Most of the time is true, but not always. Some Latinos with indigenous heritage can easily be mistaken as Asian. I'm Filipino, sometimes I mistaken Latinos as Asians. Latinos always mistaken me as Latina. lol
I'm Filipino born and raised in the U.S., and my best friend is Indian, also born and raised in the U.S. We both knew we were Asian because that's the continent where our parents' respective countries are located. Imagine our confusion when, growing up, people kept saying I was Hispanic/Pacific Islander and my friend was Middle Eastern. It gave us both unnecessary identity crises for a few years, when in reality we were right all along: we're Asian.
You belong to the same continent but Asia is really large which in reality you are really different from each other since Filipinos and Indians have different genetics, looks and culture. Only the people of the world divide the land to continents and it happened that you were included in the same piece of large land but if the division tried to divide Asia into other two continents then you would probably accept that you would be different.
@@andrearoces8597 A lot of Northeast Indians look similar to Filipinos. But their land was sort of added to India about 150 years ago and they still maintain a different culture than the rest of India (plus there's tons of racism that's thrown around between them and the "main" Indians)
I've met some Filipinos who look like white Spaniards, some who look like latinos, and some who look straight up Chinese. They all seem to have one commonality though -- they speak English with this peculiar accent that I can't easily describe. They also sound like they speak 3 languages in one sentence.
The accent has the heavy R sound that countries like Australia and England don't have, very American sounding and they use this sound when talking to foreigners. The R becomes more Spanish and they tend to roll it when speaking Espanol or Tagalog. Most Filipinos can pronounce the F sound like when they want to say Philippines, however usually substitute the F for a P because of their language. B and V are also indistinguishable
@Rock Roll Middle Eastern countries like Saudi or UAE are West Asian countries. So yes, they are Asians. As for Russia, large part of it is located in North Asia. In fact, the eastern portion of Russia, mostly encompassing Siberia, is part of Asia and makes up more than 75% of the territory. The people in that portion of Russia are considered as Asians.
@Rock Roll That's not what I said. I just said that the inhabitants of those areas that is still in Asia are called Asians. Asian is not a race but rather a group of peoples that is located in the Asian continent regardless of their race. Melanesian, Mongoloid, Malay, Semitic or whatsoever. Like Arab people in West Asia, people in the eastern part of Russia, Melanesian in Indonesia, Pakistanis and Indians. I honestly don't get why you said "so you think that race is based on the continent?" because I did not even mention any thing about race in my comment. Can you at least quote what I said to create such assumptions that I did say such a thing instead of just calling me a "fucking retarded?"
Im Indonesian. I always consider Filipinos as our brothers and sisters in Southeast Asia family. Yes we are asian. But we are also part of the bigger Austronesian family spreading from madagaskar to hawaii. Indonesia once colonised by the Dutch for almost 300 years too. But we are not convenience to say that we are part or anything remotely related to them. Dont get me wrong, we are still respecting them as a sovereign nation tho. But we are decided to maintain our culture and identity as a pride to bond the people. Btw, langit is also means sky in Indonesia, just like mata means eyes, or sepuluh means ten. And btw, Filipinos people are beautiful. Respect to y'all brothers and sisters from me in Jakarta. I hope one day southeast asia and the bigger austronesian family will develop even further, just like europe. After all, we are all one big family as human race.
In our history class, we were taught that the Spanish colonizers would burn any relics they encountered, possibly to influence our ancestors to convert to Christianity and erase traces of their original way of life. Despite our desire to preserve our culture like our neighbors did, much of it has already been lost. The Spaniards even derogatorily referred to our ancestors as "mang-mang," which isn't true at all given the intricate designs of many artifacts recovered in far flung areas. Heck a writing system was even discovered, but it was already too late since most Filipinos got used to the foreign alphabets.
In Malaysia, children in school were taught history that people from Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines were interconnected for a very long time because our ancestors sail across the islands to live and trade.
@People said my Username was Offensive i know, the negritos, they are natives of whole southeast asia, but they look like melanesians, they are related to melanesians, but they have our modern day southeast asian DNA
@People said my Username was Offensive asian is a geographical term... and negritos, melanesians are far away genetically from africans. southeast asians are closest related to them, and most negritos have our DNA from when southeast asians from south china migrated downwards
The strange thing here, Filipinos living in Philippines never knew about this argument whether Filipinos are Asians or islanders... Only Filipinos raised in the USA have such argument
Can confirm, some paperworks here in the US (like when I was applying for college and I had to check what my race is), Filipinos were categorized under “Pacific Islanders”.
american race/ethnicity categories are confusing as fuck. sometimes filipinos are considered asian, sometimes we're considered pac. islander, sometimes we have our own damn category lmao 💀 it doesn't help that a lot of white people and east asians don't consider us asians because we're brown lmao.
Not all FilAms. Most Filipinos here in the U.S. consider themselves Asian and are seen as such. It's usually the self-hating types who don't want to be considered "Asian", no matter how hard they try to fool themselves. Some FilAms however are really that ignorant of their culture, smh. There are some people (small percentage) who don't consider Filipinos Asian because they are darker, and the lighter Filipinos are often considered mixed, even if they're facial features look obviously Filipino. Those small percentage of people really can't see pass skin color, smh.
Filipinos, Having a Spanish last names, Cook some Chinese foods, Good at speaking English. Edit: guys listen, I said GOOD not better nor best in English because I didn't compare it to anything else. I said, "Cook SOME Chinese food, Im not saying the majority of the dishes are of Chinese influence. And lastly having a Spanish last name is kinda self explanatory, so go figure.
Im Filipino and one of the funniest memories I had was when my mom was applying for a job in the US. In the application, when she went to the ethnicity part, she got confused. She said, “Anak, alam ko Asian tayo pero malapet din tayo sa Pacific ocean. So Asian ba lalagay ko o Pacific Islander” 😂😂 Needless to say we were both laughing so hard
@@geliram Honestly, nobody here considers themselves "Hispanic". Maybe some super rich families do, but there's only a handful of them, and they probably don't speak (nor feel) Spanish at all. Ethnicity is not a big thing here. In legal papers, you only have to state your nationality.
Hello to all my Filipino cousins. I am a Merina (Austronesian ethnic group in Madagascar). :) I just want to say that I love you all. When they compared the words in different Austronesian (Tagalog, Samoan, etc) languages at the end of the video, I recognized a lot of words that were either the same in Malagasy (my language) or very similar. Much love to you all ♥️
At the last part where they were counting, the woman was counting in Cebuano (Separate Filipino languge) not Tagalog. But the word for mata and langit are the same for both.
The Lego Series when I was a young man in the navy we a Filipino corpsman, we got into heavy seas in North Atlantic I got slammed into a bulkhead where I laid for many hours till he hears me murmuring help me. He pulled me from the void space feet first and resuscitated me and patched the hole in my skull.
Philippines also had connection with India, their are hundreds of loan words like budhi , guro , mukha , laho , bagay etc with sanskrit orgin , Philippines was Hindu, Buddhist and Animistic majority islands until Spanish arrived, Philippines was called has Maharlika in India, meaning " land of wealth , knowledge and ability " love from India to my brothers and sisters of Philippines 🇮🇳 ❤ 🇵🇭
Philippines and most of our brown asian neighbors are austronesians, we have more ties to people in the pacific Islands compared to lighter skinned asians (oriental) aka Chinese, korean, Japanese, mongolians etc. , our languages are very similar with other people from the pacific islands so is our dna 😄, so as a Filipino with a brain, yes we are located in asia but that doesnt make me asian( we dont call jews, arabs, and Russians asians even tho they are also in asia lol) i am a pacific islander,

