When I was in school, I didn't like history classes much. Not that I didn't like history itself, because I loved documentaries and other media based on history. I figured out the way I was taught was not usually engaging enough or there were simply too many people being talked about and I had no visual representation of them. I discovered these Extra History videos a few days ago from the Genghis Khan series, and it was the first time I had ever learned about him! To go from knowing "Genghis Khan was this historic guy from Mongolia or whatever" to being able to comprehend his entire life's story in about an hour was great! Thank you so much for these videos! They make me want to seek out more interesting ways to self-study history lessons I missed when I was younger.
Sounds like a terrible parenting, even for the time. But from that troubled childhood came Woman who made Russia Great once more. The Woman of great character and brilliant mind. As Pole, I can't say I like her role in history- If not for Her and Frideric the Great, Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth could have possibly reformed and become the Europes Superpower once more- But I respect her and her great talents. You simply can't deny her role in the history of Russia and thus, the history of the World.

I’m kind of surprised at how much I like Freddy, even though I know very little about him. But considering that many nobles from what would become Germany had done their absolute best to be the stereotype of “nobility purely of the flesh, with none of the spirit” just a century before (Dat 30 Years War, tho. Feels bad, man.), it’s kind of remarkable that someone as well-liked and respected as Frederick managed to emerge from the same lineage. Srsly tho, I need to learn more about him so I can justify having him share “favorite king” status with Gustav Adolf II of Sweden.
its insane how after 7 years this is still the most popular person to get a video on extra history, not Genghis Kahn or Bismarck but Catherine the Great
I just wanted you guys to know that this is my favorite content in the world. not just on the medium of youtube, but in general. from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making these. I plan on supporting the channel when I get my tax refund!
I'm pretty sure that during that time, while Saint Petersburg was considered the "official" capital, it still wasn't a favorite among the noble elite. The ruling classes preferred Moscow as the cultural and religious center of Russia. (I read this in Massey's biography of Catherine the Great.)

