  • In this video, Greg gets back on the sawmill... it's been about two months since the last time he milled a huge timber. Feels good to be back on and so thankful for this sawmill cover because it rained ALL day and Greg was undercover!
    Greg grabs a doug fir log and mills up a 6x10x22 timber (the 4th post out of 14 needed posts for the barn). He is also able to get two 2x6x22s and two 1x6x22s. Slowly, but surely getting back to it! It's going to be the winter of the sawmill!
    Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
    Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ and we are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
    ***We are so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
    Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
    Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
    Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
    We have shared the entire build!

    Excellent professional work there. Nice to see you reason every cut and get it right. That beam is gorgeous.

      Thank you so much, Rick! Yeah, I definitely love the mathematics of milling. It’s fun to look at a log and determine what cuts I can make out of it, using as much of the log as I can. Thanks for watching! 😊

      Thank you so much, Stephen! That’s such a nice compliment. I still feel like I’m new at it, too. But, with every log I learn more and more. If you ever have any questions, let me know and I’ll do my best to help! Thanks for watching! 😄

    All the monkeying around with getting that log perfectly 90 degrees on a horizontal bandsaw mill is the exact reason I would purchase a vertical bandsaw mill so the blade is automatically 90 deg to the head blocks. After the log is opened that side goes down on the head blocks and sits flat every time. Nice that you have Doug Fir on your property.

    Howdy y’all- those big beams take a while but so rewarding to look at when you get them finished. I made my slice of homemade pumpkin roll last the whole video. Great video. Take care and God’s blessings to you

    Greg, your smiles say it all. You must be very happy to have the sawmill cover nearly completed so you stay dry as you make lumber. The post and boards look great and will be a good start on your cut list. Coniniued blessings to you.

      Thank you so much, Bill! Yeah, I’m very happy it’s almost complete. I’m also really happy that soon there will be lights and power and I can mill into the dark! It gets dark so early here. Thanks for watching, Bill! 😊

    Looking good. Adding the lights to extend your work day will be a big help. If you had the pith centered better, would that have shortened the 1 x 6 and 2 x 6 that you were able to cut?
    I sure wish that we had daylight savings time year around. The extra hour of sunlight in the evening is surely nice.
    Thanks for bringing us along

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  7 місяців тому +2

      Thanks, Mike! Yeah, I think that if I would have centered the pith, I wouldn’t have gotten as many smaller boards. I think it’s important to pay closer attention to centering the pith, even if it sacrifices some board footage.
      I agree it sure would be nice to have that extra hour of daylight. The older I get, the more I complain about it. 😁

    one thing I can say is back in my day we tried not to buy big thick beams if we needed a 6 by 10 we would laminated beams are selves we would take 2x6 or 2x10 and make a beam by gluing and running screws into them and it makes it stronger as a bean and much easier to deal with so it is just a thought I want to give instead try to get these big beams out one long maybe cut a bunch 2x6 how ever long glue screw them together to make the one big beam

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  7 місяців тому +3

      That definitely makes sense for beams. This is a post (I know I accidentally called it a beam a couple of times)…sorry! Thanks for watching, Wade! 😁

    Greg, is it just water that you drip on the blade, or are you using something that will breakdown the pitch? Sawmill looks like it is cutting good.
