Loved this! A Greek tip: You can soak your lentils overnight and they’ll cook faster and give you less “side effects”..But make sure to dump the water you soaked them in. Try adding some olive oil as well. You got me going on making a solar oven myself. Thank you!

That slow fan illusion is caused by the frame rate of your camera. Great idea, thanks.

Excellent idea, but I would slope the top of the box away from the house. Rain and snow may be a problem in it's present configuration. You definitely deserve an "atta girl " for thinking "outside the box"!!!!!

    • @cptcosmo
      @cptcosmo 4 роки тому +1

Good point. For rain 1/4" (2%) per foot slope is all you need, for snow, you'll also need a steeper slope to shed snow and take into consideration the extra snow loads when it come to supports/fasteners, or the box will just rip free...

So great. Kudos! I’ve been using a sun oven for almost 20 years & finally have the opportunity to design & build one into my new home plan. Double duty as a space heater really increases the face value of this project. One of my faves is 12 scrambled eggs, some diced pre-cooked breakfast meat, dehydrated tomatoes & sharp cheddar in a round granite ware pot. Makes 4 huge servings suitable for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Add broccoli, chard, spinach, carrot, onion, and herbs for more variety. Deli Turkey ends are good chopped up in it if you don’t do pork

Glad that I ran into this video. I live in Minnesota and one of my worries is a long time power grid breakdown. I can deal with short term. I have a garden window in my kitchen (a sort of green house that extends a few feet out of the building). And that would be a perfect solution to add some warmth to the house in an emergency, by using something painted black. (It's a lot bigger than your window.) I can't even imagine why the thumbs down. Great idea. That could also work for heating water, using a black camping shower bag (not for drinking).

Great vid and fantastic idea, I will share it in the solar cooking community. Been reading some of the comments and am surprised by the amount of ignorance on solar cooking. Micro biologist have demonstrated that food, milk, water etc is pasteurized if it is exposed to 65oC for 15 minutes or longer or 71oC for 15 seconds - 165 degrees Fahrenheit = 73.89 degrees Celsius - so there is no problem with the food being safe. I have solar cooked since 1997 and have NEVER gotten sick from the food prepared in a solar box, panel or parabolic cooker or oven. Some folks like +S3thy offering opinions should really research before stating their opinions as facts. There is a wiki and several web pages devoted to solar cooking. We have build and sold several thousand here in Bolivia.

You should use a probe thermometer. The probe stays in the pot, but the display stays outside the oven.

I agree with the thinking outside the box comments below, brilliant. I have some flexible solar panels on my porch to power a 12v kettle and 12v cooker, but I need 2 more panels to get the power. I have made a portable sun oven, but it can be improved as it is a first attempt. Your design is brilliant and I am going to give is a go. Thank you for sharing your outside the box thinking :) x

Thanks for the video, this is awesome. However I have a few suggestions. Maybe you could put a mirrored tint on your window with a little unmirrored or dark tinted viewing hole. This would allow you to view your food like a window on an oven and possibly make your design better.
Another thought is to cover the entire window by putting the top piece at maybe a 45 degree angle. This will allow you to open the top portion of the window and let even more heat into the house and possibly put a window fan in the bottom to blow air from the house into the box to be heated and come out through the top. Also in summer maybe it would be possible to secure the reflective floor pad on the top so that it blocks heat from entering when it is not wanted.

This has to be the best video I have seen on UA-cam in a long time. The fact alone that you are taken the gas & electric company out is crazy. This can save people so much money even if you only use it for 1 meal a day your ytd return on your savings has to be in the $1,000.
Is there a way you could make a how to video on how you made your box. Step by step it would really help a lot of people out. Again I wish I could give you more then a thumbs up I have already shared this on social media. Also a new Subscriber I have to see what else you have done.

I have watched this video before , saved it then lost it because the phone went for a "swim" at the lake . Since this works so well for you in Colorado I know it will work well here in Oklahoma where I live . I accidentally found a free custom made aquarium made with tempered glass . I flipped it on to its side made a "door" for the "top opening" & I am going to see just how well that works . I am always recycling diff things , if it doesn't work for my original idea I keep trying other ideas. The plain breakable glass aquariums I use in the house as mini greenhouses to grow lettuce , radishes , etc yr round & start seeds for the garden in the early cool spring instead of buying started plants .

This has to be one of the best ideals I have seen in a long time, Of course I will be making me one of these. I also will be making a (like a short 20 Feet long green house) attached to my house where I have 2 windows side by side. The green house will have black plastic over p.v.c. hoops that will encompass the outside of both windows (up from the ground around the top of both windows and back to the ground) at the same time. I will divide the green house in half on the inside except the last 2 feet. I will have 2 fans, one for each window. one blowing in and the other blowing out. Free heat.......

  • @MindCrime550

Paint the cook vessels (if possible) a flat black or even a matte/textured surface. Something that has more surface area to collect all that infrared. Speaking of which I think that's why your camera doesn't like your oven its a lot of infrared light and your camera can see it while we can't. The fan rotation is wonky on the camera because of the rate at which the camera captures frames and it happens to have some harmonic effect with the speed at which the fans rotate. I love how effective your oven is for how simple of a design it is.

Didn't read all the comments, so someone else may have suggested trying this. If you place some cardboard which almost fits the window, except with a small space at bottom and top, then you may not even need the solar fans. Since hot air rises naturally, the theory is that cooler air would be pulled in at the bottom while the hot air comes out the top.

I have double pane windows and I'd be afraid of excessive heating of the air space between the two panes and maybe that causing the window to crack.

I really like this whole ideal, I like anything solar and really like anything that works double duty! We use our solar cardboard box oven and love but, I like this even better. you could use this very easy year round to cook, and to heat in the colder months. Very smart, thank you for posting this video. And, the recipe looks good, we are going to try this out in our solar oven. If you have any other solar recipes would you please post them. We are always looking for good recipes to fix in our solar oven.

Wonderful idea! I sew so I would skip the paint and make it black material. Thank you!

What a great idea! I have been looking for how to take advantage of my south facing windows with having to cut a hole in the side of my house.

frugalgreengirl Just wondering if you have tried propping some of your shinny window shade material between the window and pot when in oven mode? This would keep some light out of the house, but direct it to the pot and should give you a little higher temp in the pot.

Thanks for the video. What a great idea utilising all round solar input. It's given me a good idea for my camp at Angledool NSW. Best wishes.

This is very brilliant concept and like it so much that I would love to make it and combine it with solar storage for other stuff such as shower, or to run appliances!!

Excellent video. Awemazing. Thank you for teaching. How did you seal edges of box? If this heats the house in winter, what do you do with box in summer, use it as an oven only? I want to have one constructed. Brilliant idea.

What the great video, I love the simplicity of it! What would happen if you took those fans and place them inside the box when you were cooking? What does turn it into a convection solar oven!!! 🤯
