bag videos point out the old RR names as often as you do. They call them Fallen Flags.
Thanks Betty! Yes, we did ride in the dome part of the Zephyr. What a great way to travel and see your surroundings. Looks to me like they dump the railcars near the docks and then conveyors run the ore to the boats. Not sure on the nearest steel mills.
You missed the point of the topographical nature of getting materials from the mines to the docks-there’s a 300ft difference in the terrain so when the trains get to the dock area, it drops 300 ft! That’s why DM&IR RR locos all had dynamic braking systems…SD9, -18s, -24s, n -38s! Their sister RR was the Eastern Joliet w/its funky colors of orange n yellow. The 2 RRs often exchanged loco equipment.
Hi Red thanks for the great video. I was just curious when you’re in Montour how is it determined which track is number one and which one is number two
There was a lot to take in at that museum. I saw the 4-8-8-2 steamer. They had the wheels up just enough to run the drive wheels with an electric motor.