haha, she had also get animal husbandry first in the world
Nicholas Cooper *Russia has denounced you* Oh come in, I just punished warmongering Caesar and gave you back two of your cities! That's it. Fuck Cultural victory, Total War it is.
Jaiden Cross I will send you there
Workers CCCP no I only go there if Stalin sends me there!
Words can't begin to describe how good this video was. Both the animation and narration where on point, I myself was very interested in the history of Catherine the Great. This is a very effective way of teaching history to people who actually want to learn it.
quickly rewatching this series before "the great" comes out on hulu lol
... The Disney show..
SOFIA THE FIRST "I'm finding out what being royal is all about".. Wow
@Olivia SUN and then regret it
*clears throat*
SOFIA THE FIRST, MAKING MY WAY IT'S AN ADVENTURE EVERYDAY
IT'S GONNA BE MY TIME TO SHOW THEM ALL THAT I'M SOFIA THE FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRST
(i used to watch that show when i was younger.. but i'm already pretty young, so)
Sophia's mother makes me sick to think of her, but your narration and art are as amazing as ever, EC/ EH team!
What a beautiful story! It's like a fairytale.
Royal Drama sounds like a bunch of terrible people doing terrible things to each other. o0 So weird.
Because the nice ones either get killed off or swept to the side
Most of the time that is not always though Catherine is a good example
@@SA2004YG Royal courts were some of the most Darwinian state institutions in history where in many cases losing favor meant death.
its so weird that Fredrick whom interacted with Catherine and will be an important ally in the future, would not be talked about in extra history for another 6 years.
0:08 Best intro ever. if you disagree then you’re wrong
Can I just say that you have had a perfect track record for answering every question I have ever thought of? I legitimately enjoy all of your videos.
We try our best to have a suspiciously perfect track record with you.... er, it's not suspicious at all!
Seriously though, thanks for the love!
No but seriously. Fredrick the Great series when?
And as long as we're on the subject of monarchs nicknamed, "The Great," a series on Alfred the Great would also be awesome.
Have you tried Kings and Generals? They just started a series for Frederick the Great.
WE NEED MORE THE GREAT VIDEOS GODDAMMIT
Can't wait to see EH's take on von Katte!
Hamilton? Is that you?
Make Russia GreatAgain
parenting was horrible throughout our living
Sorry about the partitions.
Catherine had a terrible mother, and became a terrible mother.
I or l which one is which (I or L and if you guess you get money and food) 🍚🍩🍩🌶🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨
Damn, her mom was such a spoiled brat. But even poor beginnings can leave a lasting legacy, looking forward to more!
This is my favorite Extra History series!
Is it just me or does anyone else come back like every year to binge watch the series?
Sophia's mother sounds like every step-mother Disney villain
It’s honestly pretty cool to see you reminding people of older series through Shorts. It also shows that EH videos are pretty timeless, still being just as good as ones years more recent.
Nobody:
Not a single soul:
Fredrick: WHERE THE CHILD
Psst, guys...the video is amazing, but...double check the description before tomorrow. ;)
Looks like another great series! :D
No worries, just a placeholder! I don't always update the full video for early access. Thanks for looking out for us, though.
Shh. Pretend it's someting good...
scyx what? sorry, maybe they already made a correction, or maybe i just don't see what's wrong. could you pls tell me?
What was it?
this was just randomly in my recommended, and i am SO EMOTIONALLY INVESTED
This looks like it's gonna be an interesting one. I love historical court intrigue.
Too think that the two greatest monarchs of the late 18th century only met once, and when Cathrine was a child no less, is shocking to me.
Whenever I get overwhelmed with life, this channel has been my go-to channel to calm my nerves a bit. And this video has been by far my favorite. Thank you, EC 🥰
My gosh, it's been 4 years already. I don't remember how much I miss this until the algorithm gods sent this video back in my playlist
Why when looking at history are there so many sickly heirs? Was it all that keeping the blood "pure"?
Sam Leheny yup they liked keeping it in the family
Inbreeding yes, but also just bad medical knowledge. Many people died in childhood back then.
I don't think the main purpose of the "inbreeding" was to keep the blood pure, but to ensure profitable marriages and connections to other monarchs. In essence, for them a child was an asset, and you don't want to throw away an asset.
And since the royals always had access to the "latest advances in medicine"...
This is a typical human population before the 19th century:
Fertility rate: 6-7 children per women
Population growth rate: close to zero
Whenever I come to this channel this series about Cathrine the Great is something I always watch. I love listening to how you explain the history of many people.
Omg I totally want to hug Sophia!!!!
? I don't see what's so cringy. ur just being dumb lol
So? let them. It's not hurting anyone, if they're young (which they probably are), let them have fun instead of laughing at them. Hell, if they ARE young, then you're making fun of a CHILD. do you realize how pathetic that is?
Oh wow no way, cool seeing a familiar face lol
Woo! Fritz, my man! I hope we get to see more of him! Don't get me wrong, I'm also excited about Catherine but I just love Frederick so much.
This series nicely links with Fredrick the Great’s series end!
Who else just finished watching "The Great" on Hulu?
ItsChiChi wth is that
@@kanapotetakerngkeat3506 it's a tv series abt Catherine the Great. Its rly funny.
Kanapote Takerngkeat It’s a show that’s very inaccurate but still good
Hi There oh ok? Just asking though but it’s kinda like a Mel Gibson type?
@@kanapotetakerngkeat3506 it's comedic completely barely and seriousness
I’ve seen this about 6 times and I love it
I don't know why but I love this art style so much
I Can imagine Fredrick the great yelling where the heck is Sofia and then her mom says she has nothing to wear then Fredrick calms down is like my dear sister can u please lend Sofia a dress he just go 0 -100 real quick mad and then just calms down
I'm just picturing Fredrick letting out a massive exasperated sigh and then turning to his sister like:
"Wilhelmina?"
"I'm on it."
Why is this my favorite series?
The only person that can get me to enjoy learning about 17th century aristocracy
History is a million times more entertaining than fiction.
Isn't history fiction?
You should have called it "Catherine the ok" for this video, "the alright", then the great for the next one
What do you think this is? Overlysarcastic productions?
"Some of us are trying to nail Catharine the Great.... Or should I say Catharine the So-so." --JKF

Roughly 5 years of watching this channel. The start of a wonderful journey of discovery and knowledge.
Thank you, Extra History.
This was so good I watch all of them I forgot I was even learning about history, I mean that in a good way. This was so informative and yet so fun to watch, I loved this, keep doing what you're doing and enjoy the process! Love you're vids!
6:53 When you are so desperate in finding wife, that you tell her the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise...
it's not a story your mother would tell you
😆
These are my favorite vids, this series helps me exist!!!!! This channel is the greatest in my opinion especially it’s true history you don’t find in history books!!!
Hmm, the ill treatment from her mother explains A LOT of Catherine's future relationship with her own offspring...
AndyG94 uh we call them children
"Mutated Cumspawns" OMG LOL , you sir won the universe.
I prefer the term "mistakes" or "regrets"... "disappoints" also works.
Unhacker, The Laziest Bastard on the Internet lol
We call them brood or food.
Frederick the Great needs a full series. He is bae.
fantastically told. if only all history was told like this
They went to Petersburg not Moscow...
Yes. In 1721, Emperor Peter I of the Russian Empire founded St. Petersburg as the capital of the Empire.
Well, but the capital of Russia was Saint-Petersburg, not Moscow
I'm pretty sure that during that time, while Saint Petersburg was considered the "official" capital, it still wasn't a favorite among the noble elite. The ruling classes preferred Moscow as the cultural and religious center of Russia. (I read this in Massey's biography of Catherine the Great.)
I love how these characters are drawn and I just love how everything explained
As someone who knows nothing about pre-Soviet Russian history, "Count Bestushev" is a fantastic villain name.
