Part 1 - Hiking in Normandy from Cherbourg to Valognes

- I've been meaning to do this hike in Normandy for the longest time. I've always been a fan of world war 2 and the Normandy D-Day landing beaches of Operation Overlord have always been fascinating to me. I met up with my friend Chase (also big into history) in Paris and together we took the train to Cherbourg to being our hike. Our plan was to visit all 5 D Day landing beaches along with a bunch of other World War 2 sites.

WOW, this channel is a box of surprises. After the fantastic videos about the Portuguese empire, a fantastic expedition through Normandy. As a veteran paratrooper, it is a place that tells me a lot where an extraordinary generation sacrificed itself to free Europe from Nazism. I will be eagerly awaiting the next episodes.
Next is Valognes to Ste. Mere Eglise - we are entering into the 82nd and 101st Airborne drop zones - think you'll like that one
A VERY cool idea !!
I know Normandy quite a lot, i went there at least 3 times i can recall and this is a refreshing way of doing history !
The visuals and battle schematics that go along with it are fantastic
I played in the old Bunkers Close to the beaches a lot as a Child while Holidays. Loved it
Normandy is quite beautiful. The little towns are precious.
PS: You're in France, you don't have to say you ate well here or there, we know it! Last time I went to France I spent 5 days and gained 2.5 kg! LOL
You are a great storyteller. As I'm loving the series about Portuguese overseas expansion, I decided to take this interesting trip here too.
You're headed to Normandy?
Amazing how this video was more than a vlog, but also a video on the history of your tour locations, great video hope you will do more in the future :D
I am so jealous of this experience. We did a WWII trip to France and Belgium last year and started in Normandy, went up the northern coast to Dunkirk and then over to Bastogne. We only had a week but it was awesome. We spent 2 days in the Normandy region with a guide and I got to learn about my grandfather's experiences there. He was wounded just outside of Carentan. We went off the beaten path and explored the hedge rows. Definitely going back and look forward to seeing your experience to get a better idea of what to explore next.
That sounds like an awesome trip too! Always wanted to see Dunkirk. We walked through Carentan - it was a crucial city. Your grandfather helped to liberate a town that made D-day a success. Amazing!
@@FlashPointHx I'm glad we stopped and did a guided tour of Dunkirk but we found that an afternoon was all the time we needed. It was April, so that may have been part of it, but there wasn't a lot to see and do. If you're traveling to Dunkirk, be sure to stop at the Museum of the Atlantic Wall to check out the massive guns that were used to shoot shells at England.
this looks to have the markings of a great series....loving the 3d mapping from above, particularly liked the paris one around the arc, as i had only been around it at night and didnt realize the structure of the area...wow..... :) Looking forward to the notables you find, like that fort in cherbourg ..they look like small gems indeed
Glad you enjoyed it! Wanted to use this new program that Google just came out with - thus all the 3D renders
That looks like great fun!
Awesome guys! You always make My day
Anytime :)
This will be good. I'll be following along! Eagerly waiting for the next part!
Been looking forward to this 😈 as always, excellent work - can't wait for more. Normandie is truly a special place 🥰
Totally agree with you - loved this part of the world
Great stuff. You can't truly understand a battlefield until you've walked it. V Jealous
That's the trip I was planning to do with my wife when our daughter was born and we postponed. But I would love to do it and your videos will certainly be useful! Thank you for sharing your hike with us!
Definitely go - Normandy is beautiful!
Really awesome work you did FPH! Can't wait to see part2!
It’s gonna be Valognes to St Mere Eglise - we’re getting into Airborne territory
Valognes sounds fun
"For some reason all the accommodation was booked"
You were visiting during the Rugby World Cup and staying at one of the main ports serving Ireland and the UK. I'd say that was a reason it was difficult to find places to stay in Cherbourg.
That makes sense now!! You’re right in Paris we saw a bunch of Rugby events. I booked this hotel 3 months ahead of time and it was still hard to get. I don’t follow rugby so had no idea
1 - I had no idea you'd done so much epic stuff, but I'm wholly unsurprised 😅
2 - having been to Paris a couple times, I have yet to encounter a single rude person. TBF I think it mostly comes down to Americans not knowing how to act overseas. My wife and I actually got some exceptionally kind help from strangers in getting around and dealing with unexpected transit issues.
I agree - we had a fun time in Paris and even hung out with a bar own on the Ile de Cite
It was interesting historically and thrilled watching a video about Journey towards Cherbourg ..thank you (🙏 flash point history) channel for sharing
You expressed some doubts about doing this series, but that was a great first episode, my dude
Thank you !
You should hike the Vasco da Gama route next! Great content.
I’d have to swim it ;)
@@FlashPointHx "Man drowned outside of Lisbon while trying to reach India, more at 9"
Hope you enjoyed my old neighborhood 😄
Thank you for this one, i cant travel there myself anymore and i miss the region.,❤
I’m so going back to Normandy with my wife and son ! You’re right - this place is awesome. Where did you live again?
