    Trinity went to Sam's Club and bought some Sweet Potatoes. After chopping them up, she roasted them and put them in the Freeze Dryer. Along with two trays of Jalepenos and some bananas.

    The cost of a freeze dryer is outrageous!

  • @alinamichalski-tomkenroadm2157

    It would be very helpful if you told us how many pounds you use for your (medium or large dryer). For me planing it first time, I have no idea how much to prepare.

    Did you make your own jar vacuum sealer? That looks interesting, can you share how it’s made?

    Does that model not have the insulation disc in the front? I saw the stivers didn't have one in theirs either, never saw one that hadn't had that. Really wish we could get one, one day 😁 thanks for sharing!

      No it doesn't need one. The newer models doesn't have the insulation disc.

    Using the oil was a very bad idea for the freeze dryer. But putting things in a plastic bag was very short term anyway. You are nor fully drying your bananas if they are soft or tacky. You needed to add more time to anything that feels tacky when you check them. Also when checking if anything feels a little cold you know it needs more time.

    Have you noticed if the bananas take on the smell/flavor of the jalapeños?

    That is one thing we have got to invest in in the very near future. So many great things you can freeze dry. We planted 4 Jalapeno from seeds and have grown more than we could use this year. Thanks for sharing.

    Since you poured oil over the sweet potatoes have you noticed any of them going rancid? I know oil is the enemy of freeze drying.

    Did you happen to check those bananas with a moister meter? If they are gumming they probably still have some moister in them.

    I puréed my bananas, poured them on my pans, froze them, freeze dried them and then powdered them in my blender. We LOVE banana shakes! Turned out perfect. I’m trying the sweet potatoes tomorrow and thinking about using my salad shooter to get even slices. You’re right in that we aren’t getting any younger! Did you blanche your jalapeños or just slice and freeze?

    Trinity thanks! Question: I see you using your food saver for storage. What is the benefit over Mylar bags?

    • @BlueCollarHomestead
      @BlueCollarHomestead  2 роки тому

      Hi Jill! Thanks for watching and your question.
      Since this video the food saver bags didn't hold up in preserving the food as we thought it would. We found that the plastic is breathable whereas the mylar bags aren't so much. We have also found sealed jars with the oxygen absorbers work well also.