Hehehe i was at pharmacy recently and there were customers and bell went and all staff stopped for 5 minutes bell rung and all back to customers. A few of the shops i buy lots from shut 12 to 1 pm for lunch. Eating is a big part of their life. The still laugh loudly and sing anywhere and smile and say please and thankyou and are courteous and generally pleasant to be with. Things many Australians have forgotten or dont do.
Many filipinos who are living in the Philippines do not get this context. Because if you are living in the US you'll probably encounter this questions from foreign people, but in the Philippines filipinos just think that filipinos are asian.
In the US, their social security form has a tick box for race. That's why it's an issue to them. And some Filipinos in the past were made to claim that they were Pacific Islanders and not Asians in these tick boxes. It's not an issue of our identity. It's an issue which arose out of their obsession for racial profiling.
Because the American point of view is limited. They don’t see that Asia has a multitude of cultures and people. And simply calling everybody Asian is oversimplified. While just using Asians to refer to Chinese, Japanese and Koreans is misleading. Filipinos, racially are Malay. You can see the similarities with Indonesians and Malaysians both in looks and the language. We have nearly nothing in common with Polynesians which is what the term Pacific Islander seem to be referring to.
King Jay it's not that hard really, just look in a mirror and you can tell what race you are. Majority of filipinos look like a mix of chinese, japanese and southeast asian countries. I'll give you 1m pesos if you can find someone looking like a Spanish and Hawaiian in metro manila.
Ahhhh, HELLOOO...EXCUSE ME...as your comment, as you may say, doesn’t make any fucking sense at all...”Many filipinos who are living in the Philippines...” are you fucking kidding me, brah...of course, filipinos are the PHILIPPINES...just like you’re saying, like...”Many Japanese who are living in Japan,” HOW STUPID COMMENT THAT IS, YAH...like, “Many Americans who are living in the U.S.,” 😂😂😂😱😱😱🤬🤬🤬
i went to school in the philippines for a year and they don’t have this argument. they literally say filipinos are asians so why is this even a discussion at this point lool
so glad he mentioned the original BLACK filipinos...and they are still very much around but as usual, on the lowest end of the economic scale and never shown on the brochures luring tourists...
Ali Abu-Talib they aren’t technically black as in African black their ethnic origin is from South East Asia and they share more genetic similarities with eastern asians
Canada Top Goons no their black but black isn’t a one size fit all. Every other race comes from black that’s genetic facts not an opinion that’s why you can find blackish looking people almost anywhere in the world but you can’t do the same with the other races
I'm Filipino yet i've never called myself a Pacific Islander or Hispanic. I've also never wondered whether if I could be one of them. I simply wonder why some Filipino's consider themselves Islanders or Hispanic. I've always called myself Asian. The Philippines has always been called an Asian country by multiple census around the world. The only people who say Filipino's aren't Asians are gullible people who believe in Asian stereotypes.
I'm not really sure of the facts but i think it's because of colonial mentality. A lot of people don't like being ya know asian and so they want to be more like countries from the west in terms of identity. It's kinda sad but i guess that's what happens when a country has been ruled over by people who tried to instill how glorious the west is for around three centuries
Your country was named after King Philip of Spain You have Spanish last names, 40% of Tagalog language are from Spanish, you practice catholic from Spain Your country was colonized for more than 300 years. You are Hispanic Asians
@@stevenliang3213 No, Pinoys aren't hispanic. The term Hispanic refers to a person of a spanish speaking country. So our names, the name of our country, the years we spent under the Spaniards and our religion doesn't mean anything.
Glydel Alcantara : Hispanic is a culture, not a race. It’s any country that is relating to Spanish influence (doesn’t have to be Spanish speaking). FYI, Spanish was the official language of The Philippines for more than 3 centuries at one point. It’s possible to be Hispanic and Asian at the same time. Filipinos are just not conventional Hispanic nor conventional Asian. That’s all.
I am Vietnamese and I don't care who the Filipinos are: Asian, Hispanic or whatever.... To me the Filipinos are one of the best and the sweetest people in South East Asia. Love you brothers.
I've never heard of the term "Pacific Islander" until I was in college. We were taught as Philippines to be part of Southeast Asia, thus obviously making us Asians. I think it's just the confusion of Filipino-Americans who really didn't grow up here.
Filipinos are not Asians because Asians refer to east Asians, mainland Chinese, Koreans and Japanese. Philippines is ethnically Austronesians or what is commonly called Pacific islanders. Our DNA is different to Asians.
@@___Anakin.Skywalkeryour obviously wrong lol .....stop making assumptions get your facts right Austronesian came from mainland China (but not Han chines) to Taiwan and spread across the pacific region, not the other way around... Austronesian came from mainland Asia from the start so it's obviously Asian pilipinos are Asian, Southeast Asian with Austronesian blood Ancetry and language that came from mainland Asia...
@@___Anakin.Skywalker lol colonial mentality did you learn Philippines history? or inshort your racist Calling Filipinos as Pacific islanders it's means you have colonial mentality. Philippines is a former U.S colony. Filipinos labelling as Pacific islanders is a product of colonialism in short American colonial legacy. American calling Filipinos as Pacific islanders it's based on colonial legacy and purely political nothing do with genetics, history and cultures. Our ancestors, the Austronesians, originated in Southern China and Taiwan, and they're the reason why Filipinos exist today. Austronesian people is originated in Southern East China migrating to taiwan then enter the Philippines bringing their cultures, languages, influence and traditions in our country they are the reason why we Filipinos exist today. U.S census classifying Austronesian is a languages family instead of genetics ancestry they already ruin the Austronesian race of Filipinos because U.S census labelling Austronesian is a language Family or linguistically related to Austronesian like for Example Austronesian speaking melanesian, Austronesian speaking Polynesian, Austronesian speaking micronesian and I can't deny we sharing some genetics but it's not accurate labelling Austronesian is language family. So why did the American colonial legacy government label Filipinos as Pacific Islanders? Frankly, it's a gross oversimplification and a disservice to our heritage. The truth is, Filipinos have strong connections with our neighbors in East and Southeast Asia, both culturally and geographically. The American colonial legacy government's attempt to categorize Filipinos as Pacific Islanders was misguided and damaging. It not only misrepresented our identity but also reinforced harmful stereotypes and misconceptions. By erasing our Southeast Asian roots and lumping us into a category that doesn't accurately reflect who we are, they undermined our sense of belonging and perpetuated a distorted image of the Philippines. But here's the thing: we won't let their colonial legacy define us. We know who we are-proud Southeast Asians with a rich and diverse heritage. It's time to reclaim our identity and celebrate our Austronesian roots. So to anyone still clinging to outdated labels, hear this loud and clear: Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders, and it's about time you recognize and respect that.
It is no question. What is as fact a lie made by modern purely asian filipinos who have zero genetic genes from the indiginous peoples of 500 years ago. They get confused bc they want to find out about who they truly are & where they come from. Filipino’s are Filipino’s, it doesn’t matter if they live in America or not. We are all Filipino’s we just live in different areas that make us think differently, no thinking is better than the other. The Asian Theory, Spain indeed occupied the Philippines for 300 years but the identity of the Philippines and the Filipinos never changed. The Indians didn't have identity crisis just because the Brits occupied their country. So is Indonesia which was occupied by the Dutch. Exactly. Just tired of people get confused to our ethnicity and then when we till you what we are then those people get butthurt and cries we are Asian. Yeah we are asian nobody's claimining were not..
Wavemaker Exactly. I once had a long discussion over this because the person was trying to change historical narrative by claiming ALL Filipinos spoke primarily Spanish until the US arrived. Even in their household. Stating, “ your great grandmother spoke Spanish, not Tagalog, Bisayan, etc.”. Pretty much trying to poison young minds with false information based on select and very eurocentric written books written by ( drumroll ) Europeans!

