Inverted "V" pattern is very cool but old school. "S" pattern is definitely effective and my choice to camo up. "Warrior" pattern is interesting but more scary than camo invisible.
I think it would be very interesting to see a demonstration video comparing the visibility of individuals wearing appropriate camouflaged uniforms, but bare faces, and individuals with both face and body camouflage.
The issue I see with the "warrior style" camo is how the black contrasts with the white of the eyes, it's a dead giveaway. It could be depending on the person's anatomy, of course everyone's different in that regard, but the Scandinavian S strikes me as the most effective in the last scene. I had a harder time to pick out his face than I did with the warrior camo, due to the bold black color and the white of his eyes being in stark contrast to one another.
The s pattern was pretty good but the t pattern was easier to notice. The pattern that basically made the face disappear was the "warrior" pattern. That was an awesome face paint!
Had to do a double take as I legit thought you somehow removed his head... safe to say if I saw that, he’d have no problem taking me out as I’d still be try to comprehend what I thought was surely a trick of the eyes (which it is). Amazing work!
That's the nature of the BSR facility. Man, One Shepherd was out there for 9 days straight - and there was ALWAYS some other agency out training! Constantly. Funny thing is that they were often using blankfire, too. We had to be very careful to stay in our assigned training AO (which was pretty huge) and not wander off. Otherwise, Warriors from some other agency would mistake us for their simulation! Not good! But awesome to see.
I can't get into specifics becuz of how classified and how covert my specific unit was but when we did black ops and missions of that nature we were taught completely different...... United States Boy Scouts. 1985-1992.....by the way I would give more details on the face painting but my mom could only afford the lower end brand stuff....unlike jimmy... Jimmy always had the expensive stuff! I hate jimmy.
Corporal in the British army here. Very much agree with your opinion of our use of face paint....poor effect but quick. Excellent video. Please do more with more information and back round. Greatly appreciated. I tip my beret to you
I really feel like the warrior face paint was the most effective. My reasoning being, it accounts for the head wear of the soldier in this scenario. The boonie hat is going to create a shadow and then that shadow fades into the most common color in the environment (in this case, green). It hides the features of the face by only having 2 colors that fade into each other, just like a shadow being cast onto a leaf. Like legit, if there was a way to camo the white of his eyes, then it'd be perfect. Thats just my opinion though
Thub up. Outstanding material. Thank you very much Brent! And big thank you for Christopher for sharing his knowledge. Greetings From Poland :-) BTW. I think scary face blended in the best :-D
The S pattern looks like it works the best, I think thats down to the minimal brown paint used. That shade of brown seems too light for that environment, the face paint that I use has a much darker shade of brown that I think would blend into that woodland environment better.
From this video and the last one, I'd say the top 3 styles in order of effectiveness (in my humble opinion) are: 1. Improv warrior 2. South Korean 3. S Style
in australia we are taught not to apply anything above the eyes to stop cam paint running into your eyes as just about everything above the eyes is covered by headgear
I remember I found out about shadows being interpreted as depth when I was a kid. I tried closing one eye once and seeing what it did to my depth perception, and I did alright
I'd like to note that these examples are just that: examples. Places to start and instruction on how to understand shading to break up facial structure. Very little if ever would these patterns actually be followed because you don't just do what you see in the manual. You shade and blend, and use colors to match your environment. i.e. grass plains with browns and tans would necessitate the use of long strips of light browns and tans to appear as the environment you're operating in.

@@christopherlarsen7788 My God, you're a trip! I read all of that in your voice lol! We'll keep the limelight on in case you change your mind. Best of luck.
I thought about this in the last video, but I don't think I actually commented it. You bring up the idea that there's no black in nature, and when you said that in the last video I was thinking how interesting that is, and that I would only change that by one word to say that there's no black in _living_ nature. Dead animals decay into black, usually a sludge, in a process like putrefaction or liquefaction. Your comment about forest fires is the same concept- living trees aren't black, but when they burn they turn black from the carbon left behind after the fire. Black exists in nature most commonly after death has occurred. I wouldn't necessarily consider the black coloration in the fur of an animal, for example, as much of an example of black in nature. I think that's too literal. Black coloring is an adaptive mechanism meant to preserve life in almost every case. Usually it's for camouflaging the animal if it's small, although some predators have black on them in the reverse of a shadow ("countershading") to actually make them more visible, to project an "I'm not the type to hide, so don't mess with me" sort of message. So I wouldn't necessarily count this specific occurrence of the color black since it's an adaptive mechanism, kind of an afterthought nature had, but opinions will surely vary. I also remember from your last video about face camo that you said black reminds the human mind of death, and I thought that was even more interesting because you said it right as I was thinking that the bulk of black coloration in nature comes less from "nature" and more from "dead nature," or rather, the process of bacteria and fungus and such, breaking down dead animals, in a process that wouldn't occur if the animal was still alive. All super interesting stuff. These videos are absolutely fascinating. Nature is a genius, and humans are absolutely brilliant at exploring and explaining and taking advantage this genius. I'd be interested to see a video about examples of some of the most important Biomimicry in military technology too. That'd be awesome. Night vision, airplane wings, Boston Dynamics' "robot dogs", taking inspiration from squid skin for camouflage technology... You'd probably have to focus on future tech, but it'd be fascinating nonetheless!