@@FlashPointHx Caen, as a Dutchy it was a fun place to grow up and visit international school.
But I lived in many cities and towns you want to visit i fear 😆
(Caen,Paris, Stavelot, Eindhoven, Nijmegen,Berlin,Dresden to name a few)
@@misterangel8486 that’s right!
@@misterangel8486 we hit that up at the very end
I love this! Thank you Nitin
Any time Cartman !
You should hike on the same route Hannibal Barca took when he crossed the alps. A little bit tougher than a leisurely walk through the land of the North men.
There are people who do this - the problem is that they don't know with 100% certainty the exact route he took
@@FlashPointHx for a youtuber with so many subscribers, I have massive respect for you for replying to everyone's comments. Thanks man
Here is a walk for you, walk the same road that Marco Polo did 😊
@@patrickols Venice to China and back, along the Silk road. Beautiful.
Karl Pilkington and Warwick Davies made the journey. I'm not sure if they flew part way or genuinely made the trek, though. Great idea Patrick.
Would love to do this one day.
It was an awesome time
Wow, let's travel Normandy🍻
I need to get back here with the family one of these days - Normandy is beautiful
This is amazing Nitin! This is a nice little detour if you will, as it feels like I'm coming along for the walk. Btw, I love the accompanying graphics and battle schematics. Between all of the walking and the disappointing French cuisine, you'll be returning to the U.S. a few pounds lighter. 😂
Hahaha - the food was actually really good - and the wine was impressive. I always disliked French wine, but I realized that the French wine we get here in the states is the left over crap the French didn’t want. The stuff there is amazing and cheap as it is subsidized by the government
Lol, I agree. I didn't care for French wine until I tried it at the source. Now, I have a slightly more favorable opinion of it. 😂 it still lags behind Italy, Spain, and California imo. I'm glad you're enjoying yourself my friend.
What a beautiful area. And then there's the darkest side of humanity. Safe travels out there, guys.
We made it safe and sound - in fact we hit up a bunch of nice restaurants and bars / cafes along the way
A sacrifice for the algoritm!
I got a great idea 💡 Start in Lisbon and document the point at which the Portuguese set sail. Then you can make your way to Ceuta and all the other ports they discovered/founded along the African coast… finally finish in Calicut and Cochin … I think that would be the most epic IRL vlog experience & it’s coincides with your videos. This has never been done before you can even link it to your Portugal age of discovery videos.
Or not all the ports but maybe the most notable ones…
hahaha - Ceuta would be nice - but going to Somali might not be so much fun
13-17 miles is a good day of hiking.
Was it ever
Again I only knew a new video because I looked.. I hit the bell and no blue dot in search bar.
Uggg YT is terrible with their notification system
Can you do a video on the black brunswickers, (neopleonic times) , i came across the story while learning ww2 things
The thing about walking is that it’s such an intimate way to experience the journey. But no good thing comes without a sacrifice- did you find yourself a different pair of shoes or did you just tough it out?
I used two pairs of socks and traveled the back roads - It helped and managed to get through
Como brasileiro eu digo indignado se você não dublou os melhores vídeos sobre o glorioso império Português em minha língua diga uma área como lusitano que todo brasileiro a final é que todo africano da África portuguesa é
history is written by the victors, and nowhere is this truer than with WW2
Just curious but are you proficient in a lot of languages? I remember in an episode you mentioned your wife spoke Spanish: But you’re pretty well traveled!
I'm kind of a chameleon - after a few weeks in any country I can pick up enough of the language to get by.
1:48 - which one are you?
The brown one
I'm sure a few years ago you said you're muslim or something?@@FlashPointHx
Am i late on face reveal?
You are never late, nor are you early - you arrive precisely when you mean to
why am i getting hobbit vibes
😆
@@Nikki541ad totally felt like that at times
The beast called Napoleon, not only destroyed the conquers of the French revolution, as reintroduced slavery after being abolished in Haiti. Also he was a loser, he tryed 3 times to conquer Portugal and always was defeated.
13 min serious should be 30min minimum 🤨
Next one covers Ste. Marie Eglise - will definitely be longer.
You didn't book your hotel for the first night of a walking tour, how do Americans put it ... 'Rookie Mistake'.
You arrived during the Rugby World Cup (that's the game where real men chase around an egg shaped ball, without several layers of armour and helmets, and don't stop to catch their breath every two minutes) ... didn't do your homework.
Cherbourg is a working port town, its not Martha's Harbor.
You didn't break in your hiking boots first ... see first comment.
You can't measure distances on a map ... you say you've done trips like this before ?
Hey Yank, welcome to the war 🤣
Hahaha - I don’t follow rugby and I did break in the shoes - but figured Cherbourg would have more to offer.
Now if you'd been in search of fish, bars and houses of ill repute I'm sure you wouldn't have been disappointed 😁@@FlashPointHx