Same happens to Mexican Americans and Mexico is next door In the US race MATTERS A LOT More than anywhere else in the world, so they try to profile everything based on “race
I am Filipino American, and I can explain some things about this identify crisis. When Filipinos immigrate to the US, they often end up in very diverse areas with whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc. 1) of those groups, Hispanics are most like Filipinos culturally. I went to a catholic school, and Hispanics were at school, at the church, there were no Koreans or Chinese there. Our names we’re the same as the Mexicans. We even liked boxing. The Chinese and Koreans often keepnto themselves and are quiet. Hispanic people and filipinos share way more in common in almost every aspect compared to Chinese or Koreans. Even by looks. Most Chinese and Koreans were light skinned and many Filipinos often look like indigenous Mexican Indians, and vice versa: many Mexicans could pass for Filipino if they wanted. 2) when filling out forms your race is often asked. Usually there is white, black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian and pacific islander. It’s actually kid of confusing as Filipinos because yes we are indeed on an island in the pacific! Chinese, Koreans, and Vietnamese obviously don’t come from islands but we do. You often fill out forms from a young age, and it never gets properly explained to you, so in my younger years I often checked Pacific Islander sometimes. Because in my mind, an asian was Chinese or Korean . If anything I looked more like a Hawaiian than a Korean and they were Pacific Islanders and I came from a pacific island, so wouldn’t I be a Pacific Islander?
First, some filipinos really love to be something else aside from being asian or south east asia. They cannot fathom that when they take an ancestry test (they are mostly asian descent). Also remember that filipinos back then in the Spanish colonial era, pretend to be meztiza de sangley (mixed of filipino, chinese and spanish) even though they are just a mixed of chinese ancestry. That's why filipino associate having pale skin as being "tisay" (meztiza) though they don't have spanish ancestry. the possibility of it is we have much more chinese ancestry than spanish because of the close proximity to china. Yes, the manila galleon trade happened but as what i always say, it didn't happen like everyday. Pacific Ocean is big and because of that it receive less immigrants and influence. For me, it is actually kind of insulting to other hispanics and pacific islanders when we are claiming their identity.