They made a great team together during the 3-day FTX Simulation. AND...(sssh, secret) I think One Shepherd is going to recruit Pegasus as a Cadre Instructor in the not-so-distant future. Muh-Ha-Ha. MUH-HA-HA!!!
That last one in the treeline while the camera zoomed in, it looked for quite a bit like the cover was just floating that was trippy and definitely working.
Enjoyed the video. I've never seen #2 or #3 before, from a distance they look as if they blend better with that environment. Your instructor sure keeps your attention. I'd love to join the group but just to damn old. Stay safe.
Easy! Apply whole bottle of skin lotion to face, then stick face in sand! Desert camo 101! See the dune, Become the dune, but beware giant spice worms and glowing blue eyed clairvoyant people!
It would be really cool to see a video with a Black ,Hispanic, and White subject and how the how the face paint should be modified for their different skin colors.
Its the exact same. I'm an active duty Marine infantryman. Regardless of race, human skin has natural oils that reflect light and cause your skin to reflect light, so even if your skin is perfectly blended in already, you still need to put on camo paint. I'm Hispanic and pretty tan, but I put it on every time I'm in the field. The paint we use isn't very transparent, so it'll look almost the same for everyone.
You ever try that newfangled "Carbo Mask" brand of camo paint? Aimed at hunters and the like. Not an oil-based cream, but rather made up of primarily activated charcoal and water. Advertises itself as being more breathable and not as zit-inducing. It dries as the water evaporates, only leaving remaining layer of charcoal on top.
The last one is definitely look like a klingon tribal warrior, but I can't decide its came from the pre Khaales or the post Khaales era. Anyway the next leson could be the how camo your facein urban/desert areas... May it be?
The concepts are the same, lightening shadows and darkening high spots to disguise the recognizable shape of a human face. The colors are pretty much all that differs, as far as I'm aware. I would love to find out there's more to it than I'm aware of though. It'd be an interesting video I'd watch either way.
One day with the advancements in materials camo uniforms will probably be able to possibly match it's environment simply from the light bouncing off it's surroundings
I remember people would give me shit because I'd do a pattern, mostly because the mouth breathers in my unit somehow thought the standard was "tactical blackface". In a desert. They were teaching this during EIB. I would do the American style like in the last video.
The S pattern did not show until the camera was almost fully zoomed on his face and if he was wearing proper camo with proper swedish gear would render him almost invisible to the eye in a pine three forest also keep in mind swedes adds small pine branches to the helmets to further add to the environment
This is really great, but one thing that stands out to me - the paint is still really glossy, and in that gloss you can still make out the form of the face. Not saying this wouldn't be effective - it totally would be. I just wonder if there's a way to remove that gloss, and maybe go a bit darker that way.
I still cant wrap my head around that shade of brown. Maybe it looks better in the fall. If there's another shade of Brown out there I'd consider that one.
It's not my favorite either. A bit too reddish-yellow. But the cool thing is that it actually does break up the darker colors with a lighter color, giving greater effect at distance. The dark brown (that I'd actually prefer) wouldn't offer that breakup effect.
@@christopherlarsen7788 You're probably right about the dark brown but if used with that green and used more for creative effect instead of a primary purpose. Meaning, you could use a toothpick or a branch (in this case using the cream type of paint instead of the compact or sticks) to create branch lines or you could streak brown lines through your black and green to further disrupt the face. I once had a buddy outline an oak leaf on my face with the black/loam on each side but not side by side. I then filled that in with green. If we had the brown back in my day I may have used it for the fall or even streaked through it all to look like branches. Keep in mind you are usually camoed before your mission starts which mean you should have time to get detailed and use a mirror.
