Real shame about the distorted audio quality. I saw in the comments that this is the only known recording about. Real shame, but otherwise a brilliant account of this vehicle. I want a 6x6 Perentie now!

I was the Medic with LTTT on Project Perentie in 1983-84. 6 x 6 = way to go. (Troop carrying, off road, Ambulance, whatever.) Lot of BS went on as well - we sunk the 2 ton Unimog doing beach landing (still got the photo!), AM10 broke its engine mounts on the Muttaburra track, company reps ...

@@groverandphoenix Yes, however the ARA has only recently moved on to the G-Wagen, mistakenly in my view. Perenties are still being auctioned off to the public today, and are an excellent purchase due to low mileage and frequent servicing. One of the best parts of the Perentie's appeal, mechanically, is the use of Isuzu engines, NA in the 4WD and turbo in the 6x6 variants.
Quite possibly, the army is selling these off gradually at the moment and a few have gone to the UK in 4x4 and 6x6 guise. a few 6x6 were sold to Oman, and one 6x6 made it's way to Malawi.
@@alanbstard4 which unit? I never saw them. the US army Delta force used 6x6 pinzgauers and they shit all over the LRPV variants. The 6x6 was grossly underpowered, low ground clearance, always hitting the front track rod onn rocks or termite mounds, this bar was lower than the front axle... ludicrous..... if two of the rear wheels , on one side, were in slippery mud all the power went to those wheels and wouldnt move, even though the othe 4 wheels were on tractionable ground ! ! !, it took nearly 12 years to get diff locks and a bigger turbo on the LRPV's only as they were deploying to Afghanistan and later Iraq, However I love them and I am in the market for one to use as my roo shooter
Unfortunatelly this is just history, from the year 2000 LRovers quality, hence reliability went down. That must be why the company was sold to BMW, FORD to finally merge with Jaguar and be owned by TATA today -using ford engines- 😜
whole of land rover production plant been moved to india have nothing in solihull birmingham now ,uk government should never sell the company to other countries products yes
No, because nothing is better than a Mercedes G (in this class, above is the unimog, and at the top is the Zetros), even the Yankees buy the "G"! As the factory in Austria can not keep up with the orders, they forced Mercedes to build a new factory in Algeria, right?
I have experience land rover defend of own I own two, then military version the famous WOLF, finally the Mercedes G, both in 4X4 and 6X6, the 4X4 was my father's, the 6X6 is military is with portal axels, 15 years of service in various military operations, from Europe, Africa and Asia, all land Rover Wolf, we had, were replaced by Mercedes G, most 4X4 and some 6X6 with portal axels, REPEAT: even the Yankees buy them ! Ps. I do not know what engine they have bought, if they have axels, if they are armored, and so on. On the other hand, these PARENTIE were built in Australia, not in England ... Quality comes at a price, when Australia refused to buy the Mercedes G it was for the price, and now they already buy it ?! Why buy them? To finish: the mercedes G of my father, already has more than 1.5 million km has a 240D engine and is 1983 !!! No turbos, I already bought two Land Rover defend and the two together do not have 200,000 km! Are you sure you know what a Mercedes G diesel is? Then it's the gasoline AMG ... Ps. A MAN is BETTER than Mercedes ?! LOOOOOL for your information, the Mercedes have 16 speeds (in ups and downs) the MAN only 12, this with automatic gearboxes, Mercedes has as option an even lower gearbox, what is known as: LOW LOW, MAN does not have any. The Mercedes Zetros or AROCS, follow the follow-up of Unimog, which, no other manufacturer has been able to build better, SCANIA, Is much better than MAN, idem for IVECO or RENAULT / MACK, volvo does not produce military vehicles. MAN is cheaper than ALL other builders, such as the Land Rover for the Australian army, if they had bought the Mercedes G, they would not change, because they would still have many years to go. Have they switched to the MercedesG because the land rover sucks, even with four speeds?Open diffs? The Mercedes is 5 automatic, all-wheel drive and differential lockers, this without entering the list of options, right? In my military career, I met Australian soldiers not only at Rwanda or Afganistan. Good friends i have in Australia! Do you think a G mercedes is expensive? Buy a toyota land cruser 79, and to be "equal" to a "G" you have to change the rear differential, cut and lengthen the chassis, increase power because the toyota just creeps, and you will never be able to carry both Weight as in a mercedes ute, and this without modifying anything, right? Adding the necessary modifications to a toyota land ceuiser 79, which is the most expensive? Now there is an Australian company that builds toyotas land cruiser ute 6X6, because the Australian army did not buy them if they are cheaper than the mercedes (each 6X6 costs about 300,000 Australian dollars), I do not live in Australia, I'm not Australian. If they bought them, it was not to do the Germans any favors, they bought because nothing is better than a Mercedes G and since 1979! I repeat, even the Yankees buy them, and if the Yankees buy them, I'm not sure, but I think the UK wants them too! Canadians do not want anything else! As English is not my language, forgive me the errors in the language of Shakespeare!