I think people need to understand our ancestors moved around a lot in their time. we todate doing same thing and married into other races too. I am Samoan/German. German ruled Samoa at one time. we became independent. I met Brazilians in the UK in my 20s. they asked me if I was Brazilian or Argentina. I said nope. they went on to say but I look like them. Born, raised, and educated (kindergarten through university) in the Philippines to parents who have Spanish-French-Filipino (mother) and Chinese-Filipino (father) ancestry. I now live in the US. On any and all forms where I am asked my ethnicity, I always tick Asian unless Filipino is also one of the choices. Filipinos born, raised, and educated in the Philippines are taught in school that the Philippines is in Southeast Asian and we are Asians. The first time I encountered the terms “Hispanic” and “Asia Pacific Islander” as applied to/possibly associated with the Philippines was when I moved to the US 20 years ago. I believe that 2nd generation Filipino-Americans (those born and raised in the US to 2 Filipino parents where either both or 1 parent was born and raised in the Philippines) can or may have the misinformed or mistaken impression that ALL Filipinos as Asian Pacific Islanders. That may be a result of their parents not being clear about the Philippines’ geography and history, or information learned from their environment. Case in point: I was watching tv the other day regarding the creative use of flowers. One of the segments was how to make a simple lei and they had a guest from Hawaii to provide instructions/guidance. As they were talking the host mentioned that she had Filipino ancestry and she confirmed by saying both her parents were originally from the Philippines. Can’t remember how she got to it but she mentioned that 48% of Filipinos consider themselves Asía Pacific Islanders. First words out of my mouth were “oh HELL no!” Don’t know where she got her (mis)information from but it probably only surveyed 2nd generation and onwards Fil-Ams.

It’s a category they made you choose on forms. But Filipinos are scattered from Hawaii to Guam. So yes they are of oriental origin. Depends on how white washed they get in the US. Some married a lot of Caucasian or Hispanic partners and some married Asians cuz they are modern that way and they loved their fellow Asian’s culture and food heritage.
I was never laughed everytime I tell my classmates that I consider myself a Pacific Islander. It's brave enough to state that because I know my ancestry. Why do I consider myself a Pacific Islander? Our family is known for being Voyagers. We basically live and still practice the primitive way of living. We sail the seas to see different Ethnic tribes to help. We prefer to roam the waters and the mountains than the cities. My ethnicity are Aeta, Indonesian and Hispanic. When I was in New Zealand, I was even ask if I am a Maori. As a Filipino, considering yourself whether you are Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islander depends on how your family let you see who you are. Most of Filipinos telling they are Asian and Hispanic are from the cities. Some Filipinos calling themselves Pacific Islanders are mostly from remote and rural areas.
Filipinos worldwide don't say they are Pacific Islanders. Only Filipino Americans claim to be Pacific Islanders. Fil-Ams have no logic to it either. The Fil-Ams will say, that they have the same ancestry as Pacific Islanders, so Filipinos are Pacific Islanders. Ask the Fil-Ams if Malagasy people (Madagascar located in the Indian Ocean) or Indigenous Taiwanese people are Pacific Islanders and Fil-Ams will say no. Yet, they all have the same Austronesian ancestry also. What is more insane, is Fil-Ams will claim Filipino languages are closely related to the Oceanic languages like Hawaiian or Maori, but won't admit Indonesian and Malay are closer when asked. Fil-Ams claim that their writing system uses the Latin alphabet, which is used by Pacific Islanders, thus they are Pacific Islanders. The Fil-Ams ignore the fact, the writing system is European to begin with and adopted by many non-European countries. Fil-Ams won't acknowledge the Baybayin script used before Europeans arrived. Baybayin just like Kulitan, Javanese, Sundanese and other scripts were derived from the Brahmic script from South ASIA. Being Asian is a great thing. The Fil-Ams attempt to hijack Pacific Islanders culture is disgusting.

