I'm finally gathering my courage and trying to get better at drawing scrolls for my illustrations and oh my god this made it SO MUCH MORE SIMPLER AND LESS SCARY!! this video is going to my stash of art tutorials! 🖤
I've watched other videos on acanthus scrollwork, but yours is the only one which gave me that "aha, so that's how it's done" moment. Can't wait to start practising!
i didnt know what scrolls were called for weeks and this popped up and YES YES FINALLY. i was self teaching myself how to make them, so i think i already have a strong start ;p
As I only started my journey of drawing scrolls 3 days ago, this is amazing to see how each step adds so much. It's easy to get lost on how we got from plain to Fabolous! I can't wait to watch it several times.
This has been super helpful in gaining an understanding of the sort of rules needed for scroll work! Also, we don’t care about the steadiness of your hands mate. It’s beautiful work
For those looking for more in-depth information on scroll work here are a couple of books I found helpful. Drawing and Understanding Scroll Designs, for Artists Engravers and Collectors by Ron Smith (maybe hard to find), and Advanced Drawing of Scrolls for Engravers, Artists, Designers, Craftsman by Ron Smith, published by Glendo Corporation, Emporia, Kansas , USA
What a wonderful video! I have been woodcarving some scrolls and acanthus, but using patterns. I am going to have to watch this a few more times and then try drawing them myself. Thanks so much!
I keep coming back to trying to learn to draw these and I found your video very interesting. You have a good way of breaking it down to make it easier to understand. I'm going to get out the pencil once again! Subbed 👍
73 years old and hands are a bit shaky. Can’t get smooth curves on paper. If you could please make a video on how to deal with this. Some days are better than others but it can be very frustrating. Your drawing looks great to me. My interest is in leather carving and stamping. Thank you for your help. Larry from Dallas.
Very well done. I have studied and used scroll design work for engraving. Looking forward to the next video and seeing how to integrate this into glass signage. Would you consider setting up a PayPal for donations? I would love to donate but I do not care for subscription models, and UA-cam Super Thanks take a good chunk out for themselves (30%😳) . Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks very much, that's very kind of you! I have a Paypal.me set up. The link is: paypal.me/happygilder?country.x=GB&locale.x=en_GB
What a joke... he doesn’t show drawing it, the process he uses. With a video like this, I can just trace someone’s work, record after talking some ish, stop recording, trace, turn the camera back on... and this guy wants donations?
Thanks for the feedback! Let me know when you release your video on the correct way to draw scrolls and I'll happily promote it on the Facebook group :D

Great video. What pencil do you use. Does it make a difference? Thank you
Thanks! If you want sharp lines then an HB and above is what I'd recommend. B pencils are softer and better for loose sketching and shading
