It inspires me to be free and happy. To feel young and optimistic. The Pet Shop Boys have made an awesome song an anthem of youth and joy. Greetings from Bolivia.
The football part is so true! XD For my local footbal team, someone even rewrote the entire song (chorus and verses) and it's our goal anthem to this day. Thiat was actually the first "version" of Go West that I knew, back in the 90s and only a bit later did I discover the PSB and instantly fell in love as a kid.
The power of great pop song is how it touches many different people in so many different ways. PSB's Go West also became a humanist anthem to the ideal of Democratic Freedom - the promise of peace and freedom for the embattled and oppressed.
@@steveforest8385 I'm always shocked that this doesn't come up sooner. The video for the song very overtly refers to soviet imagery and the music is clearly lifted from the soviet anthem.
When I lived in Dresden and the football club there played World Cup matches on the big screen, they played this song every time Germany scored. I'm not sure what they would have played had Germany conceded a goal... "Back in the USSR" by the Beatles maybe?!
I think the Village People's version partly was that. A lot of their songs satirise essentially conservative things (Christianity in 'YMCA', the military in 'In the Navy'), so I think 'Go West' was probably at least partly a play on that Cold War rhetoric, where 'West' stood for San Francisco and California and disco rather than Western capitalism.
Not at all - the lyrics talk about loving the beach, sun in winter time, busy pace back east. The Village People we’re New York based. The western US has always been known for laid-back casual lifestyles as opposed to the stuffy, studious, corporate, rat-race back east. Not about defecting communist regimes for the west at all.
Gosh I never realised that this song was about AIDS and Go West was about going west to California, I thought it was about comunisium and how life would be better in the West comparied to the East! Wow!
Yes, this song is generally about Freedom $ PEACE 🙌❤in the Human hearts. Neither communism nor capitalism is better to live in. If they turn into totalitarianism and imperialism Да это песня вообще о Свободе и МИРЕ в сердцах Людей. Ни при коммунизме, ни при капитализме жить - не лучше. Если они превращаются в тоталитаризм и империализм
Not doubting his talent and success, but I thought it quite arrogant and dismissive for him to say the Village People’s version wasn’t anthemic. Sure, the bridge they added is superb, but they would not have had a version to cover had it not been for the original. He should be grateful to Victor Willis etc. not critical.
The cover's far better than the original as 'Always on my mind' was. BTW the girl playing the piano messed up the second last chord. it's a D minor, not a F major
Colin Irwin did NOT write this song. The graphics erroneously imply this, by not being clear under his name. Maybe say what songs IRWIN wrote so it’s clear that he’s only there to comment on someone else’s work.
My favourite was the construction 🚧 worker. I went to New York and we met and went for a lovely dinner. Invited back for Hot Coffee ☕️ and a sensational night. It was only in the morning I discovered he was gay. But never mind, he will always be a good friend 🤓
This is the best version of the song well done Pet shop Boys 👍
How charming can this man be?
Pet shop boys have the best Two covers in history Go west and always on my mind. They made them their .
I totally agree. They nailed both.

I love these song sooo much❤️❤️❤️👍
OMG.... I was touched to get to know that Pachelbel Canon's was related to this song !
Yes, it provided the chord structure. The melody laid over it is different and an original work of the composer.

Amazing rendition by the wonderful Pet Shop Boys but The Village People’s version is indeed FABULOUS
I just realised that Go West is based on the former USSR and todayd Russian Anthem!
And Pachelbel's Canon in D.

Both songs are actually based on Pachelbel’s Canon
This needs cancelled
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT
Best pop duo of all time!!
What an Amazing Song
I liked the original. Village People were a fun and camp band. But PSB really made it so much better!
I'm sure Chris, after choosing to cover 'Go West', is very proud of it becoming a football anthem, especially when Arsenal are playing.
Interesting history of "Go West".

+Dave Raval LOL.
The Petshop boys version is miles better than the original , they made it sound so energic and full of life, like their album Very.
The original one had balls, because of the time period it came out. That's THE main thing the cover doesn't have.

Да типа хватит уже это противостояние после 41-45 гг. Да про хододный занавес. И не только

Looking at the development in the west is almost melancholic. Depressing.
Gosh I never realised that this song was about AIDS and Go West was about going west to California, I thought it was about comunisium and how life would be better in the West comparied to the East! Wow!
But it is!
This could be applied to anyone's personal aspirations, from moving to another state, to changing one's country, as it was in my case.

Вы просто не жили у нас на Дальнем востоке. Здесь прелесть,тайга, океан, ...поэтому нет смысла писать сразу обо всем плохом, под словом "Восток"
It wasn't about AIDS, since it wasn't even around when the Village People wrote it.

ha, the last sentence is really nice =D
nice analysis, thank you.
Mi juventud Popera y Rokera intensa y dinámica , hasta SIEMPRE .

what about the backround singers? i heard it was broadway NY dudes. piano lady nice but so what.

Matt's Bizarre Adventure
I have no regrets being born a woman, except for the fact that I have no chance in hell with this extraordinary charming gay man.
Oh my gosh exactly this, you took the words right out of my mouth.
Крис ведь сказал ,что есть одна ориентация. Человеческая. After all, Chris said that there is one orientation - Human.
1:12 Dear Neil, isn't it "There where the air is FREE...", instead of "CLEAR"? I'm beginning to think that I know your songs better than you ;)
😀
The Village People version is fine. It belongs to that period and it was catchy.
Yes... then, there in the middle, we put the lime in the Tea. Because we are always so modest, us Brits. If you care to think of it.
Go west is a songs Russian
And going west is what people did haha. Love the PSB though
Ukraine: Go west
it sounds like the soviet union anthem
Repetition... Girls love repetition! Anything slightly challenging & they loose interest!
Girls? They're talking about pop music in general. Senseless to focus on gender.
Says the guy who can't spell "lose" lmao
Talk about not having a clue what the song is about 😂