For all the confusions, Filipinos are Asians. We are a descendant of Austronesians, they were an indigenous group that was found in Asia. East Asian countries are not the measurement of "Asian-ess" since Indians, some part of Russia, Middle East, etc. are Asians as well.

If we're considered Pacific islanders then so is Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia! They're also physically in the Pacific ocean. I believe when they refer to Pacific Islanders they are "mostly" referring to Polynesian peoples. They are similar but different people.
THANK YOU/. EXACTLY. LIKE WTF. So you're telling me Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia are pacific islander? HAHAHAHAH OK. These people try too hard.
It'd not just geographical. Filipinos also have a lot of cultural similarities to polynesians. Japanese culture is more similar to Chinese and Koreans than anything else. It doesn't help that the country is on the Pacific Ocean. I can see why people can get confused. But all in all, we are southeast Asians.
Well Indonesia is huge and its a nationality... if we talk about races.. Indonesia is trans asia pasific.. western part of indonesia considered as asian and us eastern Indonesian (west Melanesian ) wich is West Papua , The Moluccas , and Lesser sunda islands considered to be pasific islanders..
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Islands#Asia Japan is, indeed, a "Pacific Island," as are those others. "In English, the umbrella term Pacific Islands may take on several meanings. Sometimes it refers to only those islands covered by the continent of Oceania.[1][2] In some common uses, the term "Pacific Islands" refers to the islands of the Pacific Ocean once colonised by the Portuguese, Spaniards, Dutch, British, French, United States, and Japanese, such as the Pitcairn Islands, Taiwan, and Borneo.[3] In other uses it may refer to islands with Austronesian linguistic heritage like Taiwan, Indonesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, Myanmar islands, which found their genesis in the Neolithic cultures of the island of Taiwan."
My Grandmothers 1st language was Spanish (born in 1918 Quezon Province). We still have actual photographs of her Spanish Grandfather who settled in the Philippines from his original Alicante Spain.
😂😂😂 sounds like every other wannabe flipping fraudulently claiming Spanish ancestry when you have none whatsoever. Meanwhile my wife is from Guadalajara Jalisco MX with parents born in Spain like myself and we know our ancestry. Filipinos love to make up any claim for Spanish ancestry 😂😂😂
@@alexisarrizon6083 Hhahahah, your statement is bold and factual. More Spaniards went to the New World due to trade and proximity of location. The populations of Spanish who settled in the Philippines was smaller, esp. given the distance. The mestizos in the Philippines today are not directly descended from Spanish as the Spanish back in the day married among their own kind and were tribal and conscious in who they married. In the US and Latin America, our ratio of Spanish ancestry is extremely higher and very well known and documented. Also, unlike the Americas, in 1849 the Philippine Gov't used a book, el Catalogo Alfabeitco de Appellidos, which has upended the myth the most Filipinos have Spanish ancestry but rather their surnames were selected or designated from this book and to families for tax purposes. I've met so many Filipino's who say they are Spanish and claim ancestry but every time I get to asking about their genealogies the stories seem to veer off like, "I gotta go, or I have a call". Very little proof except for a last name. Also, unlike other Asian nations, the Philippines is literally the only country that in order to get a job, whiteness is a value and or to be visibly culturally mixed is a benefit. Throughout the rest of Asia, it's something that is an embarrassment.
Basically, most Filipinos are halo-halo. 😆😆😆 Didn't know people would fight over this comment. Sorry about that. (This was just supposed to be a fun comment.) But based from the history of the Philippines and the people I know of, Filipinos are of mixed blood not only with other Asian countries but also with other countries from other continents. It's not actually like we are boasting having mixed blood. We're just saying the truth. I, myself, have Japanese AND Spanish blood within me but I'm still proud to call myself a Filipino. You people just need to have an open mind and not react so fast with out knowing anything about what you're saying.
Half Filipino/Japanese here. I miss the Philippines especially my lolo's province in Camarines Norte in Bicol and Pasig where I spent my elementary years. Can't wait to visit again after this pandemic. Imma eat my pan bonete bread and pancit 😁
The Philippines is certainly a very unique country as it is the only place in the world where you will find a mix of Spanish and Asian cultures making it interesting ( at least in my opinion)
Its not really unique anymore, i mean many countries claimed theirselves to be Melting Pots or very diverse country, just like Singapore/Malaysia (history wise they constists arab, indians, chinese, dutch and so much more) and like USA/Canada (Because of Migration of a lot of people from around the world and also their history) and so many more countries.
Filipinos with Spanish ancestry are a very small portion of the population. Just because a majority of Filipinos have Spanish-sounding names doesn't mean that they were sired by Spaniards who married natives. Truth is, following their baptisms into the Roman Catholic Church, the natives were given Spanish last names from a book of last names, El Catálogo Alfabético de Apellidos by royal decree.
PREACH! You speak the truth! The Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos started this myth of Spanish ancestry. Unlike the Americas where many of us have direct and legitimate ancestry.
Derived from “Taga-ilog,” which literally means “from the river,” Tagalog is an Austronesian language belonging to the Malayo-Polynesian subfamily, with outside influences from Malay and Chinese, and later from both Spanish and American English through four centuries of colonial rule.
For Malay language, i have disagree with "influence". There are tens or hundreds of languages in Philippinese, and they are considred as part of the Greated Malay language. Part. Not influence. Some share more words than the others. And those words which are shared, are very fundamental ones.
If the out of Taiwan is true, then Tagalog should be older than the languages further south. So in theory, bahasa Indonesia and malay languages should be sharing elements with Philippine languages. Linguistically, it gets complicated as time went on, as cultural exchanges went on.
@god says Did I say they didn't? Also don't call them negritos. thats what the spanish colonizers called them, they're either the Aeta, Agta, Ati, Ayta Maybukon, etc.