he Australian army bought the G mercedes in 2009, but, it began to negotiate much sooner! Http://www.motoring.com.au/australian-armys-new-g-wagon-17246/ Land Rover decided to stop manufacturing the defenses in 2014! The Australian company that manufactures the land cruiser 6X6 is this (not the toyota): http: //www.multidrive.com.au The Mercedes makes vehicles with axels portal since 1946 does not need Volvo for anything! Ps. The military Mercedes can turn off the alternators, you can enter the water until the air enters the snorkel or the roof, anyone inside the car has no air! And already, they work at 24volts! I would buy one, if Mercedes sold it! Ps. The Mercedes g 6X6 or 4X4 portal axels is the same width as a mercedes sprinter or Iveco Daily, A mercedes G 4x4 or 6X6 without portal axels is the same width as a toyota land cruiser series 76! BUT, these parentie were not manufactured by the land rover, but rather by an Australian company, on the other hand, with the anti pollution regulations in force here in europe, north america where it is war on "diesel" makes this izuzu 3.9 Illegal, attention, I'M DEFENDING TO DIE !!! The G Mercedes are ugly, but they are the best! I did not appear in this video by chance, I do not go "behind" a Parentie by chance, it's that I want to buy one, I still have not gotten any at auction without a motor, because then I'll deal with it! Imagine: mechanic redone (izuzu 5.1 with the gearbox of them) without forgetting the tranfer boxe of izuzu), portal axels with the reinforced axles, Hydro-Pneumatic Suspension, etc and on the chassis an EARTHCRUISER !!! To travel the planet ... In default of not being able to buy a Mercedes 6X6 g will be a parentie! To finish: I am Land Rover DEFEND until after death! Everyone knows that the most beautiful 4X4 is Defender, but, it's not the best, nothing is as good as the Mercedes G, believe me, I do not speak for what I read, it's personal experience!
They are a marvel! I have a cousin who has on, it was an ambulance, today is a camping car !!! But, attention, on the outside this same as bought it (just had to give a hand of varnish in the painting), inside is more luxurious than a range rover of the new! Bought it in England, i thought to buy one too, but, I want to buy a Parentie 6X6 to make a camping car of it! Here in the family we all have the same political party, the same brand of beer, only in sports it is not, some like football, but most are all rugby(like me)! As for religion, it's all Land Rover! Ps. Who invented the GPS were the English with Land Rover, is not oil leak, is to mark the way! Right? My heart is Land Rover, but, my head is Mercedes Benz G, because it's better. Sorry it's better! And buy a Parentie 6X6 and modify it, it's not as expensive as that! If you think about traveling the planet, one with the "house" of the earthcruiser on top of it, is a great option.
The 4X4 is a sure hit, to go to a land rover meeting, there should not be many in Europe, the 6X6 is for another purpose, besides the exclusivity I want to make it a camping car! Leave home one day early in the morning and return after a few years! The engine izuzu 3.9 is bullet proof, but it is weak, box with 4 speeds nothing arranges, the aim is to get the mechanics of an Izuzu 5.2 / gearbox, or a MAN 4.5 / gearbox the cummins also has a good engine The 4.5 (but I do not want to) these engines are made according to the gearbox, so the longevity / reliability is good, nowadays the diesel engines have a lot of electro-mechanics, and they do not like to change their power. To pull +/- 6t has to have a powerful motor without changing the original power, to increase the power is to take longevity to a motor. The idea is to transform everything and save just the cabin, chassis and differentials. I have a cousin with a 101 fwc, one day left home just came back 6 years later! Even today I was with him and I told him in our conversation, here, on UA-cam, and he says that he is ready for another adventure!
Cos a Mercedes G Wagon was and still is a purpose built from the start as a combat vehicle. The LR had to be modified. They chose LR chose for the price. Mercedes now works out cheaper per unit.

There is some distortion from the original sadly, so that wasn't able to be eliminated.

Strictly not a Defender as this was pre-1990. "Defender" was only 1990 onwards.
