Because those are the hard parts of the shoe where it doesn’t bend. If applied to the soft areas of the shoe, the wax “breaks” and you walk, leaving marks and dry residue.

I think the color of these shoes was a slightly orange-brown. I used medium brown wax!
Is the finger application common practice?
I think in Japan, shoe shiners often use their fingers to apply cream and other things.