I think only North Americans get confused since the word "Asian" to them only means "East Asian". They completely forget that Southeast, South, and Western Asia exist. I live in the UK and I get called Asian. My Filipino friends are called Asian. My Indian friends are called Asian. My Sri Lankan friends are called Asian. I have been to several countries in Europe traveling with my Filipino boyfriend and there's really no confusion or doubt that Filipinos are Asian.
@Latin American is there really a need for profanity? they didnt state that russians ARE asian. they said, "GEOGRAPHICALLY, so are russians." they were speaking in terms of where russia is located since it's next to china and other countries in midwest southwest, etc. asia.
@@ilovedoyoung6139 Russia is European. We need to be clear here we are talking about the PEOPLE. technically USA is also "Asian" as it has land in Asia. Etc etc would you say Australia is more European or more Asian?
So you’re saying that Filipinos are Mexicans long lost Asian Hispanic cousins?!? THATS DOPE!!! I knew this girl that was half Filipino and half Mexican, she was GORGEOUS!
It all started in cross breeding of Mexicans and natives during the Manila-Acapulco Galeon trade. Also the Spanish occupation where a lot of Spanish-Mexican soldiers were assigned to numerous towns in the whole country.
Filipinos are genetically Asian (most Filipinos have no European blood) We speak Asian languages , and eat asian food. You can drop a Spaniard anywhere in Latin America and he or she will get along just fine; and the same is true if you drop a Latin American in Spain. That, however, is most certainly NOT the case if you drop a Spaniard in the Philippines or a Filipino in Spain completely Alien cultures. Despite being Catholic, The Philippines has an overwhelmingly strong South East Asian vibe ... the philippines looks and feels exactly like any other South East Asian country.

We've always been Asians. At least to me, that is. I've never really been confused as to how I would identify myself as, being a Filipino (living in the Philippines). I always have been and always will be an Asian.
Hate to break it to you, but even though a big percentage of our blood is Asian, we identify more as Hispanics. Take away our Hispanic roots, and we will be either malaysian, chinese, or indonesian, thus we will cease to be a Filipino. Filipinos (on the internet) generally hate to admit it, but they are more Hispanic than Asian.
they're not wrong either tho. we were colonized by spaniards for a long time so it's just right for us to be hispanic. geographically speaking, we're asians. before we were asians, we were called as pacific islanders, infact our country's name was "the philippine islands of pacific".
@tom tom Uhmm NOT GONNA LIE BUT FOR US FILIPINOS , SAYING “PACIFIC ISLANDERS “ it’s just so offensive ngl , we didn’t even call ourselves pacific islanders
We have small eyes (probably because im half japanot), I mean Filipinos too have double lid eyes which is an original characteristic of an asian so we don't need to argue. Black hairs, small double lid eyes, brownish like Thai's and Vietnamese, black/brown eyes and we speak like asian. We're definitely asian.
Lol mostly Filipinos have double eyelids and have that big eyes, don't say “We have small eyes” (speak for yourself) just say “i have small eyes”, and Vietnamese are mostly look Chinese especially in the north, same in Thailand (North Thailand), and also what do you mean about "Speak like Asian"? 😭 Lmao Asian is not a language is JUST A CONTINENT, Yes Filipinos are definitely ASIAN cause it's located in Asia, but we look different to those Asian peope that usually people think that the only Asian are those from East Asia (China, Japan, Korea)
Schools teach history and the evolution of the term mestizo (and who it refers to). "Hispanic" may not have been the exact term used but it was taught in schools.

