The Cure Created the PERFECT 80s Pop Song | #1 in Our Hearts | Professor of Rock

  • In the 80s, many new wave bands hit the top spot on the charts, Duran Duran, Berlin, the Human League, Aha, Blondie Culture Club etc. But how The Cure never did, is a head scratcher. They created so many luscious and hook laden classics, it was disarming. Songs like In-between days, the LoveCats, Boys Don't Cry, The Caterpillar, Let's Go To Bed and of course Just like Heaven, which in my opinion is a perfect pop song.

Hey Music Junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest songs and the greatest artists of all time. If you are all about the music, subscribe below also if you want to help us continue to curate the history of these artists and their songs click on our patreon link below It's time for another episode of #1 in our hearts where we celebrate a song that should've been a number one hit but for various reasons it came up short. In the 80s, many new wave bands hit the top spot on the charts, Duran Duran, Berlin, the Human League, Aha, Blondie Culture Club etc.
But how The Cure never did, is a head scratcher. They created so many luscious and hook laden classics, it was disarming. Songs like In-between days, LoveCats, Boys Don't Cry, The Catipillar, Let's Go To Bed and of course Just like Heaven, which in my opinion is a perfect pop song.
Flawless, consumate, quintessential, unmitigated, out and out absolute no doubt about it perfection. It's the equivalent of musical heroin. Robert Smith created so many hooks, so many enthralling melodies in this song, it's virtually impossible for the human ear to reject it. Even the jocks at my school, who called me every name in the book for my love of New wave, always said The Cure sucks but that heaven songs is cool. This of course made me and my friends yearn to hate it. But we couldn't because it's just ecstasy.
Believe it or not, "Just Like Heaven" BARELY charted on the Billboard Hot 100- peaking at #40 in 1987. It charted a bit higher in the UK at #29. By industry standards, the song could be deemed a 'stiff', or a 'mid-chart single', at best. "Just Like Heaven" wasn't even the highest charting song for The Cure. Both "Lovesong" and "Friday, I'm In Love" charted higher on the Billboard Hot 100- #2 and #18, respectively.
And, maybe my FAVORITE part of the song; the piano parts, masterfully played by longtime Cure keyboardist Lol Tolhurst. The piano parts are perhaps the real hook to "Just Like Heaven"- entering into the song's structure in the 2nd verse, and becoming the centerpiece of a magical instrumental bridge. I also LOVE the way the piano melody underscores the repeated lyric "I'll run away with you….I'll run away with you." (Audio clip of this part)
"Just Like Heaven" was the 3rd single from The Cure album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, which was an amazing record- full of some of the best songs by The Cure- including "Hot Hot Hot" and the lead single from the album "Why Can't I Be You".
Robert recognized, much later, that the song structure of "Just Like Heaven" is similar to a late 70s tune by The Only Ones called "Another Girl, Another Planet". Could've been in Robert's subconscious when he was working on the song. You be the judge...
Because it is such a beloved tune, there are many covers of "Just Like Heaven"- including Robert Smith's personal favorite- the version by Dinosaur Jr., which has a faster tempo and a heavier distorted interpretation
As one of the most influential bands of the Rock Era, trust me we will be paying tribute to Robert Smith & The Cure in the future, and celebrate their amazing discography. But in this episode, "Just Like Heaven" gets the spotlight for being "#1 in our hearts!" By the way the week Just Like Heaven peaked at #40 the top five songs on the billboard charts were: So Emotional Whitney Houston, Got Mind Set on You George Harrison, Faith George Michael, Is This Love Whitesnake, and the Way you make me Feel Michael Jackson, The last thee songs in the top 40 that week were True Faith New Order, Push It Salt N Peppa and The Cure. Ya the 80s ruled.

I'm not familiar with The Cure so I downloaded the song to see if you had a case. I've heard it before, and without going through their entire catalogue I have to believe you're right. I'm a music lover who personally likes catchy songs that hook me, and don't think artists typically set out to write them. It just seems that way to music conspiracy theorists. I'm sure there are Bowie Lovers who absolutely Hate The popular song "Young Americans" but after you listen to it you're Hooked!

