Gotta Bow down to the Master once again, Making it look so effortless just reinforces in me that if I keep at it it will get easier, like everything else in life. Thanks Sam. Great Video as usual.
You make it look so easy. It's like when I do paintless dent repair and people are like "why so expensive, it looks easy". Ya, because I've been doing it for 10 years and if I miss by half a mm I messed up. Here's you tool, have fun. Sometimes I wanna say "I'll charge you 10 for my labor and 200 to know what to do."
20 degree heel is causing you to have to push harder thus, you have to grip the graver differently and apply more force to make a cut. for push engraving on flat stock all you need is a 7-10 degree lift and you wont need to wrap fingers around the bottom of the graver anymore because it will require less force to cut through the metal.
It's always at 1am that I find these videos and it makes me want to go try making a graver again. Hopefully I will remember in the morning, but if its anything like the last three days I doubt it. But I had no idea that it was possible to push grave with such apparent ease. I really want to experiment with engraving, but the scary price tags on the pneumatic gravers is terrifying. I have a pneumatic engraving tool like for writing your name on something you don't want to lose, but I want something a little more controllable. Before the pandemic I meant to make a bunch of gravers with a blacksmith friend in college, but we never got the chance to get back into the metal lab before I graduated. I think I should be able to make one of these with HSS. If not maybe I can try using 1095 steel like I planned before. Thank you for the knowledge!
good work by pushing hand tool. I am also gold engraver since 1971 in india but with hand tool + small hamer with mirror shing image on ornament not pushig tool.. Thanks for sharing your art.
That was hypnotic to watch! Can you explain a bit about your setup? It looks like a vice on a turntable, but can you explain a bit about how are you hold the tool and turn the work?
You make it look easy, that's the sign of a master! I'm charmed by the beauty of this motif. Is there such a thing as books of motifs for engraving that you can copy or get inspiration from?
The Art of Engraving by James B Meek! A beautiful book covering many things for the beginning engraver including scroll design and elements of making a good design.
I was all messed up until I saw that. I was thinking "How do they get such a deep groove?" (like 1/16"), and realized it was magnified 10 times. Makes me feel a little better.
Sam, where can I go to purchase some of the hand engravers. i have been a fan of the art for some time. I would like to purchase a few tools to practice the trade. i enjoy your work and appreciate your help. thanks.
GRS carries a variety of gravers as well as handles search their site and dont let the high price machines scare you off before you find what you need.
Beautiful engraving,I have tried many artistic crafts gilding / sculpture all sorts I tried some years ago to engrave copper sheet having made some lino prints I designed for book illustrations but cutting metal well just one slip and it good buy Vienna but at the time I had no idea to ,use a spinning table thing but still very very skilled I have all ways admired engraved steel, may try something one day?
also a push engraver cuts 99 percent of cuts in a counter clockwise fashion, and you need to spin the ball when you exit , the points on those scrolls will look much better.
Same, How many grams or ounces of downward and forward pressures are needed with your hand? I have basal arthritis, and want to delay surgery on my dominate hand (left). How much does a power graver help with the needed pressures? Thanks tons, Cady
Hello. Could you please tell me what you use to blacken your engravings? Does it last for a long time? I would need a paint/resin/other media to blacken the engravings on a wedding band, so I need something that lasts for quite a while
I use black rustolium or krylon spray paints. I spray the paint into the cap and the apply with a small brush and the wipe the surface free of paint with paper towels or an old rag that has a clean surface.
we used to draw and engrave a six inch cuff bracelet in under an hour usually. i don't think you guys are making your gravers sharp enough, or else you are just afraid to spin the block. either way, it is actually easier to get a smooth curve when you actually spin the ball at a faster pace!
Glen Clark: How about making a video showing your high speed, hand push engraving. And while you are at it, how about showing us how to sharpen a push graver like you do.
Did you pay $382 dollars for that GRS sharpening tool???? I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you. No really, it's nice, but I could never buy one. My husband would have a heart attack? And, I love him.
This guys skill, instructional talent and voice makes him the best teacher I have ever come across
It looks beautiful Sam .Sign of a true master , you make it look so effortless. Thank you for sharing this with us
After some time, I can now see it, I couldn't before.
This is the lesson on which it clicked.
Thank you

How beautiful! Do you roll out ink and print with this plate?

I doubt I could afford it, but do you have a website I can check out? I've got a titanium handled knife I'm hoping to have done with scroll work
Beautiful
Push graver for a beginner or skip it and straight to pneumatic?
IIf you can afford it get a pnumatic but in the interim go with a hammer & graver then push engraving in soft metals.
Hi Sam. Thank You for sharing. May I ask what you use to hold and freely move the vice while engraving?
A ball vise.
Sam, where to get this tools?
Can you tell me what kind of steel is often used to make an engraver? Also what Rockwell are the treated too? Thanks
Hi sam .
Verry nice
try 45 degree face and about 8 degrees of lift to start. and give it a little time to get accustomed to the lower angle.
What machine you are using also Do you use the Air pressure?
Was shading done with same graver as backbone lines?
after using your buzz tools for so long it may take a while to get control of it with the low lift angle.
soooooo good for my OCD....

it is like you guys are engraving in slow motion. years ago i could have engraved that in ten seconds.
Glenn Clark lol your full of it
well maybe not ten seconds , but we used to spinn the ball a lot faster back in those days , wouldn't have taken long
Glenn Clark are you really slating a master engraver?
Glenn Clark you also were not making instructional videos for youtube.
Glenn Clark I think that this is a clip to show those who can't engrave this in "ten seconds" as opposed to the experts out there that can.....
