Chile's Mapuche people vs the State: A battle for ancestral lands | Talk to Al Jazeera

  • In Chile, the Mapuche communities make up roughly 12 percent of the country's population.
They have historically been the poorest and most discriminated-against sector of society.
In fact, Chile is one of a few countries in the world whose constitution does not recognise its Indigenous peoples.
The conflict against the state has been simmering for years, but in recent months more radical Mapuche groups have been attacking and torching hundreds of trucks, farms, homes, forest lands owned by lumber companies and even trains.
So, is there a path to peaceful coexistence?

If this could apply the whole world will not be like this.
From history another countries raid other countries , if they defeat them they took land and anything they want.
But in chille, many people who owned lands bought from the state, so giving it back for free will not happen.
Many allowed if there's someone to buy the land as their daughters and grandsons doesn't have any interest on farming, but there's no one to buy back even mapuche who owned a big land will not make farm to make huge money because they are connected with nature and changing landscape is wrong to them

We the chileans made it what it is, most of the "mapuche" barely even qualify as such, they usually don't speak mapudungun, don't have mapuche surnames, don't have any connection to the lands they claim, and are fully integrated into chilean society, I live here, I know them and I know how they are, they're virtually the same as us, ethnically, culturally and even in identity.

@@fedpostah The fact that right-wing politicians constantly win in the Araucanía region has more to do with the effects of the violent actions taken by some groups rather than what a group of Mapuche did 30 years ago. If you knew a little about Mapuche political structure, you would realize that what the Nueva Imperial Council did back then is not representative of the will of the entire Mapuche people. In fact, is this fragmentation of leadership what makes it so difficult to solve the conflict. Some Mapuche don't want anything to do with the Chilean state and would rather be independent, some others want to receive reparations for the century and a half of oppression and discrimination, and some others want to integrate to the Chilean state without neglecting their cultural roots.
TL;DR: Pinochet is not the king of the Mapuche (there has never been one, not even that French guy was really a king), and right-wing politicians obtain electoral profit from the violent actions carried out by some Mapuche.

Despite being Mapuche and belonging to a community, it is very difficult for young people (40 and under) to know the language because the Winkas, as we call them, have humiliated us and forced us to speak Spanish since they invaded our "mapu" (land).
Nowadays there are people fighting for the integration of Mapuzungun, but the Chilean state does not help much. For this and many other reasons our country is drafting a new constitution in which a Mapuche woman was elected as the president of the Constitutional Convention of Chile, who is also a Mapuche linguist and professor at the Department of Education of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile and a defender of the native languages. Her name is Elisa Loncón Antileo.
Here is what she had to say on the subject:
"It is part of the struggle of the indigenous peoples, but in the link with the States the languages are threatened. There are no language policies that favour their development. It is a delicate situation that needs to be addressed. The right to the use of language is a fundamental human right"

@@koteuwu6785 human rights are a concept of european origin, and it's an extension of christianity. if you want to separate yourself, you have to also show that you're not hypocrites, and not use any culture, technology, or product of european origin. since human rights are european origin, you can't refer to them when talking about the use of language.

@@IRGhost0 I find what you say is very ignorant, human rights are of European origin, but that has nothing to do with who they are directed at. Are indigenous people not human beings like Europeans?
And as for the use of one's own language as a human right, for example the right of all indigenous children to learn their own language, well it has been defined as a fundamental human right, we are human because we have a language. Without it, we are silenced as a culture, so the approach is profoundly human.
And it is not about wanting to "separate" ourselves in a bad way from other cultures like the European ones, it is about our culture being recognised and respected like any other. Have a nice day!

In my school about ¾ of the mapuche kids (i.e. by blood and family name) are fully integrated into Chile without any interest in their native language nor culture, they look, speak, act and dress like chileans, and there is no telling between them and a non-mapuche.

More than anything a peopls are defined by culture rather than blood. Look at the U.S.. Multi- racial but having an "american mindset" whether they be European or Asian!

Pinochet era was peaceful. One Mapuche woman said that with a stroke of the pen the Mapuches were written out of existence - everyone in Chile were one people. That was a genius move, not of a tyrant. In the USA the Civil War rages on after 162 years. Buried bodies are desecrated, statues are destroyed or removed. Never ending resentment is not good for any nation. Spanish authority left Mapuche land undisturbed? Settling old grudges can be the cause of great unintended bloodshed. Killing your neighbors is an unforgivable act without any justification. Big forestry land grabs is a different matter.