@@ScottyM1959 - Again, agreed. In the downtime before a mission, I usually found time to paint my face and the faces of my team, squad, etc. First off the bird (or track) we did our best with the details unique to that specific environment. After the first day or so, the camo was far more sloppy...but still far more effective than nothing. Yeah?
Dr. Larsen is a great artist and instructor. At 16:49, (from left to right) the 1st one looks too simetric but good enough from medium/long distance; the 2 others look good from any distance; the 2nd one looks like a vegetable and the 3rd one looks like a beast. Good job!
honestly the warrior one when I pause at the end it looks like his cover is floating then again there in a heavily green area and him having mostly green on his lower face only adds to the concealment the S pattern worked well but the T Id have shoot at that the moment I even registered it as a wtf moment over all the first one not as good but the second and third Id be dead before I was able to fire a shoot
Ah screw it just do the "Brave Heart" face camo, paint one half your face blue. Only kidding but seriously, Dr. Larsen, how did the Jungle Warfare School in Panama teach to camo paint the face? I would think any of these 3 would work.
Brent0331, Enjoy the videos, some of us need more information, How do you properly camouflage a human face when your wearing eyeglasses? You do not want to wear contact lens in the field. Most glasses have large polycarbonate lens will reflect light. Any input on the subject would help.
DOCTOR Larsen? What's his practice? That's awesome! Scandinavian S does rock! Just wish there were a few more colors. I really enjoyed the shit out of this (Dr. Larsen), and you are the best cock scribbler I've ever seen! On a serious note, other than the question about what kind of doctor Larsen is, is whether or not they could tweek the program a bit for those of us who've been in the military (Army, Combat Medic, in my case), shorten the patrolling aspects to a more condensed, "OH YEAH! I remember that now!" session and then focus the rest on modern weapons training, medical/trauma training and urban warfare and combat driving techniques? Maybe throw in some legal advice about when to shoot and when not too, shooting past a hostage, knife throwing (and actually making that shit effective, whether it's a K-Bar or your EDC pocket folding combat killer). I'm psyched about going to this if I can afford it! I need it to be on the Eastern Seaboard though, since I live in Alabama.
Notice he is not subjecting these guys to the uncle sam issued cammy sticks..there is always one thing that they forget to teach soldiers/marines about this cammy stuff. HOW TO GET IT OFF. god I remember wearing that S pattern crap. that was the style when I first went in way back in 82. once again Brother great vid.
To me look like ww2 best to hide in mud and leafs the other 2 i would say worked in there surroundings Would like to see how the native americans did there face paints and vs the modern face paint

lmao instructor reminds me of my sergeant in basic training at 09:50
I thought about this in the last video, but I don't think I actually commented it.
The Swedish forces basically only uses black and green face paint
Awesome to see brent and Pegasus tests in one video, great guys both of them.
Yup, good guy! He and I ran the squad, couldn't have asked for a better APL during the FTX.
They made a great team together during the 3-day FTX Simulation.
AND...(sssh, secret) I think One Shepherd is going to recruit Pegasus as a Cadre Instructor in the not-so-distant future. Muh-Ha-Ha. MUH-HA-HA!!!
@@christopherlarsen7788 Damn Doc you are evil.
Stay safe.
Don't let it stop you brother, there are plenty of One Shepherd Alumni that are 50+ still out training.
@@Brent0331 Thanks.
@Brent0331 Can you also show how to properly camo face for a desert environment?
Easy! Apply whole bottle of skin lotion to face, then stick face in sand! Desert camo 101! See the dune, Become the dune, but beware giant spice worms and glowing blue eyed clairvoyant people!
I'm not expert but I'd say use the same techniques but substitute green for a sand colour
I just messed up my sister's whole makeup kit doing this shit . I'm dead .......
The dude with the Apache face paint is a G
It would be really cool to see a video with a Black ,Hispanic, and White subject and how the how the face paint should be modified for their different skin colors.
Its the exact same. I'm an active duty Marine infantryman. Regardless of race, human skin has natural oils that reflect light and cause your skin to reflect light, so even if your skin is perfectly blended in already, you still need to put on camo paint. I'm Hispanic and pretty tan, but I put it on every time I'm in the field. The paint we use isn't very transparent, so it'll look almost the same for everyone.
One Shepherd should procure hemp made ACUs with canadian army style buttons to replace most of the velcro.
Agreed. Too much Velcro!
"I read them for the articles"
Me too
Where do you find those modern style combat jackets in M81? Great video Brent, thanks for the content and info!
I hope there is more footage to come from this training experience Brent...hint...hint....