It’s because the music Industry tells us what is “cool” and what is not. The cure had so many - so many awesome songs but the record industry won’t play or allow those tracks come to fruition back then. But the reason their other ones are more popular is because alternative scene was exploding on mtv and mtv 2 and the record companies couldn’t control it. Same with other great bands like echo and the bunny men. But because they weren’t like the crap they repeated every hour it didn’t fit. I don’t even listen to radio anymore. It doesn’t fit society anymore. Just listen to what’s on the radio today and go to UA-cam. It’s non stop this stuff sucks or if you go to bands like the cure non stop “today’s music sucks compared to this” and even the youth of today say the same thing.

One of his details was to work the Cure concert at Dodger stadium. After that shift, he became a die hard Cure fan.

I've seen Def Leppard, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Neil Diamond, U2, and many concerts that were compilations of many artists touring together that couldn't fill a stadium by themselves but when combined with other groups, could. Still The Cure was the greatest.

My favorite song in that record, "How Beautiful You Are" is even more romantic than "Just Like Heaven". The heartbreak in finding out that, rather than being "two souls as one", "no-one ever knows or loves another" is devastatingly beautiful. Although "Heaven" might be a truer account of Smith's actual personal life (to my knowledge, he's still married to that same high school sweetheart), "Beautiful" is closer to the intellectual and artistic heart of Robert Smith. He's not a nihilist or a misanthrope, rather, he lives in that twilight of wanting to believe that love exists and knowing that it doesn't for most. That, my friends, is romantic.

Robert Smith is a brilliant lyricist, infusing witt with pure ear to ear smile inducing pop, but what puts him over the top for me is he sings with pure raw emotion and lays it all on the line. "Just Like Heaven" was, and is, a fantastic song. But my all time favorite Cure song is, and will always be "Close to me."
I'll never forget my best friend picking me up in his 1969 AMX on a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning in the summer of 1987, to go to our local "Trak Auto" auto parts store.
This car was awesome. Everything about it was upgraded. It was super fast, and most importantly to me at the time, it had a kick ass Alpine cassette head unit in it, two Rockford "Punch 150" amps, and eight high end speakers.
As we pulled out onto the road, he pushed a "mix tape" into the Alpine, smiled, and laid into the accelerator. Suddenly the sweet sound of that AMC's built 390, was cut off by the almost deafening sound of what seemed to be a door creaking as it was slowly being opened. The drums started in with what sounded like heavy breathing, along with a synthesized clapping, and organ. And when he began to sing, I found myself looking over with a sh*t eating grin on my face.
Between the brutal pull of that car's engine, and this incredibly loud song I was hearing for the very first time, I felt like I was on cloud nine. That song never gets old. Especially when it's played at high volume, on a high end stereo system.
The next song that came on was another I had never heard before. And it is equally as awesome. And that was "Planet Claire", by the B-52s. I can't hear either one, without thinking about the other, or that 69 AMX. Damn, I miss the 80s.

Lullaby is so wonderful in the creepiest way. The imagery in that song is so intense but the music behind the lyrics is positively mesmerizing. Pictures of You is incomparable. This track from The Cure truly informed my taste in music. I was 13 years old in 1988. Prior to hearing 'Just Like Heaven,' I would follow my school mates and their taste for artists like Bon Jovi, Pat Bennetar, Michael Jackson etc, but once I saw the video of Just Like Heaven on MTV, I was gripped by the audible and visual magic of this masterpiece. There was something different about The Cure from anything else I had been exposed to in music previously. This song is magical and as much as the song is genius, the video has a cinematic quality that engages the viewer and gives you a glimpse into the world of The Cure. Thirty plus years and hundreds of records later, I can point out this specific song as the one that impacted my interest in music and unique artists to the present day.

You couldn't even really hear In Between Days broadcasted in the US in the mid-80s, unless you were watching 120 Minutes on MTV, or were close enough to a college radio station.

I agree with your statement about Americans. British music was (is) the best. Musically, lyrically.
Joy Division, New Order (Blue Monday is still one of the best songs ever!) Siouxsie and the Banshees/The Creatures, Bauhaus-(and various Band member incarnations), Duran Duran, Ultra Vox, Cocteau Twins, The Smiths/Morrissey, Depeche Mode, The Cult, The Mission UK, Sisters of Mercy, Legendary Pink Dots, The English Beat, The Clash, The Specials, UB40, Soft Cell, Gary Numan, Tears For Fears, Sex Pistols, John Lydon, Malcolm McLaren, to name a few, in no order in-particular.