Filipinos are Asian based on geography. But, the heritage and lineage are mixed, so there will be Spanish Filipinos, Amboys, Aetas, Malays, etc. Still the common denominator or base will always be the Asian lineage.
I am Pinoy in America...and it is very common for Latinos to start a conversation with me in Spanish assuming that i am one of them...but Pinoys always know im 100% kabayan!
@Cold HEARTED most of these interactions are the typical day to day activities, like when im at shop buying something and a latino/latina works there, they would just start speaking to me in Spanish. Also, i have dated a Puerto Rican girl before and worked and hanged out with people from all over Latin America..Bolivians, Ecuadorians, Colombians, Cubans, Dominicans,..Im in the NYC tri state area.
We are Asians, though Americanized, but still we think, behave, and see the world around us like Asians. Yes, we have Hispanic influences but they are just material, more like façade (i.e. food, religion, dances, festival, tradition, music). In terms of values and general outlook, it is indeed evident that we are still Asians.
Culturally Hispanic? What about the Mamanwa people of the Visayan islands, the Igorots of Banaue, the Kalingas and Apayaos of the Cordilleras, the Dumagat people, the Lumads and Kalagans of Mindanao, the Muslim brethren, the Badjaos, as well as others unmentioned? They were never conquered by the Spaniards. How would you classify them since they are not predominantly influenced by the empire of Spain nor the Viceroyalty of Mexico? Why do you think there is a movement in changing the name of the Philippines as a country? Because the current name does not represent the collective people as a whole. It only represent the culture of the majority of people who control the government. Philippines is a western concept: Derived from the name of the king of Spain during conquest with the spelling changed by the Americans during their regime to indicate what they desire-the hardwood trees for the expansion of the American naval power (trees = pines). Just so you know.
Only those Filipino-mix raised abroad think that were pacific islanders. Theyre the ones who keeps bringing it up like its the real deal, when in fact its not.
Rock Roll So, you hate being Filipino? Wow, you are aware that some Thais, Indonesians & Malaysians hate us bro cause according to them our culture is a bit different from theirs and that we are poor, so many slums & our cities are dirty. So, be careful what you wish for y buena suerte.
The whole question of whether they are "Asian" or "Pacific Islanders" dates back to the anti-interracial laws in early 20th-century California, where it was illegal to for whites to marry Asians. In court they used the linguistic connection to Pacific Islanders to prove the person was not Asian, and instead a Pacific Islander, thus the court granted them a marriage to the white person (I know, terrible history, but an interesting story.)
That is absolutely correct. Not only that, but mexicans were considered white at that time as well. Many people think that systematic racism only existed up until the emancipation proclamation. Hell, my people barely got the right to practice our culture in the 1980s. Good job on educating people on why some philipino Americans are culturally confused 👌
I’m Filipino and all my siblings are. But my oldest sister keeps saying that we are actually Pacific Islanders but I keep telling her we are ASIAN! Just live on an island in the pacific. We are literally closer to China than Japan is, and we are apart for SouthEast Asia! Like does that mean every country part for southeast Asians are Pacific Islanders? Haha no 😂
Same here. I've never heard about that nonsense outside of comments posted online, mostly because « Pacific Islanders » is some stateside label no one uses where I'm from, but also... Unless this has to do with some Polynesian connection, if you don't consider to be part of Asia then... by the same token, both Taiwanese and Japanese people should be « Pacific Islander » ¯\🤨/¯
@Koko martin one sec- please don’t call my sister stupid 😂 she grew up in the Philippines but we live in the states. But yea, we are Asian and not Pacific Islanders lmao
@@tria3588 What your saying isn't even remotely possible cause if you grow up or even just finished elementary school in the Philippines you wouldn't even question if you're even Asian or not, semply because that's how we were thought in school that we are Asians no doubt.

Side note: Quit assuming Filipinos have to be dark skinned and look a certain way to be classified as Filipino! A lot of us are mestizos! My blood is Filipino! My heart and my heritage is Filipino! End of story.
uhmm mestizos only makes up maybe about 2% of the entire filipino population. we are more chinito than mestizo, many filipinos have Chinese ancestry. but the rest are pure filipino of malay origin. filipinos are in the same group as malaysians, indonesians, thailand : malay blood. the culture is hispanic but not our blood. the reason for the spanish last names is because we are forced to add it not because we are mixed. please stop spreading misinformation
People keep forgetting that there are only tendencies for a certain group of people (under a nationality) to identify as anything else but their Nationality, especially Filipinos! Us Filipinos tend to share the term "Filipino" because We are just that, Filipino. It doesn't depend at all on your ethnicity or ethnic group because the Filipino identity is quite versatile, going from Southern Chinese traders assimilating in, to Spanish people marrying the locals, to Americans marrying with the locals, etc... All that matters is they assimilate and will identify as Filipino, and that's how We are now. We are very much a mix of people from different ethnic groups, to many foreigners it may seem that We are mostly of malayo-polynesian stock or even Austronesian most of the time (Austronesian does not immediately mean coming from Australia or being an Australian Aborigine, which many people mistake it for.). Meaning, darker-skinned, shorter stature, etc... But then again, that's just one portion of the current ethnic groups that lie in The Philippines, sure you could observe that they (The Austronesians and Malayo-Polynesians or Melanesians) were the first to land, but they can't dismiss the fact that many other ethnicities assimilate very well into Filipino culture, specifically East Asians(Mostly-Chinese) ethnic groups are notable. We can't be labeled as "Hispanic" or even "Western" or "Pacific Islander.", The nation is situated in Southeast Asia, and arguably We are a weak example of a "Pacific Islander" nation, We are not in Oceania, We are in southeast asia, exactly. End of story indeed.
@Arroz Solo Many "Filipinos" can classify with any ethnicity, but! If they for example, born in The Philippines, born to Filipino parents who are most-likely not recent immigrants from europe, etc.. Just because they feel white doesn't mean they're white, yeah those people are quite delusional. Some Filipinos who are literally "White" (referring to the ethnic background) in blood can be white, but those who aren't that, would be delusional to try and call themselves white, just because the Philippines was heavily colonized by Spain or something, which isn't a valid argument to call yourself "White" just by that alone. I'd rather just leave that person alone and wait for them to get some sense. It's a stronger argument for that Filipino person to call themselves East Asian or even from Oceania in direct ethnic background rather than straight-up claiming they're White just because of a long history that doesn't directly correlate with that person being "White" or "Spanish".
I'm malay.. but I've worked with many filipinos, so yeah i can tell by their looks.. they do look hispanic, sometimes look like native asian, some look like chinese.. but whatever it is, my hearts and love for all filipinos out there we're one asian family after all.. and we do have similarities too between tagalog language and malay language.. love you all my fellow asians ♥️

I've met some Filipinos who look like white Spaniards, some who look like latinos, and some who look straight up Chinese.

