you’re alright Jim 😊 - your smile when something musical _tickles_ you is, I dare say, genuine, deep rooted, and infectious… betrays a soul-level love for music. glad you’ve found your personal place with some of Frank’s music - cool. I’ll be watching the channel for your reactions on other artists / bands. thx Jim. seanM
TROUBLE WAS WRITTEN IN 1966, INFLUENCED BY THE WATTS RACE RIOTS IN CALIFORNIA. THE ONE LINE OMITTED FROM THIS LIVE VERSION THAT AT THE AGE OF 12 GAVE ME CHILLS, “I’m Not Black, but a Bunch of Times I Wish I could say, I’m Not White” !!!! WOW !!!! Excuse me if I didn’t get the line just right without playing FO for reference. I’m 69 going on 70 AND I OWN 98-99% OF THE 127 OFFICIAL RELEASES FRANK WAS THE ABSOLUTE MASTER OF GUITAR FEEDBACK LIVE TO CREATE A MOOD OR AN AIR SCULPTURE !!!
That double drum break from Ralph Humphreys and Chester Thompson impressed Phil Collins and was one of the factors that led to Chester joining Genesis.
There is a DVD from these shows, called “Roxy, The Movie”, you can see all this music and more. At the time, they were unable to successfully link the audio with the video, but modern digital tech has achieved that. It’s brilliant to see, and answers a question you asked on the Side 2 video…no music stands onstage. Not only was all this music memorized, but Zappa also “conducted” with a series of hand signals that could send the whole band down a musical rabbit hole in a gesture! Add the “dance contest” and a few famous groupies…very entertaining! 😁
I grew up listening to Frank and have seen him about a dozen or so times... It's so great watching others experience Frank for the first time Great job!! Frank as I've been saying for a while, is one of the greatest American composers of our time.. And I believe we'll go down as such.. Keep on rockin'!!
The video recording done at the time was notoriously bad though and did not synch up with he audio. Frank wanted to release a concert movie but could not because of these problems. It took a few decades for technology to catch up so it could be painstakingly fixed. It is now available on video.
Happy birthday. I have many favourite Zappa albums, and this is one of them. I have played the whole thing hundreds of times, and it is always brilliant.
Chester Thompson's drum fill on TROUBLE EVERY DAY caused Phil Collins to hire him & use that sound on several of his own hit records in the late 70s & early 80s
Happy Birthday Jim! Great album, just love Zappa. You must listen to his 1974 album 'Apostrophe'...a masterclass of tight musicianship. 'Don't Eat the Yellow Snow'...a hilarious suite.
I just stumbled on your review of Roxy. Just want to let you know that you can actually see that show as it happened. The entire show was filmed and was released by the Zappa family in 2015. Easily available too. Some of it might even be available right here on UA-cam, I didn't check, but worth taking a look. I don't do internet very frequently, but when I do, sometimes I fall on little snippets of interesting stuff. This was one of those moments. Oh, a little late but, happy birthday and new year.
This album is one of my Desert Island Discs. I did get to see Dweezil and his band play it note for note for it's 40th anniversary. They did it justice.
Note by note? Sounds kinda boring, considering solo improvisations and the development of tracks over time is what gives excitement to live performances of Frank's songs imo.
@@Ninang363 Well, from what I've listened to (so far only video recordings), ZpZ do some variations sometimes. Guess we're just divided as to what kind of show we prefer. (I'm kinda a jazz appreciating guy besides prog, so it makes sense that I seek variation from performance to performance 🙂)
Best guitar performance I've ever experienced was Frank Zappa, Halloween, sometime in the early 70s, in NYC. It was in the Felt Forum, the venue below Madison Square Garden. I've seen all the great guitarists in rock and many in jazz. Frank's playing was magical, almost otherworldly. He wasn't just riffing, he was composing as he soloed. The audience was entranced.
To think that all of this fantastic music came from one man's mind is incredible. Then add Frank's guitar playing and conducting and I think you have the greatest musician of the time. I also personally think he's the best guitar player but that's just my opinion. Anyway, I really enjoyed these Roxy reactions - thank you very much and happy belated birthday Jim!
I like your sentiment about ppl not not knowing his music. I beleive over time it will be regognized, and I am heartened to see you and others getting into his music more and more.
Wish you a sweet Birthday, like the chokolate you just had, and very exiting, like the music you just heard! Thanks! Everithing you do here is respectable!
Thanks, Jim, that was brilliant. My copy of this album might be a genuine collector's item. The inner panels of the sleeve have been glued in upside-down. Anyone else? Anyhow, I am chuffed to bits that you liked it so much, so Happy Birthday! (I knew you would ...)
Happy Birthday Jim. Listening to these two album sides yesterday and today was time well spent. I enjoyed it immensely. This was a great request and your comments were excellent. Until the pandemic, I could only name one song, now I know many. 😊
Happy birthday!!! Now down to business, there's a live video version of Cheepnis only on the Chalk Pie video release, with Chester, Ralph, Ruth and Frank ONLY, just drums and percussion. It's insane... The complexity of this music and the unbelievable level of execution.

can't comment without saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY .... again 😄😉 listening to this great live recording you brought up the question, how many people could name a song of Frank Zappa. I can tell you that many people in Germany know Bobby Brown...and from what I can tell it's more women than man and the funny part is, that many of them think it's a love song, because they don't listen to or even more of them don't understand the lyrics. So whenever I heard this song in public and saw people sing along I had to laugh so hard ... on the inside .. 🤣🤣🤣🤘
@@JimNewstead so you don't know this Bobby Brown song ? It was so successful here .. and it's still so funny, seeing girls singing along the first line without knowing what the song is about 🤣🤣🤣