There is brother, its coming. I gotta sit down and start putting it all together.
Have not tried that! Sounds cool. I'm too old to be getting acne after the One Shepherd semester. Dang it.
I salute this doctor general
And I return the salute, my fine sir!
South Africa just used all black and it were really effective
Well done, nice explaining
Dude, the second guy has amazing military bearing. I would have been losing it with Dr. Larsen talking the whole time
One day with the advancements in materials camo uniforms will probably be able to possibly match it's environment simply from the light bouncing off it's surroundings
Me I love the South Korean style in the last face camo video in my opinion
The SK technique is a surprisingly effective camo pattern for the human face.
Christopher Larsen I know I use the pattern in Airsoft
So anymore footage from this springs semester at one shepard
Yup, Iots. Videos to come.
Goof video brother keep up the good work
I'd say the scandinavian S worked the best out of those, and not just because I'm scandinavian.
I remember people would give me shit because I'd do a pattern, mostly because the mouth breathers in my unit somehow thought the standard was "tactical blackface". In a desert. They were teaching this during EIB. I would do the American style like in the last video.
Where does 1Shepherd get their uniforms. I love to OD and Woodland ACUs.
The last one the "monster face" was actually the hardest to see ass well
The guy on the right does look like a "monster" / ancient warrior -- nice!
As I'm writing, if anyone helps you with your face camo always check for a.....then doc says penis lol
👍 I love our brotherhood and humor.
But “ Mericam “ is effective in all terrains.
I think the Warrior one is pretty interesting, it's so weird, it really confuses the mind and makes you feel scared.
The S pattern did not show until the camera was almost fully zoomed on his face and if he was wearing proper camo with proper swedish gear would render him almost invisible to the eye in a pine three forest also keep in mind swedes adds small pine branches to the helmets to further add to the environment
The Swedish camo be a bunch of weird triangles though, and I don't see any battles being fought in the land of shapes.
This is really great, but one thing that stands out to me - the paint is still really glossy, and in that gloss you can still make out the form of the face. Not saying this wouldn't be effective - it totally would be. I just wonder if there's a way to remove that gloss, and maybe go a bit darker that way.
It typically goes on pretty wet looking but dries up.
@@Brent0331 - Agreed. It dries flat. Not shiny.
this Drill instructor has me Cracking the fuck up! this is #gold

Good job!
Thank you, sir!
Amazing
I was laughing so hard at 6:47😂
awesome thanks
Thanks or watching.
Wait... is the first guy pegasus test from the giveaway contest ? I just re-watched it recently and I'm pretty sure that's him !
You are correct. That’s me!
Yup, you don't see him in this video but Richard Santiago was in the contest as well and he was up there.
honestly the warrior one when I pause at the end it looks like his cover is floating then again there in a heavily green area and him having mostly green on his lower face only adds to the concealment the S pattern worked well but the T Id have shoot at that the moment I even registered it as a wtf moment over all the first one not as good but the second and third Id be dead before I was able to fire a shoot
i love you larsen!
Hey I was wondering, what is you MOS? Is it 0311, 0331 or something completely different?
Ah screw it just do the "Brave Heart" face camo, paint one half your face blue. Only kidding but seriously, Dr. Larsen, how did the Jungle Warfare School in Panama teach to camo paint the face? I would think any of these 3 would work.
What brand of camo paint is used in this video?
Hunter's Specialty creme' tube available through Walmart and many other retailers online.
great ASMR camouflage
Awesome
the less effort ones seem to work better
Brent0331, Enjoy the videos, some of us need more information, How do you properly camouflage a human face when your wearing eyeglasses? You do not want to wear contact lens in the field. Most glasses have large polycarbonate lens will reflect light. Any input on the subject would help.
Just wear your glasses, you dont have a choice. Just have a set that have a flat "tactical" color for the frames.
Is it just me or does the guy in the thumbnail with the face paint look like a young Gendry Baratheon of Storms End from GoT
16:48 I don't know what that final shot of empty woods was for.....
Notice he is not subjecting these guys to the uncle sam issued cammy sticks..there is always one thing that they forget to teach soldiers/marines about this cammy stuff. HOW TO GET IT OFF. god I remember wearing that S pattern crap. that was the style when I first went in way back in 82. once again Brother great vid.
the last one looks like a teenage mutant ninja turtle
...or Capn. Jack🐥
To me look like ww2 best to hide in mud and leafs the other 2 i would say worked in there surroundings
Would like to see how the native americans did there face paints and vs the modern face paint
Oh, he is saying "depth" not "death"