Filipinos in the Philippines always classify themselves as Asian, more specifically, Southeast Asian.
I grew up with Filipinos and they all classify themselves as Asian.
@Rock Roll technically Asian sila. The same way Indians and Pakistanis are
@Rock Roll Middle Eastern countries like Saudi or UAE are West Asian countries.

We came from the same race; the "Austronesian"
In our history class, we were taught that the Spanish colonizers would burn any relics they encountered, possibly to influence our ancestors to convert to Christianity and erase traces of their original way of life. Despite our desire to preserve our culture like our neighbors did, much of it has already been lost. The Spaniards even derogatorily referred to our ancestors as "mang-mang," which isn't true at all given the intricate designs of many artifacts recovered in far flung areas. Heck a writing system was even discovered, but it was already too late since most Filipinos got used to the foreign alphabets.

We have nearly nothing in common with Polynesians which is what the term Pacific Islander seem to be referring to.
tru everything becomes trickier
King Jay it's not that hard really, just look in a mirror and you can tell what race you are. Majority of filipinos look like a mix of chinese, japanese and southeast asian countries. I'll give you 1m pesos if you can find someone looking like a Spanish and Hawaiian in metro manila.

@@___Anakin.Skywalker lol colonial mentality did you learn Philippines history? or inshort your racist
Calling Filipinos as Pacific islanders it's means you have colonial mentality.
Filipino are ASIANS. southeast asians. Why is this even a question?

The Asian Theory, Spain indeed occupied the Philippines for 300 years but the identity of the Philippines and the Filipinos never changed. The Indians didn't have identity crisis just because the Brits occupied their country. So is Indonesia which was occupied by the Dutch.

The exotic beauty of the Philippines 🇵🇭 is the main reason why so many different people around the world being attracted causing the destruction of her true identity, culture and heritage as well!!
Same happens to Mexican Americans and Mexico is next door
In the US race MATTERS A LOT
More than anywhere else in the world, so they try to profile everything based on “race
American system love to classify things

As a filipino born and raised in the US I still consider myself an asian. Why cant people these days embrace their culture or race? Im proud of being a filipino and will always will ❤️
You are asian but not native Filipino I may say, same as American but not native American you know what I mean? Because of all the mixed.
"why cant people these days embrace their culture or race?" are you kidding? That is all people do these days is try to find ways to label themselves.
Panic!500 as a born Costa Rican who was raised in the US since age 4 I consider myself an American, my life, wife, children are from here and I am also a US Marine, can’t get more American than that !!!!
Filipino isn’t actually a ethnicity, Philippines is pretty diverse too many mix raced. Our culture is like mix too (asian, hispanic, pacific islander, etc) and I think that is very filipino or at least what makes us filipino. I myself is born in the Philippines but, my dads family side looks very asian because of the eyes and they also look Polynesian at the same because of their nose and my mum has Spanish blood, she looks nothing like filipino in her teens. I love being Filipino!
Asian isn't a race.

You have a point.

Japan is, indeed, a "Pacific Island," as are those others.
Didn't know people would fight over this comment.

Filipinos are culturally Hispanic, Physically Pacific islander, Geographically Asian.
Good Answer ✔
Pacific islanders are known for being big.

Many people think that systematic racism only existed up until the emancipation proclamation. the reason for the spanish last names is because we are forced to add it not because we are mixed. please stop spreading misinformation
But then again, that's just one portion of the current ethnic groups that lie in The Philippines,
sure you could observe that they (The Austronesians and Malayo-Polynesians or Melanesians) were the first to land, but they can't dismiss the fact that many other ethnicities assimilate very well into Filipino culture, specifically East Asians(Mostly-Chinese) ethnic groups are notable.
Exactly
I'm malay.. but I've worked with many filipinos, so yeah i can tell by their looks.. they do look hispanic, sometimes look like native asian, some look like chinese.. but whatever it is, my hearts and love for all filipinos out there we're one asian family after all.. and we do have similarities too between tagalog language and malay language.. love you all my fellow asians ♥️
@KOKO Martin yes we're one big asian family
Interesting, Im part filipino and never seen anyone who looks hispanic. Some hispanic people have asian features though.
Malaysian are so kind than your neighbors (you know)!!!
@@treetreetreetreetreetree yeah bcos some have spanish ancestors.. my friend is one of them.. she has spanish ancestors in her family
@@arianne8912 ermmm what do u mean?
Labels are for soup cans. What many of us do know is that Filipinos are the friendliest people on earth. ;)
pierusofpella wtf!
@pierusofpella The terrorist element which exists in pocketed areas of the southern islands does not represent the entire country. If it did, there would be sari sari stores all over the country selling loads to headless travel bloggers from the US.
Don't forget Nepal too. Very friendly like Filipinos.
Salamat Sir
